who or what are your biggest inspirations for art direction?
oh gosh. lots of good picks. i feel like a lot of my sources of inspiration come from very odd niches LMAO
i think my biggest source of inspiration lately has been ggdg -- i read cucumber quest as it was releasing back in high school and i revisited it after finishing soul of sovereignty. gg's color direction and framing have always been big inspirations to me.
wrt aesthetic i feel like i've kind of frankensteined a few very strange sources of inspiration together LMAO
basin + stable ground (which. exists) both feature a lot of nature scenes + probably take a lot of inspiration from the ridiculous amount of late-70s-early-80s westerns i watched with family growing up? centennial comes to mind because that's the series i come back to for background studies but there are plenty of films that treat the environment as a character just as much as the human actors, which i enjoy a lot!
on the complete opposite hand i've also taken a lot of inspiration from album cover art and printmakers, especially jay ryan! he has a very specific style that i cant really put a name to other than a lot of repetitive detail that actually has the effect of drawing your eye to the quieter parts of the composition. his characters have a very distinct oddball-cuteness that contrasts well with his more realistic prop design that i kind of just want for myself LMAO

Time Spells
Time magic is a powerful but evocative storytelling device, and one the Pathfinder system does not delve into much; you more or less have Time Stop, Time Dragons, and nothing else. This is understandable, as playing with causality is hard to write and an order of magnitude harder to improv, but I do wish we had a little more of playing with time. So here's two of my spells that do just that!
Tumblr media
(Stargazer by FrostAlexis on Deviantart)
Amalia’s Temporal Displacement
School: Transmutation Level: Occultist 3, Sorcerer/Wizard 3, Witch 3 Casting Time: 1 Standard Action Components: V, S Target: One creature within range Range: Medium (100ft+10ft/level) Duration: 1 hour/level Saving Throw: Will Negates Spell Resistance: Yes You push the creature a few seconds backwards in time. They cannot act on their next turn, and cannot act the first turn of any combat they enter under the effect of this spell. Additionally, they gain a -5 penalty to reflex saves and cannot take attacks of opportunity.
Chronostutter
School: Transmutation Level: Sorcerer/Wizard 5, Witch 5 Casting Time: 1 Standard Action Components: V, S Target: One creature within range Range: Medium (100ft+10ft//level) Duration: Instantaneous Saving Throw: Will Negates Spell Resistance: Yes You twist the creature’s relation to the time stream, causing it to frequently stutter in and out of time. At the start of its turn or when it would take an attack of opportunity, it has a 50% chance to be unable to take any action, freezing in place. Additionally, if it would make a reflex save or dexterity check or dexterity-based skill check, it has a 50% chance to immediately fail that save or check.

I like how a few of the example burdens for NHP characters in the Legionnaire supplement would just be side effects of prolonged periods of Lich piloting, even for humans.
Chronosnarl is just. Something that you can normally do intentionally suddenly becoming unintentional. "Sorry, accidentally made a time loop again with soul vessel and chronostutter, lemme fix it."
Paracausality and infinite possibility are just. Requisites for piloting a Lich effectively, like with defender Lich builds. "Why are you getting into range of that enemy Balor? You're going to die." "Yeah, but then I won't be dead anymore and nobody else but the enemy will be, either."
Astride the veil and oneirognosis seem to literally just be the experience of piloting a Lich, if the flavor text of Stay of Execution is anything to go by.
Tumblr media
And I like how this is more or less nodded to with the section on DIDYMOS-class NHP cascades.
Tumblr media
"Yeah, even normal DIDYMOS-class NHPs are fucking bizarre. Pray they don't get weirder because you'll be playing 5D chess with them if they do."

The Time Stone {7}
Legendary Artifact — Infinity Stone
{t}: Each opponent puts a cards from their hand on top of their library. Scry 2, then draw a card. Activate this ability only any time you could cast a sorcery.
{X}, {t}: Put target nonland permanent into its owner’s library just beneath the top X cards of that library.
If The Time Stone would be put into a graveyard or exile from anywhere, reveal The Time Stone and shuffle it into its owner’s library instead.
____________________
The fourth of six Infinity Stones. This one’s a bit less simple. Drawing from the flavor of Chronostutter, this card makes your opponent wait for their plans to occur, whether it’s delaying their permanents a few turns or making them wait to draw the cards in their hand one at a time. The scry ability also lets you look into the future. I’m really not confident this card is balanced so critiques are very welcome

Hey Magic: The Gathering friends/followers, one of my favorite Magic artists, Seb McKinnon is offering exclusive playmats and prints on Kickstarter.  He’s trying to raise money for an independent film project, because he’s also a cinematographer and composer, basically the coolest guy ever.
This is the guy who brought us insane stuff like Debt to the Deathless:

I know I tagged “timecore” in a previous post as a bit of a joke, but honestly it would be rad if there was an aesthetic devoted to time travel and abstract time art and hourglass/spiral/clock iconography and shit, especially the overly complicated temporal shenanigans that can result
Like, Zero Escape meets 5d Chess with Multiverse Time Travel meets Doctor Who kinda logic, but with the abstract visual aesthetic of pieces like Chronostutter and stuff
Y’know?

Swarm, Time Flies (Monster)
Tumblr media
(art by DenisZhbankov on deviantart)
(This is a fun one- it started with the pun, but quickly I realized the potential for cosmic horror. Originally they were concieved as being inhumanoid, being intended as fat, spiky, botfly shaped creatures, but that was a bit hard to find art for. Feel free to use the original description if you like!)
CR17 LN Tiny Outsider Although they are called “time flies”, these creatures are far more humanoid than the small, harmless insects they’re named after. Enigmatic creatures native to the Plane of Time, they are almost always the first creatures to emerge when a rift to the plane is opened (most often through repeated uses of Time Stop). Many an unprepared wizard has been devoured by these deadly beasts after playing with forces beyond mortal ken.
Time flies' minds are completely alien, and evidently without mercy or compassion. Their primary focus is consumption of magical energy and temporal rifts, although time flies worked into a frenzy by particularly large rifts are generally a danger to any creature that draws near it.
Due to the enigmatic nature of the Plane of Time, the natural ecology of time flies (what they normally eat, how they behave in their natural habitat, and how they interact with other denizens of their plane) is a mystery. Some occultists suspect, however, that time flies are relatively weak within the Plane of Time- a terrifying prospect, as they are incredibly dangerous creatures.
Each creature that makes up this swarm is the size of a cat, with a blending of humanoid and insectile features. The beating of their wings produces a terrible thrumming noise.
Misc- CR17 LN Tiny Outsider (Lawful, Swarm) HD22 Init:+15 Senses: Perception:+10, All-Around Vision, Blindsight 60ft Stats- Str:14(+2) Dex:40(+15) Con:24(+7) Int:- Wis:31(+10) Cha:16(+3) BAB:+22/+17/+12/+7 Space:20ft Reach:0ft Defense- HP:275(22d10+154) AC:28 (+15 Dexterity, +3 Size) Fort:+16 Ref+27 Will:+22 CMD:47 Immunity: Death effects Special Defenses: Immune to Magic, Swarm Traits Offense- Swarm (22d8 plus distraction and Curse of Time) CMB+22: Speed:40ft, 60ft Fly (Good) Special Attacks: Curse of Time Spell-like Abilities-  Slow (DC16), Dimensional Anchor /at-will Time Stop, Plane Shift (Self only, to Plane of Time only) 1/day Special Qualities- Outside Time, Swarm Traits, Thrumming Ecology- Environment- Extraplanar (Plane of Time) Languages- None Organization- Mistake (2-4 Swarms) Treasure- None Special Abilities- Curse of Time (Su)- A creature dealt damage by a time fly’s swarm attack must make a will save with DC25 or immediately be cursed. They are permanently staggered, and age at a rate of one age category per day. This is a curse effect that can be removed with remove curse. Immune to Magic (Su)- Time flies are immune to spells that allow spell resistance, except for the following;
Slow deals 1d8 damage per caster level (maximum 20d8), will save for half.
Chronostutter and Amalia’s Temporal Displacement heals 10d6 damage.
Spells with the electricity descriptor affect them as normal.
Outside Time (Ex)- Time flies can always act during a Time Stop or similar effects. Thrumming- (Ex) Time flies produce a horrible buzzing noise. Living creatures that can hear within 120ft of a time fly swarm are sickened. Spells with verbal components within that aura require a DC25 concentration check to be cast.

Oh damn look at this magnificent piece of art. Absolutely gorgeous, undoubtedly one of the best pieces in modern history. Oh? It’s for a Magic the Gathering card? That’s wonderful! Certainly, they won’t make that card absolute dogshit-
