‘Sustainable’ Poster Concept

Testing out ‘to scale’ hand drawings with illustrations for second poster design. It was quite difficult to get the hands to match the people illustrations without making them look too human like or too cartoonish.

User evaluation

To test our low-fidelity prototype with real users, we went back to the Valkenberg park and tried different combinations of signals to see which were the most effective ones. We did this on our own time and tested two different periods of the day - morning and evening. We noted people’s reactions to our tests and drew some valuable inputs from them.

6# that ignored the signals completely

Findings: 

In the morning when we set up the location, the total number of the cyclists that entered the park was 18. As it is written above, only 12 of them actually paid attention to our interactive implementation. The other 6 saw the signals, but decided to take the usual path as they completely ignored our interactive element. However, the people that saw the so called invention had many different reactions ranging from being surprised through being confused and up to actually being entertained and finding the interactive element funny and helpful.

Findings: 

In the afternoon in total there were more cyclists that entered the park. In total there were 24. 20 of them noticed our interactive element and the other 4 did not really paid attention to our set up. Same as the morning session, some people were surprised about what they had seen. We found that some people did not really get what was happening as again they found it confusing. Other said that it is interesting and that they are finding it useful in order to divide cyclists from pedestrians. The people who paid attention said that they really liked the cheering sound element and that they find it entertaining. In general, our findings are that the interactive element is useful and it helps with traffic.

- Have you ever had problems getting past pedestrians while cycling through the park?

All the time, especially during rush hour it’s very crowded here. Especially groups walking next to each other blocking the path. - What are you currently doing in these situations?

I usually ring my bell a lot till there is room to get past, but whenever they have earpods in for example I really have to go around the grass.

- (After showing prototype) What do you think of our solution? I think this is really useful as it is fun and it handles a real problem here. I would definitely benefit from it and use it. - Do you have any further comments?

Not really no.

Interview random pedestrian #1

- Have you ever had problems getting past cyclists while cycling through the park?

We  bump in to each other once in while, but we both usually divert ways before it gets to contact. It’s mostly the speeding one’s that you have to look out for. - What are you currently doing in these situations?

When I see a cyclist approaching I make room to let get them past, but sometimes there isn’t much room to make so it gets awkward as the cyclists has to really slow down and get to a stop to get past.

- (After showing prototype) What do you think of our solution? This will probably work directing the cyclists to that fun road. Making both the cyclists and pedestrians benefit. - Do you have any further comments?

The idea is interesting.

Summerschool: Dag 5

Vandaag heb ik mijn (thuis) gemaakte conceptposter gepresenteerd aan Kevin en Dylan. Deze hebben mij opnieuw kritische feedback gegeven en ik heb hun van kritische feedback en verbeterpunten voorzien. Ook heb ik een concepttest opgesteld en deze verstuurd naar mijn doelgroep.

vandaag ben ik begonnen met het afmaken van mijn testrapport. Ook ben ik naar jantien gegaan om meer te vragen over de design rationale en gebruikersprofiel. Voor mij was de design rationale erg onduidelijk omdat ik die eerder had gemaakt maar niet goed was omdat het over het concept ging. Nu moest ik een rationale schrijven over het concept. Daarna heb ik gevraagd over het gebruikersprofiel, ik had hier vragen over omdat ik geen persoon heb als doelgroep maar een rol. Ik heb  geleerd hoe ik dat moest aanpakken en heb het gebruikersprofiel gemaakt. Daarna ben ik begonnen met de user-journey, en ben daarna weer naar Jantien gegaan om feedback te vragen en heb hier geleerd dat een persona niet verplicht is bij een user journey en dat ik touchpoints en gedachten moet toevoegen. Na het maken van de user journey ben ik een low-fid protoype gaan maken. Hierbij heb ik gelet op wat de testpersonen aangaven in de concepttest, zoals het zo kort mogelijk maken van de stappen en de optie om de fiets te laten halen. Ook heb heb ik de optie toegevoegt om muziek te kunnen luisteren dit omdat geinterviewde aangaven graag muziek luisteren na het uitgaan.

Concept uitwerken, testen en schetsen

Vandaag kwam Nikki aan het begin van de les gelijk bij Lisa en mij langs. We vertelden haar wat ons precieze concept werd en lieten onze tekening/schets zien. Nikki vond dat het concept opzicht wel potentie had (al moet het uiteindelijk natuurlijk wel veel beter uitgewerkt worden en moet er nog meer over nagedacht worden.)

We vroegen Nikki ook gelijk of we het beste gelijk konden beginnen met testen of dit beter konden bewaren tot op een ander moment. Zij vertelde toen dat we al wel een concepttest konden doen. Zo is het in ons concept erg belangrijk dat de doelgroep een beloond wordt wanneer het concept gebruikt wordt. We konden dus gaan testen hoe onze doelgroep daadwerkelijk reageert op een beloning.

Voor we begonnen met testen besloten we eerst om zelf eens op te schrijven waar de beloningen allemaal naar voren zouden komen en hoe we zelf dachten dat de doelgroep er op zou reageren (zoals de foto hierboven).

Hierna besloten we om de klas om hulp te vragen. We maakten een testplan waarin we beschreven dat de doelgroep eerst iets moest knutselen terwijl zij geen beloning zouden krijgen, ook vertelden we vaak hoeveel tijd zij over hadden.

Bij de volgende test gaven we de deelnemers de zelfde opdracht, maar konden ze wel een beloning krijgen. Hier vertelden we niet hoeveel tijd zij hadden.

Het verschil tussen de twee testen was dat wanneer er een beloning aan vast zat de deelnemers beter hun best gingen doen, meer stres leken te hebben en juist graag wilden weten hoeveel tijd ze nog hadden.

Nadat we klaar waren met de test vroegen we onze deelnemers wat ze vonden van de beloning. Zij waren het er mee eens dat het hen motiveerde maar dat het hen wel meer stres gaf.

Hierna besloten Lisa en ik om verschillende stylen op te zoeken voor ons prototype. Ook schetsten we de app vast uit.

Just-in-Time Teaching and Peer Instruction

The practice is to assign readings, ask students about that reading online that they have to answer before class.  Then you look at those responses and you make your lecture with that in mind, using ‘ConcepTests’ that are active learning, ‘clicker’ style questions that help fix any gaps you see in student knowledge.

It seems like a lot of work for little gain.  My main issue is in the course prep.  The model described requires the prof to read the responses to the JiTT questions the night before lecture, then come up with the ConceptTests for the next day.  If you're teaching multiple different classes (and sometimes on multiple campuses for adjunct faculty), this just isn't feasible.  You're often just trying to stay above water, and doing things ahead of time to do so.  I'm teaching a course like this now, and I have the support of a teaching team on this one course, but with teaching 2 other courses, it's really stressful to not know what you're going to be doing in lecture until the day before.  And we aren't even looking at the responses to the reading comprehension quizzes we're giving (similar to the JiTT responses), and ours are multiple choice!  I can't imagine looking at written out responses from 300+ students the night before a lecture!

Also the improvements are small at best (<1pt).  The more compelling evidence, as is often the case, is in closing the URM gaps.  If I had the time to do this, that would be great...

Design Challenge

Vandaag ben ik begonnen met het maken van de rapportage learning concepttest. Hierbij vat je samen wat je hebt geleerd en gezien uit de testresultaten. De feedback die we gekregen hebben van de deelnemers heb ik hier in uitwerkt, zodat we aan de hand daarvan het concept kunnen aanpassen. Deze analyse is ook handig om mee te nemen naar onze pitch voor woensdag. Morgen gaan we verder met het afmaken van de reportage en de recap zodat we voorbereid zijn voor de pitch van woensdag.
