“I don’t suppose you need rescuing, beautiful lady?” Jackson wrapped an arm around Hayley’s shoulders as he came up beside her at the bar.  “Or, if you don’t need rescuing, I can at least offer you a drink.”

It had taken him the first part of the night to figure out what the overwhelming emotion he was experiencing had been, but it hit him eventually - contentment.  When they’d first been pulled from peace he’d almost expected their second chance to feel hollow, or less than, but instead it was something vital, something precious.  And while Hayley’s hand was still adorned with the daylight ring Hope had made her, that was one small bump in the road that they’d fix one way or another.  He had a second chance to be her husband, to be a part of Hope’s life, and even something as silly as an eighties-themed party was a chance to just live.

“Doing okay, babe?  Sorry I ducked out for a few minutes there, but there might have been some beer involved.  I’m back now, and yours for the rest of the night.”

Hope had stayed camped in her bedroom since waking up early, trying to discern just what had happened the night before.  There was no way that her memories were right, but something had clearly changed matters in a big way given that the black veins on the back of her neck had vanished.  On top of that, everything she’d tried to do all morning, from magic to turning, had failed with a complete lack of any result.  It was like all that made her supernatural had been stripped away with the Hollow.  And while that scared her, it seemed a good compromise when the other option was that presence inside of her.

Hearing Hayley’s voice, she leaned out into the hall and waved her mother down.  “Mom?  Can you come in here, please?  Quietly, because I really don’t want dad hearing this conversation...”

Kayleigh studied the other woman's face, nerves jangling. Hayley was entirely too smart, and her usual cover story apparently hadn't been quite enough to fool her. Leaning closer, she looked around and lowered her voice to a whisper. "I'm in...let's call it witness protection. There's people who'd like to know where I am who I'd rather not find out - it's better for my health if they don't know." Kay looked into Hayley's eyes. "And I'm only telling you that much because I don't think you're the type to give me up."

If there was a sight better than Hayley’s predatory smile, Jackson was sure it only existed in stories.  Even as she pressed him down into the bed and he began to anticipate what was coming next, she was up and gone.  It took him a moment to understand and react, a worried frown on his face as he rolled off the bed.  Klaus was already ill, or so the scuttlebutt said, and the last thing he wanted was for Hayley to catch anything in their more vulnerable state.  He shrugged his shirt on, approaching the bathroom door and knocking softly.  “You okay, Hayley?”

Hope stared into the little campfire in the manor’s backyard, curled up under a blanket and resting carefully against her mother’s side.  Normally she’d have been seated practically in her lap, but Hayley’s bump and an abundance of caution had her changing position for both their sakes.  “How long did it take you to get used to the enhanced senses?”  Everything was brighter, louder, more present since her transition, and it was distracting.

Leaving that thought aside, though, she changed the subject away from herself and to the sibling she’d have before she knew it.  “What’d the doctor say when you and Jackson saw him the other day?  Everything still okay?  No harm done in the middle of all the monster fighting?”  If anything had happened while she was in limbo she was never going to forgive herself for not getting back sooner.

“they’re such an idiot. my idiot but still.”

Hope giggled softly from her position on the end of her bed. The drink she'd brought in with her was forgotten in her hand, captivated as she was by the tales of the adventures of her mother and Jackson, and how he'd managed to walk facefirst into a sliding glass door at the store that hadn't opened quickly enough. "It sounds like it was at least fifty percent the door's fault," she offered in his defense, but keeping a straight face proved impossible.

"I like seeing you together, mom. He makes you smile, even when he's not walking headlong into doors. And you deserve that. You both do."

"If I ever answer no to that question, you can assume that I've gone suddenly blind," Jackson grinned. He was propped up in bed, where he'd been waiting as Hayley went down the hall to look in on Hope as she slept. Without enhanced senses or any other method of doing so, it was like the old days back in their place across from the Mikaelsons when she'd get up in the middle of the night to stare into the girl's crib. Now that she was back, though, and changing out of her clothes, he could hardly deny that he was watching with great interest.

"It is ridiculous how beautiful you are, you know that? Like the universe really outdid itself when it came to you."

This is temporary.  Let me make that clear first of all.  I’m going to fix what Greta’s witch bitches did to you, no matter what.  No matter what it costs or who I have to kill, I will take back what they took from you and make you whole again the way that you deserve.

But this is my gift to you for the moment.  Your daylight ring - white gold with green stone and a fleur-de-lis on each side to remind you of home.  I hope that you like it, but don’t get too attached  - I don’t plan on you needing it for very long.  And when I’m finished making things right we’ll smash it together.

“Where are we going?”

"Well, I had a thought," Jackson smiled. "With you being a bit sick the last little while I thought maybe it might be nice to get you out of the house and into the outdoors. So I've got a truck outside, and in the back there's a cooler filled with all the stuff you've been craving. Next to that is a couple of good air mattresses and a stack of blankets. We're going to drive up to the Falls, park near the top and sit in the back of the truck for a few hours." He pressed a kiss to Hayley's temple. "You can get some fresh air, and when you've had enough we can just drive right back into town. If you're good I might even bring my guitar," he teased gently.

“Don’t let them push you around.”

"That's a nice thought," Kayleigh sighed. "But there's not really anything I can do about it, you know? I was going to be stuck in the family business forever if I didn't run away, and I can't exactly stand up to them. With the Guerrera's gone they've got way, way too much power to say no to. It's just safer for me to stay right here in Mystic Falls and hope they don't come looking."

“Pickles are gross.”

"So the pickle craving isn't a thing anymore. Got it," Jackson fumbled with his phone, erasing pickles from the list of things to grab at the grocery store. "No pickles." Leaning over, he kissed Hayley on the cheek with a smile. "I know it's a little bit frustrating, Hales, but the babies want what they want and it's my job to make sure you have it for them. And if that means shopping a dozen times to get new things when you're craving them, I'm good with that. Now you just relax, I'll go get everything on your list and I'll be right back."

"You just look a little pale, Mom, that's all. And before you tell me that you're a vampire, I know. But you look pale even for a vampire. So I think maybe you should come and sit down, and I'll make you some tea. And some food. And get you a pillow. And see if there's any magic I can do that might make you more comfortable." Hope was spiralling a little and she knew it, but she didn't know how to stop herself. "I'll get two pillows. I bet you could use two pillows. And a blanket. I'll be right back, I think I should go to the store and get you brand new pillows, they're safer for the baby and everything I'll be right back, I swear..."
