WIP Wednesday

For this WIP Wednesday, have a short section from Thuiskomst, (Homecoming) featuring Inej coming back to Ketterdam after six weeks. Kaz greets her at Fifth Harbor, but ends up having issues with a hug in public in the rain. She meets him back at the Slat...

“I think I can offer a better hug now,” he rumbled, and Inej could hear the yearning there.

She stepped forward even as she replied, “I’d love that.”

This time they were dry, with no hats in the way, and no one to see them press together. Kaz wrapped her in his arms, and Inej was home. She returned his embrace with every fiber of her being. His lips brushed the top of her hair as he murmured, “Me mangave pa.” 

It took Inej a moment to realize what she’d heard. Oh my sweet man… your pronunciation needs a little work, but I adore you. She wasn’t about to let him go, even if she wanted to stare at him with shock for telling her in Suli that he loved her. With her face nuzzled against his soft black dress shirt, she replied softly, “Me isto, me drage.” Me too, my beloved.

They stayed entangled in each other’s arms for a few long minutes. Krai decided she needed to be a part of their reunion, and was twining around their legs. The cat was largely ignored as they communed with each other. Kaz laid kisses on Inej’s hair, lightly massaging over her leather vest. She returned the favor, rubbing his lower back. A low, satisfied groan came from him. Aside from his lips on her scalp, no skin touched yet. Just getting to be within the circle of his arms again was captivating. Inej inhaled, reveling in Kaz’s scent. But there was also the smell of hutspot and sausage and fried dough, and her stomach reminded her aloud it had been a long while since lunch on The Wraith. Kaz chuckled, the delightful sound vibrating her cheek. “I think you might be hungry, my beloved.”

Inej pulled back enough to be able to gaze up at his face, admiring the sight up close and personal. As much as she wanted more in the way of contact with him, she had to admit that eating was a solid plan. “I am. And you got us a lovely dinner, from the looks of it.”

“There’s one problem,” Kaz said with a devilish glint to his eyes. He was far more at ease now. 

Saints, I missed him like this. “Oh, and what’s that?”

“I am fairly certain I have to let you go in order for us to eat.”

Inej laughed, and watched as his face went tender, the glint in his eyes replaced with softness.

im rereading six of crows/crooked kingdom and every time someone on the team thinks about how kaz is meaner, smarter, and nastier than the big bad they’re up against i gain +5 life points. inej so sure no one can outsmart kaz! jesper basically comforting wylan with the reminder that kaz is so nasty and ruthless he’s going to raze his dickwad father to the ground and wylan a) absolutely believing kaz can and will do it and b) absolutely finding comfort in it. everyone is always going on and on about how cruel and unfeeling kaz is, but when their back is against the wall and there’s an enemy coming at them, they hear his cane or think about him and they feel relief! they feel safe! he’s a thug but he’s THEIR thug and frankly, as someone who imprinted on kaz like a baby duckling the first time i read the books, it’s a fucking godsend!

Note: Here it is! First part of the letters to her series. This is super short, I was struggling to figure out what to write for this letter, but I promise the rest are better. I am also trying a new writing style. Enjoy!

“Oh my.”

“What is it?”

Y/n managed to misplace her necklace—yet again—turning what was supposed to be a delightful date into a search mission for the elusive piece of jewelry.

Kaz was grateful she had agreed to getting some food and dining in. The past week had been a whirlwind of meetings with everyone in the forsaken city, leaving him overwhelmed. He'd endured an excessive amount of handshakes, enough to last a year, maybe three.

But Y/n understood. After all, she had been by his side since he could remember, never passing judgment on him for anything.

"Love?" He called out again. Kaz despised the silence. It could only mean two things: something good or something really bad.

“Y/n?” Usually, he was the type to lean towards options that gave him more than a fifty-fifty chance.

“Y/n!”

“Yes! Sorry I just-“

He found her in the dining room. “What is it?” As he approached, he noticed she was holding something in her hand. However, before he even had the chance to ask about it, she turned, fully facing him with her hand extended out.

"This," she said, glancing at what Kaz now recognized as an aged letter, "happens to be the first letter you ever wrote me."

She cleared her throat, preparing to read the letter to him.

“Deer Y/n,”

“For fuck’s sake.”

Kaz remembered that day with as much clarity as he remembered his lunch from a couple of hours ago.

It hadn't been anything out of the ordinary, no. Yet, he remembered it nonetheless.

“What is the matter with you?”

"Deer." He pointed at the word that was meant to be 'dear'. "Are you not reading?"

“I am and I’m well aware of the fact that is says deer. Once again, what’s the matter with you?”

“Can you put it away, it’s embarrassing.”

“Kaz, you were five.”

He had indeed been five, and apparently, not the brightest when it came to spelling. However, he laid the blame on his dad, who assured him it had looked good enough to send.

“How do you even have that still?”

“I could never lose it.”

“It’s just a letter, Y/n.”

“The first letter I ever got from you.” She corrected.

“It’s still just a letter, Y/n.”

“Whatever Kaz. It’s my most priced possession.”

He could tell she intended to keep reading the letter, but as her mouth open to let out the words, he noticed a mischievous glint in her eye.

“That and the drawing, of course.”

“The drawing?”

“The drawing.”

Kaz really had thought that it couldn’t get worse. Of course he hadn’t needed her to read the letter for him, so he had more than enough time to realize just how bad his grammar had once been.

But then, she decided to turn back around to grab the drawning and show him.

“I miss spots.” she said. In truth, he shared that sentiment. Spots had been his first and only pet.

He had entertained the idea of getting another pet with her. Perhaps another feline, or a loyal canine. Maybe even a crow. A replacement for the family he knew he couldn’t provide to her. “He was a great cat.”

“Indeed. He had to put up with you everyday.”

“I-, You know what? Same goes for you.”

That laugh. He was convinced that her laughter was the only force capable of resurrecting him from death. That and her eyes, of course, especially when they sparkled with mischievousness.

“Wait! Look,” Before he had a chance to see what she was pointing at, she covered the letter with her hand, completely defeating the purpose of asking someone to look.

“I am trying.”

"No, wait. Before I show you, you know how you always ask why I always sign: Love, my name, and then an exclamation mark with a heart instead of a dot?"

If he was honest, the question about her peculiar signature had crossed his mind only a couple of times. However, with the letter concealed and her mischievous grin, he wondered if uncovering the reason was a journey worth embarking on. “Mhmm...”

“Look!” She said while pointing at Kaz’s - or, well, five year old kaz’s signature. “Look, look, look, look, look.” Kaz couldn’t help but smile at her excitement, but he still couldn’t fathom why she was making such a fuss over his childhood attempt at penmanship. “Sweetheart, I am looking.”

There it was, his old signature in all its glory, proudly proclaiming, "Love, Kaz!"

I finally got the dream curse!!

I had a dream where I, a couple of people, and a bunch of cats from BarrenClan went into a weird cave to look for a deer named Starspot, who had the ability to use magic. We were on a mission to recruit her before Deepdark could, and so she could explode him from a distance.

But instead of that, we found a god, humanoid, glowing blue with white eyes and cat ears, who declared that they were the greatest god. They picked up Asphodelpaw and an anthropomorphic flower and ate them both as a display of power. The only way to defeat them was to give them a challenge they couldn’t beat.

Which turned out to be a challenge in itself, as more and more people ended up being eaten after this god just bent reality to make the challenge beatable. Pinepaw challenged them to a race, and the god just teleported to the finish line.

Soon it was only three people left: myself, Mallowstar (who was my father somehow, despite me being very much human) and Kaz Brekker (from Six of Crows). Kaz had an idea for a truly unbeatable challenge: in order for the god to win, Kaz had to say the word “debt.” I suggested adding a time limit, because if he ever said it in passing then that could be it. He agreed, and chose one minute.

We sat at my kitchen table with the god and explained the rules. They weren’t able to decline a challenge, so it began.

The god tried making small talk, which Kaz responded with one word answers. The god became more desperate as the time started to run out, and just screamed the word “DEBT!” over and over.

As the clock hit zero, the god turned into dust and swirled away. The three of us were free to leave.

As we left, I turned to Mallowstar and asked if we ever actually found Starspot in this horrible journey. We had not. We kinda just went “welp” and walked to my car.

This really took for me a ride, I love it. The plot twist of appearance of Kaz? Delightful. Your Dad Mallowstar? My dad too. The fact that you didn't accomplish anything in the end, such a dream thing to happen.

You've been up for a while now, leaving your still sleeping lover to stay in bed by himself. You threw the coffee on and ate breakfast quietly on the back porch. You left the door open, closing just the screen behind you.

Kazutora got up without you hearing. Running around, doing his morning rituals. But in the time that he got himself up and moving, you called your mom and were talking to her for a few minutes before she told you she had to get going to work.

Kazutora only caught the ass end of the conversation and what he heard, he couldn't believe.

"...I love you." And he saw you sit up and turn around after he gave himself away with his heavy footsteps.

He just stood there, eyes trained on you as though he were seeing you for the first time all over again.

"Mornin' baby. How'd you sleep?" You stood after a few seconds had gone by, "Are you ... did something happen from the time you got up to now? Are you ok?" Walking over to him, you wrapped your arms up and stood on your tiptoes to give him a kiss. "Hi." You said.

"H-hi. I mean, morning to you, too. A-and I - I love you, too."

Your eyes got wide and a smile spread across your lips. "'Tora ... where's this coming from? And what do you mean 'too'? Like, 'Good morning and I love you' or ... I don't know. But I love you, too ... too. Also?" You squealed and jumped into his arms, knocking him to the ground. You followed him down and landed on top of his outstretched body.

"What do you mean 'too'? You said it first, y/n. D-Didn't you?" He looked away, embarrassed. "Right?"

"I did. I did say it. But I was saying goodbye to my mom. She had to go to work. I was on the phone, Kaz'." You kissed his nose. "That doesn't change anything though. I have been hoping you'd say it to me. I was afraid to say it first."

Tucking your face into his neck, you felt his lips brush your forehead. "You were afraid to say it first?" He laughed softly. "Cats outta the bag now. Ssssoooo ... I gotta go meet the guys. But, um, I ... love you. Ok?"

You nodded. "Ok, I love you, too, baby."

~ Mikey ~

It was hotter than hell in Mikey's apartment. You don't know why the man didn't believe in fans or having the windows open at the very least.

"Fans are bad for your muscles. When you're sweating hard from a workout and a fan hits you, it causes your warmed up muscles to clench up suddenly and ---" he looked at your obvious lack of interest and continued, "you don't care, do you?"

You shook your head, "I don't care. It's hotter than the sun in here, 'Jiro. Please, God, come on. Just a small one for me?"

"No, darlin'. Cuz wherever you are, there I am, too." He went down the hallway to grab you a cold washcloth to put over the back of your neck.

You got up and stomped into the kitchen, opening the freezer and stuffing your face and as much of your upper body into it as would reach. "Oh ... oh my God, I love you so much. Thank you thank you thank you."

Mikey stood at the kitchen door and he was smiling like an idiot. You laughed, "The heat finally getting to you?"

"Mm-mm. But you are. Come here, pretty girl." He waited for you to walk to him.

"Manjiro Sano, it is too hot for this shit. I'm not in the mood to smash my body against yours right now. Maybe later, ok?" You turned back to the freezer. "Ugh. Love you so much."

"'Right, I'll come to you then." He stood behind you and laid the cold, wet cloth over your shoulders. "Better, baby?"

"Yes, thank you so much." You breathed a sigh of relief and closed the freezer door. Turning to face him, you saw that dumb look on his sweet face. "What? Why do you look like that?"

"Ohhh, no reason. Jus' ... jus' love you, too." He shrugged and donned the biggest grin you'd ever seen.

"Wha--- ohh!! Mikey! N---," you stopped and took in how thoroughly happy he looked. "Ok. Yeah, I love you, too."

~ Draken ~

It was your 3 month anniversary and Draken had taken you out to your favorite restaurant for dinner and then he plopped you on the back of his motorcycle and you rode out in the moonlight to his favorite spot on the outskirts of town.

"Thank you for dinner. It was really, really - so delicious. I loved it." You smiled sweetly as he waved you over to stand closer to him.

"'M glad. Can't believe it's already been 3 months. It doesn't seem like that long, huh? Not that - shit - I didn't mean ... never mind. I'm just having a good time with you an' they say time flies when you're having fun. So, that's all I meant. 'M gonna shut up now." He chuckled and looked away, feeling a little embarrassed.

"No! No, I know what you mean. I'm really happy. With you! I'm really happy with you, too, is what I meant. Wow! I swear I didn't drink anything at dinner." You were sure you were 10 times more embarrassed than he was.

He told you he'd be right back and walked over to use the bathroom. You were left standing there, looking over at his bike where your leftovers were sitting on the seat.

"What's the harm in having a few more bites of that amazing dinner?" You said to yourself as you casually meandered over to the bag.

Digging into the container with your fingers (of all utensils) you shoved a big gob of noodles in your mouth.

A car drove by and their headlights shone directly on you, blinding you for a moment.

"Holy ... oh jeez. This ... you are so ... I love you ... I love you. Mmmm."

"Y/n? Wh- fuck man, fuck it. I love you too!" Draken practically shouted from where he stood behind you.

You nearly jumped out of your skin when you heard him say that. "Where - when did you get back?" Your heart was racing in your chest so hard you're sure it was visible in your skin."

"I said I was comin' back an' not to scream or somethin'. I suppose the car driving by was louder than my voice. I'm sorry, did'n mean to startle you. But uh, yeah. I love you, too." He bent over to kiss you and tasted the noodle sauce on your lips. "Hell yeah, what're we eatin'? I'm hungry again, too. Gimme a bite, sweetheart."

You smirked and shook your head side to side so slightly that in the cover of darkness, you're sure he couldn't see you.

"Anything for the man I love."

In Chapter 1, Jesper & Wylan visit Kaz and Krai cat at the Slat:

Wylan, deciding no one needed him at the moment, moved himself and the satchels against the wall out of the way. When Krai followed, he sat cross legged on the floor. Some part of his mind pointed out that he was an upstanding member of the Merchant Council, sitting on the floor in the Slat. It was generally drowned out by the rest of his mind saying what amounted to ‘Kitty’. The cat in question immediately made herself at home in his lap. Inej wasn’t lying about her fur either. So soft.

A: yes and no. it's complicated lol. daniel is biologically their brother, but they view him as a cousin and he does the same. it's like that with marcus too (if marcus wasn't evil) daniel calls tasha aunt and douglas dad, while the rats call tasha mom and douglas douglas lmao

essentially when building their family tree they go less by genetics and more by emotional connection, which is why leo is referred to as their brother and daniel isn't (which he's fine with) they used to view donald as their dad and douglas as their uncle, but the line blurred after aijaf so douglas has a weird mix of the roles now (he felt more paternal than uncle affection for them, naomi and leo included, way before but didn't want to step on the kids' toes)

The Promised Day - Part 3

Man, I left this for a while. God. Too much to do, too little time, and work is fucking exhausting. But let’s talk about the ending, finally.

Where last we stood, the Great Seal was cast, and everything faded to white.

Probably the closest any of you will ever get to seeing the Sea of Souls.

It’s crushing, how upset they are that everyone made it but one person. Honestly, I get the sense that any number of casualties would have been too much. This was an all-or-nothing fight. It was supposed to be that everyone goes home, or no one does.

But no, the one person they lost was their leader. In the end, there was nothing they could do.

…….it’s not the Sea of Souls, it’s the Universe. Oh god. Of course he can hear them.

He does sound proud of them, though.

SEES is returned to the front of the school, Tartarus dissolves into light, and Minato walks out of the now-normal building so that everyone can hug him and cry all over him. If I didn’t know how this ends, I’d be really mad about ten minutes from now.

I do like that, after the timeskip, this version of the ending starts the exact same way as the other one, since they still don’t have their memories in this version.

Man oh man am I popular, though. This isn’t even all my social links, and look how many people want to talk to me!

It’s morbidly hilarious that this game literally started the trend of “walk around and talk to everyone the day before the ending”, but Minato’s the only modern protag who wasn’t going to leave. Not by choice, anyway.

We find out that Kenji is excited because apparently there are going to be three new teachers next year, and they’re all hot. So he has learned nothing. Lots of social links sent letters, because the end of their link was literally them leaving town.

The Gourmet King is gone (no tears here). Maiko’s dad says she’s doing well but also says I’m absolutely not allowed to marry her. We’re able to give Akinari’s mom the notebook with his story in it. Mamoru and Kaz are doing fine. Bebe, tragically, has decided not to come back to Japan right away. He’s gonna stay with his uncle for a while so they can grieve his aunt together.

Ms. Toriumi is taking the accidental revelation that I’m her MMO buddy very well.

God I laughed so hard.

As Mitsuru makes her graduation speech, SEES starts to remember, and rushes for the roof, where Aigis and Minato are already skipping the ceremony.

That’s a long time.

I ended up dating Aigis just because I actually maxed her link, and I think the only other girl I maxed was Yuko? Maybe? And Maya, but that wasn’t a romance option, which I still think is weird.

So, the credits. They, uh, didn’t have to do that. Like, it’s brilliant. Having his silhouette sinking deeper and deeper and gradually fading away to represent him doing the same. He vanishes completely and only then does it end, and we get to see SEES reach the roof just barely too late. Beautifully done, Atlus, I started tearing up, how dare you. X’D

And then the main menu is no longer the Dark Hour.

So, overall, other than some nitpicks, I think this was a really solid game. But as a modern remake of a preexisting game, I think they could have gone further. Why NOT just make your male teammates possible social links? Why NOT include Hamuko? Why NOT include The Answer with the base game? Why lie and say you want the “core” (read: original base game) P3 experience, but then add new things?

Why make Ryoji tell you he wants to be more than friends and then not give you a third dialogue option?!?!?

(I know the answer is money. It’s always money. I am just salty.)

But I could forgive more of that if they hadn’t nerfed the final boss. I did some googling, and pinpointed some other things about the Nyx Avatar fight that didn’t line up. Before, he could attack twice per turn. This one can’t. They gave the Death Arcana an extra thousand health, but the old version automatically took half-damage from EVERYTHING except almighty. They took away Moonless Gown, and therefore took away his ability to become invulnerable. Apocalypse can reduce your HP to 1%, but if he’s not attacking twice per turn, someone always has time to heal, so who even cares?

(Shoutout to the Fandom wiki for being like, “It is strongly encouraged to heal when it uses this skill”. No shit, guys. Wow.)

And yeah, they buffed his spells up a level, but ultimately, all the things that might have actually made the boss genuinely hard got nerfed.

It kind of sucks. They gave him a cool new color scheme for the final arcana and then weakened him. Why even.

Anyway, gonna do NG+ on hard mode to finish all social links and the compendium, and also probably going to do something really stupid like solo the Avatar with my level 99 Minato and Thanatos just for giggles.

Because hell yeah. :D

Nothing's changing that.” “But…he has his life now, a job, a house…” Kazuo's eye welled with tears, “And I can't tell him enough times how fuckin’ proud of him I am!”

Gav sat down, squeezing his shoulder, “He's still gonna be around, he lives a couple miles away.” “I know, but…” Kazuo rolled over, “I want him to know how much he means to me. My dad…all he ever did was force me to get my bartender's license so that he could take my money. I got no encouragement, no love, no words of wisdom other than ‘cut your hair, you fucking faggot,’ and…”

He swallowed hard, “Anders needs to remember that he can come to us for anything.” “He knows,” Ian brushed Kazuo's hair from his face, “Kaz?” “Yeah, Ian?” “Out of all of us…you're the best dad.” “What?” He sat halfway up. “It's true,” Gav sat back on his hands, “You're…you have the temperament.” “Anders loves all of us, but you…the way you two engage, there is obvious, deep love there, the love between a father and his son.”

“I try…”

Kazuo's voice wavered, tears streaking his cheek, “I try to be the dad that I always wanted. The only one who wanted me was my mom. I want Anders to know that he is wanted, he is my boy, I will love him until I die.” “Oh, Kaz,” Ian teared up, “You have so much to give. I'm so proud of you, you've grown so much since we met.”

“Have I?”

“Your love for this family has never wavered.”

Kazuo sat up, Gav and Ian immediately embracing him. “You're a sweet, sweet man.” “If you're this good of a father, just wait ‘til you can be my husband.” Kazuo giggled, wiping his eye, “I'm so lucky to have you guys.” “We're lucky to have you. Kaz, if I hadn't had you when Anders came to live here…I would have been lost. I don't think even Maureen could have helped me. You made me realize I could raise a child…if I had a partner to help me.”

“I'm glad I was there.” “There we go,” Gav patted Kazuo's back, “You wanna go to Little Deli?” “Oh my god, yes, I'm sore from carrying bags and tiny boxes.” Ian helped him up, Kazuo embracing him, Gav embracing them both. Kazuo knew they weren't just placating him - they meant it.

as mentioned before, they're twins. kaz is technically older than zap but not by much. doesn't really stop her from using this technicality over him to get her way tho lol

they're smaller than both of their parents in some way or another. given zap's build takes more after kaput's, he's naturally shorter than zosky but he's definitely not as bulky as kaput is. kaz is taller than zap but she's got stubbier limbs so she's shorter than zosky

kaz is, without a doubt, kaput's daughter. she was a lil gremlin of a baby & no doubt liked to torment her dads + brother (& bite them. oh how she liked to bite em). it's p clear though that she's not quite as reckless as kaput is; there is definitely some meticulous and calculated behaviours tht come w/ her actions. which is fantastic for her. bad for everyone else < 3

zap is the opposite. as a lil kid, he was a more on the timid & quiet side, though that definitely didn't mean he caused his own mischief. it's just that while kaz was clearly a wild child, he was prolly more sneaky about it. anyway, as a young teen, zap likes to think of himself as intellectual & tries to lean more towards zosky's approach to things. however, he's a lil more on the sensitive + emotional side & is definitely prone to losing his cool easy so. yeah KJGHGKJ

re: zap losing his cool, that is, more often than not, how fights wind up starting between the twins lol. kaz likes to poke & tease, zap hates it & on more than one occasion it's led to them fighting like cats n dogs (at which point kaput & zosky are practically re-enacting the incredibles "i need you to intervene!" "you want me to intervene? ok!" scene KJGHFG)
