Artist Research - Camille Bozec
Camille Bozec is an artist who recently graduated from Goeblins in France, where she studied illustration, storytelling, and character design. I was recently reminded of her graduation short film "Louise," which caught my eye due to its stunning visuals, storytelling, and especially its focus on ballerinas.
Along with 4 other directors, Bozec tells the story of Louise, a young ballerina in the Garnier Opera in 1895, who is in need of money (as many ballerinas were at the time). The film focuses on the prostitution of ballerinas, which was commonplace in those days. Many older, wealthy men would go to the opera to proposition the young women and girls backstage.
This short animated film really stood out to me with its visual style and storytelling. Its theatrical setting perfectly fits with my theme of stage. I am also drawn to telling stories with my art. Overall, it's a wonderful film and sheds light on the life of young women and girls like Louise who have been overlooked throughout history.

Artist Research
"Louise" Gobelins 2021 Graduation Short Film
After thinking about moments of intimacy and kindness, this short film came to mind. Although it's topic is rather bleak (ballerinas in the Opéra Garnier who had to resort to prostitution to survive), its beautifully animated moments of connection manage to shine through.
Directors/Animators: Constance Bertoux, Camille Bozec, Pauline Mauvicere, Mila Monaghan
At the start of the film and end of the film Louise is among her fellow dancers. The is when we see them for people who are kind and talented rather than objects of something to be consumed. That's why I love these parts. The girls aren't sexualised, they are just shown naturally interacting with each other. One of the moments that shone through is when Louise's friend helps her scratch her back at the beginning of the film and Louise in turn, helps her undress towards the end of the film.
One of my favourite gestures is in the penultimate scene. Here, after Louise pays Rose the money she owes her Rose tells her to wait. She then presents Louise with some macaroons and says she has too many. This is a simple moment that doesn't last too long but I love it because it shows how important kind gestures and moments of connection really are, especially in tough situations like theirs. It's a small moment of kindness that I think leaves a wonderful impression on such a dark short film.
