OK, I agree with Clark and I know I shouldn't find this endearing! But Bruce is so pathetic, it's funny and kind of cute. He is going through the same shit he went through when Dick made the Titans: he is afraid of losing them. Cass isn't his daughter, he hasn't adopted her yet, but he sees her as his daughter, he wants her to be his daughter. But she is already old enough to not need him, and that terrifies him. And, if she gets a boyfriend, he will not see her anymore (in his mind). It's a bit like how he resented Kory when Dick dated her, and said it wouldn't last, because Dick was always with her, going to space with her, and so, away from him.

He is not good at letting his kids grow up. He loves them and he doesn't know how to show it, so he keeps it inside, and the idea they will leave and he didn't have the time to show his love is terrifying. Also, Bruce knows he is far from a healthy man or great to be around, so he thinks his kids will never want to be around him again.

bruce characterization is so hard because he really has been written all over the place. generally i try to think of him as a man who really does mean well, but whose drive for justice and unprocessed traumas can blind him to his shortcomings and lead to him inadvertently hurting his children. i also think that comics are a medium that doesn't usually lend itself well to character growth, because they to maintain a certain status quo to keep telling stories from, and so the bruce in my mind would honestly develop and learn from his mistakes a lot better than canon bruce actually does, because for someone who espouses the values he does, it makes no sense for him to completely stagnate, right. he's a puzzle you can put together in a lot of different ways and it's fascinating but also can be such a pain because of all the different books writing him in so many different ways, but characterizing him solely as an asshole is just boring and reductive imo...

...but all of that said i still think if martha kent ever found out how he talked to kon in sb94 #85 or in those issues of batgirl '00, she should be allowed to beat his ass with a pitchfork. yknow?

I wanna see Jimmy become the chief's favorite out of the three. He's the one actually taking pictures and who's smooth with the people he interviews. He's charismatic, thinks ahead, and pretty clever. They better start giving him the recognition he deserves bc Jimmy is my son and I love him.

I'm not minimizing what's there in his other relationships, but I will never stop being utterly baffled at how what the writers did with J and A-boy goes completely over so many people's heads.

There's these two takes in particular:

"Taylor would have made more sense as a companion for Andrew instead of John because Anthony was closest with Tanya." And

"Anne was nice enough, why did Anthony make Angela so irritating?"

Friend, please, I promise, you don't need to have first-hand knowledge of how common enmeshment and loyalty binds and all that can be between substance-dependent parents and their children (I don't), but thinking about it for two minutes will take you way further than "whelp dad drinks, guess everybody hates him yesterday today and forever." Certainly people are allowed to have whatever interpretation means the most to them etc but wow, way to trip over everything the writers put down here.
