Most of my knowledge is in the Black Ops universe, but from the question it sounds like the different Modern Warfare games might be what's causing the confusion here.
Modern Warfare (2007) was also known as Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare when it was released. It's best to ignore the Call of Duty 4 part of it. That was just part of the Call of Duty game naming conventions at the time.
Anyway, Modern Warfare (2007), Modern Warfare 2 (2009) Modern Warefare 3 (2011) aka the original MW trilogy are their own self-contained story.
The new Modern Warfare (2019) and Modern Warfare II (2022) are a reboot of the original series. So they contain characters from the original: Ghost, Soap, Price, Gaz, Shephard, Nikolai etc (but their backstories may have been changed or updated). The story is different though it shares some similarities to the original (which I won't mention here because of spoilers).
You don't have to play the original trilogy to understand the new games.
The other major story in CoD is Black Ops. Historically Modern Warfare and Black Ops have taken place in different timelines.
The story of Black Ops technically begins in Call of Duty: World At War (2008) as it sets up some of the backstory of one of the characters. But you don't have to play World at War to play Black Ops.
Black Ops (2010) and Black Ops 2 (2012) are their own story. Technically this is continued in Black Ops 4, but since there was no official campaign in Black Ops 4, only cutscenes, most Blops fans prefer to pretend it doesn't exist (also, the story is ughhhhhhh).
Then there is Black Ops 3 (2015), which is set in the future and is somewhat connected to the first two games. I don't want to talk too much about it because I haven't played it (it doesn't involve the major players of Black Ops 1&2, so I'm not as interested. I may play it someday).
Finally, to round everything out, we have Black Ops Cold War (2020), which is a sequel to the original Black Ops. And as far as we know at the moment takes place between Black Ops and Black Ops 2. You can also pick up and play Cold War without playing the first Black Ops game and not miss much (though I do love the first Black Ops game so much and there are a couple of spoilers in CW for Black Ops).
Now here's where things get confusing with that storyline. In Cold War they introduced characters who appeared in the original Modern Warfare trilogy. So there are rumors that they may be trying to merge the Black Ops and Modern Warfare universes. However, if that's the case it could negate Black Ops 2 and given how damn good Black Ops 2 is, all I can politely say is I'll be super disappointed if that's the case.
Advanced Warfare, Ghosts, Infinite Warfare, Vanguard (am I forgetting one?) are at the moment stand-alone stories.
Can someone pls explain cod releases to me bc I’m confused I’m sorry if I sound dumb🥲 What I’m not understanding is like how are there multiple games with the same name but different release dates? Is it the same game & they just like made the graphics better or something? Or are they all different games? Also is there a chronological order to play them in/watch gameplays in? Or do u just do it in order of release? Which also links to my question of are the stories like connect? Like do u have to play one to understand another? Or are they all different? Thank you😭
#i dunno what to tag this as#play black ops!#😆#god the fact that I wrote all of this out of my head#except for the dates I had to look those up#the hyperfixation is real
