I’ve been taking part in extensive independent research of late, tasting and drinking whiskies of different ages but very similar cask regimes. The first, the two PX Springbanks, were interesting as the one on the left was very much the first iteration of the one on the right. On the palate they were as close as two different drams could be right up until the mid-finish, where the 10yo expressed an orange flower perfume and complexity the 8yo lacked. The two Madeiras were so different. The Ardnamurchan a fun, forward, fleshy joy of a dram, cut from a Malmsey or Boal cloth. Immediately appealing. The Springbank was showing better than when I opened it over two years ago. Dry and spiced nose and a palate so integrated and complex, it changes a bit with every sip. Sercial-y to say the least. The final two showed off their inherent distillery characters far more than the benefits of Marsala ageing. Both delicious, the Port Charlotte was like drinking a toffee-soaked bonfire and demanded a bit of water for balance. The Bunnahabhain is more vinous, high-toned and with a more perfumed peaty-ness. It harkens back to an older style of whisky from them and I love it for that. No real surprises. The young’uns were feisty, fiery and fun. The older bottlings showed a bit more poise. I still think PX is somewhat overrated for whisky finishes in general and Marsala is perhaps underrated. I can't really find much information on this whisky but I seriously doubt it was distilled in Japan. The Yamato Special Edition Cask Strength comes in a nice bottle that will definitely become a decanter when I finish it. It doesn't carry the flavors I'm used to with Japanese Whisky. There are flavors of resin, and maple, mixed with some light cereal notes. Paired it with a Fruit Leather from Privada Cigar Club. .... I can feel fall in the air. I love it. It's my absolute favorite time of year. I start watching more horror movies, reading or listening to ghost stories, enjoying the fire and a smoke more while the temperature drops and the chill air along the California coast gets into your bones (IYKYK). .... 1998 was a great year for the #Glenlivet to barrel some #whisky. This #Natural #caskstrength #singlemalt #Scotch whisky comes in at 107.4 proof. I wish more #Distilleries would bottle with a bit more horsepower. When I see 40% #abv on the label, in my mind all I see is a greedy pig. Quite all the water cut, added color, and #chillfiltration. If your #whiskey sucks, dump it and make something drinkable. Stop putting out 80 proof dumbed down scotch. Let me have all the heat and all the flavor so I can get my money's worth, and I can learn along the way how much water I need to add to get the best out of it. Bravo to @theglenlivet for offering these cask strength bottling. This particular bottle was barreled was back in 1998 and barreled March of #2014. If you seen this style label, absolutely pick it up. The new #Nadurra lost the age statement and is very young. Personally I much prefer Yamazaki & Hibiki, but as Karuizawa stocks are depleting, the last cask is said to be released in 2020, Karuizawa prices will jump to another level. I missed "Wear your Lifejacket to Work Day" and the kickoff of National Safe Boating Week but today is National Maritime Day so I'm hanging with Ducky and Pelorus the Pug to celebrate. (Extra points if you know what pelorus is) I think my little Porg friend needs a better fitting Lifejacket but he's also throwing out some love to Sea Partners, the US Coast Guard, and the Coast Guard Reserve.
