Okay, this is definitely clickbait, but it’s like the exact opposite of how clickbait usually works, and I kind of appreciate that.

Saw a video today that looked like more clickbait about the supposed downfall of Critical Role, and I thought it was going to be like, “and in conclusion, that major character death was planned, actually, as a publicity stunt because Bells Hells aren’t as popular as Mighty Nein and Vox Machina were.”

BUT it was actually, “hey, so you can’t measure their current Twitch stream views against the numbers they made before they split the stream between Twitch and YouTube, nor can you measure it against their views during Covid, because duh, Covid. Plus with it being pre recorded, there’s less of a reason to catch the livestream, when you can just wait and watch the VOD. They’re fine, don’t listen to clickbait weirdos.”

I was pleasantly surprised.

Let's be fair, most of those Shocking Media Analysis videos on YouTube aren't simply describing the explicit text of the media they purport to analyse. They're also describing it incorrectly.

Last week, an AI-generated image of an explosion near the Pentagon went viral on social media, briefly spooking the stock market. According the Bloomberg, the S&P 500 dipped by 0.3% in the minutes before the image was debunked, making the incident “possibly the first instance of an AI-generated image moving the market.”

What went unmentioned was that creating such an image has been trivial for decades. The AI technology that really made stocks flutter was the social media algorithms that showed the image to so many, so fast.
