As much as George joked about Abel getting old it seemed fitting for him to be laid up in bed right now. Moving her in had left him with a pulled muscle in his back that was painful enough to warrant prescription painkillers. Of course, Abel was never good at handling the side effects of these. “I’m sorry,” he slurred. He was at least glad Stella was not here to see him in this state.

The first chapter of Jessica Abel’s Out on the Wire talks about ideas. How you get ideas, what you do with ideas, how to refine ideas, and anything else you could want regarding your thoughts and what to do with them. The main point of both the podcast and chapter are focus sentences and the difference between a topic and a story. You have so many ideas buzzing around your head at any given moment that it’s hard to refine them without a system and Abel gives her readers that and even shows it in motion.
FOCUS SENTENCES
Adopted by Rob Rosenthal from Tod Maffin’s book, the focus sentence helps a storyteller see what’s missing in their story. It’s an organization method used by storytellers to keep their ideas in order. It carries the story by introducing a conflict, a motivation, and the character facing all of this. It follows a specific fill-in-the-blank format: Somebody does something because ____________ but ____________. Let’s take this statement apart the way Jessica Abel does in the book.
SOMEBODY DOES SOMETHING › This is the character who’s doing something. Who are they and what are they trying to accomplish? BECAUSE › This is the character's motivation for doing what they’re trying to do. BUT › What’s the character’s challenge? This is something that’s keeping them from easily overcoming their personal challenge.
TOPICS VS. STORIES
It’s easy to be so intrigued by your topic that you mistake it for the story. It might not be as interesting to everyone else, which is why you need to develop a story. If you need help differentiating between the two, Alex Blumberg has created an equation that Jessica relays in her book.
I’m doing a story about X and it’s interesting because Y.
This makes it so that you can easily find what’s interesting about your topic and how it comes together as a story.

Getting back out there had been more difficult for Abel than he wanted to admit. George was a change of pace for him in many, many ways. She wasn’t entirely his type, or well, what used to be his type. Corrupting the girl next door sorts was something he’d done in his youth. His ex was cute, exactly the kind of gal he’d wanted to settle down with and have kids. He’d never thought what would happen if that weren’t forever. So far things were going well with George. He was still getting the hang of the whole seeing someone other than his ex thing though. As he sat down at the table across from her he was taken aback by just how good she looked. “Stella and BB-8 send their love,” he said.

Abel felt a little odd when his ex took Stella on extended trips to her out of state family. Mostly because a good chunk of his life revolved around Stella and at one point he had went on these trips with them. Today was one of the days he usually had Stella. “Should we make the most of this week and do something special or am I just being weird?” he asked George. At least it was easier because they lived together now.
