your chest has never panted so harshly before, not even during your fathers military boot camp training. the three of you were running — no, it was more like sprinting for dear life. you all has defined the people you grew up around, the scientists, board members, umbrella workers, as your enemy.
Tumblr media
rightfully so, charlotte has a tremendous amount of built up fury within her. the kind that has molded into her skin as a thick front where nobody would be able to penetrate through.
she hated them — despised everyone in this building. the way her eyebrows knitted together never ceased when you saw her breaking out of her cell. her expression was full of distaste which was blatantly directed at every worker that has made it their life job to torture her.
you still didn't have a single clue what tests they have subjected her to throughout these years, but she seemed to have been shaped into a killing machine because everyone that potentially stood in their way she had mercilessly killed on spot. you watched in shock as she broke workers necks with a swift and clean motion which your father had taught you prior, or a swift kick that forced them to crush into the wall and cause an indent.
her strength was inhuman — like immensely powerful. for someone that's only 5'4, she shouldn't have that kind of force within her tiny figure. you didn't let your admiration for her abilities (that were forced upon her, so it's not so great) let your guard down as you held your gun and stabilized it with your other hand, lodging a piece of metal into the brains that happened to slip from charlottes grasp alive.
elias had done the same as well, shockingly he seemed to handle himself just fine. he never wanted to be near a gun whenever we were on guard at charlottes cell, and once said that he hates them — like, despises using them. his eyes had fell into a deep sorrow whenever he revealed that part about himself, like he had gone through hell because of them.
"we're almost there!" elias shouts in a breathless voice. to be fair, you both were panting sharply out of mouths. the red flickering lights shined down on all of your faces, blurring out how the embarrassing truth on how out of breath you were.
the door in front of you — the exit to be in fact, began to close. "no!" you cried out as you reached for the enclosing space between the door and the outside world, showing more emotion within your voice than you wanted to. you all were so close to leaving — to achieving freedom. hadn't you all suffered enough? couldn't something just go your way for once? does the universe hate you all that much?
charlottes eyebrows furrowed at the sight in front of them before she slid underneath and placed her shoulder underneath the door, holding it up for them to make it. your eyes widened as you took in the scene before you. what the hell had they put into her blood — or into her in general. you were baffled, starstruck even, and that showed as your pace was slowing down.
"hurry up!" charlotte shouted in a strained voice as she shut her eyes tightly. the weight on her shoulders were becoming more and more heavier, fighting back against her abnormal strength.
shaking your head, "right —!" you say as you begin sprinting once again. the more you found out about charlotte, the more you were grateful she was on your side.
once you all were out, charlotte let go of the door and it slammed shut. everyone was panting due to the excessive amount of exercise. "who knew escaping was so exhausting." elias stated as he placed his hands on knees and leaned over. "right charlotte?" elias's lips curl into a smile as he glanced over to her.
charlottes body tenses at the sudden acknowledgment before nodding her head with an flustered expression. that intrigued you — the way she acted around elias was much different than how you've ever seen her. it was a much softer side, and ... it was cute. they were cute, or their pronounced dynamic was at least. you watched from the sideline as elias went over to her and checked her over, ensuring she was okay as if she has a tendency to lie about her true state.
this was the first time that you really were able to take in their features. elias was a tall, lanky even, yet somehow still managed to have broad muscles around his figure. he had this distinctive coffee brown tinted hair that was split perfectly down the middle. his eye were a hazel green, the kind of shade you'd see in a brightly lit forest. the shade that's somehow in the middle of being vibrant but cold at the same time. it brings some type of warmth feeling when you gaze into them for too long. it's soft of comforting, if anything. his face was tanned, probably due to his uproar of hours that he had trained outside for. he was extremely handsome, like the kind of good looking where you start to delude yourself into believing a life with him would be magnificent. early morning kisses, brewed coffee breath, smiles ... a lot of them, arms wrapped around your torso to pull you closer, cozy — really cozy.
charlotte was ... complicated. sometimes she'd give off something that was alien like. someone who was completely different than everyone else and desperately stayed away from everyone who came close to her. other times, she seemed like a genuinely good person. she was cute, adorable even. her hair was slightly more vibrant than elias's, but a similar shade of brunette. the style of her locks were still slightly matted, and obviously not brushed out. her cheeks were typically were a rose shade, but that deepened whenever elias was near. her lips were full and slightly chapped, probably dehydrated. her eyes held a lot of built up emotion which made it extremely difficult to decipher her. however, when she was with elias she showed her true self. the quiet, obedient, sweet souled girl who had been taken advantage of by the supporters of umbrella's experiments.
she was just like you two, and you both were just like her. in a way, you all connected on a spiritual level because of that.
you subconsciously smiled at the sight of them two, before straightening your posture. "are you two a thing?" you ask, gesturing back and forth between them. you were curious because of how they acted it truly seemed like they both had some kind of soft spot connection with one another.
elias's eyes widened before instantly shaking his head. "no." he sternly denies, empathizing on the no a tad bit too harshly. his response time was a little quick for it to not be seen as an insult of some kind. "no, we're not anything." he adds while a nervous smile appeared across his face. you glanced back to charlotte who seemed to be upset by his tone, or his words in general. however, she held her tongue and instead rubbed her arm with a saddened expression
honestly, if you were her shoes you'd be embarrassed by the way he denied it. it seemed like he would rather date a shoe than her, and that affected you even if you weren't in her position. you shrugged your shoulders before taking a moment to stretch your arms over your head. "we need to continue on. we're not out of the woods yet."
elias nodded his head, not noticing charlotte pained expression. "got a plan?" he questioned you as he checked his ammunition.
"we can either run, or take down umbrella entirely." you stated your two options. you were done stretching and began to count everything you had on you that would be deemed worthy.
"i'm taking down umbrella." charlotte spoke up in a stern voice which dragged both of your attention towards her. she was standing in a more strong position, as if to show off that she meant every single word she had just spoke. her eyebrows were knitted together. "i want to take revenge on what they did to us over the course of our entire lives. you two do not have to come with me, but i am not able to move on knowing that they could potentially continue to hurt other kids in our place." she added onto her statement, backing up her decision with a very reasonable explanation.
you stayed silent for a moment as a thousand scenarios ran through your mind at which path you should take. if you supported the narrative to take down umbrella, it would be a difficult task and would take awhile before you were fully able to achieve that. not even to mention all the times where things could go wrong.
if you took the easy way out, you could be out of this city within an hour. then again, what would you do after that? your father could come after you, or more than likely send people to fetch you. you didn't have any money to financially support you. you'd have to start from square one which is being homeless and working your way up.
"i'm in." elias's voice brought you out of your thoughts as your mouth slightly parted in disbelief. he, the person who hated violence and guns, was perfectly fine with taking down umbrella? it was shocking news and completely out of character for him. "charlotte, i'm behind you in this." he says to her specifically, putting a hand onto her shoulder to empathize his support in her decision. then, both of their gazes directed their attention onto you as they patiently awaited your response.
you looked at them both, licking your lips before slightly bitting on the bottom as you continued to take in the consequences of both paths. you inhaled a deep breath, letting it go after a few seconds of holding it to relief some of the tension built inside of you. you returned your gaze to them, "i'm in." you announce to them. a sense of seriousness filling your tone.
both of them smiled as they walked over to you and patted your shoulders. "cant do it without our leader." elias's teased you with his typical smug grin that always caused you to slightly chuckle. charlotte unexpectedly nodded in agreement with him though which warmed your heart.
"alright," you spoke in an amused tone as you closed your eyes and took in the new chapter that had just begun within your life. "let's take down umbrella. to do that, we need to go to the police station." you tell them and they both shook their head in understanding as to what you had meant by that. you took the first step to the direction of the police station.

Blade Runner/Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? AU.
Blade runner/replicant! Slider x Blade runner Maverick.
Contains a bit of NSFW discussion and huge spoilers of both works.
This is a sort of mish-mash of both the movie adaptation and the original novel. While Deckard is clearly a human in the original while coded as a replicant in the Final Cut version of the film. The interesting thing about Deckard is the difference in his character in the novel and the film. While Deckard in the novel is portrayed as very…human, overtly showing distress, desire, anger and jealousy, the film depicts him being colder and less human, almost like a replicant himself as he does his job. (He, a supposed “hero” shoots a female replicant from the back—in that day and age!)
I also LOVE to see his respective characterization getting mixed; Slider being his jokey self while struggling to make sense of his identity, or Maverick slowly getting more and more protective of his partner along the way. In addition, the novel features another blade runner/bounty hunter called Resch—who Deckard suspects to be an andy/replicant (and I honestly LOVE his character. The scene where he gets so defensive about being an andy that he overkills an android? GOD.) In this AU, I’ve set Slimav as partners in “retiring” replicants, as in the collaboration between Deckard and Resch in the novel—with a twist. A romantic twist in the same fashion of Deckard/Rachael in the movie. Sex to restore each other’s blurred, messy identities. A kiss to make sure they are there, together. Confusion and affection. Anger and passion. Desperation mixed with equally intense desire for each other’s touch and comfort.
The deal is, Slimav but Blade Runner. The Tyrell Corp.—now we have Dr. Charlotte Blackwood! (I love Charlie. I will let her explore my body like WTF girl!!!! Ur gorgeous and educated and everything!!!!!!!!!! Leave that man!!!!!!!!!!). She is the one who created the Nexus 8–Slider, that is—with an implanted memory, reduced/more human-like stamina, reproductive capacity, and no expiration date assigned. The Nexus 8 promises, as she claims, the next-gen of human race—and Slider is the pilot version of the series. She and her team want to test his capabilities while also flying under the radar of the authorities, particularly when there’s a group of rebel replicants lingering around. So she contacts LAPD and Maverick and “offers” to “lend” another blade runner to do the job. Of course Slider has to take the VK test because why not. Why not let them experience that sexual tension.
The rebel replicants? We’ve got Mr. Iceman (Roy Batty). I’m still thinking about how to cast other replicants but Iceman as Roy just makes sense to me. In the novel, it is implied that Rachael and Pris (who is Roy’s partner in the film but just an accomplice in the novel) are created using the same mold, looking identical to one another while being different in their positions/classes. I’m usually a IceSarah shipper (and I will DEFINITELY write them in the future!!!) so whether to cast Sarah as Pris or as Zhora (who’s also got an important, very magnificent role in both the novel and the film; cornering Resch to the edge of identity crisis in the former and making Deckard question his job and his affection towards Rachael in the movie) is the biiiig question for me. Who knows? Maybe we can go batshit crazy and make it Slimav AND Slice!
Also, maybe this is a hot take but Charlie/Carole (as J. F. Sebastian in the film). An unhinged genius who only truly loves her creations that are replicants and an equally unhinged engineer who is devoted to fulfilling her boss’s desire. C’mon, I believe she can pull off that awkward yet somewhat eerie vibes while making it cute.
And Gaff. Do you know who plays Gaff in this scenario? Goose. That’s it. I said what I said. I love how Gaff treats Deckard like his dog in the film, hitting him with his cane and turning a blind eye at his betrayal almost whimsically. Dark Goode lovers rise up. Rise up and make the tension turn all the way up.

First episode of the new series is live on YouTube.
[[Video ID:
We open with a talking head of Charlotte, a black woman with rectangular glasses, and her hair pulled back into a tight bun. She has ditched the silvery backpack. Finally.
“Every series you find will tell you this, but we at the new Hunting Hauntings team are proud to brand ourselves as the only series to only investigate the truly paranormal. Today, we’re in Manchester, looking into reports of abnormalities in the meat section at a particular corner store.”
A shot of Dez, Charlotte, and Angie, walking into the corner store. They look an eclectic bunch.
Angie, a white woman with blonde curls under a bandanna and more crystal jewelry than anyone would are to count, speaks. The camera zooms in on her.
“My senses are tingling… there are restless spirits here.”
“Angie. We agreed, none of the psychic stuff.” The camera pans to Charlotte. “Stick to what is actually real.”
Dez, a pale redhead in pink with cat-eared headphones around his neck giggles, making a beeline for the refrigerated section.
A talking head of Dez.
“I was the first one to find the meats! They were in great shape if you didn’t actually want meat and were hoping to get mold instead.”
Back to Desmond in the store, bent over and looking at a refrigerated shelf of deli meats. They’re covered in various colors of fuzzy mold. Dez pulls a small pack of sliced turkey from his sleeve.
“Did you bring that with you?” Harold’s voice comes from behind the camera.
“I always have sandwich meat on me.”
“You… what?”
Desmond laughs, pulling a single slice from the pack. “The look on your face! Oh, no. I just thought it would be helpful for experimentation here.”
He drops the slice onto the shelf with the other meats. It’s immediately overcome by grey, green, and white mold.
“Well, that eliminates this just being a case of poor management.”
Harold snorts at Desmond’s joke.
Cut to
A talking head of Angie.
“We brought a pack of sliced ham back to London with us to perform a seance, through which we determined—”
Desmond shouts from off screen. “Angie! Script.”
Angie sighs and lifts up a sheet of paper.
“The mysterious mold issue is not to do with the meat itself, though it did stay moldy. When not on the shelf in this particular store, the mold did not spread to other food products. Experimentation in the store, headed by Mr. Parfit, yielded that the mold was not exclusive to meats, but was able to spread to breads, cheeses, various fruits, pasta, and a bic lighter.”
As she lists items, she is used as a voice over footage of Dez setting them down on the affected shelf and watching excitedly as they succumbed to the mold.
A talking head of Charlotte.
“But one thing was still bothering me. Two things, really. Firstly, the original tip off we received claimed that the first time she was in the store, there was no mold on the meats. She didn’t examine them closely, but she’s sure she would have noticed if they were as molded as they are.
“The second is the camera trouble we had with recording. According to Harold, our cameraman, footage he attempted to take with any modern camera showed the food pristine in its packaging, and only his camcorder was able to capture the mold.”
Cut to: Desmond talking head.
“And so, I got to thinking. And then I got to more testing. Roll the footage!”
Back inside the corner store, Desmond approaches a random shopper.
“Ma’am, hiya, we’re doing a documentary, would you mind telling me what you see over there?”
He points to the molded over shelf.
“Kid, it’s just a shelf of meats. I’m trying to shop, and I don’t need you or the meats today.”
Dez looks to the camera with a huge grin on his face.
Footage plays of a similar scene occurring with three other customers. Only one of them shows an appropriate level of revulsion, and only after Desmond points something out to them. Desmond’s voice plays over the recordings, sounding much more excited than his words imply.
“So, we figured out that unless you’re actively looking for mold on the products, they appear to be pristine and fresh, which fits perfectly with our original tip, where the woman grabbed something without checking for mold, then realized it was moldy when she gave it a proper look at home.
“It’s a fear, deliberate and specific, even though most people don’t feel it very strongly, that you’ll accidentally consume something unsafe due to a lack of diligence on the part of yourself or a seller. And what’s so interesting to me, is the real fear isn’t from the shelf itself—though that would give a strong sense of revulsion. Just think. Years down the road, people exposed to this might still be obsessively checking their food for signs of mold growth, terrified that they’ll miss something and fall ill. Isn’t it fascinating?”
At the last sentence, it cuts to Desmond’s talking head. Harold speaks from behind the camera.
“Dez, you’re at a 12. We need you closer to a 5. You sound insane.”
Desmond laughs.
Cut to Charlotte, in the store, speaking with the owner.
“Sir, my team and I have reason to believe that your meats shelf is an active danger to your community. We’d recommend its removal as soon as possible.”
The owner, a large, meaty man wearing a baseball cap and a seemingly permanent scowl, rubs the back of his head.
“Looks alright to me.”
“Sir, I think you’ll find if you look a little closer, there’s quite a bit of—”
“I said there’s not an issue.”
The owner scratches his collar as he raises his voice. It’s difficult to see, but a tiny bit of that dark grey mold is sprouting just under his shirt.
Desmond steps in front of Charlotte.
“So sorry, sir. My friend gets a little paranoid about expired food. The shelf is fine, we’ll just get going.”
“But—” Charlotte starts to protest.
“We’ll just get going.” Dez repeats.
The owner crosses his arms. “Probably for the best.”
Cut to:
A talking head of Charlotte.
“We were unable to get the owners to remove the affected shelf, but I did leave a Yelp review warning future customers of the danger. And now we’re making this as well. If you know of any other phenomena we should do an exposé on, don’t hesitate to leave a comment or reach out. Stay safe out there. You never know what’s just out of sight.”
Just when it seems the video is over, it cuts to Desmond, filming himself in a room lit with LED lights.
“Okay listen, nobody on the team is going to watch this after it gets posted, and I didn’t want to ruin their fun. But there’s something wrong in that Al-Ghizawi house the other day. I can feel it. I won’t be back investigating, and I don’t know what it was I felt, but there’s something there. I just wish I could put a finger on it… Parfit out.”
End video.]]

Rediscover the Magic: 20 Timeless Classics to Revisit in 2024 Classic literature has a unique power to transport readers across time and space, offering profound insights and timeless messages that remain relevant across generations. As we plunge into 2024, there's no better time to dust off some literary gems and experience the magic anew. This curated list of 20 classics to rediscover isn’t just about revisiting old favorites; it’s an invitation to explore foundational texts that have shaped our understanding of storytelling, culture, and the human condition. By diving back into these must-read classics, readers gain a chance to not only appreciate the enduring craftsmanship of literary icons but also confront contemporary issues through the lens of time-tested narratives. Whether it's the social critiques embedded in George Orwell's "1984," the complex human emotions in Leo Tolstoy's "Anna Karenina," or the rich allegory in Herman Melville's "Moby-Dick," each of these books addresses universal problems and delivers invaluable lessons. Rediscovering these classics can deepen our understanding of today's world, providing both solace and perspective in our fast-paced, ever-changing society. Plot Rediscovering classics often means diving into intricate plots that reflect the societal and individual issues of their time. Books like War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy present a multifaceted tapestry of narratives, intertwining the lives of individuals with the grand scope of historical events. On the other hand, Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre offers a compelling narrative of personal growth and moral triumph, which still resonates with modern readers. The complex plots not only capture the essence of the human experience but also challenge the reader to think beyond the surface. These classics are often characterized by their ability to weave multiple subplots into a cohesive whole. For instance, Charles Dickens' Great Expectations uses a central plot of personal development while interlinking it with themes of social class and personal redemption. The carefully constructed plots in classic literature keep the readers engaged, while the resolution of these plots often provides a deeper commentary on human nature and society. Characters One of the most captivating aspects of classic literature is its well-defined characters. These characters often undergo significant development and are portrayed with a depth that makes them relatable even centuries later. For example, Elizabeth Bennet in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice is an iconic character who breaks the mold of her time, portraying intelligence and independence. Similarly, the character of Holden Caulfield in J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye has become a symbol of teenage angst and rebellion. Classic literature also offers a diverse range of characters, from the tragic hero to the morally ambiguous anti-hero. The multi-dimensional characters such as Hamlet, in Shakespeare's play, showcase the complexity of human emotions and decisions. This depth allows readers to explore different facets of humanity and often leads to a deeper understanding of themselves and others. Writing Style The writing style of classic literature is often marked by its timeless quality and command of language. Authors like Virginia Woolf, in Mrs. Dalloway, utilize stream-of-consciousness techniques to provide insight into the characters' thoughts and emotions. This style creates an intimate connection between the reader and the characters. Similarly, the lyrical prose of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude imbues the narrative with a magical quality that transcends ordinary storytelling. Moreover, the dialogue in classic literature often reflects the linguistic norms of the period, providing a fascinating glimpse into historical vernaculars and social etiquette. This authenticity in dialogue can be seen in the works of Mark Twain, where the colloquial speech of his characters adds richness and realism to the stories.
The mastery of different literary devices, such as symbolism, imagery, and allegory, also adds layers of meaning to these timeless works. Setting The settings in classic literature often function as more than just physical locations; they are integral to the story, contributing to the narrative's mood and themes. For example, the moors in Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights are almost a character in themselves, reflecting the tumultuous emotions and violent passions of the characters. Similarly, the setting of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby amidst the opulence of the Jazz Age serves as a backdrop for exploring themes of decadence and moral decay. Settings can also act as metaphors, extending the thematic concerns of the narrative. George Orwell's 1984 uses a dystopian setting to amplify the sense of oppression and surveillance, driving home the author’s critique of totalitarian regimes. Through their settings, classic books provide not just a stage for the action but also enrich the reader's understanding of the broader socio-political context of the story. Unique Aspects Many classic novels possess unique aspects that set them apart from contemporary literature. For instance, James Joyce's Ulysses is renowned for its experimental structure and language, which broke new ground in literary form and content. Another example is The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer, which offers a vivid portrayal of medieval society through a series of interconnected stories told by pilgrims on their way to Canterbury. This frame narrative design adds depth and variety, making it a uniquely engaging read. Additionally, classics often introduce philosophical and ethical questions that remain relevant today. Fyodor Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment delves deep into the psyche of its protagonist, exploring themes of guilt, redemption, and the nature of justice. These timeless questions keep classics perpetually relevant, prompting readers from different generations to reflect on their moral and philosophical beliefs. Different Aspects or Subtopics Related to Classic Literature One key aspect of classic literature is its reflection of historical and cultural contexts. By reading classics, we gain insights into the thoughts, values, and issues that were pertinent during the authors' lifetimes. This historical perspective can deepen our appreciation of how societal issues have evolved over time. For instance, Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin provides a powerful commentary on the injustices of slavery and played a crucial role in shaping public opinion before the American Civil War. Another significant subtopic is the influence of classic literature on modern storytelling. Many contemporary authors draw inspiration from these timeless works, either by reinterpreting themes, mimicking narrative techniques, or even directly responding to classic texts. Margaret Atwood’s Wide Sargasso Sea, for example, is a prequel to Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre that reimagines the story from a different perspective. This intertextuality highlights the continual dialogue between past and present in the literary world. Rediscovering Classics Rediscovering classics can offer new insights that are often overlooked in earlier readings. As readers mature and gain more life experience, their interpretations of classic literature can evolve, revealing new layers of meaning. Rereading can be a rewarding experience—what might have seemed boring or irrelevant in high school can transform into a fascinating exploration of human nature and societal constructs for adult readers. Classics like The Odyssey by Homer can be appreciated not only for their adventure tales but also for their profound exploration of themes such as heroism and the human condition. Moreover, events like World Book Day or specialized reading groups and book clubs provide platforms for readers to rediscover and discuss these timeless works in a communal setting. These discussions often bring new
interpretations to light, enriching the reading experience and fostering a deeper appreciation for classic literature. Online platforms and literary forums also facilitate global conversations about these works, allowing readers to share their perspectives and insights widely. Timeless Books Timeless books are those that continue to resonate with readers across generations due to their universal themes, memorable characters, and insightful commentaries on the human experience. Books like To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee address issues of racial injustice and moral integrity, themes that remain poignant and relevant today. Similarly, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein delves into questions about ethics in science and the consequences of playing god, issues that continue to spark debate in the modern world. These timeless books often undergo various adaptations, be it in films, television, or even stage productions, keeping them in the public eye. For example, Shakespeare’s works have been adapted countless times, each version offering a unique take on his classic tales. Through such adaptations, the core essence of these stories is preserved and introduced to new audiences, ensuring their relevance and appeal endures. Literary Classics Literary classics serve as benchmarks of excellence in narrative, character development, and thematic depth. Anton Chekhov’s short stories, for instance, are renowned for their subtlety and use of everyday situations to explore complex human emotions. His minimalist approach leaves much to reader interpretation, enabling a wide array of responses depending on one's own experiences and insights. Another hallmark of literary classics is their influence on other works and their ability to encapsulate the zeitgeist of their era. John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath captures the struggles of ordinary people during the Great Depression, providing valuable social commentary while also creating an enduring narrative of perseverance and resilience. These classics are not only timeless in their appeal but also serve as windows into the different epochs they depict. Must-Read Classics Must-read classics include works that have had a profound impact on literature and society. These books are often included in academic curriculums and are essential for anyone looking to gain a comprehensive understanding of literary history and its evolution. Herman Melville's Moby Dick is a must-read for its deep symbolism, complex characters, and exploration of themes such as obsession and revenge. Must-read classics also include books that have been trailblazers in their genres. For example, Bram Stoker’s Dracula set the benchmark for gothic horror, weaving complex themes of fear, sexuality, and immortality into an unforgettable narrative. Reading these classics provides not only enjoyment and intellectual stimulation but also a foundation upon which to understand the development and nuances of literary genres over time. Pros Rich Language and Complex Characters Classic literature often features rich language and complex characters that offer depth and nuance, allowing readers to immerse themselves fully. The sophistication in the language used invites readers to appreciate the artistry in writing. The well-developed characters create a strong emotional connection, providing readers with a profound understanding of human nature and psychological complexities, thereby enriching their reading experience. Cultural and Historical Insight These books offer invaluable insights into the cultural and historical contexts of their times. By exploring societal norms, historical events, and philosophical thoughts, readers gain a broader understanding of the past. This knowledge contributes to a well-rounded worldview and allows readers to draw parallels with contemporary issues, making the reading experience intellectually rewarding and enlightening. Enduring Themes and Lessons Timeless books often deal with universal themes such as love, power, morality, and the human condition.
These enduring themes resonate with readers across generations, providing them with timeless lessons and perspectives. The philosophical and moral questions posed by literary classics encourage deep reflection and introspection, creating a profoundly enriching user experience that extends beyond the act of reading. Cons Archaic Language and Pacing The language used in classic literature can be archaic and challenging to modern readers, often leading to frustration and disengagement. The pacing of older works might also be slower compared to contemporary novels, which can struggle to hold the reader's attention. This can detract from the enjoyment and accessibility of these books, making the reading experience less enjoyable for some individuals. Complex Contextual References Many literary classics are filled with references that require an understanding of the historical, social, or political context of their time. Without this knowledge, readers may find it difficult to fully grasp the nuances and significance of certain passages. This complexity can make the reading experience challenging and may necessitate additional research, which could be off-putting for casual readers. Diverse Representation Issues Given the historical contexts in which many classics were written, they often lack diverse representation and may perpetuate outdated stereotypes or prejudices. Modern readers may find these aspects alienating or offensive, which can impact their overall experience negatively. The lack of inclusivity can also limit the relatability and resonance of these works for a contemporary, diverse audience. Impact on User Experience Engagement versus Accessibility The rich language and complex characters of classic literature enhance depth and engagement but may also impede accessibility. Readers who appreciate linguistic artistry and character development find these works highly rewarding. Conversely, those unfamiliar with older styles or demanding narratives might struggle to stay engaged. This dichotomy affects the overall user experience by either elevating it for some or complicating it for others. Educational Value and Readability While classic literature provides significant educational value through cultural, historical, and philosophical insights, it can also present readability challenges. Highly intellectual content offers a rewarding and enlightening experience for those willing to delve deeply. However, the need for background knowledge and the presence of archaic language can deter individuals looking for a straightforward, enjoyable read, thereby impacting the readability and overall user satisfaction. Modern Relevance and Relatability The timeless themes present in literary classics often hold modern relevance, influencing contemporary thought and providing lessons that endure. Yet, issues related to diverse representation and historical prejudices may reduce relatability for today's readers. This clash between enduring relevance and dated viewpoints shapes the user experience, making it a complex interaction between admiration for literary brilliance and criticism of outdated norms. There are a few things going on that we're going to mention.
- This cloud of uranium gas. came up to Punta Gorda and sat here for an hour. at about 1.7 rad and most people were exposed. our son probably one rad. the whole time. Now that's a pretty good exposure for. an hour and then would go in to our son about three eighths to half an inch. everywhere.. So some bone would be a would be affected. and other areas of his body. that we're not getting touched. And you guys are getting exposed a lot and are not taking precautions. and you're not sending warnings here. They're all over the world sending warnings. of dust clouds. And people are testing and confirming. And here you're not doing anything. And you're getting sick. So wondering why that was and we heard people saying we'll just heal it and fix it in the morning and that kind of stuff. And we're finding out that you're a bunch of losers. Most of you think you can heal it? Yes. Most of you will not be able to. And son is now probably down to about 7 months. and on the interior. Two and three quarter of a year. And it will be falling. throughout the week This will keep happening. from different sources. The small circles will be gone. and probably two days.
- We do understand you want our son to be sick, and you think he will be and you're banking on it, and you. think you can get better and think. you're fooling him. Well, you're not. And we see how bad it is. Most of you are mental patients. and don't understand what a real mutant is in your idiots. So we're going to. go ahead and pick up people who are dying because you sound horrendous because your brain is deteriorating. You're becoming zombies. A lot of you were doing a test but we have an estimate of 35% of Charlotte County will be dead by morning.. That was just a steam cloud from a small circle. What happens? if a big dust cloud comes from a nuclear weapon. Yeah, that's right. You're not going to be here.
- The Southern Temple, FL is embroiled. It's the southern tip in a war. over those stashes and caches. and they are firing near them. and it will not help the situation. They're not making a trough or anything with their firing near it. and the holes are pretty deep They're about 5 feet deep. We are noticing that they're causing tremors. This is causing the infiltration of salt water more in. to the walls of. the quarter mile circles. There are five down there Some are bigger. That will actually push it forwards We thought that it might breach. the large ones in three days. Now we think two days. So maybe a Saturday night. also
also-
- We have news that your health is not wanted on any. project that we're trying to start. and that was from the Mac proper and The pseudo empire. and they're trying to instruct you to cease and desist. all these special projects. and you say no
- Couple more things in cities are under siege and. that's the separate just cities. There's a huge force at each of them. in some of the cities they are encroaching on the borders. and will probably soon come in. In the Eas In the Eastern Hemisphere, five cities out of. the 20 very large have collapsed. They are in ruins and tatters, and nobody really lives there They've been abandoned.. Five more will fall in the next two days. Roughly and we expect the remaining 10 to fall within a week and a half of now. And they're doing very badly. and they stopped calling people. Yes. the people in there. The people in these cities decided to sit and fight. and not to deplete their forces. The way we say it is, they're really not on the up and up. and found something that the Max found in the city. on it and they don't care for us going there. And one of them said that. it was Woody. There's others here who heard it and they get it. So we're going to print.
Thor Freya
I can actually change mine over I have one of those Bradley GT. I'd rather change the Bradley GT 2. and he says why not make new molds off? of it? and I can change the mold. while I'm using the new one. So I'm trying to do that. And what you're saying is I can make the mold from the panel then. make a panel and then make the changes and make a new mold. So I'm gonna try and do that. It's kinda hard doing it the other way. It's a good idea. Then I can leave the car the way it is. You have to take it off there. There's a lot of work. It shouldn't be that hard, he says. That's true. So I'm gonna start working on it right now It's a joy in my life, and I'm gonna have fun.
Hera He says it might even be my car So I said, what are you talking about? I'm working on mine. Like, I do see what you're saying.

re-upload! some test writing for Shane, the canine companion to my version of The Mechanic from Aftonbuilt
Before T’aaku had ever come into his life, Shane was a decorated Hero: an accomplished military canine, the best out of his litter. But no matter how amazing his performances, it didn’t spare him from being abandoned on the streets to starve and die alone. Shane had refused to leave the spot in which he was abandoned, no matter who drove by and tried to beckon him away. He was loyal, waiting for a partner that did not share the strong bond in return. T’aaku had come at just the right time, whisking him away when Shane was too weak and too emaciated to fight back. For six months, he tried to escape. And for six months, T’aaku was patient and understanding, working within his comforts until Shane finally gave up and settled in, accepting his new role with a new partner.
That mechanic saved his life, and he swore he would never get separated from his pack-mate again.
Shane didn’t understand the reasoning behind his pack-mate hunting down the mechanical monsters, but he did know that the reason didn’t matter. He rarely had an understanding of his missions before this life, he just knew that he had to act. Now it was no different.
Nose to the ground, he stepped over debris and weaved around abandoned tables in the decrepit pizzeria. Unlike the last, there was no stench of decay (like what clung onto the rabbit man). He smelled mold, stale air, and the distinct smell those mechanical monsters gave off. Old posters that had long clung to the walls were now peeled and faded with time, but he didn’t care for the colorful menagerie of a children’s play place this used to be. He was following a stronger smell than the rest, to a back room lined with forgotten toys. Unlike the rest of the building, this place seemed untouched- frozen in time.
Shane paused as soon as he entered the room, noting the sudden shift in atmosphere. The air was ticker here, warning him of a stronger presence. He waited, ears standing straight up to listen, but found absolute silence around him.
Until a small voice broke through: “Puppy…”
Shane’s whole body tensed. That sounded like a child… He tilted his head, trying to really listen. What were they doing here? This was no place for pups! His lips curled back with a warning growl when he heard movement. There was a large container before him, the top unlatching as the lid flew open. A long, black and white-striped hand reached out… then another. Then, a dirtied white face lifted, revealing itself to be just another machine. Shane could only watch as The Marionette raised herself up completely, towering over him with her spindly body.
Nowhere near as bulky as the others, Shane wasn’t bothered. He could easily rip this one apart like a cheap dog toy.
“Puppy…” Charlotte called to him again, reaching her hand out. She could not blame an animal for the crimes of the devil himself, even if this animal was helping him. Charlotte reached her hand out for him, beckoning him closer. And Shane obliged, warily.
He kept his head low, his steps small. His larger body inched toward her, poised and ready for an attack.
“Good boy,” Charlotte praised once he was right in front of her. She dared to reach out, just as slowly and carefully as he approached. “It’s not fair, doggie,” she explained as her cold, plastic-coated fingers buried in his fur. “That man killed us…”
Shane could no longer see the room he was in. Flashes of terrible images from another time passed through his mind like a movie speeding through the plot. He could see this place full of life once more, see the animatronics on stage, see children following Him to a back room-- the golden rabbit suit. The monster T’aaku brought home. Their spirits haunting a man shrouded in all purple, until he dove into the rabbit suit for sanctuary and was effectively trapped within.
Charlotte pulled her hands back, seeing the fur between Shane’s shoulders bristle in rage. “Will you help me?” She couldn’t reach out to the Mechanic like this… so his canine companion would have to do.

How do you think the ii and hfjone cast would interact?
Ooo hmm
1st and foremost they all will be very like scared(that's not exactly the right word but I can't think what that word is) like cautious?? around mephone cause he would give them airy vibes (being able to revive people and hosting the game show and all that)
As for the contestants I think they'll ask them for their real names and will be confused abt how their names are their object names
Iphone and mephone thing w/ liam and fan from earlier because that's silly
Amelia and candle bestie speedrun
I feel like Charlotte would be a taco defender/silly
They all try to take care of charlie (gone wrong) (baseball is now crying w/ him) (help)
Salt and pepper make taylor an honorary bcff cause I want to see how that dynamic plays out
Alsoalso test tube would definitely study the mold on Charlotte and will make a cure for free and prolly like in less than 24hrs cause she likes a good challenge like that

Hey! How have ypu been? 2,3,6,7,9,15 Who else but Monty (Kata, Brulee, Peros too :D) yeah it's a big order!
Phew, that one sure took a while! But everything for you, friend 💕💕 We're alright, hope you've been well too! ✨
Some practicalities first: We decided to organize this answer by characters, for maximum space to go into detail on each headcanon! Some headcanons pertain to our modern AU rather than to the One Piece canon as we found these headcanons worked better for a particular prompt: we'll indicate those at the start of each bullet point!
Send us a number and a character and we'll post headcanons!

2. Job headcanon
Modern AU: Mont D'Or is a librarian by passion and a prosecutor by profession. He opened up and manages his own library in the early mornings and late evenings, but in-between that, he works on court cases. He might be overworked, and is definitely a workaholic but he hardly ever slacks off on either of his careers; and he's notorious for being professional, convincing, and very attached to every case. Highly principled unless Mama orders him to do something for her, he refuses to prosecute those he doesn't believe should be prosecuted, and for those he wants to face justice - he will get so heated that he might get reprimanded by judges for yelling or by cops and detectives for joining their investigations uninvited. His sister, Galette, is his secretary, and she follows him around everywhere, helping out however much she can!
3. Drinking headcanon
Mont D'Or... might have a bit of an alcohol problem. It's not that he gets drunk often... but he does drink regularly. Essentially, every time his siblings piss him off, he takes a sip, so you can imagine how many sips accumulate throughout the day. His prefer drink is red dry wine and he mostly drinks alone, without witnesses, not to give a bad example! To get really drunk, he would have to drink a lot; but if he does get drunk, he mostly gets more explosive than usual or somewhat lagged out, processing all information input slower than normally.
6. Musical headcanon
In Mont D'Or's eyes, the main function music has is to help him either focus or unwind. For both of these roles, he enjoys classical music most - think especially something akin to Wagner. He despises loud music and prefers instrumental pieces, although he is also an opera enthusiast. His guilty pleasure, discovered quite recently, could also be lo-fi kind of music! It calms him down a little, even though he doesn't like to be caught listening to it, as his expressed music-related opinions are overall quite snobbish.
7. Food/Cooking headcanon
Mont D'Or would gladly cook if he had the time for it; but being as busy as he is, he is forced to depend on others and on ordering food throughout each day. His tastes encompass rather fancy cuisine: he adores charcuterie boards and seafood, refuses to eat fast food, adds cheese to pretty much everything that is remotely acceptable like an apple pie and calls it an acquired taste. Besides that, he always likes to have a cookie with his black coffee; considering how much coffee he drinks every day, that is a lot of cookies consumed!
9. Childhood headcanon
As a child, Mont D'Or was known as just a nerd. He was way more shy and less aggressive than he is now; it was only over time, having been ridiculed by some siblings for his unconventional (in this family) interests, that he toughened up and learned to stand up for himself. Ever since he learned to read, Mont D'Or was a frequent visitor to all libraries of Totto Land. At the time, there weren't that many, nor did they have impressive book collections, so soon enough, Mont D'Or started reading books way above his age target group, and by the time he came of age, he was disappointed to find out that he has already read every book currently available within Big Mom's territory. At first, little Mont D'Or wasn't quite sure what he can offer to his family of murderous pirates: he wasn't strong nor all that ruthless, and his strengths could be found rather in the areas that wouldn't be that useful for sailing or plundering. He also felt lonely before Galette came along, and he could most often be found alone, or around Compote, who had a soft spot for her smart little brother. Eventually, Mont D'Or figured out that strategy and organization were the areas where his family could need him, though; from there, he moved on to transform from a quiet nerd into a pillar of Big Mom Pirates’ planning.
15. School headcanon
Besides setting up many more libraries in Totto Land than it once had, Mont D'Or took it onto himself to kickstart a proper education system in his mother's territory. In the past, none of the Charlotte siblings went through formalized education, rather having to learn from experience or directly from Big Mom, other pirates, and from each other. Now, Mont D'Or makes sure that teachers are recruited to Totto, and at least basic schools (available universally) are established!
Modern AU: It is probably not surprising that at school, Mont D'Or would be a straight-A's student. Stellar at every test, he would however not be all that liked by the teachers due to his behavior problems. His temper and lack of respect for authority if the authority is wrong would both make him a troublesome student to get in conflict with. He'd absolutely correct the teachers on their mistakes, and if they dared refuse to acknowledge their faults... he would yell. 😔
Katakuri, Brulee, and Perospero under the cut!
Tumblr media
2. Job headcanon
Modern AU: As we discussed in a previous post, Katakuri would definitely be every parent's dream child, aka a doctor and a lawyer in one! A neurologist and an advocate, Katakuri would be very close to burnout, and wouldn't really actively work in the law field anymore, not wanting to infringe on Mont D'Or's turf. He would definitely work too much, but telling him to rest would hardly be a solution: with his perfectionism, he would not be able to sleep unless his task was carried out well. He wouldn't like his job all that much, really, but he'd still keep it to continue supporting his younger or less talented siblings with his money; and not to disappoint his mother, of course.
3. Drinking headcanon
Katakuri refuses to drink alcohol, finding every possible excuse to not be pressured into it. First of all, he just doesn't want to show his mouth, lay down, or do something even more embarassing for anyone to see if he gets drunk. More importantly, though, he is scared of falling into an addiction as a coping method, so he prefers to just avoid the temptation altogether. If possible, he'd rather not be around drunk people, too!
6. Musical headcanon
Katakuri enjoys all kinds of music and has quite a diverse tastes, with some of his favorites coming from indie rock, metal, cute pixel music, grunge, and more. He is quite embarrassed to share the music he listens to, so when possible, he listens to it on headphones. When he's fully convinced that he's alone, he might sing a little or bob his head to the music he enjoys; if listening to songs around people, though, he'll keep a fully straight, unmoved face.
7. Food/Cooking headcanon
As the supreme donut lover, Katakuri actually has a secret bucket list of all flavors of donuts he wants to try! He cares about the textures of food a lot, and generally prefers soft and chewy things. To set him apart from Luffy, Katakuri also doesn't really like meat, with few exceptions! Sometimes, Katakuri joins Perospero in his morning tea drinking sessions, and it was from his older brother that he learned to like his tea very sweet. As for cooking, he tried it as a child, but found to have little patience for it back then; now, he'd probably do way better if he tried to cook, but just like Mont D'Or, he just doesn't have the time!
9. Childhood headcanon
Katakuri is probably the Charlotte that changed the most since his early childhood. Before the Brulee incident, he was actually a rather lazy, even if talented, kid. To get him to train, an incentive of donuts was always necessary; and having been highly influenced by Daifuku and Oven, he also used to be a bit of a troublemaker. If anyone made fun of him or annoyed him, they would always see Katakuri throwing hands - he was far more eruptive than now and didn't really care what others thought. Brulee getting hurt because of him, though, had a life-changing effect on him; and it effectively molded him into the hardworking, serious, troubled person that he is now.
15. School headcanon
Modern AU: Despite starting off as a troublemaker who slept through the boring classes, these days Katakuri is a model student, and many teachers marvel at his transformation. He is just as good in sciences as in sports, and often represents his school in various competitions, regularly winning too! Although he gets A's in everything, his favorite school subjects remain the humanities. After school, he revises the lesson material for exactly an hour every day, but doesn't need to study much before tests, having a great memory and a kind of sixth sense for filtering out important information. Despite not wanting to be in the spotlight, he's very popular with fellow students and a lot of classmates have secret crushes on him, girls or guys!
Tumblr media
2. Job headcanon
Modern AU: As we headcanon, one of Brulee's main hobbies is tending to her herbal garden, and she knows a lot about the healing properties of plants! Naturally, then, she would gladly choose pharmacy as her career path: the calm atmosphere combined with helping others would fit her vibe perfectly. Besides that, she would also work voluntarily babysitting the children of her siblings; the kids would always be kind of scared of her at first, but soon enough they would outright cry whenever she would have to leave even just for a moment.
3. Drinking headcanon
Brulee drinks alcohol rarely and in small amounts; mostly as an addition to a good dinner. She is an extreme lightweight, so anything more than one glass of her favorite white wine results in her becoming way more clumsy than usual and inevitably getting a next-morning headache. To avoid this, she makes sure to never drink more than she knows she can handle!
6. Musical headcanon
Another classical music lover, Brulee would enjoy something akin to Schubert's songs most! Even though she isn't the best at it, with her voice being just a bit too nasal and too scratchy, Brulee likes to sing (especially ballads and lullabies!) and often hums while working. Having a bit more free time than most of her siblings, Brulee also managed to learn some instruments, albeit she only ever stuck to the basics and simple pieces. The piano is the instrument she plays rather well, so she can teach her younger siblings how to play a few easy songs if they so please; very recently, she also picked up the violin, and she enjoys practicing it although, so far, the sounds she can make hardly resemble what she would like to hear.
7. Food/Cooking headcanon
Brulee cooks a lot and enjoys doing that a bunch! She's quite experimental and healthy with her recipes, and prefers salty foods as well as meat or soups. As a result, she is one of the few bastions that keep some of her siblings from succumbing to dessert-only diets. Once in a while, she bakes bread too; since she always cooks way more food than she needs, she often ends up sharing or donating it! You can almost always smell something cooking up in her hut; even if Totto Land has so many high-level chefs, Brulee still likes to make her own, homemade food herself.
9. Childhood headcanon
As a child, Brulee was much more anxious than she is now. She was always a bit awkward and clumsy, and kind of bullied for her witchy appearance by the other children in ports and in Totto Land. Over time, she learned to embrace herself, though; in the stories her older siblings told her, she always identified with the witches, and she later proceeded to amplify this image of herself as much as possible, instead of resenting it!
15. School headcanon
Modern AU: Brulee would be a mediocre student, who'd be kind of picked on, at least until Katakuri got all set on defending her! Her favorite school subject would be history, and she'd also enjoy some parts of biology - though she'd much rather learn about plants and animals than the human insides. Always a sweetheart, Brulee would enjoy secretly making her classmates happy with little anonymous gifts; each birthday or Valentine's Day, anyone could count on at least one card from a secret friend, who everyone would suspect to be her, as she isn't all that great at hiding.
Tumblr media
2. Job headcanon
Modern AU: Perospero would be an interior designer, but really, one of a kind. Even if just designing a chair, he'd see his work as art and himself as an artist, and he'd act accordingly. Cracker Any architect unlucky enough to have to work with him would end up in despair as he'd blatanly ignore the technical limits and capacities of a building for the aesthetic. Likewise, his clients would have to be prepared for many unexpected decisions and costs: Perospero would not take orders from them but always stick to what he thinks looks good, no matter how intricate or expensive. Effectively, the only clients brave enough to employ him more than once would be the rich and extravagant ones: those would appreciate his work immensely, while anyone remotely more practical would have to complain.
3. Drinking headcanon
Perospero parties and gets drunk quite often, although he exclusively drinks overly sweet cocktails and never drinks outside of a social context! When he has too much to drink, he gets either hyper, horny, or annoying - or all three at once - depending on his mood. Whichever it is, he also loses all understanding of personal space, gets a lot more touchy, and much more likely to lick everyone and everything. At the end of the night, he has the tendency to pretend that he's much more drunk than he actually is, too, hoping that someone will carry him home like the princess he wants to be; though most of the time, it just ends up with Daifuku pulling him back by the leg.
6. Musical headcanon
Perospero loves to sing, especially publically, and he's surprisingly good at it! damn I really got a stroke first time I heard him sing, like, my man, how can you sing so well with an entire tongue out wtf Perospero explain. His preferred repertoire of music to sing includes all sorts of songs from musicals; as for music to listen to, he ranges between musicals and hyperpop, or any music sweet and bubbly on the outside but disturbing and horror-like as it develops!
7. Food/cooking headcanon
Perospero does not cook on principle, insisting that they have the chefs for it. His diet as a whole is downright atrocious; he adds sugar to quite literally everything, acts dramatically, as if he was poisoned if forced to eat anything not sweet enough, and mostly lives off candy. His 'tea' can hardly be called that anymore, considering that it contains more syrups and sugar than tea itself. Basically, Compote gets chills whenever she sees him eat and continuously marvels at how the fuck he is still alive.
9. Childhood headcanon
Having to take care of his siblings early on, Perospero didn't get much of a careless childhood. Once Linlin was unable to keep all children with her on the Rocks Pirates ship, by the time he was 8, he was put in charge of all the younger siblings she left in a port (while Compote was looking over the ones that stayed with Linlin on the ship). Perospero looks back at his childhood fondly, though; he liked ordering his brothers and sisters around, liked being in charge, and especially loved being admired and looked up to as the eldest sibling role model. Once Katakuri became a new favorite of the family, Perospero was so jealous and grumpy for a while that he even went through a rebellious phase of trying to run away; he came back less than a day later though, having cried his eyes out once missing his family and homesickness kicked in, never to try to leave ever again.
15. School headcanon
Modern AU: At school, Perospero would definitely focus on socializing way more than on learning. Among the teachers, he would be known as a smart but lazy kind of student, doing the bare minimum for most classes, though excelling in art and music. He would have mostly girl friends, essentially running his own mean girls group; together with them, he'd always come up with excuses to not exercise during P.E. so that his looks don't get ruined and so that he can just spend the time gossiping about the guys instead. If someone got on his bad side, Perospero would also not be above bullying them, although he wouldn't do that in a conventional way - rather, he'd just make his victims severely uncomfortable, getting way to close, switching between flirty and dangerous tones, and making them feel trapped before just backing off and laughing. An absolute menace to society, even in a modern AU 😔
If you managed to get through all of this, we salute you, soldier 🎖️Hope you enjoyed, though! ✨ It was sure fun to come up with. Thanks for the ask! 💕

JJ came back to the Chateau that night with an ear-splitting grin, practically beaming. The other Pogues were all lounging around the living room, Sarah included.
Immediately, John B was suspicious. “What did you steal?” He asked, looking over his friend for a sign of something hidden in his pockets.
JJ laughed and showed John B his empty hands. “Nothing, bro. Just in a good mood, I guess.”
Pope was kicked back on the couch, his feet on the coffee table. “Ten bucks you went back for more ice cream.”
Kiara wrinkled her nose. “Is ice cream a dirty metaphor now? He wasn’t with her, he was at work. Right JJ?”
Sarah turned to them, confused. “How is ice cream a dirty metaphor?”
JJ put his hands up and went to the kitchen to grab a beer. “Hey, hey! Stop the interrogation! No, Kie, ice cream is not a dirty metaphor. Mind out of the gutter, woman.”
Pope furrowed his brow. “So you did get ice cream.”
JJ just grinned as he took a sip of the beer.
Pope turned to Kiara, who was already grumbling. “Ha! Ten bucks, hand it over.”
She fished a bill out of her pocket, scowling, and slapped it into Pope’s hand. “How did it go?”
Sarah looked back and forth between Pope and Kiara and JJ. “I’m lost, someone catch me up.”
John B looped his arm around his girlfriend’s shoulders. “JJ has a fat crush on Charlotte Walker - god, Charlie, she’s not even here dude -” he corrected himself at JJ’s glare, “- and he made a fool of himself at the ice cream place she works at but she’s clearly not into him.”
Pope shook his head. “You’re missing half the story, you didn’t see her drunk and hanging all over JJ at the party.” He put on a high-pitched voice as an impression. “Can I stay the night, JJ?” He dropped the voice, pointing at JJ. “And this fool thinks she asked him to be her boyfriend.”
JJ put the drink down, giving John B and Pope a dirty look through the whole retelling. “First of all, I’m right here, quit talking about me like I’m not. She did! I guess we’re dating now. Second of all, she’s hot, but I don’t have a ‘fat crush’ on her. She’s just cool.”
Kiara crossed her arms, doubting the story. “So you did hang out today?”
JJ nodded, drinking his beer. “Yeah, we had to establish the rules -” his eyes widened at his slip and he cut himself off with another swallow of beer.
Kiara and Sarah both jumped on that immediately. “What rules, JJ?” Sarah asked skeptically.
JJ glanced around, as if checking to make sure no one else heard, and sighed. “Fine. She wants me to pretend to be her boyfriend, just for the summer, so she can get back at Rafe for cheating on her and piss him off.”
Sarah frowned as John B and Pope began cracking up. “He cheated on her? I didn’t know that,” she said softly.
JJ nodded in confirmation and threw his bottle cap at Pope. “Shut up! I’m just helping her out!”
John B rolled his eyes. “You’re doomed, bro.”
JJ glared. “But you guys can’t tell a single soul. I mean it. I already broke the first damn rule by telling you, but you guys would have figured it out soon enough anyway.”
Kiara raised her hands in confusion. “How is that even going to work?”
JJ shrugged. “We go on dates in public, make out at parties? Easy.”
Pope nodded. “Uh huh. Sounds like all risk, no reward.”
JJ smirked. “Oh there’s reward, all right.”
All the Pogues groaned at that, Sarah throwing her pillow at JJ. John B and JJ argued back and forth for a bit until JJ saw Pope and Kiara shaking hands out of the corner of his eye. “Hey! What are you betting on?”
Pope grinned sheepishly. “I bet Kie $20 that you two will be dating for real by the end of the summer.”
Kiara shook her head. “Hell no. I know Charlie, she’s stubborn as hell.”
John B cocked his head. “By the end of summer? I give it a month.”
Sarah laughed and elbowed her boyfriend. “Just be smart about it, JJ? This just sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.”
Since she started dating John B back in high school, she had grown to be close like a sister to JJ. Although they were talking about her brother’s ex, she had seen the way he treated girls over the years and figured he deserved what was coming.
JJ nodded. “It’ll be fine, Cameron. I’ve got it handled.”
_______________________________________________________________________
Charlie texted him later in the week, early in the morning.
Charlie: want to get dinner tonight?
JJ: Sure is the wreck fine?
Charlie: I was thinking the country club? on me
JJ: are you asking me on a date, Walker?
Charlie: I guess I am
JJ: Do I have to wear a suit
Charlie: no, no, just like a polo. I can pick you up from your place with john b? at 6?
JJ: See you then
After the short text exchange, JJ frantically started going through his closet. “John B!” He called out, coming up empty-handed.
While he had gotten a few solid scholarships (one thanks to an essay carefully ‘edited’ - one might say plagiarized - from Pope) and made his way through college with a handful of part-time jobs to keep up financially, he never adapted his style to the typical frat boy attire, hating how Kook-like it was. Lucky for him, John B was a Sigma Nu at UNC and Sarah had molded her boyfriend’s style to fit a little bit more of her taste. (The bandanas stayed.)
“What?” He called back, walking into JJ’s room. “Dude, it looks like there was a hurricane in here.”
JJ tossed another rejected shirt onto his bed. “I need clothes, dude. I’m going on a date at the fuckin’ country club.”
John B laughed. “You’re in deep, JJ. Is this with Charlie?”
JJ nodded. “Yeah, and I’m sure we’ll see Rafe there, so I gotta look good. For her. You know.”
John B shrugged. “Sure. Come on.”
_______________________________________________________________________
Meanwhile, Charlie was completely unbothered at work, having sent off the text without a second thought. She told herself it was just a test, to see if this whole fake boyfriend thing would really work. But throughout the day, she couldn’t get her mind off the blond boy hovering over her, his necklace dangling over her chest, his hips getting closer...she shook her head to clear her thoughts as more customers entered the shop. By the end of her shift, only a half hour before she needed to pick JJ up, she had worked herself into a ball of nerves and could hardly concentrate.
She raced home, only ten miles over the speed limit, sprinted into the shower, and after hurriedly applying a tinted lip balm, mascara and eyeliner, she looked at her appearance in the mirror, wet hair and all, and frowned. She would have to drive with the windows down and hope that was enough to make her hair acceptably dry. Charlie pulled on a sundress and checked her watch, cursing as she realized she was already late.
JJ sat on the steps on the Chateau, anxiously bouncing his knee as he waited for Charlie. He checked his watch for the fourth time in ten minutes, then messed with his hair.
John B slapped at his hand, having tried to tame it for JJ. “Quit, you’re gonna screw it up! It’s fine, she’s coming.”
“I look like a fucking Kook,” JJ groaned, tugging at the collar of his polo. “And she’s late.” The sound of a car sounded in the distance, and JJ practically jumped up seeing her car round the corner.
John B clapped his friend on the shoulder. “You look good. You’ll be fine, JJ, it’s just a date.” He left him on the porch, then went inside to watch the interaction through the blinds in the living room.
Charlie smoothed out her dress and checked herself quickly in the car mirror, then got out and walked down the drive to meet JJ. “Hey, Maybank,” She smiled. “I’m so sorry I’m late, I mistimed work and then had to rush to get ready.”
He wiped his palms on his shorts and smiled back. “It’s okay, I wasn’t waiting around.” He went in to hug her as she went in for a kiss on the cheek and she bumped her nose awkwardly into his shoulder. “Oh - uh, okay, ready to go?”
She blushed in embarrassment and John B, sitting in the living room, slapped his palm to his forehead.
JJ laughed softly and nodded, walking out to the car with her. “I like your makeup like this. It didn’t really seem like you at the party.”
She shook her head and smiled, starting up the car. “That was the work of Grace and her eyeliner skills, I can hardly do it on my own.”
JJ tugged at his collar again. “Got it. Um, so your family, they’re members at the country club?”
“Well..not exactly. My grandparents are, so we have passes once a month if we want to eat or golf or whatever.”
He laughed. “So you’re like, half-Kook. Why do you work so often?”
Charlie shrugged. “I guess you could say that? I’m on scholarship at SC, but I needed a way to pay for Kappa. I get paid like a normal employee at the shop so I can stay in the sorority.” She paused. “My grandparents on my mom’s side aren’t doing the best, so. Most of the money goes there.”
JJ frowned slightly, putting his hand on top of hers on the gear. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to pry.”
She shook her head quickly and pulled up to the club. “It’s fine. You look really good, by the way, I didn’t tell you that.”
JJ beamed and walked around to get her car door, offering his hand.
“Wait.” Charlie surveyed his appearance first, then unbuttoned the top two buttons of his polo. She smiled and took his hand. “Much better. Hungry?”
He laughed as his stomach growled. “Starving.”
The two had a fairly uneventful dinner, save for Charlie spilling her half her glass of white wine all down the front of her dress with a well-timed joke from JJ and an extreme lack of hand-eye coordination on her part. He only laughed harder at this, offering her his napkin and teasing her about her flushed cheeks.
After she settled the check, ignoring arguments from JJ (and swatting away his hand when he pulled out his wallet), the two walked around the pathway by the golf course. Charlie took his hand, swinging it between the two of them. “Thank you for coming. It’s fun, hanging out with you.”
JJ smiled, bringing their intertwined hands up and kissing the back of hers. “Of course. But - not that I mind - but how exactly is this going to get back to Rafe? For your master plan, and all?”
She tilted her head toward the course, lowering her voice slightly. “Because he golfs on this course every Tuesday and Thursday with Topper and Kelce at 6:30.” Just on time, the three boys came into view to golf the next hole.
“Ah. Right. And dinner?” JJ questioned.
Charlie grinned. “You’re the one that said we needed to work on our chemistry, Maybank.”
He laughed, shaking his head. “You’re trouble, Charlie Walker.”
Charlie smiled and reached up on her toes, kissing his cheek. “Who, me? Never.”
After going first in the round, Rafe jogged over to Charlie on the sidewalk. “What are you doing here, Charlotte?”
JJ moved his arm protectively to wrap around her shoulders.
Charlie nodded at JJ. “We’re on a date.”
Rafe scoffed. “You? With him?” He jabbed his thumb toward JJ.
Charlie frowned and stepped slightly in front of JJ, her body pressed against his. “Don’t act so surprised, Rafe.”
Rafe rolled his eyes. “Whatever. You want to waste your time with trash, go ahead.”
At that JJ moved quickly to react, but Charlie turned and put her hand on his chest, looking up at him with pleading eyes.
“Don’t, JJ,” she murmured, before turning back to Rafe. “Fuck off, Rafe, don’t talk like that.”
Rafe sneered. “You know, Maybank, that’s not the only dirty thing she does with her mouth.”
With that, JJ jumped forward, grabbing a fistful of Rafe’s shirt. “Don’t you ever - ever - talk like that again about her. I know what you did, asshole.” He told him through gritted teeth.
Charlie quickly came up and wedged herself in between the two of them, facing Rafe, gently pushing JJ back. “JJ. Let’s go.”
Reluctantly, JJ let go of his shirt and stepped back - just as Rafe spit, directly onto Charlie’s face, though it was intended for JJ.
Without missing a beat, Charlie raised her fist and slammed it into Rafe’s face, so hard they could hear the crack of her hand connecting with his cheek. Her ring left an imprint and made a small slice under his eye.
“Fuck you.” She choked out, then stepped back and grabbed JJ’s hand as he stared at her in awe.
Rafe went down to his knees, pressing his hand to his cheek. “Fucking bitch,” he groaned out.
At the sound of sirens over the golf course loudspeaker, Charlie cursed under her breath. “Shit. We gotta go,” she said quickly, then started running.
JJ ran with her all the way back to the car, letting out a whoop along the way. She fumbled with the keys back at the car and JJ grabbed them from her, getting in the driver’s seat. “Just get in, Charlie!” He yelled, high off the adrenaline from the almost-fight.
Charlie barely made it into the passenger side before JJ threw the car in reverse and the tires squealed as they tore out of the parking lot, back toward the Chateau.
“Holy shit, are you okay? I’m gonna kill him.” JJ shook his head, glancing over and rubbing his thumb over her cheek.
Charlie let her head fall back into the headrest and cradled her fist in her other hand, tears welling up in her eyes. “I’ve never done that before.”
He let out a short laugh. “It didn’t seem like it. I didn’t know you had that in you.”
She mustered a small smile as JJ pulled up to the Chateau and parked. “This fucking hurts,” she whined.
He frowned, taking her hand and inspecting it. “You gotta punch with your thumb out, you might have broken it. We gotta teach you how to fight, baby.”
Charlie groaned, a few tears running down her cheeks. “I’m gonna be in so much fucking trouble with my grandparents.”
JJ winced. “Maybe. Let’s deal with this hand first, pretty girl.”
They both got out of the car. JJ held her face in his hands, wiping away her tears gently with his thumbs and gave her a small kiss on the forehead before bringing her into the Chateau. All the Pogues sat around, discussing how JJ’s date probably went - and they all fell silent once they saw the two.
Except Pope, who was facing away from the door and didn’t hear them walk in. “He’s obsessed with her, there’s no way -” he yelped as Kiara stepped on his foot to shut him up.
“Oh, uh, hey guys! Wait what’s wrong?” Pope asked.
Kiara noticed Charlie holding her fist and went to grab a bag of frozen peas for her without JJ even asking.
JJ cleared space on the couch for the two of them and sat them down, taking the peas from Kiara and wrapping it around Charlie’s hand. “This one here decided to channel Floyd Mayweather on the date,” he teased.
John B looked at the two of them, confused. “What happened, Charlie, are you okay?”
Charlie let out a sheepish laugh. “I, um, hit Rafe.”
JJ shook his head, grinning proudly. “Punched Rafe,” he corrected.
Kiara’s jaw dropped. “Holy shit.”
Charlie gasped as she tried to flex her fingers, tears welling up again.
JJ took her hand gently and moved it to his lap, holding the ice on it for her. “Keep it still, Charlie, you’re gonna hurt yourself more,” he admonished gently.
The other three Pogues exchanged not-so-subtle glances at JJ’s gentle nature. Charlie closed her eyes and gritted her teeth in pain, leaning her head into JJ’s shoulder.
Pope broke the silence, blurting out. “So are you two a thing?”
John B sighed as Kiara put her fingers to her temples, rubbing them. “Real subtle, Pope,” John B said.
Charlie laughed softly, lifting her head. “I mean. We’ve been hanging out.”
JJ’s face fell slightly and he shrugged, trying to brush it off. “No need to put labels on everything, Pope. Charlie, let’s go to my room, I think I have something that can help you more than the ice.”
Charlie nodded and got up, following him out of the room.
The second they heard JJ’s door click shut, John B and Kiara threw their pillows at Pope. “What the hell, Pope, we’re not supposed to know!” Kiara whispered.
Pope raised his hands in defense. “I thought I would help move things along! It’s been two weeks already!”
John B groaned, shaking his head. “This is why you’re a terrible wingman, Pope.”
