Jet-black Polyhedral Seal of The Western Wei General
This multi-faceted jet seal of the Western Wei dynasty, belonged to the famous General Dugu Xin (獨孤信). It has 8 edges and 26 sides: 18 square and 8 triangular ones. It is the ancient polyhedral seal with the largest number of facets.
Among them, 14 sides are engraved with inscriptions. The inscriptions range from one-character to five-character. The functionality is differentiated, including the use in official letters, orders, document labeling, etc.
The jet, a composite organic gem, from which the seal is carved, is known in China as “coal jade” (煤玉).
The total height of the object is 4.5 cm, the width is 4.35 cm, and the weight is 75.7 g.
The seal was accidentally discovered in 1981 by Song Qing, a student from Xunyang county (旬陽縣), Ankang, Shaanxi. While returning home from school, he picked up a weird object in the gravel on the roadside, which aroused his curiosity with its bizarre shape. Song Qing had no idea what it was. Having examined the inscriptions at home, he gave the find for examination to the local archaeological museum, where the artifact was considered not of particular cultural value.
The seal vegetated on the outskirts of the local exposition for another decade, until it was revealed and recognized by a prominent researcher Wang Hanzhang (王翰章) from the Xi'an Institute of Literature and History. On display in Shaanxi History Museum (陝西曆史博物館).

Snow Day Thursday
We are being hit by Winter Storm Elliott, so we will be closed for the day and very probably tomorrow as well. To reflect the snowy clime, we present a Chinese scroll painting entitled Qi Dakui's picture of snow in the deep mountains (imitating the brushwork of Li Tang [Xi Gu]) - 祁大夔深山雪霽圖(仿李唐(晞古)筆意, from our Tse-Tsung Chow Collection of Chinese Scrolls and Fan Paintings.
Qi Dakui (1921-1982), known by the pseudonym Xiao Xi Ju Shi, was born in Beijing and specialized in landscape painting. His father, Qi Kun, was also a renowned landscape painter during the beginning of Republic of China. This ink-wash style of painting is known as Shuimo. Here, Qi is emulating the style of the noted 11th-century Chinese painter Li Tang (c. 1050 – 1130).
There are five Chinese seals or chops. They read: 1) 祁 - Qi; 2) 小西 - Xiaoxi; 3) 伯龍 - Bolong; 4) 周策縱 - Zhou Cezong (i.e., Tse Tsung Chow); 5) 晴窗一日幾回春 - Seeing spring scences several times a day from sunny windows.

First lines of the Dao De Jing in the ancient Chinese Seal Script:
The Dao that can be trodden is not the enduring and unchanging Dao. The name that can be named is not the enduring and unchanging name. Having no name, it is the Originator of heaven and earth; having a name, it is the Mother of all things.

Thought I'd draw Kuroki from my Sifu fic! The first painting features her house from the arena levels, which is most definitely not a portal to the underworld loll (and it's not directly stated whether it is or isn't her home, but given the location and architecture/style, I've assumed it is XDD)
In the second painting, she's hanging out with MC - who is in turn hanging out with the Water talisman! I took Kuroki's parasol from the arena level with her house; I did a shoddy job at drawing it, so next time I'll try to make it look better ^^;;

One must wonder how Yuding Zhenren feels during the events of Lotus Lantern...
[ID: A monochrome purple comic. In the first panel is Yuding Zhenren from the shoulders up, resting his head on his hand while reclining and looking up with a cold, angry expression, saying "Yang Jian." In the second panel is Erlang Shen from the shoulders up, looking down at Yuding Zhenren with a detached expression, responding "Shifu." The third panel zooms out to show Yuding Zhenren reclining on a mat while looking up at Erlang Shen, who is standing a few feet away. Yuding Zhenren says, "My... How you've grown." Yuding Zhenren and Erlang Shen both cast reflections on the pond beside them. While Yuding Zhenren's reflection looks largely unchanged, where Erlang's reflection should be, are the image of him and his sister as kids, crying and kneeling in front of Yuding Zhenren. End ID]

“No.”
“What do you mean, ‘no’, Assassin?”
“I mean what I said.”
Kirei should be mad. Should feel ire, should feel slighted at the fact that his Servant, a mass of mana who donned flesh and blood like a costume and was bound to him, was defying him. And yet, he feels nothing. Not even exasperation as the red-haired man before him flipped through a magecraft text sitting on the table before them.
When Kirei summoned Assassin as his Servant, he would be lying if he stated he hadn't been he had been expecting dark cloaks and a masked face, like every other Assassin from the Grail Wars recorded before. Instead, he got something… loud and garish.
Something red.
Assassin was not a typical assassin and refused to give his name.
Red clothes, red hair, red makeup, and Chinese in origin… he couldn’t place them— but he knew he was not one of the many hashashin who had come before him.
Granted, Kirie's… grasp on Chinese Assassins was lacking. He could name a few who were important to history, but there was no way this one was any of them. Too flashy, too comfortable in a modern atmosphere, and he had laughed when Kirei asked if he was the famed Jing Ke or Yan Qing.
And rather loudly at that.
Assassin was something of a mystery, despite his loud appearance and actions. The Servant was much bolder than one would think an Assassin would be, actively moving about the Tohsaka house before Tokiomi summoned the Archer Gilgamesh. So much so that Rin had asked Kirei about the “Redheaded Mister” more than once because he would help Aoi with cooking and she liked his cooking.
Again, another weird point that tied back to that ease of comfort in a more modern world. Assassin easily navigated the kitchen stove and radio— and while he knew that Servants were granted knowledge of the Modern world from the Grail, it was still odd. The familiarity wasn't that of a man who knew in the sense of having been told, but one who moved with the sense of having used one before.
Nonetheless, the fact remained that Assassin was a mystery despite how much he interacted with ease and talked to the Tohsaka family and him. Kirei would've assumed that, because of that, the Servant would have no qualms, however. It wasn't as if the man got attached— had he?
“What you’re asking of me is something that is… distasteful,” Assassin continued, seemingly unaware or perhaps uncaring that Kirei was at a loss. “I may be an Assassin but I am no idiot, though you might be."
Dark eyes met his own, reflecting the candles that adorned the walls. He was deadly serious, Kirei realized. And again, he was startled at the sheer amount of nothing he felt. He should feel annoyed, at least a little bit.
Tokiomi’s plan was already falling apart.
“Are you not my Servant?” He found himself asking and Assassin snorted, closing the book with a snap.
“You might be my Master, Kotomine Kirei, but that’s in name only. I will consider your orders, and ruminate on them, but that is all. If I act or not is my choice and mine alone,” Assassin said simply, not looking at Kirei again as he set the book down. “Feel free to use your command seals, though I can assure you, there’s only so far that will take you in this war."

Chinese seals in history and lore
The tradition of seal cutting in China dates back to the time of Qin, which was usually considered as the time when the use of seals began.
Chinese seals have historically been a status attribute. However, given that late Taoist cosmology largely reproduces social patterns, the seals have also become a magical artifact. In any case, they symbolize one’s authority that extends either in the earthly hierarchy or in spirits’ realms. (more…)

i just think it’s fun to think of them as a sort of bloodline that you can trace through the years, following in the footsteps of their mentors, building upon decades of knowledge and skills
