It has often been said that "you should care about [group/issue x, y, or z] because they'll come for you next," and that can be an effective appeal.
But this is not solidarity.
Solidarity is being there for each other because we recognize the fragility and vulnerability in our shared humanity and the importance and validity of our diverse struggles. We all have needs sometimes, some more existential and urgent than others.
We find strength, comfort, love, and safety in each other. That is community. That is solidarity.

I like that. We can define our community as humanity if we try hard enough.
Not "humans are inherently good" or "humans are inherently evil" but a secret third thing (humans are inherently social animals which means that we're very good at cooperating and being compassionate towards those we perceive as being part of our community but we're also very good at being tribal and violent towards those we perceive as threats to our community and everyone defines their community differently)

One of my favorite homages. I’m glad Abed called dibs on the Han Solo role before Jeff slouched into it

So, I'm trans. And several years ago, I was at my great grandfather's funeral. 17, newly on T, barely out to anyone other than my close friends and family. And I'm standing there at the refreshment's table, surrounded by strangers and members of my family's church, when George walks up to me.
This man is ancient, bent like a finger and frail. Tufts of white hair surround his wrinkled face. Like always, he's wearing thick glasses, massive hearing aids, and his veteran's hat. George was my first introduction to the concept of war, when he told me as a child why he was missing two fingers on his hand. He's been a fixture at church since I can remember. I've only ever seen him at there or in uniform at parades, the rest of his time spent in a nursing home somewhere. He picks up a deviled egg and says, in his quiet voice,
"You know, before your grandfather died, he told me that now he had 3 grandsons."
I'm frozen in place. I don't know what to say to that, if I should say anything at all. This is not a conversation I expected to have, especially not with this man. But he continues.
"I didn't know what he meant! So he explained it to me."
And I can imagine it. My great grandfather, uninformed and opinionated but supportive, explaining to his friend the news he barely understood himself over after-service coffee and cookies. His eldest grandchild was now a boy.
"And, you know, I didn't know what to think."
Here, George looks me up and down. This 90-something year old war veteran, who knew me mostly as the little girl playing in the church kitchen with his wife, processing what my great grandfather had really meant. It feels like a long pause, even thought it probably passed in a second.
"But you look good. So, eh!"
And then he smiled, shrugged, and walked away without another word. If I was fine, if I was happier, then that's all that mattered.
George passed away this week, at the age of 99. This memory has been bouncing around in my head for a while, but I wasn't sure if or how I should share it. It was a conversation that meant very little, but also meant the world. It was scary, and funny, and the moment when I realized that sometimes the people you least expect will accept you. Sometimes, even if they don't fully understand, even if they barely know you, someone will choose to support you. And that will always matter.

I feel this way about my discord servers too…
no you have to contribute to your fandom if you don't want it to die. most fandoms die because people say 'it's so sad watching the fandom die when the hype dies' without doing anything about it. I'm not saying you have to push out 100k word slow-burn fic, I'm not saying you have to make fan art or gif sets or edits or anything. I'm just saying we as a community should contribute to our fandom if we don't want it to die, and by contributing, I'm talking about giving kudos, commenting on your favorite fics, reblogging your favorite art and just talking about your favorite characters. that's enough to keep a fandom alive. that's the most effective way to keep a fandom alive in my humble opinion.
fandoms die because people stop talking about it, fandoms die because people stop engaging with fan content once the hype is gone. what I'm saying is, mainstream media's hype may be gone, but our fandom can stay alive and thriving if us as a community don't let it die.

If I made a Discord channel specifically for Native American / First Nations / Indigenous Creatives with a focus on writing and content creation (Youtube, Tiktok, Twitch, etc) who would be interested in joining?
This would be my first time running a Discord so anybody (Indigenous ONLY) with experience who would be interested in being a mod would be most helpful!

Our limitations help define the kind of beings we are. By embracing them, we become more aware of ourselves and of what we are capable of being and becoming. To say “I cannot do this” and accept the bare truth of this assertion is also to accept a part of what it means to be human and the kinds of experiences a human being can have. We are not gods and we are not unlimited in our power. There are things we can do and things we cannot.

In the UK, because I'm diabetic all of my medicine is free. ALL of it. Whether it's diabetic-related or not. That is, it's free to me. The NHS covers the cost. That's what universal health care is for, and it's cost-effective for NHS to ensure diabetics get all of their meds regularly and on time so that their diabetes and other complications don't get worse faster and make them more expensive to treat.
Medicine is also free for kids under 16 and for 16 to 18 year olds who are in education full-time. Also free for everyone over 60. That's all medicine for those ages. The first time one of my kids was sick enough to need a prescription and I went to the pharmacy to have it filled, the cashier was confused when I asked about the cost. I told her I'd just moved in from the US. She gave me a pitying smile and nod and explained that the NHS doesn't charge children for medication.
The full list of who gets free meds on NHS is here. Note that if you're seeking the pay exemption due to pregnancy you have to register for that and I've heard you should do that asap to maximise it.
For folks who don't qualify for an exemption due to age or anything else on that list, prescriptions are £9.90 each. That's about US$13.15. I think there are programmes you can join if you have a lot of meds that cap a yearly total, but often if you have a lot of meds one of your conditions will qualify you for the medical exemption like I have for diabetes. And hypothyroidism, actually, but you only sign up for one condition and that's good enough.
Also some entire classes of medication are free for everyone, like birth control. Because again, it's cheaper for a universal health care system to provide birth control than deal with unwanted pregnancies.
I grew up in Canada and IIRC meds were capped there too, but I don't know if that's changed. I know it was a big sticker shock when I moved to the US in my 20s. Also, back then Americans used to try to get prescriptions filled in Canada to save money. I don't know if that's still true though.
In both Canada in my youth and the UK now, we don't pay anything to see the doctor. We have spent tens of thousands of dollars on US health care when we lived in the US, and that was with top-tier insurance, which we also paid partially towards through employment deductions. Oh, and we waited in queues for it too. In the US, we paid to wait. NHS wait times suck but at least they're free. For now.
Universal, single-payer health care systems use tax money to pay for healthcare services for all. Such systems can be horribly mismanaged...see: NHS degradation via over a decade of Tory mismanagement. Or they can be run really well, when governments aren't corrupt and trying to break the system up to sell off to for-profit companies.
It's not about slavery any more than any other free-at-the-point-of-use government service. Do you have to put money in a meter to turn the streetlights on? There is no slave that goes around lighting them. Sure, some roads are increasingly charging tolls, but many roads are free to use and aren't maintained by slaves. Well sorta...I concede that the US government for some time has used prison labour as near-to-slave labour for some road maintenance, and I concede further that the Trump regime will probably seek to increase the ranks of prison labour soon.
But generally speaking, outside of evil governments and outright corruption, there are lots of services that can be provided based on taxpayer funding so individuals don't have to pay, meaning the potential for equitable access is increased for everyone.
There's a word for that, and it's not slavery...it's community.
"If tampons should be free, then so should my diabetes meds."
Yes? Yes they should be? Your life-saving medication that you need in order to live for a condition you were born with should be given to you at no cost?
