Finding Clarity

Clarity part 1

You don’t know how you knew it was her. You hear the door swing open followed by the ding of the bell that hangs above it. The next sound is unique. Deliberate and controlled steps that tread softly as if trying to not leave any footsteps. Of course it was her.

“Hi, Y/N? It’s Natasha.”

“Hi” you reply, “I thought that was you.”

“Oh!” she says sounding surprised. “I was waiting inside and saw you standing out here…” her voice drifts off. “Clint told me to look for someone who looked like a spy” she laughs, “and since you have the sunglasses on I knew it had to be you.”

You laugh awkwardly and wonder how much Clint has actually told her about you.

“Shall we head inside?” she asks and you nod.

“Alright” she adds guiding you in with a hand lightly against the small of your back. “I hope you don’t mind I took the liberty of ordering us wine.”

“Of course not” you quickly answer as she leads you in a dizzying pattern of lefts and rights until she stops and you feel the absence of her guiding hand behind you. The sound of a chair scraping across the floor tells you she’s pulled your chair away waiting for you to sit down. 

“Thank you” you blush before continuing softly, “so chivalrous”.

Of course she hears you.

“Hardly” she answers with a chuckle. 

“I don’t go on many dates so…” you cough nervously.

“And why’s that?” she asks.

You raise an eyebrow at her. Maybe Clint didn’t tell…

Well this was going to be interesting, you think to yourself.

“Well..” you take a deep breath and brace for impact, “not many people want to go out on date with a blind person.”

You remove the glasses from your face and smile imagining her face contort as a million and one emotions dance across it.

“Really puts a spin on the whole blind date thing, doesn’t it?” you smile a little.

You hear her swallow.

That’s one of the upsides of being blind. God seems to compensate the loss of one sense by increasing the others. For you, your sense of smell and sound is heightened.

Clint used to joke that you were like a blind hound dog on steroids. But you didn’t want to think about Clint right now. Right now you wanted to save Natasha the embarrassment. She seemed nice enough. She seems like she really didn't know.

What a shame. She really does sound nice.

You sigh softly. “I should just go” you say breaking the silence. 

You realise if you leave now you could tell anyone who might care to ask that your date just stood you up. Leaving early seemed like the best option, far better than having to sit through an awkward dinner with someone who didn’t want to be there.

“No!” Natasha finally manages reaching forward and taking hold of one of your hands. She stops you from leaving so you drop back down the inch or so into your seat.

Folks, if you are talking about or sharing anything about “native plants”, please mention *your* location and *where* the plants are native to, not only country-wise but environment-wise.

So many people are learning about rewilding, gathering, foraging and gardening for food in harmony with the environment entirely online. Making your information clear for those people takes you little effort and limits confusion and misinformation getting out there.

The internet isn’t only “not just America”; many nations contain different environments with materially different conditions.

I live in Scotland. Most of the gardening and foraging information I get in the UK is calibrated for the south of England, which is a really different environment from mine - spring can come up to a month later and the south is semi-arid, which Scotland is *not*.

These days I actually look at a lot of Danish and Swedish gardening advice because their environment is a lot closer to mine. And that’s within one small nation. The world is wide and full of incredible diversity.

I am seeing UK-based pages sharing information about “native lawns” which contain plants from arid areas of the US because there’s no specificity in the original post. A small amount of information in the post, even a few lines, about locations, environments, context and goals would prevent this sort of confusion and incorrect information from spreading.

A lot of people are really enthusiastic and ready to be engaged in gardening for food, rewilding, gardening in harmony with the environment, soil preservation etc, but confusion and feeling they can’t trust information sources can really kill that. Make it easy for people new to the movement where you can, please.

ID: some photos of my native rewilded lawn from Scotland, UK, containing buttercups with butterfly eggs on them, yellow rattle, a willow tree, wild orchids, and many different grasses, and my small garden pond upcycled from a Belfast Sink surrounded by wild grasses, ladies’ mantle and wild geraniums and with woundwort and pondweed growing in it. There is a short path mowed in the lawn to allow safe passage of mobility devices and a wooden bench sitting in the long grass. A somewhat overgrown gravel drive and a front door with three steps up to it can be seen. The photos were taken in early June 2023.

I don't have anyone to share this with, so here you go Tumblr.. I've been 51 days clean from weed.. It's not much, and it may not even seem like a big deal to anyone, but for me, it was crucial that I stopped. I needed to start dealing with my emotions rather than pushing them down. I also needed to be more focused on my work and projects, so I decided to do this. I'm an all-in-or-nothing kind of person, so when I decide to do something, I don't back down.
