Reasons why you must watch Shao Nian Ge Xing donghua (Me trying to convince people)
Tumblr media
Its free. You can bingewatch it in Youku animation or Bilibili youtube channel with english subs. Its very accessible for international watchers.
Its ongoing and has already 3 related donghua. Aside from main story, you have the assassins' own spin-off and prequel about uncles' youth story.
Its a must watch if you like handsome characters, and bromance. Like I feel Xiao Se and Wuxin look gayer in the donghua. They have a scene in the donghua that was deleted. It just means it look too gay so they deleted it. I remember watching that scene but I can't find that particular scene anymore. I'm definitely not delusional because they still show that scene in the donghua opening visuals. Its very real and not figment of my imagination.
One of the good coming-of-age Wuxia donghua out there. The fighting scenes are so good. You can really feel that they are powerful characters. If they are a threat or a veteran, that's definitely the aura they gave you.
Did you know the drama adaption used the storyboard of the donghua for the earlier episodes and the donghua's theme song? Meaning the donghua is that good if the storyboard and theme song can be use again. It has great useable value and donghua has established good reputation.
Dark River in the donghua is so good in terms of character designs and compelling complex agenda. They have the coolest character introduction ever.
Xiao Se in the donghua is more sassy, has older friend vibe and has attitude problem. The drama tone it down, of course. His facepalm, the way he squint, his droopy eyes and the way he raise his eyebrows are very entertaining to watch.
They don't force the romance in your face. They slowly introduce Qianluo as Xiao Se's love interest and at the same time they show how the characters have great brotherhood with his friends. I think I ship the bickering dynamic of Qianluo and Xiao Se in the donghua but never in the drama.
The battle of the 3 Princes in donghua is like a cautious chess game. It don't feel like a fight between 3 siblings but more like a fight among 3 ambitious people who know their own goals. Their drama version is more straightforward. The emperor is still biased for Xiao Se so even if they are against Xiao Se, I can't help but sympathize with them.
They have strong female characters. Yes, they are the love interest but they have their own story to tell and can stand out on their own as characters. For example, Ye Ruoyi actually want Xiao Se to join the battle for the throne because she support him even if she's also Lei Wujie's love interest.
The 3D animation is quite decent. I actually watched this before so I can get used to 3D donghua as preparation for SVSSS donghua. As my first 3D donghua, this is definitely a good experience.
Its a good mix of court politics and jianghu politics. If you ask why jianghu play a big role in the story, the King of Langya(Xiao Se's uncle executed because of a crime accusation) is like a bridge to Jianghu and Palace. Since the emperor ordered to kill him, it heavily affected the jianghu because that's like their friend and you killed him so they obviously felt betrayed. Xueyue city is protective of Xiao Se because he's close with his uncle and he questioned the emperor's decision back then that resulted him being exiled and assassinated that destroyed his martial arts core.

Who are YOUR top blood of youth characters and ships??!!
(This is jianghushenanigans btw I can’t change the blog I send asks from)
oh hi!! I just want to clarify that I'm still pretty new to the series and most of the information I know is from the Donghua instead of the live action. On top of that, I've only seen Season 2 and 3 of the Donghua since Season 1 was wiped off Youku for some reason so I never got to see what happens in it. I have no idea what happens in season 1 of the Donghua and began watching the live action to find some answers... news flash, I am still really confused by a lot of stuff because it doesn't seem accurate to what was depicted in the flashbacks of the donghua and what happened in the first 10 episodes of the live action? Not entirely sure why though....
Anyways, I'm on episode 14 of the live action and only watched Season 2 and 3 of the Great Journey of Teenagers Donghua. On top of this, I am watching the Dark River donghua series and I just got caught up 2 days ago. I plan to watch the Brewmaster series but I want to catch up on what is going on in the live action first. It's hard juggling 2 timelines.
ANYWAYS, who are my favorite characters? I'll just go top 3 for now.
in third place, it's Lei Yunhe.
Tumblr media
He is just so damn hot idk??? like my god did they have to design him looking so damn cunty? He's just visually stunning but I don't know too much about his backstory. From what I understand, he's very sad because of his arm situation but I was almost 80% sure he had 2 hands until I watched the live action and saw he only had 1. Even his liveaction counterpart is beautiful... like what???? men???? anyways. I only like him visually, his personality and storyline I'll have to reread to understand what really happened.
in second place, it's Lei Wujie.
Tumblr media
He is my son, I birthed him myself. It's true. I did. jk jk jk. He's just so adorable and the typical main character archetype you usually see in donghuas... but he's very precious and I just want to protect him. I think out of everyone in the story, he has the most growth and I love to see him win. Gosh 2 Lei's in the top 3??? Am I a Leimen stan?
in first place, it's Su Muyu
Tumblr media
He is just so ugly, so strange, and so prickly??? but I love him. His character is very dynamic and unique, I love seeing someone with strong intentions but an even stronger belief battle out their differences in the essence of the story. He's an assassin but he's not ruthless or destructive, he just wants to get the job done and not hurt anyone that doesn't need to be hurt.
I just really like his character in general, even his pale sickly design... But I do not like how they wrote him in his spin off series, Dark River.
Tumblr media
THIS CHARACTER IS JUST NOT HIM, tf??? They turned him into a typical main character archetype all because they didn't want a morally gray main character running the show. He is not Su Muyu from Blood of Youths and I refuse to believe this is canon yet cause... WTF IS THIS SU MUYU??? Why did they do this to him? They gave him a cool wife though and I love her to bits but they could have left him morally gray and clinically depressed. Either way, I am watching to see if his personality will eventually shift into the Su Muyu we see in the present day or if they're going to keep him as this shining protagonist... this will change in the near future.
HONORABLE MENTION: Mu Yumo
Tumblr media
so the main reason why I like her is because in the Blood of Youth, she's wearing ethnic Miao clothing. Which I too am Miao so I thought she was a Miao woman but it turns out... it's just her outfit for the Donghua. In Dark River she also underwent the same changes that Su Muyu did and I am not sure how I feel about her in the Dark River series. She's funny for sure but I will have to keep watching to make a concrete decision about her.
overall, my favorite is, Hot guy, my son, and ugly but cool goth guy.
My Favorite ships are
in third it's Lei Wujie and Ye Ruoyi
Tumblr media
I think they have so much potential, I want Lei Wujie happy and I wouldn't mind a polycule with Xiao Se or Shikong in there either. They're an adorable pair and I hope they both get together.
in second it's Xiao Se's brother and his servant
Tumblr media
specifically the live action cause they just seem to understand and support each other without any fail. I don't remember his servant showing up in the Donghua but at least in the liveaction it seems Xiao gege is very much one to let him touch him freely and hold his hand. How cute is that?
In first place, it's Su Muyu and Bai Hehuai
Tumblr media
I know this isn't Blood of Youth but I'm gonna cheat and put this in here because I really like them together. I just wish they made Su Muyu closer to the version he is in the Blood of Youth storyline rather than this shining main character syndrome he has become. I don't know where she is in current story but I hope she doesn't die later on....
ALL IN ALL, I like a lot of ships besides these main 3. Lei Wujie x Xiao Se x Tang Lian x Shikong, x Ye Ruoyi x Fairy Rui x Wuxin... they'd all be a cute couple together or separate or anything really. I also like the idea of Lei Yunhe and Zhao Yuzhen in a way??? I can't imagine Lei Yunhe with Li Hongyi though cause I don't know how related they are and his brother/best friend is interested in her already. I like Li Hongyi with the pretty master who also lives in Xueyue city. Another weird couple is Mo Yi and Baili Dongjun cause he agrees to stay with him for 10 years.... and Su Muyu and Mu Yumo because she supports him and I can fuck with that.
Since I am new to the series though, these are subject to change. Thank you for asking... I probably got so many details wrong though.

Blood of Youth 少年歌行 tv drama thoughts (mostly focused on shipping lol 😂):
It should be illegal for a monk to be this pretty and this shippable. The cradle-Buddhist in me feels so guilty every time I ship him with Xiao Se. but there is also the deep appeal of breaking taboos 唉,罪过,罪过啊 🙈
Sikong Qianluo is very, very miscast. I ship the concept of her with Xiao Se (bodyguard/prince couple) but not this particular actress’ face.
Xiao Se is shippable with everyone, but the onscreen chemistry with Ye Ruoyi’s actress in the last few episodes is insane. She should have been cast as Sikong Qianluo.
That being said, that episode where Ye Ruoyi shows up with her army to support Sikong Qianluo suddenly opened my eyes to yet another wonderful potential pairing
But my actual crack ship for this drama is Li Hanyi x Yi Luoxia (the number one swordswoman and the number one beauty? SIGN ME UP 👩‍❤️‍💋‍👩)
Everyone in this show so shippable with everyone else ahhhhh
I love the anime aesthetics of this show
This is very much a 群像 ensemble drama and the supporting cast are really the highlight of the show for me. Xiao Se didn’t initially draw me in as a main character but he grew on me as we got more into his character arc
This is the 热血爽剧 uplifting shounen anime vibe I needed after the somber tone and torturously ambiguous ending of Mysterious Lotus Casebook 被莲花楼虐了一番还意难平😭

Hi it's your secret santa 👋I love that some of your fav dramas for this year are also mine "The Blood of Youth, A League of Nobleman, Mysterious Lotus Casebook." Do you have a particular fave character or dynamics in those dramas?
Hello!! Lol, looks like the mods did a good job of matching us (and also you have good taste 😉)
Here are some of my favorites:
The Blood of Youth
My favorite character in this show is Tang Lian! I also got unexpectedly attached to Xiao Chong (and I totally called him becoming emperor lol)
I also really love the like,, main gang (Xiao Se, Lei Wujie, Tang Lian, Sikong Qianluo, Ye Ruoyi) especially as a group (doesn't have to be the whole group)
I'm not super interested in any romances for this drama, canon or otherwise, and I'm also not as into Wuxin (altho I don't hate him or anything!)
A League of Nobleman
If I had to pick one character it'd be Zhang Ping. I really like Wang Mowen too tho
As far as dynamics between characters go, I'm definitely a huge polyshipper for this show lol... Like my ideal polycule here is Zhang Ping/Lan Jue/Wang Mowen with Gu Qingzhang as Lan Jue's ex, the Emperor as Zhang Ping's boyfriend, and Chen Chou either as Zhang Ping's queerplatonic partner or his boyfriend. (I viewed Zhang Ping and Chen Chou as super close but platonic when watching it originally, but I don't have super strong feelings about that.)
All of that said, you don't need to feel like you have to include the whole polycule in anything you make for me! Feel free to focus in on any part of it that you may ship or want to create for. (You also don't have to actually state that anyone is together, I'm good with Vibes.)
I just wanted to give you the context of my preferred dynamic! Maybe avoid like "one true soulmate" type talk for this particular show? But I'm a generally a multishipper who can enjoy all kinds of conflicting ships separately, so don't feel too pressured about this, I'm sure whatever you're inspired to make would be great!
Mysterious Lotus Casebook
Li Lianhua, Fang Duobing, and Di Feisheng. I am just very invested in whatever the hell the three of them have going on. Or any two of them, your pick! Platonic or romantic is fine, I'd take either... Also down for any of the three on their own
Alternatively, I thought the Li Lianhua & Yun Biqiu little side plot was interesting!

The Blood of Youth! (For the fandom game 💜)
Favorite Male Character - Tang Lian or Xiao Se
Favorite Female Character - Ye Ruoyi
Least Favorite Character - Prince Chi
Favorite Ship - oh, good question. I don't think I have one yet! I came out of it thinking I could ship most people multiple ways and that's what makes my fandom brain itch about it. That said, I wish we'd had more of the dynamic between Tang Lian and Rui.
Favorite Friendship - Xiao Se & Ye Ruoyi are everything to me
Favorite Quote - I cannot remember a single quote and I don't have any immediately jumping out from my notes. I do love all the comedic banter the best, and that's not particularly quotable without the full context of the slapstick elements/timing/etc.
Worst Character Death - Tang Lian. That one messed me up. I don't normally get that way about character deaths but the fact that I was looking forward to seeing where he'd go next on this finding himself arc and then he just DIED and also he was my favorite little guy...I was thinking about it for weeks.
This made me so happy you have no idea Moment - Xiao Se using the devil eye thing to get through to Wu Xin. Best payoff of an extremely good power I thought they'd forgot about. But also the number of times I went LEI WUJIEEEE he fills me with delight at all times
Saddest Moment - Again: Tang Lian. Also seeing the others' grief was wowow really something ouchie
Favorite Location: Xueyue City. I really missed it. Specifically their weird xianxia Pokémon gym is just an incredible setpiece. SO silly but also so fun.

My review of The Blood of Youth / 少年歌行
Tumblr media
So um... here's a review I wrote months ago and forgot about in my drafts haha 😅
The Blood of Youth is a wuxia story which follows a group of young fighters who are thrown together under unexpected circumstances. While they make their names in the martial arts world, there are also old scores to settle in the political world of the imperial court.
I honestly wasn't sure about this drama at first but it really grew on me. It's very much in the spirit of wuxia, and while it's not a perfect drama, there's so much to love!
A quick gloss of some of the main characters: Xiao Se is an innkeeper with a quick mind, a sharp tongue, and a mysterious past. Lei Wujie is an optimistic pugilist who has left home for the first time in search of a challenge. Wu Xin is a prodigy whom the whole martial arts world seems to be hunting for. Tang Lian, brooding and internally conflicted, is the eldest disciple of the legendary martial arts city of Xueyue City. Sikong Qianluo is the fearless and energetic daughter of Xueyue City's third master. Ye Ruoyi is the perceptive and clever daughter of an imperial general.
Okay so I totally shipped Xiao Se with Ye Ruoyi even though it was obvious from the beginning that they wouldn't end up together, but I couldn't help it and I have no regrets!!!
But honestly I feel like this is a drama where you can ship everyone with everyone. There's such a wonderful friendship between the main characters and I just loved seeing the core group together.
For me, the opening episodes of the drama were the weakest, and I'm so glad I kept watching. The story moves quite fast at first and you're introduced to a lot of characters in a short span of time. It almost felt a bit messy and random because I initially wasn't sure how important each character was and I hadn't developed any emotional attachments to anyone so early on. If you can't keep up with everyone, that's totally okay, and it definitely clears up.
I think the story really takes off once they reach Xueyue City, and it just gets better and better from there. Xueyue City puts into perspective how powerful each fighter is, which forces are aligned with which, and the significance of each character's past. This is also where imperial politics start to trickle in.
A lot of the recent wuxia dramas like to integrate imperial politics into wuxia stories but I feel like most of them end up becoming political stories where the characters can fight really well. That's fine and I like political dramas, but I often wish there were more wuxia dramas. But I think The Blood of Youth really gets it right. Even at points in the plot that focus on the political struggle, and even when they reach the capital, it very much feels like a wuxia story. Hidden martial experts lurk at every corner of the capital. The protagonists behave like wuxia heroes who hold onto their own values, dictated by xia and not realpolitik. If anything, the fight scenes get better as they enter the more political arcs.
So I have mixed feelings about the fight scenes. I feel like the choreography is quite strong but the CGI is a bit mid. And boy did they use a lot of CGI (since the drama takes a fantasy-like approach to martial arts). But I saw behind-the-scenes footage of the actors doing their stunts and I was impressed by how much of it they actually had to do themselves. I think the CGI made the stunts look faker than they actually were. I also got used to the fantasy-like fighting style and came to like it by the end.
This is primarily a fluffy and hopeful drama, although there's also a surprising amount of depth and angst. If wuxia is up your alley, I think you'll have fun watching this!

choose violence ask game: 12, 17, 23 for tboy please (ik it’s a small fandom so i chose the least violent ones 💕)
THE BLOOD OF YOUTH LETS GOOOOOO
12. the unpopular character that you actually like and why more people should like them
lmao. Tang Ze. He's unpopular because he's in two scenes and really does not need to be in it at all. Why should more people like him? They shouldn't. He's my two scene blorbo but he doesn't deserve it. Who even is this guy? Why am I obsessed with him?
17. there should be more of this type of fic/art
ANY. PLEASE. MY CROPS ARE DYING.
uhh more specifically I'd love to see more of the Youths when they were younger: Xiao Chuhe, Xiao Lingchen, Ye Ruoyi, Ji Xue in the captial, Tang Lian in the Tang Sect, Lei Wujie at the Lei Clan fort, Sikong Qianluo as the spoiled only child of the citymasters, etc
23. ship you've unwillingly come around to
oooh ok so when I was first watching the first few episodes I was very 😐 about Tang Lian and Rui, because I was getting major aroace vibes from TL and the way Rui flirted with him just made me a bit uncomfortable. But now I love them and I wish them a very happy Married with no further stress please and thankyou
(choose violence HERE 😈)

Hi did you watch season 1 of Blood of Youths donghua? If so can I ask
- why Baili is on a boat in the first place? In season 2 they often cut to clips of Baili Dongjun on a boat in the middle of the ocean and I wasn't sure why he was going out there.
-Also, is the dog Canon to the series or did they just add that in there for shits and giggles?
-Does the dog belong to Shikong Qianluo? I often saw Shikong saying, "go find your owner"
-Did Lei Wujie encounter Ye Ruoyi in season 1? The reason why I asked this is because they had this whole flashback of them in season 2 when they met in Tianqi that seemed really out of place and in the flashback, he was in clothes that exposed his chest so I assumed it was season 1 design.
Hi! I’ve only seen parts of season one, but I believe I can answer all of your questions (it’s on iQiyi, which I don’t have, but I was able to find some of it for free on YouTube a while back).
-Baili Dongjun is on the boat because he’s going to Mo Yi’s island to drink the soup of forgetting
-the dog is donghua-only, probably for marketing purposes or to appeal to a younger audience. There are numerous characters with animal companions that they didn’t have in the novel or live-action (I still find it hilarious that Mu Chunfeng has a llama in the donghua)
-I’m pretty sure Xiao Se is the owner of the dog, but it has attached itself to Sikong Qianluo
-that flashback is Lei Wujie’s hallucination. He’s imagining doing the stuff he’s done with Xiao Se with Ye Ruoyi 😸

i just binge watched the blood of youth over like five days. this is literally the first cdrama i've finished since...sleuth of the ming dynasty?? i think?? i never finish cdramas. i came super close with a few of the dmbj dramas but the damn long list of episodes usually does me in. i just can't concentrate on one show for that long.
so, the blood of youth was really just that good! also it had a good ending that didn't end in tragedy (i shall not point fingers but...i do read the endings to many dramas bc i am not investing 30+ episodes of my time only for the ending to absolutely gut me unexpectedly).
the pacing was definitely a little rocky at points, the romance meant absolutely nothing to me (except for two side couples), it was absolutely hilarious and really did its comedy well, and i love the main characters. and many of the side characters. just wish we got to see some of the other supporting characters more, but since the last arc was mainly in the imperial city, alas, we barely got to see some of them.
i also love xiao se's absolute i'm-done-with-this attitude. my inner self is how he looks all the time. just a very tired man who's got a lot of plans simmering in that head of his, of which he's not sharing.
i also love lei wujie unexpectedly, kinda sad he got sidelined a bit at the end. didn't really expect to like him! but he reminds me of guo jing from condor heroes who i love. (side note: i'm pretty sure guo jing and hua rong are the only het couple in cdramas i've ever actually loved together and actively enjoyed their romance story from beginning to end)
however, lei wujie's relationship with ye ruoyi definitely has similar vibes with none of the heart. they're cute, but i'm not feeling anything from it. i definitely enjoyed ye ruoyi plotting with xiao se together better than their canon relationships, lol, though i appreciate how she thinks they're too much alike and doesn't like him that way, and vice versa. male-female friendships are something we don't get enough of. much better than tossing in weird love triangles all over the place.
anyways, i really love this drama, didn't expect that at all! the first half is the strongest, the latter half is interesting (I do like the scheming plots and power struggles), but they didn't do as good a job keeping the rest of the cast relevant. certain side characters just fade in and out as needed.
but again: i love the ending is just...the friends gallivanting off to adventure together! i'm not even particularly bothered by wu xin derping off and not joining them yet. he's not that kind of guy. he comes and goes as he pleases, and gets a kick out of coming to save the day. he'll probably pop up when they least expect it and finally get to make that poem of his a reality.
(last note: i see those parallels with mysterious lotus casebook and i'd love to see a crossover of the two one day...ah if i ever steel my heart to watch it all the way through, i might write that myself...)

hot take: The main female characters in The Blood of Youth are so much more interesting than the ones in Dashing Youth.
I did not like Wuxin’s mom in Blood of Youth and my opinion of her has not improved after seeing her in Dashing Youth.
And Yueyao is just so boring compared to Sikong Qianluo, Ye Ruoyi, and Li Hanyi from The Blood of Youth.

Who are your favorite characters from Blood of Youths? Do you have any favorite ships/pairings?
TANG LIAN TANG LIAN TANG LIAN I am a simple being I see a character be called da-shixiong (or da-ge etc) by another character who loves them and I immediately lose my mind
I also love Lei Wujie and Ye Ruoyi and in fact all of the main 6 Youths I'm so invested in the main characters which like rarely happens
(and also... Tang Ze... who is in literally two scenes in the whole show but I accidentally invented a personality for and now I'm invested) (my friends are laughing at me) (I deserve it)
ship-wise I'm more invested in the platonic/found family vibes but I could probably be persuaded to any combo, and have in fact been convinced of Xiao Se/Sikong Qianluo/Wuxin as either a full triangle or a 'xiao se has two hands' situation
also Xiao Chong/Zang Ming
ooh and also Prince Langya/Tang Lianyue/Sikong Changfeng/Li Xinyue/Ji Ruofeng as being a polycule or fwb in their youth (i don't know how much this will be contradicted by SNBM/Dashing Youth but I also don't care)
