why does ford call stan “lee” in stancest fics? is it a reference i’m not familiar with? 😭 i feel so lost every time it happens haha i’m new to the fandom (yes, in the year of 2024)

How exciting to get my first anon ask, and welcome to Stancest. It's a lovely ship, and it's very dear to my heart, so it's absolutely delightful to see that it has resonated with you too.

I don't know exactly where the Lee nickname originated because it's been around since long before I got into Stancest, but I think it comes from This Divide Between You And I by cellard00rs on AO3 - you get a pretty solid reason for it that I won't spoil if you haven't read it yet.

I also think people like it because it's a parallel to Ford, where their nicknames are their individual parts of their name, and it makes more sense to people that Stan is Lee, because it means none of them is Stan, which is the most typical pet name for any Stanley, Stanford, or Stanislav.

I personally don't use Lee for Stan because it's not to my taste, but it is absolutely a part of Stancest history, and it's still very popular in fanworks today.

I think the only fanfic I've ever seen where Mabel, Dipper, Soos, and Wendy know that Stan and Ford dated when they were teenagers was This Divide Between You And I by cellard00rs. Like, there is so much drama that can happen with them knowing about that and the forms that each of them come to accept it and all. I find it strange that I don't see many fanfics about this. Like, I don't even ship Stancest, I just read the fanfics about it for the drama and angust, because I like to see chaos.

First of all, sorry for not getting back to you sooner, Anon!

Second of all, I don't and I won't claim to be a conscious encyclopedia of every piece of Stancest fanart drawn or written or sung, lost or still existing, but I think you're right. Personally, I wouldn't find it exciting to write about, partly because it doesn't interest me much to explore - Divide did it just fine for me to be satisfied - partly because I can't see my way out of either acceptance, con or sin bumps in the road, or complete lack thereof, and therefore I'm "done" before I even begin.

Add to that, that while I love wrangling the fingerprints that the Stans' parents left on their psyches, the semi-parent relationship with the niblings, Soos, and Wendy and from thereof connected feelings isn't interesting to me to put my hands into, as I have zero real life parental instincts (apart from saving my cat from eating plastic), hahaha.

That being said, I'm obviously not the only fanart creator out there, and I think this community is ripe with talent who could make this flavour compelling. So, here you go: a broad appeal to the nation for more open incest art!

Okay, let me show this... because I asked what I should draw and the answer from lilibethdrawsreylo was "Hallmark" and I already knew about cellard00rs idea of Hallmark meets horror. So on the same day just before she uploaded the first chapter I managed to draw this... concept fanart? It's wrong though. I got so much wrong from the few informations I had XD. Still a little bit... of christmas meets horror.
