Château de Rastignac
La Bachellerie, Dordogne, France *
Built between 1789 and 1817. The American Presidential Residence, the White House (southern facade) is kind of modeled after this château.
In 1944, the fleeing Nazi soldiers set it into fire, only the limestone exterior remained. The Bernheim-Jeune Gallery’s collection hidden in the building was also destroyed, including paintings of van Gogh, Cézanne, Manet, Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Matisse, among others. Restored in 1952, but mostly abandoned the second half of the 20th century.
Purchased by a group of Dutch in 2000, renovation works finished in 2003, the estate was divided into 5 residential units (+2 more units in the Orangerie).
