Closed Captions:
The video begins with a man driving as text appears “Homemade flowers for the girl”
Cutting off some of his beginning dialogue, he explains that he stopped by the grocery store for flowers as multiple videos cut in of the flowers he’s describing.
He picked up one bundle of closed, open, and normal flowers before driving home to assemble.
“Alright let me get comfortable real quick. I’m just gonna have my Mr. Rogers moment here and get a little comfy” he states as he rolls up his sleeves and begins removing the flower bundles from their plastic encasings.
“Now it’s time to prep the flowers. Listen mc you can’t give it to her in the plastic wrap. Remember you’re giving her a gift, not a task.”
As he’s shown cutting off the thorns and removing and bruised petals, he continues, “And don’t wait for a holiday to do this-“
“Leaves and buds in water will quickly rot” appears on screen as he removes them.
“Just because flowers are the best kind of flowers.
Oh and here’s a tip. Save a flower for yourself, right? And when that flower dies, that’s when you know it’s time to get her new flowers.”
Throwing his tied tie over his shoulder he grabs a vase off screen.
“Alright, now grab yourself a vase, Florlab sent me this one, thank you. Measure the stem (of the flower) to the base of the vase and the greenery will help the flowers stay in place.”
More text, “cut at an angle” appears as he does so and begins placing the flowers, “And now just have fun! Use your creativity and design, express yourself through flowers and then boom. This is for you, and this is for her” he finishes off, panning to a beautifully decorated white vase with green decoration leaves and pink and white flowers

Crunchyroll fails to meet industry standards for Closed Captioning
Tumblr media
In 2017, Sony Pictures Entertainment bought a 95% majority share of Funimation Entertainment for $143 million. Four years later, Sony completed its acquisition of Crunchyroll for $1.175 billion, bringing the two companies back together after their partnership break in 2018. The decision cements Crunchyroll-qua-Sony’s place as the largest monopoly in the English-language anime streaming space.
The merger has included the gradual sunsetting of Funimation’s streaming site; all titles that aired after Spring 2022 will be uploaded exclusively to Crunchyroll; while any Funimation-exclusive titles have either been transferred over to Crunchyroll or will leave streaming, and dubbing projects are now carried out under the Crunchyroll umbrella. All of this makes one of the biggest issues with the site even more glaring: with a few exceptions, Crunchyroll does not offer closed captioning for its English dubs.

One of the worst sins of subtitles is when closed captions cover the words translated in a movie/show with (speaks foreign language)

Y'all remember when YouTube had community made captions? Yeah me too
Why the fuck did they get rid of it. One of the reasons was apparently that it wasn't used much. What the fuck. That's the shittiest reason I've ever heard in my goddamn life
The automated captions have gotten okay, but they have issues with the same shit I have issues with
I have severe hearing loss. It's difficult to hear anything with my hearing aids off. Why the FUCK would you get rid of my accessibility because it wasn't used much. That's not accessibility works, morons
That being said, huge shoutout to creators who DO add captions to their videos. I love y'all.

none of you know what closed captions are 😭😭😭 please stop calling things closed captions when they’re really open captions. if you’re not sure, just call them captions. just saw a video where each line of open captions started with ‘cc:’… COME ON
closed captions are made separately to the video and can be toggled on or off, moved on the screen, changed font or colour, translated, etc
open captions are part of the video and can’t be adjusted in any way
common examples:
tiktoks have open captions. idk if tiktok has a closed caption system, but if it does i’ve never seen it (but i don’t use tiktok so i might have just not heard about it)
the youtube caption system is closed captions, but a lot of people put open captions on their videos and then don’t bother with closed captions because they think open captions are accessible. they’re not.
video descriptions that you type under a video aren’t even captions.
sure, open captions are generally better than nothing, but stop saying something is closed-captioned when it’s not

Closed Captions:
This caption ended up being really long, so I apologize for the divider.
Taking place in a classroom, this video is from a show called Midnight Mass. Numerous parents are seated in small desks for children and the topic is about how some kids came home with bibles that were handed out. A conversation is cut off as this clip begins.
(What is missing from the clip: the Teacher begins, “I understand given your religious affiliation, you might find the fact that your son is interested in the Bible offensive-“)
“Not at all” the parent, played by Rahul Kohli, cuts off.
The teacher continues, “I suppose, but I would say that if he’s interested in Jesus, why not allow him to learn a little about it?”
He cuts her off once more, “That’s so not the issue and thank you for this opportunity to clarify, uh he knows all about Jesus.”
She cuts him off this time, “Imagine not quite all.”
He ignores her and continues, “Muslims believe that Jesus is a prophet of God and that the Angel, the Bible, was revealed to him as the Torah was revealed to Moses before that. See, we- we love Jesus and we love the message that was revealed to him.”
“Well, I suppose we learn something new everyday, don’t we?” the teacher announces, trying to stop the conversation there.
“But we also believe after the time of Jesus. Thanks to the interference of men, there are deviations of Christianity. People altered the message, Priests, Popes, Kings. That’s why there’s so so many versions of the Bible.”
“People got in there, made their changes-“ “I don’t think this is relevant.” The teacher cuts in again.
“We do though believe that the Bible contains some of the original word of God.”
“That’s very generous, isn’t it?” The teacher begins again to try and shut down the conversation.
He begins again, “But we also believe that God revealed the Quran as the final message. Never to be altered, to reasset the original revelations of the previous prophets.”
She curtly stops him, “I don’t think that this is the place to discuss where our beliefs about scripture might divert.”
Remaining calm, he reiterates, “Exactly.”
Pausing to look around for a moment before continuing, “There it is. That’s the issue. And that’s why I think some of the people in this room including myself are a little concerned. See Muslims encourage everyone to seek knowledge. So I am more than comfortable with my son studying a Bible. Thrilled actually. I’ve done it myself.”
After pausing to look around the room once more he continues, “But where I think there’s an issue is that this is a public school. That’s the thing. And I think what’s concerning some of us is not the Bible itself. But that it was handed out. Distributed to the kids here. I just ask you to consider how you’d feel if you sent your child to a public school-“
“Sure” the teacher sighs, shaking her head.
“And they came home with a copy of the Quran. Asking about the (Prophet Mohammad). You’d feel it was an issue. If I went around handing out copies of the Quran to the children on this island purely in the interest of the pursuit of knowledge. Well, I’d expect you to chase me out of town Miss King.”
And the video is cut off and ends there.
