5. What are your fanfic pet peeves? Do they have a huge effect on whether or not you decide to read something?

LOL i love how everyone has asked me this do i come off as so bitter? i sure do lol. anyway another peeve of mine is really naff ~foriegn language~ bits esp. as like. rubbish sexy talk. people making a character go oooh ma petite chou-fleur in the heat of the moment shfgdjshds fuck off

10. What’s your favorite fandom, pairing, or character to read fic for?

this is a tough one! when i go hunting for fics i normally start w my Fave Character Tags (... treavor pendleton, george hodgson ao3 pages saved to my phone bookmarks smhhhh). probably dishonored fic is my fave to read actually? bc people do so much fun stuff with The World :^)

11. How do you come up with your fic titles?

normally they come from a spoken line in the text of the fic! or sometimes a bit of description... or something from the canon. like the working title for a different kind of man was "stained glass". the fics in the takes two to quarrel series were all named for lines in the fics, except for imperfect life which i lifted directly from canon text (and the series was named for a line in imperfect life)

nlwib's name comes from that one line of wallace's in game thats like - "I must prepare the mourning garments. His lordship has never looked well in black.". i often think that if i was gonna do a cleanup re-write i would just call it in black, but i did start posting it nearly eleven years ago and my Style has evolved since then lol

16. Do you research for your fics? If so, how deep of a rabbit hole have you gone down by accident when researching?

HFJSDKFHKS SEE MYSTERY MAN PART 2 in which I accidentally uncovered the history of one of the rl officers of the franklin expedition and have since seen real life Scholars talk abt things that were literally lost to history until i connected a bunch of dots on accident while trying to find out what early 19thc. eton was like. for a fanned fiction. me @ franklin scholars: get on my level wankers lol

17. How obsessively do you sit and stare at your fic after you’ve just posted and wait for feedback?

TOO OBSESSIVELY and it never ends well. i am trying to hold back on this bc. drac your fics are too niche your majesty they'll kill your self-esteem your majesty. never 4 get that the only comment i got on nlwib chapter 15 was "shame it wasnt gay" :/

19. Do you edit your fics after you write them, or do you prefer to just hit post and run (because it’s someone else’s problem now)?

i don't really Edit edit? things come and go as i write, then i'll get a version i like and probably give it a once-over in the ao3 preview to look for typos.

25. Do you listen to music as you write? If possible, link your writing playlist.

i don't really listen to music while i'm writing bc i get too distracted! either by lyrics or A Good Bit in instrumental music lol. but sometimes I'll play a single song on repeat through the entire thing like a deranged animal. i think the last nlwib chapter was written to Paris 1919 by John Cale on repeat for abt 40 hours lmao

Jamie Tartt / general happiness. If there is a person who kind of breathed on him nice one time, I want to hear about it. Jamie and the rest of the team I am particularly interested in, because while Ted Lasso as a whole is a good show, it did not often give us ensemble-hangs-out plotlines, and I love a good ensemble.

M - Name a character that you’d like to have for a friend.

I - Has Tumblr caused you to stop liking any fandoms, if so, which and why?

MCU. After a while I got tired of seeing the characters I liked from the comics getting watered down, and it drove me crazy to see how much fandom liked the watered down versions.

E - Have you added anything cracky/hilarious to your fandom? If so, what?

It's probably the cat thing, isn't it? Though I'm quite proud of my Richmond injury list

S - Show us an example of your personal headcanon (prompts optional but encouraged)

I just posted a very long one about Jamie and Isaac, but the long and short of it is that they send each other selfies of their outfits for the day every morning.

F - What’s the longest you’ve ever been in a fandom?

The first fandom I was in was Dragon Ball Z. As I am still ingesting fan content for it, I would say I am still in the fandom. So that's about 25 years.

O - Choose a song at random. Which ship or character does it remind you of?

This was vaguely rigged because of how often I've been listening to my character playlists. The song that came on is 'Passing through a Screen Door' by The Wonder Years, Little Kruta. It's not only from my Jamie Tartt playlist, but some of the lyrics are chapter titles in one of my fics.

T - Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending?

Answered the big one already, but for a minor stupid headcanon that I'll put up in a place of prominence: after Wembley, Higgins was informed of what happened. He was distraught for the role he unknowingly played. He delicately put word to security to let him know if any complaints were filed or needed to be filed to keep Jamie's dad off the premises. And when no complaints were filed...

...look, he's a middle manager at heart. He's used to doing what needs done without people telling him to do it or even knowing he took care of it. Unbeknownst to anyone outside of the Directors of Beboperations (plus a few favors called in),Jamie's dad is banned from a number of stadiums across the country (12 and counting).

B - A pairing–platonic, romantic or sexual–that you initially didn’t consider, but someone changed your mind.

Richard and Jan Maas. They're asshole 4 asshole. I get it.

L - Say something genuinely nice about a character who isn’t one of your faves. (Characters you’re neutral about are fair game, as are characters you merely dislike. Characters that you absolutely loathe with the fire of ten thousand suns are exempt, as there is no point in giving yourself an aneurysm over a character that you hate.)

For someone whose purpose is narrative villain, I find the character of Rupert interesting. He's charming, he's determined, he's relentless, he's socially gifted - all positive traits that double as flaws. You see why Rebecca fell for him as easily as you see why she loathes him.

this is so random but every time i see you in my notifs i read your username as quinnmorgoffengender or something and it took me MONTHS to realize it is in fact somebody’s name

Lmaoooo that's fantastic! but, just because today the show turned 26...

let me just say I think everyone should watch it. It truly has some of the best character development of all time, particularly Quinn, but you see the changes in everyone over time and it's the most accurate depiction of high school imo - I'm aware things are different for gen zers, but I think it still rings true. I love it so much I have two copies of it on DVD (one that was uhhhh not so legal but therefore has the original soundtrack), I have two versions of it on my computer, I basically have every episode memorized, I've dressed as Quinn for Halloween (though very few people recognize it), I can tell you the plot of each episode by just the title, I have a page on my blog where you can rank the episodes, and I even wrote fic combining that world with one of my other all time favorite shows, Arrested Development called You're Standing on My Neck (a line from the theme song, which goes tf off!) and it even has a sequel mostly written around one dumb, stupid, ridiculous joke I had combined with one specific episode, My Night at Tony's. ...And in the very first chapter of that one I all but paused the action for four characters to watch Clueless and Top Gun, because of course I did lol.

And while there are obviously many ways to watch it, if you want the most legal way, it's streaming on Paramount+, but it doesn't have the two TV movies (one between s4 and 5 and one that served as the finale after s5, though the first one is more important because it literally resolves cliffhanger relationship stuff from s4 but WHATEVER, PARAMOUNT)

1. Share a song that makes you think of [fic title]

Here's the song Long Time Running is named after. It is probably fair to say most Americans know The Tragically Hip from the song Ahead By A Century, which was the theme song for Anne With An E; the band never made it big in the States, but in Canada their music is beloved. Ahead By A Century was a close runner up for fic title and instead made it as a title for a very deserving chapter. (I think and overthink song title choices)

11. Do you have specific playlists for writing fics?

In my fic, music is a character in its own right. I use diegetic music (in-universe music the characters can hear), 'secret' music references as song lyrics baked into normal dialogue; a treat for the reader if they know the song (for example, my Deacon gets to say, "Not.. Quite razzle-dazzle, not quite my tempo. But.. Not bad at all,") as well as songs for each chapter title. These songs are all in Long Time Running - Every Song Ever. I have an in-universe radio station called Radio Free Calgary that has its own playlist, mostly for keeping track of Canadian artists I wanted represented in the fic. I also have several playlists in progress for specific characters; here's Deacon's playlist! RJ's is next.

Music is very important to me; I wanted to be a music journalist as a kid and edited punk zines in my earlier 20's. There was no fic without treating music as a character. Even Nora stays alive through the presence of her fave music surviving the bombs.

17. What’s something you’ve learned about while doing research for a fic?

I did a lot of math. I calculated how many miles per day it would take to walk the Appalachian Trail from Little Lamplight/Luray Caverns to Boston, to tell the story of how Lucy and RJ made it to Boston the first time. I also worked out helicopter fuel math to inform how far a vertibird could fly vs how often it would need to refuel. I would also argue the fic helped me go back to school; I am studying to be a paralegal and was teaching myself US/Massachusetts criminal law for fic research prior to enrolling.

Friend: I would love to hear the story behind Time It Has No Day. Any particular inspirations? Any particular head-canon projects you were pursuing? Did you make a mood board? Did you make a playlist? Basically you should imagine what question you wish people would ask you about your story, and pretend I have asked it here!

My inspo playlist on Spotify is here. I will walk you through it under the Read More. I'm SO psyched to do this, you have no idea! Thank you, friend! :)

1. "Eyes of A Child !" (The Moody Blues): This is where the phrase "Time It Has No Day" comes from. Very early on in the project, the fic was titled "Ponds by the Sea" instead. But then I picked a slightly more inland vacation spot for River and her parents, and decided to let my musical fangirling run free, hence the new title.

Tracks 2-3 helped me work up the Feels to write about River missing her parents. Honorary mention to "Chasing the Sun," another Sara Bareilles song from the same album as "Manhattan." With its mention of "a cemetery in the center of Queens" and the line "you said 'remember that life is not meant to be wasted," it always makes me think of Amy deciding to go back in time with her husband.

Tracks 4-6 are all played by Twelve on his guitar in the patio scene of chapter 6. "For Emily, Wherever I May Find Her," isn't mentioned by name. But it's what I hear when the Doctor "strikes up a repeating arpeggio," then suggests the name Emily for their baby.

7. "Kooks" (David Bowie): This was one of those songs I picked out super early and wrote towards. First of all, it's David Bowie, one of PCap's faves. And second, the pre-parental cuteness omg. I'm surprised this song's not referenced in more babyfics, tbh.

8. "Mean Old Man" (James Taylor): It has a kind of gentle humor that reminds me of Twelve and River's relationship in general. It's also loosely associated in my head with the scene where they're getting dressed for Ramon and Nardole's wedding.

9. "Overjoyed" (Stevie Wonder): Obviously I wanted Twelve to request a Stevie Wonder song for him and River to dance to. I considered "Isn't She Lovely?", but the words would be directed more at the baby than River. Also, I find that one a little too cheesy, even for me. I'm not thrilled with the lyrics of "Overjoyed," but I think that musically, it's one of Stevie's prettiest love songs. (Granted, I really only know his big hits.)

10. "Pink Moon" (Nick Drake): Pure self-indulgence, but can you blame me? Imagine Peter Capaldi singing and playing this song on a lazy summer evening, and tell me you don't melt.

11. "Lay, Lady, Lay" (Bob Dylan): I was a little bummed when I saw that Abbey Road was released 5 months too late for Anthony to bring home to his parents after spring break. Dylan worked out well, though, since 1) he was at the Isle of Wight (foreshadowing to chapter 16!) and 2) "Lay Lady Lay" has this kind of languid, laid-back romance to it that I think goes well with The Vibe(tm) of the whole fic.

12. "In the Still of the Night" (Ella Fitzgerald): Not my usual genre, but I can absolutely see River being an Ella Fitzgerald fan. I heard this song years ago and thought it was lovely. It was one of the first songs I added to the playlist, so I was "writing towards" it for a looong time.

13. "The Only Living Boy in New York" (Simon & Garfunkel): Runs through Amy's head when she imagines seeing her Raggedy Doctor again. Although I'm considering dropping the direct reference in Chapter 10, since it's highly improbable that readers will guess the correct song from the kinda-sorta-lyrics given. It'll always stay on my inspo list, though. :)

14. "Tuesday Afternoon" (The Moody Blues): Of course I had River and her parents meet up on a Tuesday Afternoon.

Tracks 15-16: Just some atmosphere for the cottage holiday chapters.

Tracks 17-18: These songs really were performed at the 1969 Isle of Wight festival. I had to go hunting through various performers' IOW 1969 setlists for something to give Jack his 'haunted moment.' I listened to some awesome new-to-me music in the process, before settling on "Ramblin' Boy."

19. "Gypsy" (The Moody Blues): This song was performed at the 1970 Isle of Wight festival. It wasn't released until November of '69. Having it appear in the band's August '69 set list is a leeetle stretch, but not impossible; it just would have been a "preview" from their upcoming album. (As Justin Hayward explains in the fic, lol.) I feel the stretch is justified by just how perfectly this song encapsulates Ten in Last of the Timelords Angst Mode(tm).

Tracks 20-25 are all directly referenced in the last few chapters of the fic.

22. "Fly Me to the Moon" (Frank Sinatra): When Peter received a BAFTA last year, Simon Blackwell talked about how Peter would sing "Fly Me to the Moon" for vocal warm-ups while filming In the Loop. (Can you imagine hearing that???) I just had to use that one, even if Twelve singing it to River during her labor would've been a much softer, gentler performance than vocal warm-ups.

23. "Time in a Bottle" (Jim Croce): Croce wrote this song when his wife told him she was pregnant. The reason River complains it's "too sad" is because it was released shortly after Croce was killed in a plane crash 3 years later.

Oof. Sorry to end on a bit of a downer there. I really appreciated this ask! The music I associate with this project is very special to me.

I think all fanfic should be self-indulgent, but I specifically let myself get as self-indulgent as I wanted with the music referenced in Time It Has No Day. I picked songs that resonated with me, or I thought would resonate with the characters, without paring down to what would be most recognizable or make the most sense.

Making Rory Williams a millennial Moody Blues fan? Why not? I know they exist because I am one, and I remember what it was like to be teased for it. (Although my peers have given me less flak as we've all grown up.) Making Twelve think the Moodies are boring? Well, I had to go for the Malcolm Tucker reference. Besides, it's good to poke a little fun at your own faves every once in awhile.

Currently working on:

I have a few OL WIPs I'm working on - not in any particular order: 1) PI!Jamie - seriously about to finish this fic...like soon, 2) A very porny Modern AU 1-shot that is deliciously nasty, probably post in May. The title is a delicious surprise that I can't wait to share, 3) Like Petals Falling, 4) Where Amorous Kisses Dwell, 5) Filth (the name of a 3 chapter Modern AU I want to finish by summer and post all at once), 6) Lost in the Wind, 7) the final chapter of The French Connection (yikes, I know).

I'm also working on a few original pieces I'm excited about. One is a converted fic I'm hoping to publish in September (Stay tuned for news!). The other two are romantic explorations of existential themes - one about isolation and the other about life/death (this does not make them sound interesting, but I promise they are sexy and meaningful and hopefully engaging).

Current obsession: Jamie and Claire. Always Jamie and Claire.

Flip Me Upside Down sounds intriguing.....

okayokay SO. you, my friend, have just chosen what is definitely the most convoluted out of all the options i provided and i love you for it

so FMUD is the first longterm project i started after the erasermight hyperfixation struck. it kinda initially existed as a 5 + 1 thing in a sense, before it became more of a properly structured story that incorporated other ideas i'd started writing independently. currently it's a bit over 17k words and the longest wip i have (although love enough is right behind it at 15k !) and split into sections / arcs that, currently, my plan is to have be separate fics in a series because it suits my organisation preferences better than a full chaptered story <3 Flip Me Upside Down is a placeholder title bc it was the name of the song i was listening to the most at the time and it's vaguely fitting. i still have no idea what i actually want to title it

plot-wise, it's fundamentally canon compliant except this time gayer because canon is a coward, starting with the usj attack and ending at the end of season 5. it's told entirely from aizawa's POV and simultaneously focuses on his lingering grief and attachment issues while developing his relationship with yagi from that initial irritation and disregard to genuine trust and affection. it's kind of an excuse to go through canon and unpack everything that happens in a more character focused sense with bonus erasermight agenda and development behind the scenes.

snippet is from one of my fave scenes so far which is aizawa begrudgingly seeking dating advice from mic after being forced to accept his tragic fate (having a crush) on principle of no longer being able to deny it to himself. if i get another ask w/ the name of this wip then i'll respond with a snippet of erasermight interaction bc there certainly is no shortage of it, it's just less funny than mic tormenting aizawa over his crush

"So what you're telling me is that you've already been on a date with the Symbol of Peace, and you're only just realising you might be into the guy?" "Will you stop calling him that?" Shouta doesn't bother to bite down on the frustration in his voice. "We're not talking about the Symbol of Peace. We're talking about Toshinori." Too late, he realises he's skipped over the date part entirely. "They're the same person, aren't they?" Unbothered, Hizashi returns his focus to his food. In a rare show of mercy, he doesn't acknowledge Shouta's failure to deny his allegations. Shouta looks away, considering his response. Where All Might was bold and brash and loud, Toshinori is timid. Restrained to an almost alarming extent, as if by making himself as innocuous as possible he can somehow preserve that ideal of All Might’s unstoppable power. Like he still needs to hide the man beneath, even now that his body can no longer play the part. Shouta’s change of heart began with those glimpses through the cracks. With Toshinori accepting his help. That night after Kamino, speaking candidly about how different the world looked now. Listening to him recount his history with All For One like an ugly secret he longed to leave behind in Tartarus. Those brief, harrowing, wonderful moments where Toshinori was true and earnest and human.

Do you title your fics before, during, or after the writing process? How do you come up with titles?

fuck titles, all my homies hate titles, etc etc. I don't think I've ever come up with a title first, but I can't say never for sure, so: sometimes during, often after. occasionally it'll be a significant line from the story itself, sometimes it'll be the classic thing of looking for a song lyric (and sometimes that means you are pitching me TMG lyrics), and once I just ended up with the dumbest description and couldn't think of anything else. (Looking thru the first page of my recent works, I swear there's one of every possible methodology, and actually I think Commit to the Bit I had the title either before or very early during the writing!)

Which of your fics would you call your wildest ride?

Carlita help (ie, for the benefit of all the broken hearts) - I say this both as a writer and about the story itself, the whole process has been a kind of extended madness, and also it's just a very odd piece altogether imho.

If someone were to make fanart of your work, what fic or scene would you hope to see?

we were talking about this on the phone yesterday! there is a scene in the next chapter of for the benefit of all the broken hearts that I would actually make good art. I also think there's some good visuals in the boss battle scene of The Reckoning Arrives that would be fun to have as art. (oooh, or Lucretia sitting at Taako's bedside after?) Oh, and Ed and Stede in the auxiliary closet in nice either way.

What’s the last fic you read? Do you recommend it?

I just read the second chapter of Respawn and it's very good. This AU gets something about Stede that I really appreciate, and Izzy's intro is fucking hilarious.

Of the characters you write for, which is your favorite? Has that choice been swayed at all by your followers/readers’ reactions to certain ones?

Is it possible????? that the unnamed wife (aka carlita) of for the benefit of all the broken hearts???? has supplanted my other faves??? Which is tricky because she is more or less an OC, so I don't know if that counts.

Honestly, even though it's been ages, it might still be Lucretia, if only because I am fairly evenly split in my enjoyment of writing both Ed POV and Stede POV.

I don't think? reader reactions comes into it much, except maybe specifically your obsession with Carlita lol.

You’ve posted a fic anonymously. How would someone be able to guess that you’d written it?

THIS IS A FASCINATING QUESTION THAT I HAVE ACTUALLY THOUGHT ABOUT. (I'm not digging it up now but I wrote a long rumination about that in re that collaborative Choose Your Own Adventure project, and trying to recognize writers I know.) Here's what I would say is particular to my unbetaed work: punctuation pokemon (gotta catch em all!), excessive parentheticals, "and then", and "is verbing". (I cautiously tag @gaypiratebrainrot who is by now exceedingly familiar with all my writing tics)

Thematically? idk. I'm pretty sure it's there, but I often don't notice those things until someone else points them out.

These three were requests about for the benefit of all the broken hearts specifically:

What scene in [Fanfic Name] took the longest to write? What was difficult about it?

I don't know about the longest, but I'm pretty sure this most recent chapter (13) took the most drafts and the most reworking and rethinking.

There's so much going on, and all of the characters are finally "on deck" as it were, which means there's both a ton of conflicting emotions and motivations to keep track of AND "I am bedeviled by the matter of the pronouns" AND there's important action that takes place entirely off-page, and deliberately so, which meant I was resisting the need to write what that was because it was going to be throwaway writing, but it turns out I had to in order to make it work. The bit where Mary and Ed first meet backstage I probably ended up with four drafts altogether, including once where I threw out a huge chunk and just rewrote from scratch.

(oh plus I had a real life experience that necessitated a handful of little setting tweaks)

All of which is fair, because it's a big turning point and needs to be both surprising AND make sense in context. Which means I also had to go back to earlier points in the story and adjust in order to get some sense of foreshadowing, or at least plausibility. So thank you for pitching me on the idea for what turned out to the most difficult thing I've ever written in my entire goddamn life, I guess.

Did you have any ideas that didn’t make the final cut of [Fanfic Name]?

I had this idea for something where Mary and Carlita would be painting together, maybe in the style of Jackson Pollack? (this may have been based on one of your pitches) And I can see it in my mind's eye but it just didn't work in context at all!

Do you have a favorite scene you’ve written from [Fanfic Name] story/chapter?

I have two favorites, and one of them is the painting scene that I did write. I love the tension and the physicality of it. The other is in chapter 17, so a few chapters from now (YOU know the one), and I'm not going to spoil it but I like it a LOT.

7. If you use song lyrics, which artist’s songs did you pull from the most?

It's looking very eclectic rn, Rooster. Idk if there is a most pulled from artist, but I use lyrics for every single chapter title and most fic titles because I simply cannot name things. It's an impossible task for me and I hate it.

Oh, honestly, like every pairing. Twenny is my second fave after Creek rn so for sure some Twenny and I have two Creekenny fics in the works I'm excited about. But I want to write every ship I have any thoughts on whatsoever. It takes time because I spend a while thinking about new characters/dynamics before writing them.

Probably overly self-conscious/who cares, but I never want people to think the way I write a ship at a given time is how I see them in any fixed capacity. It's just what I'm interested in exploring at that moment with two fake guys. Fanfic is fun because you can explore so many different things with your fiction dolls

I would love a director's cut on any of your Liam and Gabriel stories! Maybe you could pick your favorite one to talk about?

Oh man I've said a lot about MC over the years, not that I mind blabbing about it, more I just dont want to be repeating myself xD

But here's a few things I may or may not have said about it

It was only meant to be a one shot (hahahaha 32 chapters later)

The initial oneshot which was the first chapter was inspired by an orb I read on the blue hellsite

Gabriel’s first and last name comes from the Infer/nal Dev/ices series as I was reading it at the time.

Originally I planned on ending it after the part where Liam finds out Gabriel is still in love with Michael and calls Bryce, tho I'd already written the part where Liam and G meet Michael back in Newhaven.

I wrote almost all of it out of order with the part where Liam accidentally calls Gabriel cute, him finding out about Michael and them meeting Michael and the part where Gabriel tells Liam he loves him all within a few days of deciding it would be more than just a one shot

Liam and Gabriel playing "Spot the band" is still one of my fave things I did.

All the chapters titles aside from two are either song titles or song lyrics and all have meaning to that particular chapter.

Liam’s internal "because I love you" at the end of the chapter where Gabriel is in the hospital was add at the absolute last minute. I think I'd had it ready to post to the forum and then after my reread was like...yeah lets add this.

I really never met it to be 32 chapters and over 80k words

Liam and Gabriel playing Scrabble is one of my fave scenes and was Juto's idea because I told her I wasn't sure what they should do at Gabriel's beside watch a movie.

I started writing the sequel Fairytale of Newhaven before I finished writing MC.

Liam’s saying his dad died when he was 7 was originally just a throw away line because I wanted G to ask after he went into his long rant over his father. I didn't even have it as a plot point in FoN when I started writing it and then boom it took over.

Hell yeah!

Alright a small disclaimer though: In my experience, all of Cix's songs are growers. If you aren't feeling it initially, you will totally vibe after the next few listens.

Also, some of their songs are very heavy in the sense that the content can be rough, and perhaps a little angsty but I mean... Their meanings are pretty solid at least.

Let me start with their title tracks since, most of those are bangers ngl.

These aren't recommendations per se but I'll give you a sloppy description and you can probably gauge what might be worth listening to.

[the red and blue ones are the main ones that I'm technically recommending or they're my faves.]

Movie Star - It's sultry and kinda groovy; reminds me of lucid dream by aespa and some of vixx/sf9 songs. (one of my favorites for sure).

Jungle - straight banger, pretty moody though, somewhat slow bpm and is 100% a grower. the more I listened, the more things I noticed within the song that just accentuates the overall song.

Numb - the break at the chorus is pretty solid, not my first recommendation but can definitely be enjoyable if you like a mix of noisy sounds and what I'd describe as 'sleek' sounds lol.

My New World - This is their Japanese release and ... I'm starting to realize their overall sound tends to be smooth and steady... powerful sounds that make you feel like a main character that's trying to overcome some great evil. So that's the main essence of this song lmao.

Wave - pretty feel good, relaxed. Reminds me of the view by stray kids.

Off my mind - has as rich rythmic instrumental, pretty sultry/groovy sound. Nothing stand out but a solid song. The chorus has an engaging beginning.

Pinky Swear - Another Japanese release that is very wholesome and just feels like someone is telling you things will be alright.

Save me, Kill me - It makes me oddly nostalgic. It has this bittersweet sound to it. It's basically a tragic song but you can do a dramatic contemporary dance to it that would slay-

Bad Dream - I really like this one so much but again, it has that main character fighting their inner demons or something. It has the coolest break though. It's so like, 2010's club sound in a good way.

458 - banger, pretty moody as well, but gosh the chorus just GOES HARD ngl.

Tesseract - The ultimate movie song lmao. Picture someone walking in this vast desert-like terrain with a sword in hand, and then they plunge it into the ground causing shockwaves into the ground, absolutely annihilating the enemy in style. That's all I'll say.

Cinema - I really was underwhelmed with this initially but then I found myself humming the chorus. It has a light feeling to it. A simple song you can play in the background and it makes your chest less tight.

Okay, I think those are the title tracks.

Overall I'd recommend their album "'OK' Prologue : Be OK" just because it's a pretty solid glimpse into their discography OR their EP "HELLO Chapter 1: Hello, Stranger" jeez their names....

Then there are some that I find myself liking:

What you wanted - has some cool melodies. again, has a mix of sleek and noisy sounds. The chorus is sleek and the verses are what's noisy. Reminds me of Exo.

Like It That Way - Those chilled tropical vibes that were really popular a while back.

Move My Body - IT BANGS IDK WHAT ELSE TO PUT. It's the type of song that feels like a guilty pleasure. Like you play it at 3am and dance in your room but you won't outright play it for just anyone.

Black Out - Solid noisy goodness (It gives NCT 127 vibes)

Round 2 - It reminds me of Dean's music. Idk if it classifies as rnb but definitely has that laid-back vibe.

On the topic of A/Ns that kill the mood (for some, haha):

I'm not a fan of PSAs in author's notes either, but I do always enjoy a nice research infodump in the bottom A/N.

One of my favorite fic authors creates these very in-depth AUs and their notes are usually a delightful mix of "this is how the climate would have changed after that mountain got cut in half", "the cultural significance of embroidery in ancient Rome", and "here is more info on figging".

Authors, I will read any supplementary material to your fic you allow me. I'll even listen to the song you chose for the title, even if "it has nothing to do with the story but I was listening to it just now xD".

Ah, I don't know, this discussion just reminded me of why I like the freeform nature of A/Ns so much. And the medium of fanfic in general. I actually have a character playlist called Scrolling Through Blorbo's AO3 Tag that is just songs people named chapters after etc. and it makes me think about my fave as much as it makes me remember how much I enjoyed those stories.

I love that shit. Give me your bibliography! I want all the footnotes!

Anyway because @sarah-yyy has been reading it and I’ve gotten a lot of asks/replies on this, I’m just going to do one huge list for one of my faves so everyone knows what’s going on and where to find things XD

- Part of Min’s ‘Why You Should Read’ Series -

Summary:

This is set in a historical setting where men can marry other men, but it’s usually reserved for sons who were not borne by the official main first wife of the patriarch of the family, i.e. a son born by a concubine in a family may be forced to marry a man to keep him from being able to become the next family’s patriarch for example. This is because any family’s next leader needs to be able to have children with a wife who married in as a zheng shi (lawful wife), and not a ce shi (second wife) or any other concubines/mistresses etc. Most of these men who marry other men have to take them as their zheng shi and lawful spouse in a sense, and the same goes for the royal family.

The story starts with third prince Jing Shao, who was forced to marry Mu Han Zhang, a Marquis’ second son, by the Empress and Emperor, thereby officially and effectively cutting him out of the race for the throne. He’s mocked by the public as everyone knows what this means, and for the next 10 years, he neglects Mu Han Zhang, blaming him for his predicament, and deliberately showers his three other concubines with affection in front of him, but 10 years later, when Jing Shao is accused of treason, everyone leaves him except for Mu Han Zhang. They are chased to the edge of the cliff by soldiers, and Mu Han Zhang dies in his arms having taken an arrow meant for him earlier, and Jing Shao jumps off the cliff with his dead body, and promises that if there’s a next life, he will do everything Han Zhang says, and love him.

He wakes up immediately on the night of his marriage with Han Zhang, and realizes that he’s been given a second chance to make everything right. Han Zhang is definitely afraid of him, humiliated and angry when he first wakes up after how rough Jing Shao was with him earlier on their wedding night, and he has no memories of their past life. Jing Shao then sets to SHOWER HAN ZHANG with affection, love and basically everything, because he realized that this is the only person who stayed by his side until the end, and then he falls in love with Han Zhang properly this time, and also deals with every single person who maligned and schemed against him in his previous life, with Han Zhang by his side.

Characters:

1. 景韶 Jing Shao - 3rd Prince and is the first out of his three other brothers to be given a title 成王 (cheng wang). He’s referred to as 王爷, and also 小勺 (xiao shao) by Han Zhang. Went out on his first war when he was 14, and was thus given a title before any of his brothers. He’s known for being a merciless, cold and fierce army general/commander, but this was before his second life with Han Zhang, where he puts on like his doting mode and is basically a dumbass XD who listens to Han Zhang with a lot of trust, which is cool and all.

He marries Han Zhang when he’s 19, and in his first life he was very reluctant and resistant, and neglected Han Zhang for 10 years, until he was charged with treason and hunted down.

In his first life he wanted to snatch the throne, even from his blood-related brother Jing Chen, but more out of spite than anything else because he felt he was dealt an unfair hand by having to marry Han Zhang. Not only that, but Jing Shao is not his father’s favourite son, and he always felt that the emperor was biased against him. Anyway, a huge accumulation of daddy and anger issues, which is fair.

When he realizes that Han Zhang died for him, he decides he will be good to Han Zhang if they are reborn in their next life.

2. 慕含章 Mu Han Zhang - The 2nd son of Marquis Bei Hou’s, born to a concubine. He’s called by his 表字 which is 君清 (jun qing) by Jing Shao. Official First Wife Bei Wei Hou-furen and her son (who is in line to inherit the Marquis title from his father) has bullied him all his life, and wanted to push him into greater desperation by marrying him to Jing Shao, knowing he will suffer at the hands of the supposed merciless/heartless wangye. He has a weak body because of an accident when he was younger, and in his first life he was really sick after being neglected for 10 years, and knowing this in their second life, Jing Shao does everything he can to take care of him.

He is incredibly smart, has a brain for business and sales, and is also very good at handling people, especially scheming ones. He aids Jing Shao in the beginning of their second life, and then Jing Chen later as well, as both brothers begin to fight to put Jing Chen on the throne, against the 1st and 4th Princes. Is an incredibly good tactician in war as well.

3. 景琛 Jing Chen - 2nd Prince, Jing Shao’s blood related older brother who is handsome af too. His title, given later in the novel, is 睿王 (rui wang). He was misunderstood by Jing Shao in the first life as Jing Shao thought it was his brother who led to him marrying Han Zhang, and because he’s not very good at expressing himself and shows his concern to Jing Shao by nagging at him, Jing Shao always thought he hated him. In their second life, Jing Shao already knows that Jing Chen loves him and did a lot for him in his first life, and so trusts his brother and supports him right off the bat, because Jing Chen is indeed the most suited person for the throne.

He has a wife and a concubine, 3 sons and 2 daughters at this point. He ends up helping Jing Shao a lot, and when he realizes that Han Zhang is way more adept at politics and the whole scheming thing than Jing Shao is, he begins trusting Han Zhang a lot more as well! There’s a surprise with Jing Chen hahaha which I loveee and could see, but wasn’t sure until they confirmed it in the last few chapters AHAHAHAHA.

Other Notable Characters:

1. Song Ling Xin (Second Wife) on the left, and two other concubines on the right

They’re pretty much vying for Jing Shao’s attention, but at this point apparently he hasn’t slept with any of them before. Song Ling Xin is the daughter of the Military Department’s Head Song An, and Jing Shao married her initially out of interest. The right most concubine (I forgot her name oops) was a gift given to him by his oldest brother, the 1st Prince. The two of them played a huge role in Jing Shao’s downfall back in his first life, and so in his second life, he especially detests Song Ling Xin. Plus the three of them keep bullying Han Zhang in the beginning, but thankfully Jing Shao is like: “Anything my Jun Qing wants”. They don’t stay around for long either, watch as Jing Shao gets rid of them like he’s swatting flies.

2. Xiao Yuan & Zhou Da-Ge

This is another male couple who’s been married for 7-8 years if I recall. Xiao Yuan is one of Jing Shao’s important allies and friends in the second life, because in Jing Shao’s first life, this was one of the only young officials in court who spoke up for him when the accusations of treason came about. Zhou Da-Ge is his husband, who is a cook running a restaurant in the city. Whenever Zhou Da-Ge bullies Xiao Yuan in bed a little too much, Xiao Yuan punishes him by making him wear colourful clothes out (pink, bright yellow, purple, etc.) and thus he has a reputation for being eccentric and a weirdo, but oh well, all for love.

3. Gu Huai Qing

One of Jing Shao and Jing Chen’s most powerful allies, and he becomes blood-sworn brothers with Jing Shao without realizing who he is. Later he takes a liking to Jing Chen.

(Will update with photos when they come out, but they’re a bit further into the story so we won’t have them for a few months yet ahahaha)

Amazing Scenes:

Other Things I Like in the Novel:

Jing Shao is like, he does a 180 entirely and he is very cognisant of all his faults and what he did wrong previously, and how badly he treated Han Zhang, so he legit forces his brain to go “I will listen to Jun Qing from now on” and he really sticks to it!

Loves kissing and teasing Han Zhang, but doesn’t force him into bed after their wedding night, and instead goes to Xiao Yuan and asks for tips on how to make his partner feel less scared about sex

The both of them end up with a pet tiger?!! That’s called Xiao Huang (little yellow) LMAO

They nap together a lot which I love <3333

Jing Shao knows he’s bullied at home, so when they go back to the Marquis Bei Hou manor, he holds Han Zhang’s hand in front of everyone to let them know Han Zhang has someone to back him up

Brings Han Zhang to war because he “cannot concentrate if Jun Qing isn’t with me at all times” - and asks for special permission to do so

Han Zhang notes that since he married Jing Shao, as the ‘wife’ he is supposed to serve Jing Shao, but it’s always Jing Shao serving him - Getting water for him, bringing him to baths, putting clothes on for him, putting food in his plate if it tastes nice, massaging his back and waist etc. - and best is he doesn’t have to deal with any in-laws?!! HAHAHA

Jing Shao gets revenge on those who hurt Han Zhang when he was younger for him, and the outcome is pretty hilarious but well-deserved
