End of Year Fic Meme

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you’d expected? More. There were a lot of days where I just couldn’t concentrate, but also rare amazing days of complete focus, and days of putting one word after another, and somehow it all evened out.

What’s your own favourite story of the year? Anthology (Clint/Natasha; M) because writing it felt like high wire walking without a net; I had no idea if I was going to manage it, somehow I did, and it was a fun kind of exhilarating. Runners up are First of May (Clint/Natasha; T) because circus fic and Bird Of The Drowned City (Clint/Natasha; T) because I enjoyed coming up with the mermaid!AU worldbuilding; I’d love to develop that more in another fic.

Did you take any writing risks this year? I wrote a fanfic in free verse poetry for a remix exchange (Anthology). I mean, I knew @cloud--atlas liked free verse poetry novels, but poetry isn’t something I’m aware of her ever asking for in fanfic requests and I while scribble poetry sometimes to let off steam it’s not something I share. I had no idea how it was going to turn out and I couldn’t even ask my usual beta reader if it was any good, because that’s @cloud--atlas ! I kept thinking I could always change my mind and write something else instead if I didn’t feel confident about it, but as the deadline crept closer and closer I had to take a deep breath and commit. I don’t think I’ve ever been so relieved that someone liked a fanfic gift I’ve written 😂 

Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the new year? The same as every year - to post more words (and therefore more finished fanfic) on AO3 than the year before.

Most popular story of the year? Bird Of The Drowned City by kudos; Anthology by bookmarks and comment threads. 

Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion: I don’t think any of mine aren’t appreciated because they all got comments :D I think I might have done And A Happy New Year (Clint/Natasha/Bucky; T) a disservice in terms of reaching people by posting it on New Year’s Eve, but posting a New Year’s Eve fic on New Year’s Eve made me happy *grins*. 

Most fun story to write: Last Friday Night (Avengers team; T) - a no pressure promptathon short fic with Nat, Clint, Steve, Bucky, and Sam having fun in a bar brawl. 

Most unintentionally telling story: Hmm, First of May. I tried to keep 2020 out of my fics, because fandom is an escape for me, but the more I look at that one, the more I think my 2020 feelings crept into it. I mean, it’s about life being shitty and yet having rare bright moments with people who care that you try to hold on to? And wanting a chance to try again and be bettter and make people smile? ...yeah, the more I look at it I’m not sure my brain was even being subtle. Oh, self.

Biggest disappointment: In writing? I guess that I signed up to Marvel Big Bang as an author and I had to drop out, because long fics are a challenge to me at the best of times and the throught of not completing by the deadline and leaving an artist hanging was too much. But dropping out was a small disappointment to avoid a larger one and a good choice for me :)

Biggest surprise: In September Trust Exercise (Nick Fury & Goose; T) which I wrote in 2019 reached 1000 kudos. I’d just been happy that a recent Avengers fic finally beat one of my Harry Potter fics from 2008 for kudos, but then it kept geting more. What is with the internet and cats 😆  

Outside of writing, I ended up doing a fanvid trailer for @alphaflyer and @hawksandspiders​‘s Marvel Big Bang fic Be Seeing You (Clint/Natasha; T). I did NOT see myself ever doing another fanvid after how long it took me the first time, and certainly not for a fusion with a fandom I knew nothing about (The Prisoner 1967), and yet somehow it just happened. Probably because their delight in fandom and creativity was infectious <3

And looking at everyone else who has done this meme, seeing @cloud--atlas‘s word count for the year, plus the Be Seeing You word count, and there was another fic by @hawksandspiders... yikes, how many words did I beta read?!

@closetedboggart it's because it's gender neutral and technically correct but also deeply disquieting at the same time. Also I really like the implication that specific genital configurations are just an accessory for performing gender, but are not intrinsically linked to any gender identity.

Yesss! It’s been so good! I’m really worried about how viable it is on a premium channel, though :X

I feel like it has at least a decent shot a doing well though, HBO gets its revenue through subscriptions, rather than advertising, so there's no advertisers threatening to pull their money when John Oliver really pisses off someone big, and the network's focus is on an all-around lineup of shows to bring in revenue, rather than the amount of viewers during advertising timeslots might help it stick around even if the viewership is less than it should be.
