The Copywork Challenge II.

The Copywork Challenge is back! We did one back in May, let's do another run. The goal is to do at least 1,000 words of copywork this week.

What is Copywork?

Copywork is the practice of typing out another writer’s work, word by word, as they wrote it. Isn’t that copyright infringement, though? Why would you want to do that?

You’re, of course, not copying their story to publish it as your own. The goal is to get a feel for how the author works and become a better writer yourself.

For centuries, writers used copywork to learn to write well. Hunter S. Thompson typed out The Great Gatsby in its entirety to practice writing that he greatly admired. Jack London copied the works of Rudyard Kipling. Benjamin Franklin also used copywork to improve his writing.

When you copy another writer’s work, you really get to internalise the patterns they use in their prose. You get a much better feel for how they construct sentences and structure their arguments compared to just reading them.

Copying fiction is even more valuable. The best stories immerse you completely in their world when you’re reading them. The writing becomes practically invisible. As a result, you miss a lot of the cool things the writer did when reading them.

By typing out the story word by word, you learn how the writer structures their scenes. You’ll see how they weave description and action together.

The goal isn’t to perfectly imitate a single writer’s style — that would be impossible anyway. But as you copy the work of various authors, elements of what makes their writing great will seep through to your style.

Musicians start learning by playing their favourite songs — just listening isn’t enough. Artists paint studies of their favourite pieces — looking at a painting isn’t enough.

When you want to learn from your favourite writers, do some copywork — just reading their work isn’t enough.

The Challenge

Copy 1,000 words or more from a book, short story, article, blog post or anything else you liked.

It should take you about 30 minutes or so to get it done.

Take note of all the little things you will discover about their writing that you would otherwise miss completely when just reading through.

Humming is Healing

1. Humming greatly increases nasal nitric oxide

Nitric oxide (NO) is a neural transmitter that is released as a gas to sterilize the air you breathe, protecting your body by sterilizing airborne pathogens. Nitric oxide also increases arterial oxygenation and has been shown to reduce blood pressure. The more nasal NO, the better! ‍

2. Humming stimulates your vagus nerve

This plays a key role in activating the parasympathetic nervous system- otherwise known as your “rest and digest” state. Because your vagus nerve runs through both the larynx and pharynx in your throat,  humming creates a vibration that stimulates your vagus nerve and can increase your vagal tone (aka the health of your vagus nerve!). ‍

3. Humming can improve heart rate variability

Heart rate variability, or HRV, is an important metric that shows how well you are able to deal with and recover from stress. When you hum, you induce parasympathetic dominance, which means you move out of “fight or flight” stress mode into relaxation.

I adore the mentions of the stars and the night-flowers (almost 100% sure he's referencing Datura Stramonium moonflowers,) and the lovely descriptions of how the rivers flowed then.

Summary: Lan Zhan dies two years before canon and promptly wakes up in the library at Cloud Recesses right across from Wei Wuxian, napping facedown in a pile of copywork. He has a lot of questions. Is this the afterlife? If it's not, then is he alone with his memories? And most importantly, what does he need to do to keep his soulmate alive this time? Wei Ying did not stir as he knelt down by the desk. It had been so long since Lan Zhan had seen those beloved features and even longer since he’d been allowed to either get or stay this close to Wei Ying. He looked so different from Lan Zhan’s memories; apple cheeked, clean, and relaxed. Lan Zhan clamped both hands over his own mouth to stop the pained noise that threatened to escape him. Hot tears spilled down his face as he watched the young, safe, and whole boy sleep. His stomach cramped with the effort of holding the sound in, but he’d sooner die than wake Wei Ying up.

Mojo's comments: I was interrupted so many times while reading this that it took 3 days and I cannot do it justice. I did tags, though! Anyway, it's a delightful time travel fix it, wherein lwj dies and opens his eyes to his student days. Slowly, he determines that a handful of other people came back, too, all of whom died before him. He and wwx team up, try to tweak events, get together (lwj died during the 13 years, so there was no established relationship). Meanwhile, there's a mastermind somewhere, pulling strings, putting everyone in their places (meng yao shows up as a student and gets a new arc, focused on lxc of course). Great thoughts on musical cultivation, yin iron and resentful energy. (Also, Madam Yu and Meng Yao get to do a bitch-off, which is very satisfying.)

Fellow writers, does copywork help ?

I saw someone recommend doing it [& genderswapping to make it a tad bit more difficult - I think so your brain is putting in a bit more effort idk] to get better at writing. Is this actually useful ? Or no ? Or does it depend on the writer ?

I kinda like the idea, but idk if it'd actually be beneficial

Also if you don't know what copywork is, from my understanding it's like... Reading something & writing it word of word ? [If that's wrong let me know-]

WRIT200 Blog Post #2 - Opinion: It's Time to Let Realism Die

Before people come after me in the notes, no, I do not mean philosophical realism or that nobody can make cool paintings that look like photos anymore.

What I mean is that blunt artistic realism as an approach to modern media is no longer serving art or audiences as a whole, and we desperately need to let ourselves grow beyond it.

Before color film, we wanted color to make things look more real and accurate. Now, our phones have filters to turn photos black and white for aesthetic purposes. Popular 3D animation used to strive for totally lifelike textures and as much detail as possible, and now with things like the Spider-Verse franchise we're seeing it branch out beyond that into artistic symbolism.

As humans, as audiences, we instinctively understand that the most technically realistic depiction of something is not always the most entertaining, aesthetically pleasing, or effective in its message. Hence, things such as hyperrealistic CG lions are certainly an impressive feat of special effects, but they don't capture audience hearts the way that the original, distinctly stylized cartoon did. Can you imagine if something like The Muppets was computer-generated rather than actually puppeteered? Perhaps it would look more like characters moving on their own, free of the signs of human intervention, but in its attempt to look more "real" it would actually lose its authenticity. We wouldn't feel like it was more realistic, because we are accustomed to and enamored by the way that puppets move when real people operate them.

It is my solid belief that humans crave the handprint. We don't want things to be accurate so much as we want to see ourselves and each other in them. We want to see that they were crafted with a purpose, not just copied or imitated from what we can already observe.

One of my favorite examples of this is the way I felt sitting in the theater at the start of TMNT: Mutant Mayhem, and appreciating a small but telling detail in the art style. The camera panned forward over the city, staying long enough that I could clearly see a stoplight above an intersection, and I noticed that each circle on the stoplight (red, green, and yellow) was a different, roughly sketched shape.

It is not difficult to make perfect circles in any art or animation program. A realistic stoplight would have been an incredibly easy, almost thoughtless choice. But that wouldn't say anything. A stoplight on its own is just a stoplight. A scribbled-in, oddly shaped stoplight gives the audience the additional imagery of childhood drawings, New York's chaotic atmosphere, and the inherent strangeness of a film about mutant turtles with martial arts skills.

Realism isn't bad, but it's so often used as a thoughtless default that it no longer communicates enough information to be truly interesting. Realism has just become static, perfectionist copywork, and in doing so, has lost its human touch.

So let it die, or let it sleep, and let us be moved by the implausible and decidedly alive.

I haven’t posted much over the last few years. I’ve been working a fair bit, professionally taking photos and some shorter video projects. As a result I’ve had money to upgrade gear, but less time an energy to follow creative interests. I have a studio now, I use it for various photography jobs, as well as creative endeavors with wood and building.  Much of what I do professionally in that space, is helping artists with copywork. Photographing artwork is gratifying, it’s technically difficult to recreate colors as they exist in an original work. I like that it is a process I can pursue alone in my space and largely in my own head. In that way it is similar to my ramblings in the forests and mountains. I’ve struggled as an artist making work that fulfills a purpose greater than my own desire to create. Since “content creator” became a profession, and a personality brand I have really felt disinclined to put work out there. I have a disdain for the romanticized self centered lifestyle and flagrant display of privilege so many strive to convey. I have some other projects in the works, I was awarded a generous grant for a project regarding the housing and affordability crisis. It took much longer than expected to iron out all the details. That project will be slow going until the new year. Keeping my fingers crossed my work will do justice to the lives and stories which will be shared.

📔📔📔 Hello I would like to hear about some unrealized fanfiction plots

Ooh that looks like a meme I have already forgotten about. Let’s see, what have I got that’s unrealized... I have been realizing a lot of fic this year.

There’s Nun-Lovin’ November, in which I have to figure out how Hildegard von Bingen and Hilda of Whitby fall in love across five centuries and several countries. The plan for now - Gamut take your filthy unicorn away! - is for Hildegard to be given Hilda’s papers to copy, since they are just women’s writing and not important enough for the (male) copyists of England. Hildegard is resentful because she may have a rare skill (writing) but she also has a rare talent (music) that is wasted on copywork. Except that the first thing she reads from Hilda is about ambient music... so the general idea is to incorporate the concept of “the function of literature is not to tell great truths about humanity, but to find the one person across all space and time who will truly understand you” and to see where Hildegard goes with that. It may turn into historian torture in the form of Hildegard whiting Hilda’s papers to write music across them. But that will get realized.

There’s also Nikki Vorsoisson and the Embarrassing Relatives, Vorkosigan Saga fic that I’ve actually finished the first draft of, in which Nikki goes to jump ship pilot summer camp and tries not to let anybody know that he’s related to those Vorkosigans. I’ve been really enjoying how he fails every moral challenge set before him.

For truly unrealized fanfiction, there’s Goblin Emperor fic in which the couriers of the Untheileneise hear that the Wisdom of Choharo crashed, and react in classic “cool the CEO got fired, what’s it to do with me” fashion, while Csevet Aisava sits in a corner and quietly arranges that he will be the one to bring the news to the new emperor - because it is no chance that a man so competent wound up in that position.

Bonus: I am fully incapable of writing Old Guard fic. When the movie first came out I wanted to write a kind death for Nicky and Joe, a thousand or two years in the future when most of the immortals are spread out across the stars, and when one of them cuts himself and doesn’t stop bleeding immediately they have time to summon everyone back for a final goodbye to the oldest among them, and to choose how to die together. And of course like everyone I wanted to write Nicky/Joe origin fic, but slow burn on the order of ‘Nicky pulls a Brother Cadfael after the Crusade and a lifetime later Joe speaks to him for the first time.’ If I could write Old Guard fic I would inject that cursed fandom with so many linguistics headcanons and adamant refusal to use Americanized versions of names.

11 خطوة ستجعل كتابتك أفضل

اجلب معك فنجان القهوة، وتعال اقرأ وركّز في كل كلمة، لأن الكلام المكتوب سيعود عليك بالفائدة الكبرى مهما كان مجالك، معكم وليد طه من قناتي (write try).

جميعنا يكتب ولا أحد منا لا يستخدم الكتابة في حياته اليومية سواء في العمل، المدرسة، الجامعة، التدوين الشخص أو حتى على وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي والسوشيال ميديا.

فالكتابة هي عبارة عن تعبير عن شخصيتنا الداخلية وعن حاجاتنا ومتطلباتنا واستيعابنا وفهمنا للمواقف والمواضيع المختلفة، هذا ما يجعلها مهارة لابدّ من اكتسابها مهما كانت مهنتك أو دراستك أو عملك أو عمرك أو مكانتك الاجتماعية في الحياة.

بدايةّ وقبل كل شيء يجب أن تسأل نفسك لماذا تكتب؟ ما هي أهدافك من الكتابة؟

قد يكون سبب كتابتك من أجل زيادة عدد الكلمات التي تكتبها أو زيادة مخزون الكلمات سعياً لتوسيع علم المفردات والمصطلحات لديك.

علماً أنه إذا كان هدفك أن تعمل على زيادة عدد الكلمات في مقالك فيجب أن تحترفها بعيداً عن الحشو والكلام الكثير بلا فائدة، بل عليك أن ترفع عدد الكلمات بطريقة صحيحة مدروسة.

فمثلاً إذا كتبت خمسة مقالات في اليوم وكل مقال 1000 كلمة، حين تتمعن في قراءتهم ستجد أن كل مقال يجب ألا يزيد عن 500 كلمة فقط أي هناك 500 كلمة حشو في كل مقال لا فائدة لها.

وفي هذه الحالة عليك أن تكتب بطريقة مختصرة مفيدة ومفهومة بعيداً عن التكرار، لكن بنفس الوقت لا يمكنك أن تختصر للغاية لكيلا يصبح المقال غير مفهوم.

قد تبدو فعلاً معادلة صعبة في البداية لكنها تحتاج إلى تدريب على المدى الطويل بشكل كبير وتتعلم تختصر في نفس اللحظة، بحيث تزيد عدد الكلمات بطريقة صحيحة تحقق التوازن في المقال.

مع العلم عزيزي القارئ أن الغاية هنا ليس أن تكتب فقط وتكرر الكلام لأن هذا يخلق فجوة لدى القارئ ويشعره بالملل ويشتت أفكاره، إلا إذا كنت مارك مانسون ولا جيمس كلير الأشهر في عالم الكتابة.

لابدّ من الإشارة إلى أنه يجب عليك أن توضح كلامك باختصار غير مخل، ويجب أن تضع في اعتبارك أن المبالغة في استخدام الكلام الغامض والعميق والثقيل أمر خاطئ ولا يدلّ على المهارة.

لأن المحتوى الذي كتبته باستعمال الكلمات الواضحة والمفهومة والشائعة بين الناس سيجعل مقالك احترافي وقابل للقراءة والاستمرار للنهاية.

وأهم ما يجعلك تحترف الكتابة هي مجموعة من الخطوات وهي:

القراءة.

وقت الكتابة.

الكتابة اليومية.

دفتر للملاحظات (Notebook).

البحث.

محفزات الكتابة.

الخطوط العريضة.

اختصر.

الجمهور (بتكلم مين؟).

المراجعة.

حسّ بالقارئ.

وسنشرح كل واحدة على حدى.

أولاً: القراءة مهمة للغاية وأن تكتب ما فهمته أو ما يسمى بـ copywork والتي تقوم على نقل الكلام الذي قرأته وكتابته بيدك أنت.

ولابدّ أن ننوّه لك أن نقل ما قرأته ليس النسخ ونشر المقال وإنما من أجلك فقط ومن أجل زيادة مفرداتك هذا ما يساعدك على انتاج مقالات أكثر قوة في المستقبل.

ثانياً: وقت الكتابة الذ يناسبك أنت سواء نهاراً أو ليلاً هذا يعود لحريتك الخاصة واختيار التوقيت الذي يريحك، ولكن كنصيحة لك الكتابة في الصباح ستساعدك كثيراً في انتاج العمل بالشكل المطلوب وبكفاءة عالية.

وفي النهاية الأمر يعود لك لأن الكتابة لا توقيت لها هي مهارة ومهنة إبداعية وفي الوقت الذي تريد أن تكتب فيه وتراه مناسباً يمكنك ذلك.

ثالثاً: الكتابة اليومية ضرورية جداً الأمر الذي يجعلك كاتب ماهر في أسرع وقت ممكن، لأنك حتى لو كنت مبدع في الكتابة والتعبير إذا لم تستمر في ذلك وتكتب كل يوم لن تستطع الاستمرار في هذا المجال ولن تبدع.

لذا عليك أن تعتاد على الكتابة بشكل يومي سواء لديك عمل أو لم يكن لديك لأن ذلك مهم جداً لك ولتطوير ذاتك.

ملاحظة عزيزي الزائر: عندما لا تكن متأكداً من معلومة معينة وتحتاج إلى البحث حولها أكثر للكتابة عنها بشكل أوسع لا تذهب للبحث عنها اتركها للنهاية ولا تشتت أفكارك أكمل كتابتك.

رابعاً: دفتر الملاحظات هو صديقك في هذه المهنة، لأن الأفكار في غالب الأحيان تأتي في أوقات مختلفة وفي أماكن غريبة.

ولكي تكون جاهز للكتابة لابدّ أن تترك في حقيبتك دفتر للملاحظات لتسجّل عليه جميع الأفكار التي تخطر في بالك فجأة والأهم ألا تؤجل كتابة الفكرة لأنك لن تتذكرها بعد ذلك.

ومن الأفضل أن تستخدم الورقة والقلم للكتابة أفضل بكثير من الكتابة على الهاتف، وستشعر بعد فترة أنك لا يمكنك الاستغناء عنهم.

في نهاية يومك اجلس واقرأ ما كتبته في يومك، ستجد أن الأفكار التي كتبتها عظيمة وجميلة وكل فكرة كتبتها ستنتج منها أفكار جديدة أخرى.

خامساً: البحث وهي تعتبر النقطة الرئيسية قبل أن تبدأ عملية الكتابة، لذا عليك أن تبحث جيداً حول الموضوع الذي تريد الكتابة عنه وتقرأ هنا وهناك وتجمع معلومات ومصادر مختلفة حوله ستنفعك في الكتابة.

ولكي نؤكد لك أن بحثك الكبير حول الموضوع هو الذي سيدفعك للبدء بالكتابة، فمثلاً إذا كنت تريد الكتابة حول فكرة معينة عليك البحث عنها على محركات البحث أولاً ترى المقالات التي لها علاقة فعلية بفكرتك وتقرأها جيداً لتتشكل الأفكار.

وفي حال كنت متخصص في مجال معين وتريد التعمق فيه بشكل أكبر يمكنك القراءة أكثر حوله من خلال الكتب ليتكون أكبر قدر ممكن من الأفكار.

كذلك عندما تريد إنشاء إعلانات وحملات إعلانية وبوستات على السوشيال ميديا من الضروري أن تتعرف على المنتج جيداً وتبحث حول حملات الشركة السابقة وحملات الشركات المنافسة تعمل بنفس المنتج.

كما أن طريقتك في الكتابة على كل منصة تختلف من منصة لأخرى، فعلى سبيل المثال: طريقة كتابتك على الفيس بوك تختلف عن طريقتك في الكتابة على تويتر وعلى انستقرام.

سادساً: محفزات الكتابة (Prompts) وهي عبارة عن بداية الخيط التي ستساعدك على البدء بالكتابة عن موضوع معين أو حتى تجد فكرة لتكتب عنها.

مثلاً، يمكنك الإجابة عن سؤال ما أكثر حضارة أو ثقافة تحبها؟ أو ما أجمل الأفلام التي شاهدتها السنة هذه؟

ابحث عن writing prompts ومن المؤكد بأنك ستجد فكرة تعجبك وتكتب عنها في حال كنت لا تستطع التفكير في هذه اللحظة.

سابعاً: الخطوط العريضة يعني تماماً مثل العناصر الرئيسية التي نبني عليها موضوع التعبير في المدرسة هذا سيفيدك كثيراً في حال كنت مبتدئ في الكتابة أو محترف.

وخير مثال على ذلك، عندما تريد الكتابة عن (تلسكوب هابل الفضائي)، اكتب خطوطك العريضة حوله على الشكل الآتي:

مقدمة وخلفية عن الموضوع.

التعريف بتلسكوب هابل وسبب التسمية.

من هو هابل؟

معلومات عميقة عن التلسكوب.

اكتشافات التلسكوب.

الخاتمة ومستقبل التلسكوب.

هذا هو الهيكل الذي ينظم أفكارك وبعدها تبدأ بالكتابة وتضيف وتحذف ليصبح مقال متكامل يشبه تماماً هيكل البيت.

لكن هناك بعض الخطوات الأساسية قبل البدء بكتابة الخطوط العريضة وهي:

البحث.

قائمة بالموضوعات التي تريد التحدث عنها في المقال.

ترتيب العناصر كما تراه مناسباً.

ثامناً: اختصر وهو عبارة عن الكتابة بطريقة مختصرة تجنباً للتكرار والمبالغة والكلام الكثير سواء كنت تكتب رواية أو كتاب أو مقال أو حتى إيميل.

عليك أن تدخل في الموضوع فوراً علماً أن ذلك لا ينطبق في حالات الشرح عند شرح فيديو أو قصة أو محاضرة يجب أن تتحدث عن التفاصيل وأن تعيد الفكرة أكثر من مرة ليستوعبها الجميع.

إضافة إلى أن الكتابة عن المنتج يجب ذكر التفاصيل بشكل مختصر جذاب من أجل تشجيع المستهلك على استخدامه، هذا يدل على أنّ التفاصيل الغير مملة مهمة.

تاسعاً: الجمهور حيث يجب عليك أن تعرف مع من تتكلم ومن هو جمهورك؟

لأن على أساسه ستكون قادر على تحديد طريقة كتابتك وأسلوبك وكيف ستعرض المعلومات وكيف ستشرحها لهم ونوعية المعلومات التي ستضيفها للمقال.

فمثلاً لا يمكنك كتابة مقال متخصص يخاطب ناس متخصصين ونشره على موقع عام يخاطب الجميع، بل يجب عليك أن تغير من طريقتك بحسب نوعية جمهورك.

فإذا كنت تكتب مقال عن SEO للمبتدئين يجب عليك كتابة Search Engine Optimization مع كتابة المصطلح باللغة العربية أيضاً لأنك تتوجه للمبتدئين الذين قد لا يعرفون معنى SEO بشكل مختصر.

عاشراً: المراجعة واحدة من أهم الخطوات التي يجب أن تكون موجودة بعد الكتابة، فلا يمكن أن تنشر أي مقال دون مراجعته بالكامل.

بعد الانتهاء من الكتابة عليك أن تبعد قليلاً عن الكتابة وتشغل نفسك بأي أمر ثم تعود وتعيد قراءتك للمقال من بدايته وتعيد صياغة بعض الجمل الركيكة وتنظم شكل المقال مع تصحيح الأخطاء الإملائية واللغوية.

حادي عشر: احكي عندما تكتب يجب أن تتكلم بشكل طبيعي لأنك لست مؤلفاً لكتاب مدرسي بل على العكس عليك أن تكون (storyteller).

لأن الكاتب الناجح أعزائي القراء هو الذي يحكي قصة جذابة تجبر القارئ على إكمال القراءة والانتقال من سطر لسطر آخر ومن فقرة لفقرة أخرى لينتهي المقال.

حيث أن السرد القصصي عبارة عن الكتابة بشكل تفاعلي ونقل صورة يستطيع أن يتخيلها القارئ ويعيش معها مثل الإعلانات المصورة أو الفيديو التي تعتمد على القصص تجعلك تعيش نفس الموقف.

اثنا عشر: حسّ بالقارئ أيّ اجعل القارئ يشعر أنك تعرف جيداً ماذا يبحث عنه وما الذي يريده أو ما هي مشكلته كأنك تسكن عقله وتعيش ما يمرّ به.

هذا ما ينطبق على كل أشكال الكتابة بالمطلق، من الضروري أن تحسّسه أنك تتكلم من نفس مكانه.
