i think i was the first monkey to type it into a popular post (a reblog comment that blew up, and then there were other popular posts to dunk on twitter and it became a tentpole of our identity)... but it's a pretty obvious joke that i'm sure lots of people came up with independently, so i don't know how much credit i could really take.

but here's the weird thing... that "popular post" apparently disappeared??

i found a handful of reddit screenshots, but no sign of the post itself anywhere still on tumblr.

i went into my archive around that post id (late november 2020) in case the problem was a change in link url style or that op's username changed, but the post isn't there. i googled phrases from the post itself (both with site:tumblr and otherwise) and nothing.

i don't think i've ever seen a viral tumblr post disappear and take reblogs with it like that. does this happen all the time?

so who would do the first move, lane or benji?

benji!! it was really hard for him because he couldn't imagine how they will continue to work together after a failure (and something like this really happened so it was lane's turn to do something)

this was a little breakdown moment for benji because he had to torture a girl what became kind of a daughter for him (i call her 'thirteenth' like apostle and imagine her as pom klementieff. i can tell about her more in other post) and he refused what called into question his right to be a leader of syndicate. this is a standart procedure for every one who wants to become a part of syndicate's core, sort of a loyalty test, and benji decided what they must stop do this bc they have a truth serum now. so he had a first really bad row with solomon and had this thought again what he really doesn't deserve to be a leader. when solomon realised he can't hurt thirteenth either he went to calm benji down and this became a talk about their weaknesses.

"it seems, it's me who doesn't fit for the leadership anymore" solomon said after with a quiet chuckle, thus agreeing with benji's wish to stop the torturing tests. he had this kind of face, like he really believed what he said, and this hitted benji for the most.

"don't say that!" benji thought he grabbed lane's shoulders to be more convincing, but this moment he felt like ground is slipping from under his feet. "there's no way someone could be better than you. there will come the time when we'll need to step aside and let the syndicate to grow further with others in charge, and i would lie if i say i'm not scare of that. i don't want it to repeat the ancient macedonia's fate because i know nobody will care about syndicate more than you do. you are the syndicate, solomon, and it still alive just because of you. it changes, and so do you, and it's okay... for me, you are perfect."

and then benji tried to kiss him what did't go well (solomon trauma said hi) but it tooks just a couple of days for them to talk normally (benji was stressed and run away in berlin for a mission) so solomon explained everything and said what he feel the same, yay. they are such a dorks sometimes

i’ve seen a lot of posts talking about nimona’s queer messages which is great! but ive not seen as many posts talking analyzing how both ballister and ambrosius were changed to be asian, which is a shame because i genuinely think its one of the most important parts of the film! a huge part of it is a deconstruction of the model minority myth and respectability politics, both of which are big issues in the asian american community. both of them represent each side of the spectrum, with ambrosius expected to be superhuman with very little support and ballister being seen as less than human, no matter how hard he tries- a monster.

ambrosius (who is now east asian, like his voice actor eugene lee yang, who is korean with chinese and japanese ancestry), despite being in a seemingly powerful position as head of the knights and a descendant of gloreth, he isn’t really given the kind of support that this position needs- he’s constantly undermined and belittled by todd, the face of the other knights, and when asked about his emotional state by the director, represses his emotions rather than talk to her about his true feelings. this is very similar to how asian american students in schools aren’t given the support they need academically by teachers and administration, as the model minority myth leads to them being perceived as more intelligent and competent than their fellow students and therefore not needing support. he’s also held to a higher standard than any of the other knights, being immediately placed into a position of power despite just being knighted, again a reflection of the model minority myth, since asian americans are held to higher standards unfairly. despite being technically better off than ballister, he has no support, no friends, no way to seek help for his problems, and, just like ballister, is immediately thrown away the moment the director thinks he’s served his use.

ballister is now pakistani, like his voice actor riz ahmed (no, not like pedro pascal. where did this come from lol), and i’d go as far as to say that he is also, if not explicitly muslim, heavily muslim coded as well. he’s framed as a terrorist by the white, christian institution, and from then on, it doesn’t matter how good he tries to be- everyone else sees him as a monster. he’s also from a lower socioeconomic class than ambrosius and the rest of the knights- while this is initially used to frame him as a success story, after he’s framed, it’s used to cast suspicion on him. almost immediately he’s othered, with posters casting him as a foreign invader sent to destabilize the city, much in the same way that muslim immigrants are seen in real life. even when he tries to be peaceful and good, it’s always twisted so that he’s the monster of the story. while ambrosius is held to too high of a standard, ballister will never be enough for the institution to accept.

which is why both of their arcs culminate in them breaking out of the system, learning to accept what they’d been taught was monstrous, and leaving behind respectability. it’s a genuinely great commentary, and i can definitely see why riz ahmed and eugene lee yang were chosen for this, as they’ve both done activist work for their communities.

Hello friend! A friend of mine is doing a Stargate SG-1 rewatch and lamenting the slim pickings of fic on AO3. Do you know where she can find fic that perhaps is still on some old archive of yore? Or have any recs? She's mostly interested in Jack/Daniel and Jack/Sam. Ty!!

oh my. with all the love in the world to your friend visiting us from a very different fandom tax bracket than i have ever had the fortune to participate in (those two pairings have well over 6k fics each on ao3), i'll see what i can do!

most of vintage sg-1 fandom was wiped out by expired domains, struck-through livejournals, ff.net's porn ban, yahoo lists, etc. some pages are still preserved in the wayback machine for heliopolis, the massive het-and-gen archive, and area52, the slash counterpart, but with the search and directory functions pretty much toast, they're almost impossible to navigate.

fanlore has an old list of archives (including plenty of jack/daniel ones). some smaller archives might yield wayback paydirt, especially if they were hand-coded. samandjack.net is still alive!

and, hate to say it, this was peak era for ff.net and they have like 30k fics over there... but all the explicit fic is gone.

i recently learned some people are still doing het-reccers (user-submitted fanfic recommendations, LJ archive is here). i don't know if any slash equivalents are still around (and i haven't looked at this site for genuinely fifteen years, so i can't speak to the quality of recs).

some sam/jack recs of mine; some of these authors multi-ship:

nanda: her resolution series especially should not be missed and i can't stress that enough. smut and action. fics great fics across the board.

it's kind of difficult to express how popular Salr323's fics were (under a different name) back in the day. i'm told that archive servers would crash when she posted something new. low on smut, high on PINING. rec: it was admittedly 1 am but as i recall this one made me feel like i'd just seen the fanfiction mona lisa

there are quite a few multifandom wonders who cut their teeth in this fandom, including missparker (rec: a small crime)

this cassandra fraiser fic dealt me some damage: nobody dies tonight by isawet

someone who's still in touch with her please harass splash_the_cat for writing 99 sg-1 fics and then walking away without cracking 100. lots of fun little snacks in there including this one

What's your favorite dynamic when it comes to Lanedunn ? Like are they both genuinely sweet to each other, or is it like a push and pull kind of relationship that borders on toxic ?

first of all, THANK YOU ANON! love you too and hope you have a great time!!!

and when it comes to lanedunn, i really care about their wholesome and healthy dynamic. we all know what benji is canonically into ethan (thank to simon /s) and including my opinion about ethan this crush seems a little toxic for benji. he and solomon pass their relationship bottom in movies so it's growing up in my main story. more than anything i love about their dynamic what they really help each other to deal with their mental problems even if they do it unintentionally. this parallel between "lane tried to kill him twice" and "lane gave him a reason to live and kinda became one" sucks an air out of me every time. and benji did the same for solomon too - he took his hope what lane can change anything in this world when they stopped him im kashmir and then turned this hope into knowledge (they are able to change things together as they changed each other). they work on their mutual past a lot, both have a trust issues for many reasons (solomon generally never been in normal healthy relationships) but they slowly open because they are bonded with mutual intention which, they know, they believe equally hard

BUT of course my thoughts about them does not end with this main story. AUs are a blessing and there i can make my bad, cringy and even dark ideas come true. like, i'm into an idea where benji was originally a part of british intelligense with solomon and they were in love, but when solomon started a syndicate activity (well, terrorism) dunn tried to stop him and then escape, but lane made him a prisoner for years because he needs benji (this was inspired by 'inheritance' with pegg but i hate this film). or, maybe, an AU where benji is a cyber-terrorist with the riddler vibes whos into his opponents like ethan or solomon (because they are smart and he loves to play with them). sometimes he can help one to beat another and then change the side just for fun bc he's a chaotic jester bastard

boothill thinks it’s fun to play around with his synesthesia beacon. turn it to a million different pitches or inflects just to see what irritates you most. sometimes, he’ll even do his best to recreate the voices of your boss and coworkers to watch you jolt out of your skin. to him, it’s hilarious and a worthwhile endeavour.

but your favourite is when he keeps it closest to his voice. when he tunes it just right to sound like himself after he’s done messing around. you like it when he’s himself as he hums and sings along to different songs, his favourites to sing being ‘Tiffany Blews’ mindlessly, ‘Before He Cheats’ when he feels like being annoying, and ‘Something About You’ while he’s playing with your hair (you introduced him to bedroom pop one night to break his whole only country and rock mindset and it surprisingly grew on him).

he’ll wrap his arms around your waist and perch his head on your shoulder as he twirls a couple strands, “she looks just like a dream, the prettiest girl i’ve ever seen,” with his sweet southern accent and smile. it’s almost enough for you to forget that he’s a wanted man and stole the last piece of bread that morning… maybe next time, boothill.
