The Music of The Musketeers
Part One: Title Sequence and Closing Credits
[I know, I know... I'm terribly late to this party (only managed to watch in Dec 2022 despite having known about it since 2014) but thanks for allowing me to share this with you! 😃]
♩ ♪ ♫ ♬ ♭ ♮ ♯
There's a whole lot to love about The Musketeers, especially the cast 💕, but the MUSIC is definitely near the top of my list. It was a treat to get a title sequence from this epic series as they are pretty rare these days.
♩ ♪ ♫ ♬ ♭ ♮ ♯
Series One Ryan Gage having no direct corresponding image is minor compared to Hugo Speer, whose sequence only consists of a silhouette with a shiny fleur-de-lis. I know Treville all but formed the Musketeers here but c'mon! 🤦‍♀️
Also, check out Athos' smirk around 0:15, lol.
youtube
Series Two Still no corresponding sequence for Ryan Gage but hey, at least we can now see Hugo Speer. Progress!
youtube
Series Three At last! Everyone has (more or less) their own sequence, although Aramis popping out from behind Athos at Tom Burke's credit cracks me up each time. Perhaps it's keeping with how Tom is introduced throughout the series but I prefer to think of it as a validation of what we all know, that Athos and Aramis are #two sides of the same coin! 😆
I also liked how they sequenced Matthew McNulty's credit here. And they replaced the silhouette of the three (and not even the original three musketeers) raising their swords/rapiers together with one showing all four of the boys. About time! #the inseparables
This video has the closing credits as well, but I'm just here for the music. 😬
youtube
Final Thoughts How great is that (most?) British (Merlin, Miss Scarlet and the Duke) and Canadian (Murdoch Mysteries, Hudson & Rex) series still have title sequences? Oh, have a listen, if you haven't yet, to the title theme from Star Trek: Picard Season One. #pretty good

Episode 466: Four o'clock in the afternoon
At the end of Friday’s episode, the well-meaning Vicki Winters was driving her car and bickering irritably with her passenger, Barnabas Collins the vampire. Barnabas wants to elope with her, which she doesn’t object to doing. But first she insists on running an errand in his old neighborhood, the deserted cemetery north of town, and he hates that idea. A pedestrian wandered into the middle of…

I set up my playlists like I would for beats in a tv show, cause that's just how my brain works for my characters. There's been a mix of songs I recently put together and made me come up with a story/action sequence that peaked with some high intensity songs.
And then it came to this song.
I close my eyes and see Eld suffering the melancholy that I put all my characters through following something tragic that he had to do. The songs before it made think him confronting his wayward apprentice and having to take him out. Doing so just makes him think of how he disappeared and how things might have been different he just hadn't left.
But then, he hitches his horse and heads to the harbor.
There's work to be done.

I must say, I like the way Willow is shifting the closing credits music for each episode, and especially the way they seem to be using modern covers of classic rock for so many of them
I will confess I wasn’t familiar with “Guess Who’s Back” in episode one, but I sat up with the cover “Hurdy Gurdy Man” in episode two.    When “Enter Sandman” came on in episode three I finally realized this was going to be a thing.
It’s late tonight, but tomorrow I’m planning to look at the catalogues for the artists they selected.  It’s always great to be exposed to new bands and musicians like this.

Major shout-out to my youngest for being my model for several of the prompts this month (“frost,” “chains,” and today’s “rush”), as well as much thanks for granting permission for me to also use some pre-existing photographs (“saddle” and “shallow”). While I’m at it (apparently this is the credits page), I should also thank my oldest - both for the use of her photo for “toad,” and the use of other pre-existing images (“wander,” “spicey,” and “shallow”); my husband, for use of “dodge” and “sparkle,” and my dad for “massive.” You can see my own face in “scratchy” and my hand in “sparkle.”
As for those who were unable to give consent - either because they are animals, or humans that are too famous to know who I am but have put their faces out there for public use (I do hope I’ve succeeded at being respectful): Michael Sheen was the inspiration and model for “angel,” while David and Georgia Tennant appeared in “demon.” Our cat Asha features in “scratchy” and “beast,” and our late chicken Copper in “plump.” The spiders (“spiders,” “remove”) and the snake (“dangerous”) have no names that I’m aware of, nor does the toad in “toad.”
The kid in “dream” doesn’t exist, that whole room just came out of my head.
It’s been a fun journey. I’ll be back one more time tomorrow for “fire,” then I guess I’ll see you next year, with whatever prompts we’ve got to work with then.

The Music of The Musketeers
Part Two: The Musketeers' Theme
♩ ♪ ♫ ♬ ♭ ♮ ♯
Series One There is no official Series One soundtrack, so I'm eternally grateful to the fans who took the time to extract parts of the score from various episodes. The pieces aren't perfect but they're still great, and beats the alternative of having absolutely no soundtrack for the season.
The unreleased music below, Fight at the Garrison, is from Episode 1 Friends and Enemies, where d’Artagnan confronts Athos (and meets his future brothers!) at the garrison. The theme starts around 0:59, after the classic scene of the boys crossing ⚔️ at the table.

[And before that, if you listen hard enough, you can hear Athos say, "Don't make me kill you over a mistake." 😉]

♩ ♪ ♫ ♬ ♭ ♮ ♯
Series Two and Three The show got a new hero theme after Paul Englishby took over from Murray Gold as series composer. Variations of The Musketeers can be heard in most of the compositions for Series Two and Three, from exhilarating (They Are Here Somewhere, Refugees) to inspiring (The Ravine, Series Three Finale) to poignant (Training the Village, We Refuse to Die).
Would have loved for the theme to be longer but hey, it's an official release (yay!) and there's always the replay button. [It also makes a great ring tone.]
Enjoy!

♩ ♪ ♫ ♬ ♭ ♮ ♯
Fun Fact Both finales of Series Two (2x10 Trial and Punishment) and Three (3x10 We are the Garrison) are the only episodes to use a variation of Paul Englishby's The Musketeers for the closing credits instead of Murray Gold's opening theme.

Episode 442: For the love of God, Montresor!
When vampire Barnabas Collins rose from his grave to prey upon the living in April 1967, he was a bleak, frightening presence. As the show went on, we saw him spend a great deal of time ruminating on murders he might like to commit, but he had few opportunities to act on those thoughts. By November, when well-meaning governess Vicki came unstuck in time and wound up in the year 1795, Barnabas had…
