Zoro: Watch this: Hey Luffy, are spiders insects?
Luffy: No, which is what a lot of people get wrong. Spiders belong to the class Arachnida while insects belong to Insecta. The reason being is because spiders’ head and thorax are not segmented like an insects, they’re fused. In fact, Arachnids belong to the group Arthropod, which do include insects but also crustaceans too.
Zoro: Okay. Now what year was Gol D. Roger executed?
Luffy: Uh, I dunno, 5?
Franky: Wow…
Zoro: Yep.

The Aasivarluit [Inuit mythology]!
Tumblr media
The oceans have fascinated humans for millennia. As such, it is no surprise that a great many cultures from around the world have their own stories about scary and dangerous creatures from beneath the waves. One such being is the ocean-spider, or Aasivarluit, a massive monster from Inuit mythology.
As the appellation ‘ocean-spider’ implies, the Aasivarluit resembles a spider, albeit an unnaturally large one. It is a dangerous, giant animal and it was known to prey on unsuspecting kayakers by waiting underneath the surface of the sea and then pouncing upwards when a suitable victim appeared. In the absence of human prey, the monster was known to hunt walruses and seals for sustenance.
It doesn’t appear to be a common creature in Inuit mythology, in fact, all references I could find only mention one single story about the Aasivarluit:
A man was kayaking near the coast of Nuuk, the capital of Greenland (although it was called Godthåb back then). Suddenly he saw a massive object beneath the waves, which confused him greatly because he was familiar with this location and he knew that there was no shoal nearby. He then remembered stories about giant aquatic spiders, and quickly deduced that this must be the thing that suddenly appeared beneath his kayak. Indeed, he looked down into the water and saw a giant eye.
But the man was a skilled kayaker and he managed to get away safely. It is said that a less experienced kayaker would certainly have perished in his situation.
The idea of a giant oceanic spider that eats people might have originated as a cautionary tale (as in, don’t venture too far from the coast or the giant spider will eat you). While stories about giant animals are not uncommon in Inuit culture, the Aasivarluit is certainly a rather strange monster, considering that there are no marine spiders in real life (although there are freshwater spiders). Technically, sea spiders do exist, but they are spiders in name only: they belong to the class Pycnogonida whereas real spiders are Arachnida. They only share a vague resemblance (though there are some really pretty and weird sea spiders out there, I recommend googling them).

Micro whipscorpions, order Palpigradi, class Arachnida
Palpigrades or micro whipscorpions are an order of arachnids found in wet tropical and subtropical soils throughout the world. They measure no more than 3mm in length and do not have eyes. Little is known about their behavior, but they are thought to be mainly predators of other minuscule arthropods, though one species was found to feed on cyanobacteria.

Six-spotted Fishing Spider (Dolomedes triton)
Class: Arachnida
Distribution: Found throughout the United States and southern Canada; fairly rare in the Rockies and Great Plains.
Habitat: Semi-aquatic; live in wetlands, such as ponds, lake shores and slow-moving streams. Found in the littoral zone of freshwater bodies, among vegetation, rocks and other structures near water.
Diet: Polyphagous carnivore and active predator; feeds on aquatic insects, tadpoles, frogs and small fish.
Description: The six-spotted fishing spider is a large, predatory spider which can be found skittering along the surface of slow-moving water. This species is diurnal, and will wait patiently until stimulated by prey, either by eyesight or by feeling the rippling of water, which it quickly subdues with a venomous bite. The six-spotted fishing spider is one of the few spiders known to prey on vertebrates, and can capture fish up to five times its size. Unlike the most well-known spiders, these fishing spiders do not build webs; they instead use their silk to build safety lines as they traverse the water, as well as to build sperm webs and nuptial gifts.
As an anti-predatory response, the six-spotted fishing spider is able to dive underwater, grabbing submerged substrate in order to remain under the water. It encloses itself within an air capsule, allowing it to re-emerge completely dry. These spiders have been observed remaining submerged for up to 90 minutes at a time!
These spiders are not generally dangerous to humans due to their skittish nature, as they prefer to escape rather than confront large predators. Still, they may deliver a painful, yet ultimately harmless, bite if mishandled, which can be compared to the sting of a bee or wasp.

Bite Back!
Link to part 2- https://www.tumblr.com/mylittlediarys-stuff/736028843342807040/bite-back-part-2?source=share
Okay, let’s do this for the first time.
My name is Amara Wanye. I'm 15 and for three wonderful days, I have been the one and only spider person. So, as you can imagine, I don't have an official hero name yet.
But to understand my story, we need to go back three weeks.
“Okay class, for today's tour of S.T.A.R. labs make sure you stay with your groups.” the teacher announced.
S.T.A.R. labs were one of the many things Amara loved, as she knew almost everything there was to know about S.T.A.R. labs. However, there was one thing she really wanted to do; visit the Arachnida lab thing they had here. According to the 5-hour-long research she did the previous night, the laboratory had a whole lot of recent developments- chiefly deciding to study spiders- even making artificial ones.
I wonder if they made-
“Amara!” She was broken from her thoughts by yelling her name.
“We're leaving to start the tour.” A student announced.
“Oh, thank you.” She felt a bit embarrassed as her whole group stared at her, waiting for her to catch up.
Once the tour began she had to stop herself from asking too many questions. In the beginning, she asked questions about every detail and she could tell her classmates didn’t want to hear her voice all day so she toned it down.
She took many photos that she thought would run out of storage.
“Next up is our new Arachnida department,” The tour guide opened up these big brown browns to reach the department and it was beautiful in Amara's eyes. The smell of this department was different from all the others, it gave it a more relaxed and happy vibe. It also has pops of green everywhere. “This department also works with Oscorp Labs.”
“Why are the lab stations green?” A random student asked.
“I was just getting to that, you can notice that most of the testing areas are green due to the fact that it’s one of their favorite colors.”
It’s amazing even the light here has a different hue!
“You guys have five minutes to explore the lab and take photos before we group up to discuss the lab in more detail.” Amara took off the moment she heard “explore the lab”.
If I ignore my fear that the spider will bite me and I die, they look so cool.
She looked over to the tarantulas, they were kinda big but looked oddly soft. She didn’t want to get too close but close enough to take good photos. As she got out her phone to take a photo she felt a pinch on her neck. Almost like something just bit her.
“What the'' She slapped her neck. Just to find some brown dead thing on her hand, probably a bug.
Is this a bug? In a room of spiders O MY GOSH DID A SPIDER BIT ME!
“Miss, are you okay?” The tour guide asked.
“Yes, I am," Amara replied, lifting her hair to show her neck. "I think something… bit me on my neck."
“There is nothing there Miss.”
“But there was a-”
“It’s nothing you probably just a bit scarce. I know we're in a room filled with spiders. You are not the first person to get a bit jumpy here.”
She is probably right.

Question. What is up with daddy long legs cause everytime i look at one its either got 8 or 6 legs. What the fuck am i looking at???
harvestmen are arachnids, so they ought to all have 8 legs.
I actually thought they didn't have 8 legs, but I was confused. I just knew they aren't spiders. They're in Class Arachnida along with spiders (and scorpions, and ticks, and mites, etc.), but harvestmen are not in Order Araneae.
Unless you're referring to crane flies, which are insects (6 legs), but I'd have thought you'd mention the wings in that case. (I've never called crane flies daddy longlegs, but wikipedia says some people do)
Maybe some species have smaller specialized legs for some reason? Couldn't find anything confirming or denying this on the Opiliones page.
Theory #2: their legs are often very thin so they may get damaged easily, maybe you've just seen a lot of harvestmen with missing legs?

I won't lie. I got distracted watching a video of a guy who's tent was being torn apart by leaf cutter ants and began researching the logistics of that.
BUT I'M BACK with an ask ONCE AGAIN. And it's bugged themed. For definitely unrelated reasons.
Your characters gain the ability to control one species of bug (specific species, not all of ants or all of wasps), and they have as much time as they need to research what bug they'd like. What qualifies as a bug in this case is subjective. Anything in class insecta is fair game but arachnida is cool too.
First of all, that documentary sounds fascinating and I can totally appreciate going down a research rabbithole like that :D
Second, I love this ask, let's dive right in!!
Rae: Copidosoma floridanum - a type of cosmopolitan wasp. The main reason she'd choose it is for it being cosmopolitan, she can utilize this power regardless of her travels.
Robin: Reticulitermes flavipes - the eastern subterranean termite. She'd pretty much exclusively use this power to keep them away from the operahouse and its wooden sets (same with her parents' house, since it's pretty old)
Madison: Pachydiplax longipennis - the blue dasher dragonfly. Technically any dragonfly would suffice, but blue dashers are common where she lives so she wouldn't have trouble finding them. Either way - semiaquatic, predatory, and edible in a pinch.
Ophelia: Camponotus pennsylvanicus - the black carpenter ant. Am I stealing this from Ant-Man? Maybe. But she'd find a way to use them in her lab, for sure.
Gia: Apis mellifera - the Western honey bee. Having an infinite supply of pollinators is a surefire way to keep her shop, and her clover, as healthy as possible.
Jasper: Melolontha vulgaris - the May beetle. Oil from their larvae is sometimes used as a topical treatment for scratches, abrasions, and rheumatism in traditional medicine - it's not quite Neosporin, but it'll work in a pinch
Kestrel: Eristalis tenax - the common drone fly. Another cosmopolitan species, good for use on their travels, but small and unassuming enough that could be good for some quiet espionage.
Katherine: Anthrenus scrophulariae - the common carpet beetle. They're one of the four common species of beetles that cause damage to textiles and other artifacts in museums, so that's a 25% lower chance that they'll get damaged on her watch
Quinn: Pepsis grossa - a North American tarantula hawk moth. Its sting is said to be incredibly painful and is among the highest ranked on the Schmidt pain index - she'd go with the bullet ant, but she's a lot less likely to find those in the California desert.
Eris: Paraponera clavata - there's the bullet ant. Eris just wants to cause as much pain as possible, when they need to. What kind of bug could double as a weapon to be used in battle? Bullet ant.
Nikoletta: Periplaneta americana - the American cockroach. It's gross, and she honestly hates roaches (and half of this power would just be used keeping them away from her home), but they're so common in big cities like New Orleans that she's always got a few around to control. It's a similar strategy to Cleo and her rats, really.
Jimmy: Drosophilia melanogaster - fruit flies. Look, here's his logic: they were first used in genetics back in 1910, and they were a big deal, and he works with scientists now too... maybe they'd have use for this power of his? (also credit to the one scientific name I did not have to look up beforehand because I had it memorized lol)
Vivienne: Aedes aegypti - the yellow fever mosquito. Disease is... kind of a big deal in her time, there aren't a lot of cures for these horrific ailments, and while Vivienne itself is largely immune by being a siren, she doesn't want Wojchek or his crew stricken ill by some tiny little bug.
Spider: Sigh... I'd been so careful about strictly insects this whole time, but it would be wrong to give him anything but a spider. Hogna carolinensis - the wolf spider, and the largest wolf spider species to be found in America. He just thinks it would be cool to freak people out by having this massive wolf spider crawl out of his mouth or something. He's... an odd one, that for sure.

[cracks back]
so @artastic-friend gave me some ideas
Tumblr media
Since Music Man is canonically not made by Fazbear Entertainment, what if the company that made her made all sorts of other arachnid robots - Music Man being the trendsetter and personifying the entirety of the Arachnida class and having a bunch of other robots representing the other orders? Instead of a pizzeria or an animatronic band like Fazbear, instead they come from a robotics company that does have a restaurant but it's much less marketed for children and is a more adult-friendly place and has a bar and stuff. I got most of my inspo from Shinjuku's Robot Restaurant, partially because of the doctored screenshot that DJMM comes from japan but also because this looks dope and fits the rave vibe that DJMM portrays
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The robots do serve the purpose enterainment but they do have a practical purposes like cleaning, bartending, cooking, construction and transport, security, providing medical help and even hunting down pests like rats and roaches. The showcases are not just for entertainment but are also showcases for potential buyers, as all the robots are on auction, but they are all extremely expensive at the moment on account of their versatility, size, and intelligence, as the animatronics, after showcases, actually freely roam the restaurant and directly talk to people and are general party hosts.
DJMM is obvi Aranae, but in the lore for this I imagine he not only has the most resemblance to Music Man, but he's also second oldest, which in this case meant he was made before they became extremely valuable, both of these factors leading to him being auctioned to Fazbear Entertainment. The company that created him is currently working on a new DJMM, which has led to him being very resentful, not just because he's replaced but also there's this copy of him that's going to be having the time of his life at a crazy robot rave restaurant everyday. I'd be pissed too if I was still stuck in the Chuck E Cheese That's Famous For Child Murder And Also Killed My Mom💔
I need to draw all 12 extant orders but I do have these 3 - the represantative for Uropygi, the order where vinegaroons are from, who i made cat-themed mostly because of a joke I made that these are the last catboys of spider nation on account of their tail. I don't have a name for the Uropygi bot, though I did have the ideas of Catman and Confetti Cat. I feel like I can do better. He actually takes up the job of DJMM as a janitor and a party host, but as of currently there is still no DJ. Yet.
Tumblr media
There is also the representative for Amblypygi, the mime and the "Dazzle King." They feature no speakers anywhere on their body and is completely silent, and both mimes and actually helps with construction projects out of the restaurant!
peep the grabber
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And we have Schizomida, or the kinglets/split kings. (the "kings" refer to the "scorpionlike" arachnids and "queens" refer to the "spiderlike" arachnids. therefore DJMM is a qween💅)
In the case of this au(?) the windups were not prototypes but were made with the purpose of being, like, robot pikmin, and Fazbear Entertainment bought all of those guys out, so Spider Robotics (no idea if thats gonna be the name) made the kinglets, who are in much higher quantity but have devolved in quality, as there are mainly so many of them because they keep breaking and are not very smart. They provide surveillance, alert staff of any emergencies or any information that needs to be known, and... also hunt down and kill pests. No mousetraps, they send a horde of Kinglets on mice. It's brutal.
Tumblr media
also there will be a Bighand redesign soon, the idea for which provided by @artastic-friend. I wanted to draw it but i didn't have time but stay tuned 😈

I just know Io and Wednesday are going to have such a fun dynamic 🤭🤭
small snippet from my ch8 draft for you 😎❤️ (tho it might change, idk yet - that's a problem for future-me)
A pout comes across the child’s face. “Mr. Stingy isn’t a doll. He’s a scorpion. Did you know scorpions are ah-ratsch-needs?” “You mean arachnids—” “Ah-ratsch-needs belong to the Ah-ratsch-need-ah class.” “Arachnida—” “And the ah-ratsch-need-ah class is in the art-toh-pod class.” “They are called arthropods—” “This is his stinger and can make you go ouchy. But don’t worry, Mr. Stingy won’t sting you. Mommy made his tail soft so he can’t hurt anyone by accident.” “Your mother? And where is—” “Did you know that scorpions have something called egg-so-skeletons? It’s super hard so it’s—” “Where is your mother?” Wednesday demands, the flames of her torch blazing in warning. Her patience has depleted fully, feeling the onset of a headache coming from the horrendous cacoepy. The mention of their mother reminds Wednesday that this child is not her responsibility. Thankfully.

Crossing the Webs
Chapter 1 - The Other One Inside Me
If there's something strange in your neighborhood, who you gonna call? The Spider-Men?
“Date, September 3, 1984. Time, 4:34 PM Eastern Standard. Location, Columbia University. This is Dr. Egon Spengler performing the first documented experiment regarding the reaction of spider DNA affected by a dose of radiation with human DNA.”
He picks up the syringe, checking to make sure everything was in place; no air bubbles to be seen, the injection site was already sanitized, and the elastic band was tight enough that the vein was swelling just enough for the needle. “For the past few months, ten species of the Arachnida class were subjected to small doses of radiation. Of those ten species, five of them were exposed to a higher concentration of protonic energy, one of which is currently being used for today’s experiment. As I assumed, there are a lack of volunteers, so I will be self-experimenting with a 0.25-mL dose of Ummidia audouini ’s radioactive blood, half of the dose for the regular influenza vaccine. If I do not see a result by the two-week mark, I will attempt another test with the same condition with another 0.25-mL dose.” He slowly inserted the needle in, making sure that the blood was a darker red to indicate he had pierced the vein and loosened the elastic band a tad before gently pushing the plunger all the way. “The injection is complete and any further observations will be recorded in my notebook, thus concluding today’s recording.” He presses the stop button and disposes of the needle, wiping away the pulling spot of blood, and putting a swab of cotton over it and wrapping it tight with the ace bandage he had precut. After feeding the spiders and making sure they were safe and secured, Egon grabs his notebook and pens as he goes to another lab. He had been meaning to make a few adjustments to the PKE meter, hopefully calibrating it so that it would be able to pick up enough psychokinetic energy to detect any apparitions roaming around this world. It must have only been around half an hour when Egon started to feel a headache coming on; he tried to ignore it but the harder he tried, the more it came back harder than before. Had it only been a headache he could have soldiered on, but then he felt himself heating up…..a lot. He checked his temperature, 103°F, definitely a fever.
As he started to head toward his shared dorm with Ray and Peter, he could feel his vision starting to blur and his clothes sticking to him because of how much he was sweating. He sat down for a moment to rest and recorded the signs and symptoms before stumbling his way onto the dorm room.
X
Ray yawned as he was cleaning up the table; Peter had gone out on a date so he had treated himself to some Chinese takeout and some television, but before he could turn it on he heard the door open. “Oh, hey Pete, how was your-?” Ray stood up straight at the sight of Egon looking feverish and sluggish. It even looked like he was sweating excessively through his clothes. “Holy shit!” Ray put a hand on Egon’s forehead and violently jerked it back. “You’re burning up a lot. Did you catch some bug in the lab?” The fact that Egon didn’t respond at all was alarming to him, he just seemed to be looking pass him. “I’ll heat up some soup. We should have some medicine to help your fever, do you need help getting changed?”
It seemed that was what seemed to snap Egon out of his stupor. “Yes….” Shit, his voice sounded like sandpaper. “Ok, don’t talk too much, can’t have you straining your throat anymore.” Egon headed to his room and carefully removed his clothing and folded them neatly on his bed. Next to his bed, a full-length mirror was mounted and while Egon rarely ever used it, the moment he laid his eyes on it, he froze.
The first thing he noted was that there was…something that was growing in his inner forearms, and another thing beginning to form over his serratus posterior muscles.
The second thing was how much more gaunt he was, how his ribs became so much more obvious even from a distance.
The third and most concerning thing he noticed was how…hungry he was. Well, it wasn’t much hunger as it was that he was starving for something soft? Yes, but also smooth. Then he landed on the word; liquified. Spiders liquify their prey before consuming them…
He put on his pajamas, notably the long-sleeved ones, although it did little to hide his thin frame, and wobbled to the kitchen table where a piping hot bowl of chicken noodle was placed in front of him. He skipped the spoon and just slurped the whole thing from the bowl, coughing a bit as some of the soup went down the wrong windpipe. “Geez Egie, slow down a bit,” He stopped at the edge of the table with the two tablets for Egon’s fever, “....you didn’t eat lunch I guess?” Ray asked as he held them out for him.
He then watched as Egon silently nodded and swallowed the medicine dry before going back to his room to try to get some semblance of sleep.
Hopefully, Egie gets well soon, never saw him this sick since that time he stayed up in the lab for three days straight…..
X
Running…that was the last thing Egon remembered doing before he woke up with a start. He looked around, he was still in his room, but it was clearly night. He looked at the clock next to him, 3:24 AM.
The medication must have knocked me out…
While he tried to go back to sleep, he couldn't stop thinking about running…but what was he running from…? He couldn't remember…or maybe he didn't want to remember…
He stared at the ceiling for a while, contemplating. Maybe the injection gave hallucinations and whatever thing was growing in his arms was just something his brain conjured up. Except… Except when he ran his fingers along his forearm it was still there, squishy like a blister, minus the searing pain he was familiar with, but then......he felt it.
He felt his flexors, pronator, and palmaris muscles shifting beneath his skin, making room for whatever that...thing was...but it didn't stop there...
The next thing that happened felt as if something was ripping under the serratus posterior muscles, yet Egon didn't feel like he was bleeding.
With each stretch, he swore he could hear his muscle fibers tearing and repairing itself as they tried to make more room.
Now suddenly everything was blurry, too blurry!
Egon wanted to scream for help but it felt like his voice was stolen away as his cheeks stretched more than humanly possible to accommodate for new protrusions that he knew were coming out from the sides of his mouth.
He laid there, tears slowly falling down his face, helpless as he faced the horrors that were flowing in his blood.

Scorpions are one of the most fascinating creatures that have more than four legs, in my opinion. They have always fascinated me, so much so I even had one as a pet for a long while. This is an older post that I had worked on, and while I no longer have Pinsir as a pet, this post will briefly mention him as though he is still around.
Lately It has seemed as though he will be going through his first molt, and I have been contemplating preserving his exoskeleton to use either as a spell component or an altar piece. This renewed interest inspired me to so some research on how one could incorporate scorpions and scorpion symbolism into their craft.
And what I found...was a whole bunch of nothing.
Tumblr media
The information available online was so minimal, I have decided to put together my own correspondences and associations for scorpions and their magical uses. The best way to go about this is to first understand scorpions themselves, as well as their role in the animal kingdom.
Scorpions belong to the Arachnida class of the phylum Arthropoda. As arachnids they have eight legs much like spiders who share the same class, but their most distinctive features are their grasping claws and segmented, stinger tipped tail. They are predatory creatures, which use their speed, stinger, and pincers to catch unwary prey.
Scorpions are resilient and have evolved and existed on this planet for the past 430 million years. They can survive in a wide range of climates and are found on nearly every major continent (excluding Antarctica). The only climates scorpions cannot survive in are permanently snow-capped mountain tops, and boreal ecosystems like the tundra. Otherwise they can be found anywhere from mountainous caves and intertidal zones, to tropical forests and arid deserts.

Many scorpions are known to glow a bright blue-green when exposed to UV light like that produced by a blacklight. Many scientists use special hand-held blacklights when working on field studies at night and attempting to locate scorpions. Their fluorescence may have a large role in the scorpions ability to detect light around them.
Most scorpions reproduce sexually, and the females carry newly born scorplings on her back to keep them safe until their first moult. This is a completely different behavior from the majority of species in the Arachnida class. Generally, creatures from this class do not care for their young.

As I mentioned before, I didn't find much in the way of information online, so these correspondences are of my personal associations. To me, scorpions are master's of lying in wait for their prey, and expanding the minimal amount of energy necessary to catch only what they need to survive. The stay hidden most of the time and only reveal themselves when it is an absolute necessity.
In my opinion, these traits make scorpion symbolism perfect for things like curses, hexes, jinxes, etc. Especially those used in defensive situations, or those that require quick and decisive action against the target.
Scorpion Spirit Animal/Totem
If a scorpion spirit has revealed itself to you as a totem, it shows you are a person of strength with the ability to inspire those around you. When you need solitude you can be very protective of it, possibly to the point of pushing others away. You do not fear being vulnerable in front of others, and your way with words can have a sharp, stinging effect to them. However your overall charisma will guide you through any conflicts that may arise.
Scorpions as a Spirit Guide
Scorpions are very defensive spirit guides which can be called upon to protect you from various threats. The scorpion guide will always guard your back and keep an eye on your blind spots to help make you more aware of your surroundings or incoming threats. In this way the scorpion will guide and empower you to find a new sense of personal freedom and gain the ability to protect yourself at all times. Hello
I hope you are having a pleasant day.
I have been interested in animal taxonomy for a while now and would like to spend more time working on it. Do you have any recommendations on sources, et cetera, that could guide me on how to start?
(I cannot figure out how to ask this anonymously, hope that is bot some sort of Tumblr faux pas)
Regards
I'm afraid I can't really recommend much as I don't own any books on the subject and I've learned the taxonomy I do know just by IDing bugs regularly and having to know the classes, orders, families, and genera that I see commonly. I primarily use iNaturalist for IDing and they organize everything there taxonomically which is hugely helpful.
Although even if there are good books on the subject, it's literally constantly changing, so they may become outdated very quickly.
I think if you want to get into it, it may be helpful to narrow your area of interest to at least a class (Insecta, Arachnida, Mammalia, Reptilia, etc) just so it's not such a huge undertaking.
Beyond that, maybe some of my followers have recommendations for resources?
P.S. - You can't ask anonymously because I have anonymous asks disabled to avoid rude messages. But this certainly wasn't any sort of faux pas!
