One interesting thing about Coleman and his status as a former wizard is that he, by definition, cannot fully be without magic. Sure, he can choose to not use his born abilities (which weaken to near impossibility to use again if not being practiced) but there is still magic in him. In fact...

Coleman used to be able to control the dead!!!

I have a whole doc about the different types and rarities of magic in this world but the basics is that life/death magic is categorized as uncommon. Coleman was born in a family of wizards whose powers often controlled water or the state of it, so having Coleman born with different powers was something his parents could only dream about.

Unfortunately, after Coleman took an interest in Monstrology (or the lack thereof at the time), he said he wanted to quit being a wizard. His parents were distraught, almost disowned him. Electra, his older sister, defended him from his family and convinced them to let the budding researcher live his own life.

By the time Coleman moved to Echino Mesa, his powers have basically bottled up inside and manifested in a different way. See, instead of becoming a necromancer, Coleman was able to see the dead, specifically ghosts. Not all the time, but it wasn't voluntary either. When there was a strong presence or if that ghost wanted to be known to him, Cole would be able to perceive that ghost for a certain amount of time.

Any wizard that gives up magic often find themselves having some sort of perception alteration that would relate to their former special power. This doesn't happen all the time, but it is a common side effect to not practicing their abilities!

... and unfortunately for Coleman he had the pleasure of an uncomfortable conversation with one of the more notable victims of the Cataclysm :) !!

Today's Sunday Portrait features Coleman Burdain!

Coleman was born a wizard in an old town, whose name is lost to time. He is the young brother of Electra, as well as Maverick's late great granduncle. In the 1800s, he stopped using magic altogether to pursue something greater- Monstrology.

At the time, this emerging branch of science was not very popular and severely underfunded, as many monstrologists tended to go missing while researching certain monsters. Coleman stood out as he was the first to document almost all monsters (as well as discovering a new creature). His approach was more humanistic and passive, unlike researchers before him.

Coleman moved to Echino Mesa after finding out that there was a bigger instance of that creature he found in the wilderness. He coined the name for his discovery- Sculk- after hearing the locals of Calicle Way (an old and legendary Wizard town) calling it that. It was his biggest life goal to understand how Sculk worked, what disturbs it, what it needs.

While he was famous for his discovery of Sculk, as well as being considered the grandfather of monstrology, his private life is less well known. At some point, he was married. Nobody really knew that it was with Samson, a strange man who had been roaming around Echino Mesa for a while.

Coleman died around the 2000s, but his legacy lives on in the present day. Monstrology is a well-known branch of science now, sculk is now recognizable to anyone whose work or livelihood involves deep caves. Copies of his books have stopped printing after his death, and the current Head Wizard of the Damgo Archipelago has sent his apprentice along with the High Wizard of Turtle Haven to search any for copies in Echino Mesa.

Today's Sunday Portrait features Electra Burdain!

The older sister of Coleman Burdain and late great grandmother of Maverick Burdain, she is one of the founders of the Damgo Archipelago and the first Head Wizard of Turtle Haven. She was born a wizard in a town lost to time before having to flee during the peak of the Honey Society's oppression. Her family's patron animal is the glow squid. After establishing Turtle Haven, she traveled around the ocean where the archipelago floats above and established ties with Astoria. She was also a feared captain during the beginning of her Head Wizard days before she settled down in her later years.

Electra was skilled in hydromancy, a form of divination that is passed down in her family. She offered readings to her people and tourists, which became popular overseas. It's partially the reason why Turtle Haven is such a popular travel destination out of the other islands in the archipelago. She was also skilled in hydrokinesis, also passed down in her family.

After her death, she became one of the few people to ascend to godhood. Electra is presently known as the goddess of the sea and marine life. Every year during a festival, she makes her presence known in Turtle Haven as a giant glowing kraken which swims around slowly for about an hour before disappearing into the dark sea. Legend says that if she doesn't appear for that festival, it means that the seas will be rougher for the subsequent year.

Today's Sunday Portrait features Raven Piedra!

Raven is a blazeborn from the Nether! She lived there until she was of age to explore by herself, as blazes and blazeborns tend to stick in groups. She landed in Floralbourne and accidentally reactivated a ruined portal and was greeted by an unwelcoming town.

Thanks to Ophelia, she made a home in the overworld in a small ravine, where she farms nether wart. Though a bit of a loner, she loves to be with Ophelia and has a small amount of friends, including Prisma. Because she's a blazeborn, she helps provide rods to Ophelia for her potions, shedding them at least once a week.

Turns out this is the last of the beekeepers (as far as the main ones go), since Raven was dragged into becoming a Beekeeper by Ophelia (not that she doesn't mind). She's pretty good at beekeeping, though she doesn't help maintain the royal tree for fear of accidentally setting it on fire. What she usually does is help guard the kingdom outside of the castle walls for any trouble (and maybe to write a couple of lines of graffiti heheheh)

Raven doesn't go home to the Nether too often, but she sometimes misses home on bad days (like when it rains too hard or if the weather is too cold for her).
