It's with an indescribable amount of joy that I'm happy to announce that the first demo for Carpathian Skies is now out on itch.io for Windows Mac and Linux here!

The demo is relatively short, about the first 15 minutes of gameplay, but I really hope you enjoy it as much as I've had making it. Thanks so much for all the love and support for my little side project!

It's not easy coming into the world as an amalgamation of hundreds of people stitched together, but at least the crew of The Carpathia will be by your side while you learn what it means to be alive

Explanation: A natural border between Slovakia and Poland is the Tatra Mountains. A prominent destination for astrophotographers, the Tatras are the highest mountain range in the Carpathians. In the featured image taken in May, one can see the center of our Milky Way galaxy with two of its famous stellar nurseries, the Lagoon and Omega Nebula, just over the top of the Tatras. Stellar nurseries are full of ionized hydrogen, a fundamental component for the formation of Earth-abundant water. As a fundamental ingredient in all known forms of life, water is a crucial element in the Universe. Such water can be seen in the foreground in the form of the Bialka River.

I'm trying to learn English by writing short texts on various topics. I'm writing them about Ghost, Soap and other COD characters. So, here is text about travel and rest (613 words).

“Hey, Captain, did you miss us?” Soap asked cheerfully, looking at Price.

“Honestly he didn’t.” Gaz answered and smirked snidely. “He said how quiet and calm it was without you two this whole week.”

“You’re a jerk!” Soap pouted. “It can’t be true!”

Captain Price sighed heavily and turned the page of the newspaper he was reading.

Ghost carried their backpacks to their rooms and came back to the dayroom. He started making tea for himself, Price and Garrick. Johnny didn’t like tea, so he made coffee for himself and grumbled something about fucking Brits.

“So where have you been?” The Captain asked, lighting his cigar.

“We traveled through the Carpathian Mountains by quad bikes.” Ghost said and sat opposite Price. “We stopped for the night and slept in a tent.”

“Wow, sex in nature is cool.” Garrick interrupted. “Hope you stocked up on wet wipes.”

“No need to be jealous, mate.” Soap sat next to Ghost and rested his head on his shoulder.

“Were you hunting?” Price asked because he was tired of hearing stupid jokes about personal life of his subordinates.

“Hell yeah!” Soap nodded and smiled. “And fishing! I caught a huge trout! And Simon cooked a gorgeous soup with mushrooms and grilled fish steaks.”

Johnny told how Simon and he were picking mushrooms and all his prey was poisonous. It was the first and the only time Ghost allowed Soap to pick mushrooms. Kyle was laughing a lot and Johnny kicked him once or twice.

“Where your route had started?” Price asked when the Sergeants calmed down.

“We flew to Slovakia by plane,” Ghost answered, drank his tea. “Then we rented quad bikes and went through it, Poland, Ukraine and Romania.”

“And Transylvania!” Soap interrupted.

“Did you see vampires?” Garrick smirked.

“No, but Johnny was attacked by a bat,” Ghost raised his balaclava and lit a cigarette. “It was at night when he left the tent. I was already asleep, but his screams and shots woke me up”.

“Soap, did you really shoot a bat?” Gaz stared at Johnny.

“Oh, fuck you, guys!” Soap got angry and pouted. “It was a bloody big bat! And very aggressive!”

“So did you kill it, son?” The Captain looked at Johnny with interest.

“Maybe,” he answered. “It was fucking dark there!”

Soap started showing photos and videos. There were a lot of beautiful pictures of nature; their camp with a comfortable tent, camp table and two fishing chairs; their food cooked by Ghost. Soap was in many photos and videos too. Price and Garrick saw how he was riding a quad bike, fishing, trying to help with cooking, jumping from the waterfall naked, even sleeping in the tent. Simon has much less photos and he was in his balaclava there.

“We have brought gifts for you!” Johnny smiled and ran to his room.

He came back very soon, carrying several packages. Price and Garrick received postcards from Slovakia, magnets from Poland, handmade leather wallets from Ukraine and vampire clay mugs from Transylvania.

“Now it’s your turn to go to leave,” Soap said to the Captain and Gaz. “Where will you go?”

“On the seaside,” Price answered. “I want just to lie in the sun, to swim in warm sea and to drink cocktails all week”.

“And I’ll go water skiing and spearfishing,” Kyle said.

“So you will go together too?” Simon asked, bowed his head.

“No, just at the same place,” Gaz answered quickly, and Soap smirked.

“Well, I’m going to sleep,” Ghost said and got up.

“Me too,” Soap smiled. “Good night!” They left together and Kyle got up to make another cup of tea for him and for the Captain.

Name Meaning: Long-legged Bird Thief

Time: 30 to 31 million years ago (Rupelian stage of the Oligocene epoch, Paleogene period) 

Location: Jamna Dolna, Menilite Beds, Carpathian Flysch Zone, southeast Poland 

Birds of prey are fascinating - there are many different kinds, doing many different things, and their radiation is poorly understood. Aviraptor helps put together some pieces of the puzzle by being the first raptor known adapted for eating birds as prey - essentially, capturing (larger) flying animals in the air, a not-easy feat. It was very similar to modern diurnal raptors, with a short beak, large laws, and long slender legs. That said, with those proportions it was very small - similar in size to living sparrowhawks and tiny hawks. It didn’t have a particularly hooked beak, but a straighter one similar to the harrier-hawks. It was similar, overall, to living birds that hunt early birds - and as such, it is the earliest known bird we know of to hunt other birds (oh bird on bird crime). Living alongside a variety of other birds, including passerines and hummingbirds, it probably fed on smaller avifauna in its area - and Aviraptor itself may have evolved in response to the radiation of many small birds in the early Oligocene. In addition to early modern-hummingbirds and crown passerines, Aviraptor lived alongside hoopoe-hornbill relatives, chickens, fish, and turtles.

Name Meaning: Powerful Hidden Vulture 

Time: 770,000 to 55,000 years ago (Chibanian to Tarantian stage of the Pleistocene epoch, Quaternary period) 

Location: Throughout Australia, including Kalamurina, the Wellington Caves, and the Nullarbor Plain 

Today, there are no vultures in Australia. In fact, until recently, it seemed fairly clear that no vultures had lived in Australia - but now, we know they did! Originally thought to be an eagle, Cryptogyps was on the small size for a vulture, only bigger than the living Hooded Vulture - though it was about the size of the wedge-tailed eagle. However, it was proportioned similarly to other vultures, and between that and its great range across the entirety of Australia, it is logical to conclude that it lived similarly to other vultures, feeding primarily on carrion and going great distances to find it. It did not have the right musculature to be an active hunter like eagles and hawks. As such, Cryptogyps was a vital part of its environment, reducing the spread of disease and recycling nutrients and energy back into the food web like vultures today. Cryptogyps lived alongside a wide variety of weird megafuana present in Australia during the last ice age, including marsupial lions, giant demon-ducks (mihirungs), giant hippo-sized wombats, sheep-sized and fossorial echidnas, short-faced kangaroos, giant koalas, thylacines, giant maleefowls, huge monitor lizards, large crocodilians, and giant pythons - as well as cassowaries, regular kangaroos, emus, and other large animals that remain today. It was a weird place of which Cryptogyps was a small and important part, and would have been a regular sight in the skies to the first Indigenous Australians to settle on the continent!

The wolves are def into nature! Touring mountains, rock climbing, skiing, anywhere with peaks and open sky and heights is great, and lots of forests please. Very drawn to them and anything that feels "wild".

Now Isaiah can totally appreciate good foods and sightseeing. Seline has to visit museums and aquariums at every new city, lol, but Isaiah also enjoys just getting lost on the streets and seeing where it will take him and he is dragging her into it too.

Matt is not that into cities, but he appreciates good running promenades, be it by the beach or forest or with a nice view of buildings. As long as he can run, he is fine.

Seline loves the sea and going to sea, lakes, rivers, anything water related. The boys have to indulge her, they are not that particular about water sports.

Dylan likes parties and he is one of the few wolves who don't mind crowds. He is too trusting and excited about meeting new people, lmao.

Rip is into parkour, so he actually likes cities with buildings thick together and with different roofs to climb and jump from. And he visited the most cities out of my OCs, usually by jumping on the train and getting out on a whim.

Hector's ideal trip is quiete mountain or forest, okay. Camping in the middle of nowhere with a tent or a log cabin, fishing and long walks.

Arnie would die in such conditions. Didn't grow up like one, but he is a city boy through and through. He would enjoy sightseeing, galleries, museums, architecture; he can even spew random history facts and look up what was built in what style.

As for dream destinations, Seline wants to see Tokyo, Arnie and Hector crave New York, Isaiah wants to visit Africa, Matthew is eyeing Sydney, Los Angels for Dylan and Rip wants to see London.

(If you asked about their current favourite cities, Seline would say Venice, Rip would say Barcelona, Arnie would say Paris, Hector would say Poprad [a Slovakia city with access to highest parts of Carpathian mountain range] Matthew loves the scenic paths in Prague and Isaiah would say Vienna lol.)

Next site will be on a lighter and higher note. We're visiting Drahobrat Ski Resort in Zakarpattia Oblast in the Carpathian Mountains. The resort is located at 1,400 meters (about 4,594 feet) and has 10 km (about 6 miles) of slopes available to ski, located between 1,400 and 1,703 meters. The ski resort is located on Drahobrat Mountain in the Ukrainian Carpathians and is popular for skiing and snowboarding. The mountain is 1,763 meters high (5,784 feet).

This is the long awaited English debut by Romanian crime fiction author Tony Mott. Set in her home city of Brașov is a city in the Transylvania region, ringed by the Carpathian mountains. I believe this may actually be the second book in a series featuring forensic pathologist Gigi Alexis, yet was presumably chosen as her English language debut as it was seen as a good introduction by the publisher, Corylus Books.

Accessible it certainly is. After a heart stopping and short opening sequence, the novel quickly introduces Alexis. Having just returned from holiday it takes no time to begin to discover elements of her personal life, her work environment and her dark sence of humour. Having established the basics, our new protagonist is quickly called to a crime scene where ominously the investigating officer warns Alexis that the murder victim shares a strong resemblance to her. This crime is perplexing as there is no obvious motive and due to the unique placing of the corpse. It isn't long before it becomes clear to the reader that this is a police division under the pressure of a new chief and secondly that the views and opinions of a female civilian are judged secondary to those of male police officers

As further events including subsequent mystifying murders unfold it appears that Brașov could be facing the almost unique predicament of having a serial killer at large where Alexa will require to channel all her wits and experience, as well as her powers of persuasion in order to attempt to make these crimes stop and find the perpetrator.

Readers will find that Deadly Autumn Harvest is an absorbing introduction to Romanian crime fiction, although it also complements well previous novels already available to English language readers from the same publisher. It offers a fascinating insight into murder investigations in the former communist country and also is a very revealing introduction to Brașov and it's surrounding area which will appeal to many existing readers of crime fiction. I strongly recommend it and look forward to reading more novels by Tony Mott in the future.

A series of bizarre murders rocks the beautiful Carpathian town of Braşov. At first there’s nothing obvious that links what look like random killings.

With the police still smarting from the scandal of having failed to act in a previous case of a serial kidnapper and killer, they bring in forensic pathologist Gigi Alexa to figure out if several murderers are at work – or if they have another serial killer on their hands.

Ambitious, tough, and not one to suffer fools gladly, Gigi fights to be taken seriously in a society that maintains old-fashioned attitudes to the roles of women.

She and the police team struggle to establish a pattern, especially when resources are diverted to investigating a possible terrorist plot. With the clock ticking, Gigi stumbles across what looks to be a far-fetched theory – just as she realises that she could be on the murderer’s to-kill list.
