Consent = F.R.I.E.S.🍟

Consent! What is it and what does it look like? There are many aspects to giving consent, it's not just about saying "yes", so why not use the acronym 'FRIES' to remind yourself of all the things to consider when giving or asking for consent.

F - Consent is Freely given: you should never pressure, coerce or force someone into saying yes to something, this is not consent. You must respect when someone says no. You should feel confident and happy when you consent to any activity with your partner(s).

R - Consent is reversible: it is okay to consent to something and then change your mind, if you're not comfortable, say so and ask to stop. If your partner changes their mind on something you should respect their choice, and if they are willing, have a conversation about their decision.

I - Consent is informed: you should know what exactly you are consenting to and your partner(s) should too. It's good to discuss specifics beforehand and what you're both comfortable with.

E - Consent is enthusiastic: when someone is giving consent consider their tone and body language. Do they sound happy, upbeat and are they being proactive? Or do they sound hesitant, reluctant or closed-off?

S - Consent is specific: when someone says yes to one activity, it does not mean they consent to other activities. If someone has consented to something in the past, it does not mean that they have consented to doing that activity again in the future, you need renewed consent.

Okay, dick jokes aside I wanna talk about the consent and power dynamics in this scene.

Spoilers under the cut

When Maomao pushes too far in trying to avoid whatever Jinshi is trying to tell her, she lands a few low blows that clearly irk Jinshi. She even mentions it later, after Lihaku finds them and Jinshi is upset with her, that he takes pride in his appearance and that maybe she had gone too far when she insulted his frog.

Despite how gently he lays her down before asking her if he should just show her, Jinshi's reaction here is purely based on ego and pride. It's not the lovelorn fingertips to Maomao's lips we saw after he let her leave the Rear Palace, or the way he held her when he carried her out of the temple after she saved his life.

This reaction isn't a cute, dark fantasy morally grey male character pinning the female heroine against a wall before kissing her, either. This reaction is frustration at Maomao dismissing him and his feelings and the important thing he's trying to tell her AND insulting his (literal) manhood on top of it. This reaction is Jinshi disregarding Maomao's words and very clear body language and touching her without permission, violating her personal space, and almost kissing her in a very compromising position while alone. This sort of situation can - and has - ruined many other female characters' reputations, even before you take into consideration that 1) Jinshi is technically her employer and 2) he's the second most powerful person in the entire kingdom.

The power dynamic is already skewed before you take those last two points into consideration, a fact that Maomao is VERY much aware of, and has mentioned - directly or indirectly - many times before.

And listen. I am a JinMao truther, I ship them so hard you guys, but I am so glad that the kiss was interrupted because this was not the way their first kiss should have gone. Maomao wasn't fighting back or saying No because she couldn't. She believes it genuinely dangerous to do so. She might have let Jinshi do whatever he wanted to her, because to object might mean her execution.

It's not a healthy start to any relationship. And it certainly isn't cute or romantic. And while I don't believe that Jinshi was malicious in his intent, he still has a long way to go before he understands the double standards that he and Maomao are each held to, and that he can't just do whatever he wants whenever he wants.

Additionally, EVEN IF Maomao did return Jinshi's feelings (she doesn't) and EVEN IF there wasn't this insane power imbalance (again, boss and literal prince), say it with me folks:

IF IT ISN'T ENTHUSIASTIC, IT ISN'T CONSENT.

I want to see JinMao happen as badly as anyone else but not at the expense of Maomao's comfort or bodily autonomy.

Ehhhh I don't love Khanin taking advantage of Charan's emotional vulnerability to kiss him. Yes, I know Charan was on board, but if I was flirting with someone who was resisting my advances, I wouldn't kiss them while they were shaking from PTSD flashbacks, even if they appeared to want it. That's not a good time to have a first kiss with someone. Imo, kissing someone you're into for the first time should only be done when you're both in a sober and stable state. Least favourite Vampire trope that I've seen in at least four shows now:

Vampire friend, please turn my dying girlfriend/boyfriend/friend/brother. If you don't, you're a bad person and it's your fault if they die.

I hate this plot choice for all involved.

The vampire usually does not want to do that because that's a huge thing to ask of someone, super invasive and basically asking them to be an unwilling surrogate parent. Most of the time, they think being a vampire is bad. Or they didn't get a choice in being a vampire in the first place and so don't want to do that to someone else.

The dying person usually hates the Vampire/Vampires in general and would not want this to happen but are unable to advocate for themselves. If they are changed, they’re massively pissed and/or evil. They then maybe die again anyway and it's still the Vampire's fault.

And yet, the not-dying and not-vampire character's feelings are portrayed to be more important than either of others' autonomy. They're also, sometimes, portrayed as being in the right. I hate this.

A few minutes ago I was messing around on Google and came across this article:

I found it very interesting and well written, so I want to use it as food for thought.

The article discusses the need for vampires to feed on blood and how this act inevitably violates the victim's bodily autonomy. The article also discusses how some believe that vampires must seek informed consent from their victims while some believe that the inherent power dynamics in vampire-human relationships make true consent impossible.

Now, let's unpack this.

With informed consent, the power dynamic between the human and the vampire would become more balanced since, with informed consent, the human would be specifically told what they are getting themselves into and would have full freedom to accept or refuse. It all depends on the individual dynamic between the vampire and the human. Furthermore, this scenario can be very useful in explaining the concept of consent since the scenario in question uses vampirism as a metaphor for intimacy.

In this specific case we are talking about emotional dynamics between humans and vampires and therefore situations where vampirism is used as a metaphor for intimacy, but there are situations where the same moral standards cannot be applied since these are entirely fantasy situations that would never happen in real life. For example, in the Twilight saga we are shown that the Volturi lure tourists into their castle to feed on them. Now, leaving aside the fact that the Volturi are villains, this is a fantasy context that will never happen in real life, so the same moral standards cannot be applied. In this context, in fact, vampirism is not used to symbolize intimacy but is simply represented as a means of nourishment.

There are plenty of animals in nature that use deception to hunt, such as the anglerfish, which uses a bioluminescent lure to attract prey. Let me be clear, I'm not saying that vampires and animals are the same thing, but in some ways they are quite similar. Not identical, but similar.

I had a question about the warning. You have the Non/Con warning attached to the story and I was wondering why and how explicit that is. I’m not turning away from the story depending on the answer, but I did want warning on what to expect, especially if it’s coming from Marinette and Adrien which I’ve seen a few times in Chat Blanc fanfics. Is it a flashback, a mention, a result of the corruption, Argos and Hawkmoth being psycho bastards, an unknown variable, etc? Is it Marinette or another character involved? I get you may not be able to explain it too much without spoiling the story, but I did want to ask to prepare for the eventual scene or mention.

I used to write on Wattpad and a lot of people weren’t happy when I made Adrien kiss Marinette without consent and that’s when I learned that consent is an important thing to people. I added the tags because yes, there are some scenes where Chat Blanc throws consent out the window and does some non-con things.

There are even some scenes where Argos/Felix does some not so consent at all things. There no straight up rape but there is sexual harassment/ sex. We are just getting started so there nothing to worry about but soon we’ll be diving deeper into the dark themes.

If you don't feel comfortable talking to a partner about what you like or how to manage the risk of disease/pregnancy, you should not have sex with that person. If you're too embarrassed to ask someone to use a condom/dental dam/glove, you guessed it. Don't have sex.
