David Jenkins: Well, there’s a thing I talk about a lot — I really, really liked the Bradley Cooper/Lady Gaga version of A Star Is Born. I like how the dynamic changes between them. (-)

In this case, we liked the idea that Blackbeard found this guy and made him a legitimate pirate, but now that he’s a star, Blackbeard’s questioning what he wants to do now that he’s lost his appetite for piracy. And Stede’s turned into Lady Gaga’s character. He’s famous now, because he killed the scariest pirate, so that power is inverted. It’s interesting to look at how a relationship changes now that Blackbeard isn’t the star anymore and Stede isn’t a hanger-on. Stede got what he wanted; he’s a real boy. Is Blackbeard jealous? Is he uncomfortable with it? When power dynamics shift in a relationship, that leads to trouble.

1. the last book I read:

The last book I finished (just yesterday) was The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley. It had been on my to-read and I saw it on the shelf at the library so I took it. I enjoyed it, I think it’s well written and the main character realistically flawed in an interesting way, but I don’t know that I would ever reread.

2. a book I recommend:

Depends on who I’m recommending to, but I did actually in real life recommend Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid to a friend and she read it (although she didn’t enjoy it as much as I did).

3. a book that I couldn’t put down:

I read quickly, so I either read books in one day or it takes me multiple days of reading a few chapters at a time, but I absolutely devoured The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon. Stay up past bedtime to finish reading levels of hooked, which is rare for me as an adult.

4. a book that I’ve read twice (or more):

I reread more in my childhood, but a series (that I read in childhood admittedly) that I’m intentionally re-reading now is the Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn trilogy by Tad Williams. Currently I’m on volume 3(.1), To Green Angel Tower, part 1 because the book is too long to publish in one mass market paperback volume. (The original form of the book I read was all one volume).

5. a book on my TBR:

I either own books because I love them, or because I want to read them, and The Final Strife by Saara El-Arifi is in the latter category. I originally got it from the library, didn’t finish it, put it on my christmas list and received it, and now it’s sitting on my shelf waiting for the stars to align and actually read it.

6. a book I’ve put down:

Last book I intentionally put down was The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang. Not because of the quality or anything, I’m just extremely uninterested in school stories right now.

7. a book on my wish list:

I am extremely looking forward to The Lotus Empire by Tasha Suri coming out later this year.

8. a favourite book from childhood:

Watership Down by Richard Adams is the book that I’ve read most in my life, to the point that my copy is falling apart.

9. a book you would give to a friend:

Is this either A) to lend or B) as a present, in which case A) no I hate lending my books to people. If it’s B) it supremely depends on the person and what they like reading. Hopefully I would give them something they want. I don’t like this question.

10. a book of poetry or lyrics you own:

I don’t really own short poetry, but I do have multiple Shakespeare plays and also national epic poems. So let’s call out The Kalevala by Elias Lönnrot (translated Keith Bosley) which is a beautiful work of poetry, even translated, and it touched me to my soul and I love it and it makes no goddamn sense.

11. a nonfiction book you own:

I have one history book that I have two copies of (by accident) but I’ve kept both because they’re actually slightly different! The Influence of Sea Power Upon History 1660-1783 by A.T. Mahan, but the second is a larger copy with more pictures that’s 1660-1805 for some reason!

12. what are you currently reading:

I have, in progress, The Unbroken by C.L. Clark, To Green Angel Tower, Part 1 by Tad Williams, and The Journey to the West, Volume 1 translated Anthony C. Yu.

13. what are you planning on reading next:

I just picked up from the library today Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, Volume 4 by Kanehito Yamada and The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo!

IF (2024) review

Seems like John Krasinski wanted to apologise to his kids after scarring them for life with A Quiet Place.

Plot: After discovering she can see everyone's imaginary friends, a girl embarks on a magical adventure to reconnect forgotten imaginary friends with their kids.

One must ponder the question WHAT IF John Krasinski decided to make a good movie? Okay, that’s harsh, but in all seriousness IF isn’t a great film. About 30 minutes into watching this, I realized it wasn't going to have the broad, universal appeal of many films in this genre. It's extremely sad in parts, and then shifts to total silliness, then back to sad again. Films can be a lot of things at different times, but it was sort of whiplash here going from silly to sad and back again. As such it begs the question who this movie is intended for? Naturally one would think children as it’s got goofy imaginary characters and a lot of slapstick and stupid jokes, but then there are genuinely depressing and hard-hitting moments where it seems to connect more with adults and their traumatic experiences. The film suffers a huge identity crisis that is its primary downfall.

Also IF is boring. The plot just sort of wanders and things happen that bear no purpose towards progressing the primary narrative. The characters are also poorly written without, dare I say, much imagination, with Cailey Fleming as the little girl protagonist being extremely monotone and lifeless, and for someone who’s supposed to be inspiring and helping these imaginary friends find a new home, she lacks any energy to motivate. I recall she was way more likeable and charismatic as Judith Grimes in The Walking Dead and it’s not like that show is known for great writing, especially in the later seasons, yet there she left much more of an impression than in this film. Ryan Reynolds is enjoying his cool uncle era, yet even he felt really restrained here. Like it is still Reynolds doing his shtick, but it was missing something which I can’t put my finger on. As for the imaginary friends themselves, there are lots of voice cameos featured throughout, but again not many of these creatures actually had that memorable of a personality. Steve Carell is trying his upmost best as the big purple fluff that’s walked out of Monsters Inc., but I was finding him irritating more than anything. Of the more amusing ones there was Richard Jenkins as an Art Teacher and he has the most delightful voice, Bradley Cooper as a glass of ice which I found more entertaining than I should have, and Sam Rockwell as a superhero dog deserves a movie of his own. And again why the hell is Awkwafina in this? She’s voiced characters in like a gazillion animations in the last decade but her voice is so grading.

Usually I would admit to not being the right target audience for a movie that’s billed as for children, however in this case I feel the movie doesn’t really fit for anyone per se. It does seem that John Krasinski works best when there’s less dialogue like with his spectacular horror A Quiet Place, yet here IF seems to miss the mark. I’m certain this is done with good intentions, and maybe I’m being overly cynical here, but IF does not paint a solid case for imaginary friends.

So this band was not originally made with The Sims, I created them after I’d started writing my book and needed visual aids to help me with my characters.

This is River Monster! A rock band that comprises of Jensen Reed (bottom middle) on lead guitar and lead vocals, his brother Jonah (top middle) on drums, his childhood best friend Kristian Spencer (bottom left) on guitar, T.J. Chambers (top left) on bass guitar and Bradley Jenkins (top right) on keyboard/piano. Also pictured on the bottom right is Jensen and Jonah’s sister Juliet Reed who becomes the band’s manager mainly to keep an eye on her younger brothers but also because their last manager was not a nice man.

So Jensen is the second born child but first born son to Martin Reed and Stephanie Hale. His parents split up when he was a child and both he and his siblings had a non existent relationship with their father after that. Jensen’s relationship with younger brother Jonah was strained growing up, he felt distant towards both him and Juliet. In his teens he turned to drugs and got expelled from high school but his mother Steph managed to talk the Principal into letting him finish, he only had three months left until graduation. Jensen started out his adult life as an actor, mainly to put food on the table for his mother and siblings. He found fame in a teen drama and the movie roles came in consistently after that. He formed the band with best friend Kris during the height of his fame but he tried very hard not to use it to get the band off the ground, they advertised for a bass player and keyboard player, T.J. answered first followed by the baby of the band, Bradley. It was Juliet that asked Jensen to give Jonah a place, like his older brother Jonah had struggled with drugs in his teens but unlike his older brother, he couldn’t turn his life around as easily. Jensen caved and did as Juliet asked, Jonah could play the drums and Jensen felt he couldn’t get into too much trouble in the back pounding the old skins. They rose to fame quite quickly and Jensen became the most wanted rock star around, putting his acting career on the back burner for a couple of years. They won several music awards, had several number one albums and toured frequently all under the management of Bryan Whitaker who turned a once confident and happy Jensen into a nervous wreck with an eating disorder and eventually developing an alcohol addiction. Bryan controlled everything Jensen did, and as the front man of the band, he seemed to be the one that had all the pressure piled onto him.

Without spoiling my book, suffice to say Jensen got rid of Bryan after a life changing incident and he went solo, asking his sister to quit her job in advertising and become his new manager. After enjoying a successful solo career, Jensen reformed the band, with much persuading from Juliet, and they made one last album before breaking up (amicably) for good. Juliet’s job change paid off as she not only managed a highly successful solo artist in her brother Jensen, but she also was in charge of the River Monster boys for their last album and tour.

Lauren Tom- Notable roles: Minh and Connie Souphanousinphone (King of the Hill), Numbuh 3 (Codename: Kids Next Door), Su (Mulan II) and Amy Wong (Futurama). She is also known for her live action roles in The Joy Luck Club, Supernatural, and Andi Mack.

Dee Bradley Baker- Notable roles: Numbuh 4 (Codename: Kids Next Door), Perry the Platypus (Phineas and Ferb), and Appa and Momo (Avatar: the Last Airbender). He is mostly known for his various creature and animal roles. He also plays several recurring side characters on Spongebob, such as Old Man Jenkins and Squilliam Fancyson.

Variety Announces 10 Actors to Watch for 2022

Variety has selected its 10 Actors to Watch for 2022, an honor that dates back to 1998.

Past honorees include many future Oscar winners and nominees including Mahershala Ali, Timothée Chalamet, Viola Davis, Adam Driver, Brie Larson and Lupita Nyong’o.

This year’s honorees will be feted in the Oct. 12 issue of Variety and at the Newport Beach Film Festival Honors, a brunch reception held on Oct. 16 that also celebrates some of the best and brightest in the entertainment world. The event will be held in conjunction with Visit Newport Beach and the Newport Beach Film Festival.

This year’s 10 Actors to Watch are:

Joseph Quinn – The British actor had a major breakout role as fan favorite Eddie Munson in Season 4 of “Stranger Things.” He also appeared in “Mangrove,” part of Steve McQueen’s “Small Axe.”

Kerry Condon – Known for her roles on “Better Call Saul” and “Ray Donovan,” Condon will next be seen opposite Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson in Martin McDonagh’s “The Banshees of Inisherin.”

Stephanie Hsu – After her breakthrough performance in “Everything Everywhere All at Once” opposite Michelle Yeoh, Hsu will appear in an upcoming film from Adele Lim and the series “American Born Chinese,” which reunites her with Yeoh.

Ximena Lamadrid – Seen as the titular character in the Netflix series “Who Killed Sara?,” Lamadrid plays a pivotal role in “Bardo” from filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu.

Christina Jackson – Following roles in “The Good Fight” and “Swagger,” Jackson stars opposite Jonathan Majors and Glen Powell in “Devotion” and has a role in the upcoming Shirley Chisholm biopic opposite Regina King.

Thuso Mbedu – After starring in Barry Jenkins’ series “The Underground Railroad,” Mbedu will make her feature film debut opposite Viola Davis in “The Woman King.”

Zen McGrath – The newcomer stars alongside Hugh Jackman and Anthony Hopkins as the title character in Florian Zeller’s film “The Son.”

Amber Midthunder – Midthunder earned critical and audience raves for her leading role in “Prey” and starred in the series “Roswell, New Mexico” and “Legion.”

Sam Nivola – Nivola will be seen this year as Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig’s son in Noah Baumbach’s “White Noise” and in 2023 opposite Bradley Cooper in “Maestro.”

Jeremy Pope – The Tony Award nominee earned an Emmy nomination for his TV debut in “Hollywood” and will make his first starring film role as a Black, gay Marine recruit in “The Inspection.”

With Tom Hiddleston reprising his beloved character, the six episodes of Marvel Studios’ “Loki,” which premiered on Disney+ in June 2021, were a massive success for the phase four entry. Disney and Marvel are hoping to have a similar success after the limited series “WandaVision” led the Emmy nomination field with 23. After initial plans to submit it in limited series, Variety has learned exclusively that “Loki” will seek Emmy love in the drama categories.

According to the Television Academy rules and regulations, the criteria to compete in limited series: “The program must tell a complete, non-recurring story, and not have an ongoing storyline or main characters in subsequent seasons.”

The Primetime Emmys have been actively trying to crack down on the designations of series, with some that return for subsequent seasons. This has been an ongoing issue, and the Television Academy has been making various tweaks and rule changes over the last decade to address it. After merging limited series and tv movies in 2011, the two entities were separated again in 2014 with the rising popularity of anthology series like “American Horror Story.”

In 2017, HBO’s “Big Little Lies” nearly swept the limited series categories, including three acting wins for Nicole Kidman, Alexander Skarsgård and Laura Dern. However, they announced a second season after its awards run, forcing the 2019 sophomore outing to compete in drama series. This is an ongoing issue the TV Academy has been trying to address but hasn’t cracked the code yet.

As the second season gears up for shooting, Disney and Marvel were left with no other choice but to proceed with either drama or comedy submissions, which echoed their decision with “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” last awards season. However, drama is the smarter choice for “Loki” due to the competitive nature of comedies this year that include the returns of FX’s “Atlanta,” HBO’s “Barry” and Amazon Prime Video’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.”

So is there room for Hiddleston and others on the drama side of the house?

All six episodes were helmed by Kate Herron, credited with constructing an impressive artisan team and building the audacious sets for the Time Variance Authority. While paying homage to science fiction classics like Ridley Scott’s “Blade Runner” (1982) and Terry Gillam’s “Brazil” (1985), she could be a strong contender for a nom, even if the series may face an uphill battle in the top category. Per Emmy rules for submitting for outstanding directing in a drama series, a director can only submit themselves for one episode solely, as opposed to limited series, if they helm every episode, the entire show acts as their representation (i.e., Scott Frank for “The Queen’s Gambit” and Barry Jenkins for “The Underground Railroad”). So the question becomes, what episode does Herron submit? Conventional wisdom points towards episode three (essentially “Before Sunset” on an alien planet) or episode five (that introduces the multiple Lokis).

The Creative Arts categories will have plenty to chew on from the series in categories like production design, cinematography and visual effects. Composer Natalie Holt’s aural work has also been a noteworthy highlight. She could be a specific highlight in the campaign for outstanding music composition for a series, especially since a woman has yet to win the category since its inception in 1966. She has one previous nom for PBS’ “Victoria” in 2017.

Aside from “Hawkeye” and “Moon Knight” competing in limited series, Marvel also has the anthology series “What If…?” that was created by A.C. Bradley. However, it will compete for outstanding animated program.

Created by Emmy winner Michael Waldron (outstanding animated program for “Rick and Morty”), the show follows the events of “Avengers: Endgame” (2019), where Loki steals the Tesseract and is now placed into an alternate reality. The series also stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Wunmi Mosaku, Eugene Cordero, Tara Strong, Owen Wilson, Sophia Di Martino, Sasha Lane, Jack Veal, DeObia Oparei, Richard E. Grant, and Jonathan Majors.

“Loki” is now streaming on Disney+.

The Mosley Review: Nightmare Alley

There are many films out there about confidence men and women and how they get away with it or get what's coming to them. They mostly focus on the thrill of the scheme and the action that ensues as they are chased out of town or across the country. Not many of them actually slow down and let you live with the con artist or invade their personal life as they destroy others. That's what I truly loved about this film and how the mystery is slowly and metaphorically revealed. The first half of the film is set in the perfect breeding ground of scams and I loved that we got to know each person in the carnival and how they operate. A peak behind the curtain if you will and what's behind that curtain is a cautionary tale filled with expert level foreshadowing. The characters all have a part to play in this film and I loved how each one effected the flow of the story. I would warn those that the first half may feel as if the story is going nowhere in particular but once the second half of the film begins, the wheel really starts to move into what the film really has to offer.

Bradley Cooper was excellent as the stoic and mysterious grifter Stanton Castle. I liked that he was always studying people and not so quick to jump into his trick. It made it more suspenseful to find out when or where he was about to begin. His reluctance to show all of his cards and weakness was refreshing since he fought hard to not fall into a version of his own con. Willem Dafoe was an outstanding introduction to the world of "The Angle" as Clement “Clem” Hoately. He was strong and morally dirty for the amount of screen time he had in the film. Toni Collete was excellent as Zeena Krumbein and I loved that right off the bat she was probably the smartest person in the camp. David Strathairn was great as her drunken husband Peter “Pete” Krumbein and he was the catalyst and warning to Stanton of how power can destroy lives. Rooney Mara was so sweet and innocent as Mary Elizabeth "Molly" Cahill. I loved the romance between her and Stanton and their chemistry kept you invested in the story. Cate Blanchett was perfection as the smooth, 1940's femme fatale Lilith Ritter. There are so many layers to her that were so much fun to unravel. I loved the game that is played between her and Stanton as the battle of who is the better con artist. She is so seductive and her mind games are very dangerous and I couldn't keep my eyes off of her. Richard Jenkins delivers another outstanding performance as Ezra Grindle. I loved that even the most powerful and wealthy men can be brought down emotionally and psychologically when the right strings are pulled. Between him and Stanton, you start to wonder who is the real villain of the story.

The score by Nathan Johnson was great and haunting in the more personal scenes. I loved that it illustrated the mysterious moments of the film and kept the dark neo noir tone consistent across the film. Visually the film is stunning and the use of shadows and certain color tones in the Lilith's office was brilliant. It helped to visually inform you of who could be the bad or good person in the room. How that line of light is balanced is masterful. The sound design is also really great in a particular scene involving a glass of alcohol. It is both inviting and a commentary on how destructive a simple sip of whiskey can be. Guillermo Del Toro is on my Mount Rushmore of great storytellers and this once again proves why. If you're looking for a film to sink your teeth into character wise, then look no further. Definitely check out this well crafted neo noir tale. How the visual image of the star can contribute to the actor/character resonance?

Earlier, in this post, we have talked about Jenkins’ idea of how fans, in the process of slashing, might read the body of characters (especially in media fandoms). We also talked about in this post I quoted Cathy Yue Wang on how Real People in RPF can appear as Derivations of the characters they resonate with. Taking these points farther, maybe it can be said that the viewer reads the characters into these bodies that appear on the screen. Martin discusses a fanvid where this happens on a dietetic level: the plot itself turns the bodies of the actors (shots from documentaries or behind-the-scenes footages) into the reincarnated or immortal version of the characters they play.

The final sequence of the vid, in which a shot of Arthur and Merlin looking out over Camelot fades to a shot of Bradley and Colin standing and looking out over Caerleon (from The Real Arthur and Merlin) sums up the layering of “Arthur and Merlin” and “Bradley and Colin”: a shot of two actors, standing where the “real” Arthur and Merlin reunited. Again, the inter-textual (sic!) relationship between various texts and sets of texts is a site of play for fans in exploiting their meaning-making potential. The effect is also one of mythologising James and Morgan: in saturating images of the actors with images of their mythic characters and their narratives; they become the bodies of stars as they are mythologised. This vid and ones like it demonstrate again that it is not alone the industry producers who undertake the project of mythologising. Fans engage in the same thing, though they may not call it that. RP fans are preoccupied with the resonances that produce the star.
