Hestia - we meet!

Yesterday we finally saw her in person!

Despite 53 hours of travel, within minutes of landing on St Maarten, we dashed of to see the boat, another 45 minutes drive away. And when we saw her all the stress, anxiety, worries over the last few weeks suddenly seemed to dissipate!

Friday the 8th was my last day at work. I thought we had given ourselves plenty of time to sort wills, insurances, visas, banking, shopping and PACKING! Packing the bags, packing the house, emptying the refrigerator, emotional packing i.e. catching up with friends and family.

We thought we were ahead of the game the boat would be surveyed on the12th as planned, there would be some negotiations and finally, we would close the deal. Our rep cum engineer would start work latest by Thursday 14th and the boat would be semi-ready by the time we got here. Guess what?

It started with a call at 3am Sydney time on Wednesday 13th from the boat yard. Everyone was waiting but no sign of the surveyor.

The previous day, 12 hours prior to the scheduled survey, we had an email from the surveyor reminding us how they were impartial and unbiased and that some of our requests were not really part of their job! To this we had sent a staunch response as they had received our email 3 weeks ago and had acknowledged the survey date.

So may be the no show on the day shouldn't have really surprised us but it did as the surveyor's office called 4 hours after scheduled time to inform s in Sydney that there would be no survey!

Every cloud has a silver lining and this was ours. Lindsay our man managed to find us an alternate surveyor (unbiased) within 24 hours, the boat yard had availability the next day and we had a detailed survey done. The results highlighted some dodgy work and bad maintenance of the boat, many of these issues would have been prevalent in the initial survey but missed. This meant that even though the boat was overall in a good condition, we would have to spend a considerable amount of time and money making it seaworthy for the high seas and getting it ready for our voyage.

The communication and dealings about all this sent us in a negative time mode, constant late night calls on Skype and seeking advise over the internet was time consuming and tiring.

Highlighting possible delays!

The flight to St. Maarten was long, actually three flights with several hours of transit in two different cities and the gruelling security checks at the American airports. 53 hours of travel time in total.

24 hours since we have arrived on this island and very little seems to have changed. The vendor is still hung and we are still camping at Lindsay's. We have also tried to get a SIM card but there is an island wide shortage. They expect these to arrive on Friday. We are on island time now..... on island pace!

Hey, we have had some good food, made new friends in Lindsay and his partner Margie and done the touristy thing of standing on the beach watching an aircraft land on world's 4th most dangerous airport to land!

Tomorrow my cousins Shalaka & Shyam arrive from New York. Looking forward to catching up with them and being a full on tourist.
