A view of Mendenhall Glacier that I think most tourists miss. That is, the visitor's center is about 1.5 miles (2 km) to the right of the camera. This is a trail that isn't quite a trail. It is roughly marked, but by this point it was not a maintained trail up the west side of the lake. The glacier is easily accessible from Juneau as the city borders the park. I mean, people get to live here! Or at least a couple of miles from this exact spot. I liked this view for the barren colors between the rocks, the glacier, and the mountains. Granted it's not the best view of the glacier, but I have other pics of that I've shared before. From here, I made it to the glacier by going around to the left of this knoll (since there was a pretty fast creek running down in that gully you can kind of see toward the bottom). As someone said, it is beautifully heartbreaking that where I'm standing for this picture would have been under the glacier less than 10 years ago. But change - even change we don't like is part of the cosmos. I stopped by here intentionally on a layover for a business trip. I like to do that when I can. The weather wasn't the greatest as it started to rain about the time I took this pic. By the time I got back to the motel I was very sore, drenched, and tired. I took a very nice, long, HOT bath to start to recover. All in all this was a bit of an adventure for this out of shape guy. Schlosspark St. Emmeram, Regensburg, Germany. One of my inlaws was born and raised in Germany and his mother and brother still live there. So when we had our Eurpean vacation a few years ago, we stayed in Regensburg for a couple of nights.
