“Where are we going?”

"Well, I had a thought," Jackson smiled. "With you being a bit sick the last little while I thought maybe it might be nice to get you out of the house and into the outdoors. So I've got a truck outside, and in the back there's a cooler filled with all the stuff you've been craving. Next to that is a couple of good air mattresses and a stack of blankets. We're going to drive up to the Falls, park near the top and sit in the back of the truck for a few hours." He pressed a kiss to Hayley's temple. "You can get some fresh air, and when you've had enough we can just drive right back into town. If you're good I might even bring my guitar," he teased gently.

“Don’t let them push you around.”

"That's a nice thought," Kayleigh sighed. "But there's not really anything I can do about it, you know? I was going to be stuck in the family business forever if I didn't run away, and I can't exactly stand up to them. With the Guerrera's gone they've got way, way too much power to say no to. It's just safer for me to stay right here in Mystic Falls and hope they don't come looking."

"You just look a little pale, Mom, that's all. And before you tell me that you're a vampire, I know. But you look pale even for a vampire. So I think maybe you should come and sit down, and I'll make you some tea. And some food. And get you a pillow. And see if there's any magic I can do that might make you more comfortable." Hope was spiralling a little and she knew it, but she didn't know how to stop herself. "I'll get two pillows. I bet you could use two pillows. And a blanket. I'll be right back, I think I should go to the store and get you brand new pillows, they're safer for the baby and everything I'll be right back, I swear..."

“Pickles are gross.”

"So the pickle craving isn't a thing anymore. Got it," Jackson fumbled with his phone, erasing pickles from the list of things to grab at the grocery store. "No pickles." Leaning over, he kissed Hayley on the cheek with a smile. "I know it's a little bit frustrating, Hales, but the babies want what they want and it's my job to make sure you have it for them. And if that means shopping a dozen times to get new things when you're craving them, I'm good with that. Now you just relax, I'll go get everything on your list and I'll be right back."

"I sure was - not even going to try to deny it. Something about you in one of my flannels, you know? We really do have to get a move on finding our own place because I just want to see you in that all day." Jackson leaned back in his chair, admiring. "And then out of it, too." And that definitely wasn't an option while they were living in the Mikaelson manor, with Hope liable to walk through the room at any given time.

Jackson took Hayley's hand in his, bringing it to his lips and kissing the ring he'd put there some time ago. "So did I. At peace or here, human, hybrid, or wolf, in this giant manor or our own little spot in the woods, Hayley, I'm yours. You and Hope are my world, and there's nothing that's ever going to change that." Gently, he pulled her into his lap and held her against him. "I'm not going to lie and say that this whole no magic thing isn't right up there in the list of craziest things that ever happened to me, but at the end of the day you and Hope are healthy and happy and safe. I can't ask for more than that. Not ever. I love you."

Jackson's smile was bright as he pulled Hayley closer. "You're very right about that - I'll be there every step of the way. And since you're fuzzy on the future, let me tell you what it holds." He planted a soft kiss on her temple before going on.

"The future is going to be you and me, in our own little place near wherever Hope decides to go to college. You're going to be unbound, free, and our place is gonna sit on a few acres where we can run anytime we want. Hope's going to take classes but only part time, because in the rest of her time your family's going to teach her more about magic - and about being a vampire, because someday that's going to happen for her too and she deserves to know all there is to know before that."

He smiled, drawing a breath as he spun out their story. "We're going to meet her boyfriends or girlfriends. We'll give her a hard time, pretend like we're going to interrogate them - but it'll all be for show. She's going to find someone she likes who'll break her heart, and we'll be there to buy her ice cream. She'll find another who really loves her, and we'll be there to support her.

She'll know she's free to come by anytime, but we're going to have our own lives too. Figure out what we want out of it when we're not in constant danger and Hope isn't in danger every minute of the day. Maybe do somethin' crazy like find a hobby. On Sundays, I'll make you breakfast in bed. And we're going to be happy. Happier than either of us has ever known. That's our future."

"That's all I've ever wanted to do. Because when you're happy, you shine like nobody else I've ever met. And you haven't had nearly enough time to be happy in your life. So this is my promise to you, alright? To make this life better. To make sure you have everything you want, and all that you need. To be sure you start and end every day with a smile on your face." Jackson had been waiting for the perfect moment, and he slipped the ring box from his back pocket as he got down on a knee in front of her. "To be a better man for you. And not to complain when Hope wants to be in your bed every night." Opening the box, he offered it to her. "All of that and more, I promise you."

"Well, I can lie to you. You're just probably going to know I'm lying." Being cute had never been a good way out from Hayley's glare, though, and Hope's smile withered a moment later. "Fine, I'm not feeling well. It's nothing that some soup won't cure, though," she offered, doubling down on lies to see if she could at least slip one past her mother.

“I don’t suppose you need rescuing, beautiful lady?” Jackson wrapped an arm around Hayley’s shoulders as he came up beside her at the bar.  “Or, if you don’t need rescuing, I can at least offer you a drink.”

It had taken him the first part of the night to figure out what the overwhelming emotion he was experiencing had been, but it hit him eventually - contentment.  When they’d first been pulled from peace he’d almost expected their second chance to feel hollow, or less than, but instead it was something vital, something precious.  And while Hayley’s hand was still adorned with the daylight ring Hope had made her, that was one small bump in the road that they’d fix one way or another.  He had a second chance to be her husband, to be a part of Hope’s life, and even something as silly as an eighties-themed party was a chance to just live.

“Doing okay, babe?  Sorry I ducked out for a few minutes there, but there might have been some beer involved.  I’m back now, and yours for the rest of the night.”

Hope had stayed camped in her bedroom since waking up early, trying to discern just what had happened the night before.  There was no way that her memories were right, but something had clearly changed matters in a big way given that the black veins on the back of her neck had vanished.  On top of that, everything she’d tried to do all morning, from magic to turning, had failed with a complete lack of any result.  It was like all that made her supernatural had been stripped away with the Hollow.  And while that scared her, it seemed a good compromise when the other option was that presence inside of her.

Hearing Hayley’s voice, she leaned out into the hall and waved her mother down.  “Mom?  Can you come in here, please?  Quietly, because I really don’t want dad hearing this conversation...”

If there was a sight better than Hayley’s predatory smile, Jackson was sure it only existed in stories.  Even as she pressed him down into the bed and he began to anticipate what was coming next, she was up and gone.  It took him a moment to understand and react, a worried frown on his face as he rolled off the bed.  Klaus was already ill, or so the scuttlebutt said, and the last thing he wanted was for Hayley to catch anything in their more vulnerable state.  He shrugged his shirt on, approaching the bathroom door and knocking softly.  “You okay, Hayley?”
