how to create good characterization naturally? The chemistry in between characters without seeming forced

Great character chemistry can turn a good story into one that readers can’t forget. It’s a spark that makes your characters’ relationships seem real and exciting. Let’s look at how to make your characters interact in a way that feels natural and keeps readers hooked from start to finish.

Behaviour

Have characters unconsciously mirror each other’s actions.

Include small acts of intimacy, like sharing inside jokes or personal anecdotes.

Show characters prioritising each other’s needs or sacrificing their interests for the other.

Develop unique habits that characters only exhibit around each other.

Use consistent, unique actions or quirks that reveal a character’s feelings.

Create scenarios where characters defend each other’s viewpoints or actions to outsiders.

Allow characters to show vulnerability around each other.

Have characters unintentionally adopt each other’s mannerisms or phrases over time.

Have your characters make an effort to engage in activities they don’t typically enjoy, just to be with the other person.

Show characters naturally falling into synchronised rhythms, like walking in step.

Interactions

Lace your dialogue with subtext.

Writing Scientist Characters

this post is mainly an excuse to post a certain list of lab supplies I've made for a friend and infodump about lab work. but feel free to use this as a little resource when writing characters who are scientists and/or lab nerds. who knows, maybe it'll be of use.

General thoughts

Many people think it's a stereotype that scientist or nerd characters talk using complex technical jargon. While that is true to an extent, there actually is some kind of lab jargon. It varies across different labs and fields, but one thing they have in common is that it seeks to simplify, not the other way around.

gelelectrophoresis becomes elpho

microbiology becomes mibi

deioninized water becomes aqua dist

biochemistry becomes BC

sodium hydroxide becomes NaOH

They will probably not call a glass of water "silicon dioxide and h2o".

...and more. feel free to get creative. If you're writing in any other language than English, you can throw in one or two anglicisms as well. Also, most scientists will never gatekeep their work, and in an opposite fashion, will not shut up about it unless you make them. And no, most chemists do not know the entire periodic table by heart, only the most relevant elements. (main groups and a few commonly used metals of the subgroups) When it comes to characters doing the lab work, keep in mind that there are a lot more people involved than the scientist themself. Most scientists are more occupied with paperwork and data analysis, it is the laboratory technicians and assistants that do most of the practical work. They often have more lab experience than the scientists themselves.

Things you can have your lab nerd character do instead of making random chemicals explode

writing a lab report (and losing their mind over excel)

degreasing the glass bevel stoppers

removing the permanent marker from beakers (labeling is important)

complaining about the lack of funding of [their field] research

cleaning glassware

preparing specimen for examination

googling the most basic equations for their report

checking if the glassware and utensil collections are complete

steal single use plastic pipettes from their lab

pirating expensive textbooks

A list of laboratory supplies and utensils you can have them work with

Laboratory general (chem + bio)

Erlenmayer flasks, beakers, precision scales (3 digits), glass rods, metal spoons/spatulas, screw on glass flasks (autoclave compatible) test tubes, stopcock grease, dispensers with sanitizer and hand cream, gas burners, heating plates, eppendorf pipettes, pipette tips, Peleus pipetting aids, squirting bottles, liquid and powder funnels, incubator/drying chamber, round watch glasses, magnet stirring plates.

if you've never seen or haven't gotten used to the way char assembles tools, devices, explosives, and chemical solutions while in the field, then it may be a scary and worrisome sight. there will be open flames, the use of wrong and/or unwieldy tools bc that's all she has on hand, makeshift personal protective equipment (sometimes), no timer save for the one in her head and her watch which may or may not be running slow or fast, she's eyeballing all the measurements, most of her knowledge seems to be a mash-up of slightly outdated encyclopedic info and lessons learnt from previous failures, and everything seems to held together by rust, old tape, and a prayer. but i promise that more often than not, things will turn out okay.

Chloroform you bugger

Hi fellow writers What some juicy juicy details about chloroform?  Chemical Name: Trichloromethane, Methylidyne trichloride Formula: CHCL3 Molecular Weight: 119,38 g/mol General Precautions: Do not eat, Do not place in eyes, avoid inhalation, preggos run, PPE advised

1. Chloroform is in fact a carcinogen so please don’t like test it on yourself to see how long it takes to knock someone out with it, you are asking to get cancer. 

2. Chloroform has shown significant evidence to harm buns in the oven so if you want a dramatic way for your character to find out they were pregnant but gasp lost the baby, just chloroform them. The exact harm ranges from death (of fetus) to growth deformities.

3. How quickly you pass out from it is like a whole science in and of itself, so keep this in mind. The bigger the person, the lower the concentration in the blood, the longer they take to pass out. The smaller the person the higher concentration so they go quicker. But it can be anywhere from 30 seconds to 30 minutes. Also the affects can last for a while so maybe the character is like “I’m fine!” and then is a goner. 

4. Chloroform causes skin irritation so could be like a dead give away or make sure the bad guys wear gloves. 

5. Excessive inhalation causes death so again DO NOT inhale it. 

6. It is said to have a sweet-smell, smile like a dry cleaners or ethanol so yeah I guess that helps. Chloroform does not have a distinct smell, so please don’t be like “I smelt the rag, it was chloroform” I’m a frecking biochemist (student) and I don’t think I could for sure tell you its Chloroform. From memory, it just smells like all gross ethanol chemicals.

Went to a workshop on how to write the literature rescue for my thesis and now my stress levels are through the roof. I already feel so behind.

We had a useless year phd student who has done, as far as I can tell, absolutely nothing for the last two years while also constantly increasing my workload by skipping out on her own admin commitments and dealing group meetings. As a result I’ve had to spend the last two months (where I should have been at home recording from covid) at work doing including and training for four new masters students and one new PhD student because it turns out she literally does not know anything about our field. She could not show an undergrad first year how to use our software to do an entry level task. She cannot answer questions like “what are you studying and how are you studying it?”

I’m very tired and I feel extremely behind because I’ve been doing this shit instead of my PhD, and I’m only just now starting to figure out exactly how much I should have already been doing.

I hate her and I’m so fucking glad she quit. Enjoy failing your second year milestone because you decided to spend two years fucking around and ignoring every single piece of actionable feedback we gave you.

The prospect of the integrated development of the world’s largest deposits of sedimentary oolitic iron ores of the West Siberian belt is examined.
