say, any steam recommendations for a very financially stressed college student (i.e., literally free, because I can't put more money in my steam wallet but I would also really like something new to play)? Generally more a fan of puzzlers/stories/simulators(?) than shooters; "One Shot" and "Undertale" are the two main reasons I got into video games and I've been subsisting on Stardew Valley ever since, mainly for the gayness. Thanks a million! No worries if you can't.
I actually did a post on this very topic back in May of this year. Once you’re done checking that one out, have a few more I didn’t touch on there, either because they hadn’t been released yet, or because they just didn’t pop into my head at the time:
Atma - A pixel-art action adventure game that revolves around drawing lines and shapes on the screen to banish enemies and solve puzzles. Definitely on the casual side, but its biggest shortcoming its its length; even a first playthrough likely won’t take more than an hour.
Cat Burglar: A Tail of Purrsuit- An arcade stealth game about a cat burglar who is literally a cat. This one’s donationware for a Utah-based animal welfare organisation; i.e., it doesn’t cost anything to play, but it’ll ask for donations between levels.
Cubico - This student project is an abstract platformer where you roll a ball around in a world made of pastel-coloured abstract shapes. You’ll find it either charming or frustrating, with very little middle ground. Nice soundtrack, though.
Himno - It’s tough to call this procedurally generated endless platformer a puzzler, because there aren’t any real objectives apart from the Steam achievements, but if you’re willing to set your own goals there’s a fair bit of fun to be had of the “how the heck do I get over there?” variety.
Honey Rose: Underdog Fighter Extraordinaire - Strictly speaking, this underground wrestling life sim is pay-what-you-want, not free, so I encourage you to toss in a few bucks if you try it and like what you see. Pretty good combat system for a visual novel.
Lake of Voices - A horror visual novel about crossing a monster-filled lake. It’s fully voice acted, which is kind of amazing for a freeware VN, even if some of the performances are only so-so. Some real-time decisions, so fair warning if you don’t care for twitch gameplay.
missed messages. - A short-form romance VN with light psychological horror elements. Expect each playthrough to take about twenty minutes, with four different endings available. Content warning for discussion of suicide and self-harm.
An Oath to the Stars - An old-school bullet hell shooter, you’re getting exactly what you’d expect: great swarms of slow-moving candy coloured bullets to thread your way through while you hold down the fire button and hope for the best. Includes an easy mode for genre newbies.
Soulscape - This is… you know, I’m not actually sure. You’re a ghost in a wheelchair. At one point to fight a sentient buttock. Basically, if you’re a fan of Yume Nikki or Off, you’re probably going to enjoy this. In theory the first game of a trilogy, though the other two don’t exist yet.
To the Core - A nice looking speedrun-oriented platformer, brought up short of its potential by conspicuously janky controls. Whether you’ll get anything out of it depends on how easily annoyed you are by your character doing almost but not quite what you told them to.
UNDEFEATED - Another student project, this one’s basically about Superman with the serial numbers filed off. You’re 100% invincible, while your city has a life meter; this isn’t the first game to use that gimmick, but it does it well. Mostly a proof of concept, albeit a fun one.
You Have to Win the Game - An unforgiving retro platformer, but its short length, unlimited lives and frequent checkpoints mean it’s not too tough to casually muddle your way through. Don’t be afraid to look up a walkthrough – your goals are deliberately obfuscated for the Aesthetic™.
