How Do I Disassemble A Spell Jar?
I’ve seen way too many posts about how to make one, but never any about how to take one apart.
If you buried your spell jar (or otherwise placed it somewhere not in your general vicinity), retrieve it first.
There are a few ways to go about disassembling a spell jar.
Throwing Everything Away
Returning It to Nature
Burning It
Putting It Into Another Container for Safekeeping
Retrieving the Reusable Ingredients (crystals, shells, etc.) and Getting Rid of the Rest
Throwing Everything Away
As simple as it sounds. I would recommend breaking the seal (melting it or even just stabbing it) before getting rid of it, to break the spell itself. Keep the jar and wash it or throw it away with the rest of it. Throw the contents into the trash (or a dumpster, if you don’t want it near you).
Returning It to Nature
Also very simple. Can only be used with natural ingredients. Do not dump in rivers. Retrieve any non-organic materials (crystals, shells, poppets, etc.) to either reuse or get rid of separately. Be sure it doesn’t include things that can harm the local wildlife.
Burning It
Empty the contents of the jar into a different, fire-safe bowl or plate. Then, burn it. Simple as that. Lighters or matches, it doesn’t matter. Be sure that you and any pets or family can inhale the fumes from it. This is usually used with spells that have little amounts of ingredients. Be sure to research fire safety and safety when it comes to burning herbs and other ingredients.
Putting It Into Another Container for Safekeeping
Transferring the contents into a different container. Usually done when you want to reuse the jar or size down the original jar. Break the seal, pour it into your other container, seal that, and you’re done. Super easy. Can also be used when putting a spell into a ‘dormant’ state.
Retrieving the Reusable Ingredients and Getting Rid of the Rest
What I see the most in the witch community. Reusable ingredients include crystals, shells, rocks, bones, and anything else that can be used again. Doing this is a bit harder when the jar has liquid. Break the seal and place the contents of the jar into another container. Then, pick out all of the reusable items, the ones that you want to keep. Wash them and dispose of the contents of the jar through one of the methods above.
Notes
When disassembling a spell jar, it’s always good to declare the intentions of the jar done (or dormant). If the spell could have negative consequences on your or someone else’s life, be sure to neutralize the energy you have put into the spell. Cast a counter-spell or just neutralize the spell. Please tell me if I missed anything!

Hi Neil. How much control do you have over casting for parts, whether minor or major characters? If you were to say "I'd like to see X actor as this character" are you more likely to get a "We'll contact their agent to see if they're free to play the part" or is it more 'We'll put their name in the list of actors we'll ask to read for it" or does it depend on the actor and the part?
Thanks!
It depends. I have a lot of input and power, but I'm not the only one watching the auditions or signing off on people, and everyone needs to be convinced.
For example, we auditioned a lot of actors for young Ethel Cripps and couldn't find anyone, so I suggested Niamh Walsh, whom I'd worked with on Good Omens and was certain could deliver. She auditioned and got the part.
We couldn't find a Hal, so I suggested John Cameron Mitchell. We reached out to him and his reps to find out if he was free and able to get to the UK when we needed him, knowing we didn't need to audition him: we knew he could act, we knew he could sing, and we knew he would be a perfect Hal.
The impression people probably have is that Mason Alexander Park reached out to me on Twitter and was cast as Desire, and while both of those things are true, I replied to Mason and told them who our casting director was, Mason's agent reached out to Lucinda Syson, our casting director, Mason auditioned, along with 50 other people, and beat 50 other people to the part. And it wasn't me making it happen -- it was obvious to everyone that Mason was the best.
I've learned the hard way from shows in the past that you never want to simply put someone who is any kind of an unknown quantity into a role without auditioning them, whether they are friends or not. You never want to assume anyone can do an accent of any kind.

Kids shouldn't have to be our heroes. Not in reality, and not on TV.
The recent news of Jennette McCurdy coming out as yet another child star abused by Hollywood made me want to say it outright: I don't want an Animorphs adaptation starring actual kids.
I want an animated series voiced by adults, or by kids who work <10 hours a week. I want a movie where babyfaced adults play pretend. I want a digital deaging of unionized talent who earn a living wage and want to be there. If nothing else, I want a movie made like the Narnia series: filmed on a yearlong string of Saturdays so that the child stars never missed a day of school, letting the voice cracks and zits happen as they would. I want a pretend version of my favorite pretend story to be made by people who have full sets of citizen rights, the skills necessary to negotiate their own contracts, and the ability both to enjoy the work they do and to walk away if necessary.
I just want to say it because in the past I've poked fun at AniTV for having a 27-year-old play a 14-year-old, and because I've loudly advocated for diverse casting that matches actors' identities to characters'. But I'm mocking the unconvincing 14-year-old in the same spirit I'm mocking the unconvincing skunk puppets and tiger stock footage. And I'm advocating for disabled parts to go to disabled actors, who are adults who can self-advocate. I'd rather my 14-year-olds were played by 27-year-olds than have any 14-year-olds ever star in TV shows, with all the scrutiny and body-shaming and missed education and exploitation that comes with doing that kind of job while also not legally allowed to own property or get a different job or renegotiate your own contracts.
Anyway. That's all.
