Story #17: The Days Of Our Lives

I think a group of 3 friends is a good size. You know, it’s not too little, like just two people who don’t get a break from each other, and it’s not too much, like 6 people, who could tire each other out. Three is just perfect. For chilling. For going on a trip. For a bachelor party for one of the guys.

Summer of 2011 saw the same three friends from our GB Road story land up in Goa in the month of July to have fun on a pre-wedding bachelors only trip. Heavily inspired by Dil Chahta Hai and The Hangover, we were sure of having the greatest adventure of our lives in those 4 days.

Surprise, surprise! Things didn’t quite turn out to be how we’d imagined.

I was travelling from Bangalore, where I was anyway going through one of the worst phases of my life. The other two friends came from Delhi. I didn’t have a lot of money back then so I decided to take a bus. It was cheap and it went overnight. Perfect for a chap like me.

I left work and went straight to the bus stop. If you know Bangalore then you know that it just keeps raining in Bangalore through the year. So that particular evening wasn’t any different. While waiting for the bus, I was walking around, smoking, maybe getting a bite to eat and got a little wet. Nothing to worry. I wasn’t drenched or any such.

Finally the bus arrived and we left for Goa. I slept in the bus peacefully though it was awfully cold inside. I reached in the morning and made my way to the hotel which was located in South Goa. I was waiting outside the hotel and having some beer at a local shop while waiting for my friends to also reach. They had reached a day earlier and were staying in North Goa so they were on their way in a rented car.

I was loving this second trip of mine to Goa and I couldn’t wait to get the party started.

We had a nice beach resort sort of a place which was kind of empty. It was the monsoon season and there’s not a lot of tourist influx in Goa during that time. The shacks are shut and so are half the hotels and restaurants. But it’s a nice feeling. Goa is quite pleasant and green. Unlike our trip.

As soon as we checked in, we headed to the pool. Not that we were pro swimmers or some such, we just wanted to start chilling with some beer. And we did exactly that. We retired to our rooms after that, rested for a bit, and then got ready for an exciting evening out. We took the car and drove around. Finally, we decided to stop at a restaurant quite close to the hotel as it was one of the few ones which was still open.

We started drinking and eating good food and had a great night. I remember getting quite high that night. After our meal we all thought it would be a great idea to check out the beach which was like 2 minutes from our place. So we walked towards it and I’m having the time of my life. We reach the beach and it’s all dark and there’s not a soul in sight and it’s high tide.

Perfect setting for something crazy to happen, right? Chill. Nothing crazy happened that night. Yes, I did try to convince my friends to enter the water just a little bit to get the feel of the beach but I’m glad they were able to convince me otherwise.

We got back to our rooms and we slept. And then I woke up.

I woke up in the morning with a real bad headache. So much so that I was feeling sick. I thought it must be the booze and this was just a really bad hangover. But I soon realised that it was much worse. I started feeling hot and realised I had a fever. My throat was gone and I was fucked.

I knew my trip was over. It was a full blown viral with a bad fever and a sore throat. I was feeling weak and couldn’t move around much. And this was just the second day of the greatest trip of our lives. I couldn’t let this happen.

Being young and stupid (stupidity has always been a constant in my life), I decided to brave through this and figure out a way to enjoy this trip. I couldn’t let it go to waste. So we got ready and went out with our business as usual. We stopped at a cafe. I tried having a beer but couldn’t even finish a single pint. Alarm bells rang and I told my friends that we had to visit a doctor. We couldn’t find a single doctor around us so we just went to the chemist and got some Paracetamol and Combiflam.

And thus began the most toxic trip that I’ve even been on. I took a tab of each of these medicines every 3-4 four hours. They would start showing effect in 30 minutes and I would feel better and start drinking beer and then the effect would wear off in 3-4 hours and I’d repeat the cycle again. So I was on this trip on my own trip of 8 tablets a day just so that I could continue drinking.

Yes, I know it was stupid and dangerous and I’d probably not do it again. But, like I had mentioned, I didn’t really care much about my life given the kind of phase I was going through.

Even today, I can’t believe sometimes that I survived that trip. Yes, a lot of adventures did take place during that so-called ‘bachelor trip’ of ours but some things are better left unspoken.

I think my adult age stupidity was at peak during this time but there’s still 4 more stories to decide and figure out if I can top this or not.
