Anecdote: Land of Lost

01: High Alert: At Dri-Lar-404, Feathers Star, the Captain and Deputy of a ship have to move through several checkpoints to bring gifts for the Overlord's birthday, due to the sighting of one Qin Che, the "most wanted criminal in Philos's history. The only (person) to ever escape the space-time prison." The Deputy notes they're not at Philos, so he won't be a big deal. He is immediately proven wrong as Qin Che removes their guns with his Evol and proceeds to 'encourage' them through the next set of checkpoints, though the Deputy has no sense and tells Qin Che he's walking into a trap. Qin Che points out "that depends on whether or not his trap can handle the weight of a spaceship." He proceeds to puppet the two men--who die in the process--into forcing the ship to fall through the atmosphere.

02: Absolute Suppression: In the armory, hidden in the depths of the Overlord's fortress, the Overlord attempts to calm himself by reminding himself of past victories, even as chaos erupts outside the door. A black-red mist wraps around and drags the overlord towards the door, and it opens with his confirmed biometric data. Qin Che walks in like he owns the place, and the Overlord immediately begins to attempt bargaining. When asked what he wants, Qin Che's right eye glows, and he says, "What I want is the whole planet. Is that okay?" The Overlord says yes.*1

03: Mysterious Visitor: A change in the Overlord's behavior has been noted by people, but they don't question it, given his well known greed. There are rumors he's "tied up with a mystery guest." Which he is. He plays chess with Qin Che, held to his throne by Qin Che's Evol. He offers some kind of animal (located in the artificial garden just outside) to Qin Che, who tells him "A cage is no place for beasts."*2 At the banquet, Qin Che pulls a 'Masque of the Red Death,' closing all the doors and windows, locking the attendees inside. He proceeds to terrorize the Overlord and his guests: he's blown up the armory with a candle, 'happy birthday,' and "The Overlord's life is a storage's worth of treasures from 100 ships. Anyone who brings less might not taste the birthday cake today."

04: Out of Reach: Smash cut to Myer, an Enforcer whose dream is to arrest Qin Che. His boss told him, "it's good to dream." At the capital of Philos, Qin Che moved through traps and Enforcers like he owned the place. The crimes he commits across the galaxies "somehow never affect the space citizens' lives. Many have become legends, in fact." There's word of Qin Che being spotted near Feathers Star, but no one is keen on pursuing the issue. So Myer goes by himself. All ships in the port are declared to be under martial law by the Overlord's say.

05: Judgement of Fate: Starwipe back to Qin Che, who has been using a lot of power for a long time, though "an invisible tether within him holds him back from tapping into more power," and no one seems to notice. At Qin Che's suggestion, one of the High Lords offers information on another, and a whole lot of betraying happens, none of which Qin Che really cares about. He fiddles with a brooch until someone mentions the Aether Core. The Overlord has the "Eye of Aether" stashed away in a vault elsewhere.

"He relishes those absurd yet enthralling twists of fate, just like now, when the elusive echo in the cosmic void he's relentlessly pursued unveils itself unexpectedly... Whenever the stars align perfectly, Qin Che finds himself entertaining thoughts of destiny."

Qin Che shoots out the glass between the banquet hall and the artificial garden. He lets the beasts have their way with the Overlord and High Lords, and leaves. The night of carnage at Feathers Star is called the 'Night of Blood' by the Enforcers, when all the tyrants were murdered by the beasts, and several hundred ships disappeared into the horizon. Myers announces that Qin Che did it, using the holographically reproduced brooch as evidence, though the other Enforcers point out the metal used to make the brooch is centuries old and been use in countless artifacts. They are also skeptical that a single person could loot an entire planet.

06: Journey Begins: In a spaceship. Qin Che listens to classical music and drinks coffee. He also gets a communication that all the treasures he took from Feathers Star were reclassified and returned to their rightful owners. After confirming the other party got paid, Qin Che warns him that he'd best quit while he's ahead, because he's not going to be sharing whatever it is. On a huge map of the interstellar galaxies, the little orb he's been watching breaks apart, then comes back together in a different location. The map zooms into a location, and Qin Che directs the ship's AI to find a suitable place (presumably to land.) The AI finds a place: "The area is currently experiencing substantial protofield disturbances, creating a massive vortex of magnetic fields. This twists and refracts light, rendering direct entry impossible. It is forever shrouded in darkness." The ship switches to autopilot, and off they go.

A man attempts to mug Qin Che; it's the thirteenth time, so clearly he's "not blending in." He obtains the information he needs about "fashion" from a local. The section ends with, "The N109 Zone is about to meet its new ruler."

*1, The indication here is that Qin Che is using his Evol to force/coerce this behavior, and the rest of the anecdote confirms that. *2, It's amazing how often Qin Che says things like this, actually. It's more than I thought.

I'm not sure of when exactly this event is meant to take place, though between this and the dialogue in Long Awaited Revelry: Breakthrough we can infer that Qin Che must have arrived during/after the Chronorift Catastrophe, given that N109 was already a disaster area. Maybe. He seems to know how it became like that.

Magical Realism. I have been thinking about Pedro Paramo again recently and how it changed the way I write and conceptualize stories, but also how Latin American literature in general is so underrated and I will gladly do a dissertation on memory and lost documents as a motif in Like Water for Chocolate and Chronicle of a Death Foretold as a metaphor for colonialism and erasure of culture.

Adult education and instructional design with an eye towards technology in training. This is my job, and if you want to know how I decide what ideas we pursue in terms of VR modules, I will gladly tell you.

Judaism, specifically the kind I grew up on (American, Conservative) and how it grants a unique worldview that you can understand perfectly by answering the question of “why are Aziraphale and Crowley the protagonists of Good Omens when they literally thwart God, which is not what a Christian Protagonist should ever ever do.”

Literature in general. My undergrad was in stage management and creative writing, and I will talk your fucking ear off about any number of niche topics like “what is that painting in the inn in Moly Dick about and is she really offering them cod or clam chowder as a joke about their genitals” or “Telemachus Sneezed: a line that haunts me” or “Why Jane Eyre is a realistic woman and Daisy Miller is an ideal woman” or my niche theory “Hamlet and MacBeth are a duology about how neither a warrior nor a poet can handle cosmic horror.”

This was much harder than I thought it would be. Most of my long discussions with Nat tend to be improv runs on things like what the birds are putting in Pip Weekly, the fictional newsletter the cardinals in our neighborhood are writing, and “nonsense” didn’t seem like a good faith answer.

'Eyes of the Pharaohs'

Death stranding fan fiction

MULE oc Cosmic x Higgs.

There was nothing quite like reading a proper book; the feeling of textured pages beneath the finger tips, the smell of old paper, the weight of the tome. Imformation-hungry eyes scanned the texts and illustrations. Stormy grey irises honed in on one particular picture - an ancient gold death masque, its painted eyes framed with heavy black and blue makeup. The image incurred a mental flashback, a golden skull levitating menacingly, followed by a whimsical voice.

Cosmic dropped the book titled 'History of the Pharaohs' on her lap with a start. The golden face was burned into her retina and her mind. She blinked a few times, before sliding the forbidden text under her pillow. She had procured it from the last haul of cargo the MULES had intercepted. Group leader didn't know she had it. It had been addressed to someone called Peter, but he sure as hell was not going to get it now.

The MULE stood and paced over to an ornate mirror which hung on the side of the tent, another of her prized possessions. She picked up an eye-liner pencil and began to decorate her eyes; Black strokes of kohl under her lower lid, one down at the corner, and one curling into a spiral below - The 'Eye of Horus/Ra'. She looked at her reflection in the aged glass, she looked like one of those Egyptian priestesses that she had read about.

A sudden flash of Chiralium in the mirror caught her off gaurd. She gasped as the masked man appeared directly behind her, dropping her makeup pen. The gold and black pharaoh-alike wrapped one arm across her chest, the other raised to the lipless skull, a finger over the teeth where the lips would have been. She stared wide eyed into the mirror, too afraid to move. A pair of impossibly blue eyes glared back. It was then that she noticed, they too were lined in khol.

A dangerously quiet chuckle echoed in her ear, the hot breath tickling her neck. The hand across her collarbone wrapped long fingers around her throat. Another hand snaked around her waist, dipping downwards and pulling her back against a solid body. 'So he wasn't a phantom', she thought. She could not tear her eyes away from the reflection, her heart racing as the gloved hand slid under her waistband. She swallowed loudly, her breath hitching in her throat with a little whimper as fingers glided over her sensitive parts, teasingly slowly.

The fingers around her throat tightened. A hoarse whisper filled her ear, followed by a deep growl "You're mine..."

Cosmic sat bolt upright in bed with an outcry. Her head was reeling, her heart was pounding, and that felt so real...

She glanced over to the prone form of Franc, who was snoring loudly, sprawled out on his camp bed, clutching a boot like a Teddybear. She panted, trying to decipher what was real. She still throbbed between her legs, and she could still feel the grip around her neck...

Marvel Comics' #Venom War crossover will wrap up with the introduction of a new Venom host in December's All-New Venom, created by #AlEwing and #CarlosGomez.

Contrary to expectations, Eddie and Dylan Brock are not in the running. Instead, potential new hosts include Luke Cage, Rick Jones, Robbie Robertson, or Madame Masque. The series will shift its focus from cosmic to a more grounded, #SpiderMan-like narrative set in New York City, with Dylan Brock taking the lead in investigating the new Venom.

Ewing mentioned that the story is "almost more like a Spider-Man-level story" and that fans must wait until #VenomWar's end to discover Eddie Brock's fate. All-New Venom 1, featuring a cover by #AdamKubert, is scheduled for release in December.

(Just following on from the Ligotti question… I am writing this separately because I’m worried this contains too much of my own opinions, but wanted to give a bit of context to the question…)

I know that Ligotti claims the same revelation as Lovecraft - he’s described his driving sensibility as some sort of almost Underground Man-type existential resentment that nature forces man to live as a “self-conscious Nothing”. But honestly I’ve just never felt that that’s his draw. Stories like “The Chymist” or “Les Fleurs” aren’t written from the hapless perspective of puppets living through the realization that that’s what they are (the way Lovecraft’s stories so often are), they are written from the perspective of artists manifesting a more vibrant world. The horror comes from the fact that these artists manifest with human flesh.

You are truly one of the most insightful reviewers that I have had the good luck to find. I was very excited when I realised you have read some Ligotti - what do you think is the true horror sensibility animating his work, regardless of what he explicitly states as agenda?

Thank you! Your remarks here definitely make me want to revisit Ligotti more carefully. That's a good distinction, which hadn't occurred to me—that Ligotti offers the night-side of aestheticism. This links him back to the very founder of aestheticism, Poe, whose heroes, in "The Masque of the Red Death" or "Ligeia," for example, are similarly making art out of life in a grotesque or terrifying way. (Or, I suppose, Sade.) In Lovecraft, on the other hand, the narrator's viewpoint is usually that of a scientifically detached consciousness breaking down in an encounter with cosmic horror, and the aestheticism is all on the side of the invading old gods (in one of his stories, I don't remember which, they're described as dancing and playing the flute like Dionysian revelers). But I defer to you, because you have read more of this material than I have!

2023 Art Summary

that's right folks, it's the end of the year, and you know what that means here :3

it's been a weird year for me, with lots of difficult and new things going on, but i think that overall it's been an okay time. however, art stuff did not come to me as readily, most of the stuff here this year are either sketches during dead air at work or done in a big batch in one big spurt of inspiration. as per usual, i'll let ya know what all went down. it turned out alright :>

well, without further ado, let's get into it!

Continuing from the tail end of 2022, I got more requests for newer Pokemon to draw, and it was really fun! Having grown up alongside the franchise for so long, I find it really interesting that I can pick up how to draw them pretty quickly and pretty well. These were all first attempts with whatever idea I had in mind, and it was a good time :3

The next month continued the Pokemon drawing trend after I had discovered and played around with the Pokemon Infinite Fusion generator. I loved the dedication so many people had to make their own unique combo designs, so later on I had downloaded the Infinite Fusion fan game and had some fun with that!

Additionally, my partner Stacey was planning a homebrew DND campaign called the Afterworlds where angels and demons live in their own little lands. I ended up deciding on making a Changeling Bard demon of Pride, who I named Masque. I have their initial sketches here because it was sort of a pivotal moment in my character creation process. I had a vague sense of a design in mind, which I sketched on the left, but I wasn't happy with it - it was just too boring and plain. So, I took to the internet, and I looked up various references and inspirations and ideas and came up with the sketch on the right, which was much more interesting! Definitely more fitting of a dangerous entertainer type.

Once again, the months bleed together, and Masque's design was completed! I really fell in love with them and their design, and even though we only managed to do one session with them so far (mostly due to life stuff btwn all of us) I really can't to do more things with them. More things like debuting their stage persona, Escher a.k.a Ghost! As the leader of a ragtag group of traveling performers known as the Cabaret Depayser, Escher is a much more charismatic and charming facet of Masque that keeps them hidden from those who want to hunt them down. Since I haven't got to play with that side of them just yet, we'll see how that turns out :3

In other news, Pizza Tower was all the rage this month, and I couldn't help but be swept up in it too! It's an incredibly mesmerizing and fun-looking game, with excellent animation and music and everything. I eventually picked it up myself, but haven't gotten to play it yet. I did end up really liking drawing them, kind of forcing me to embrace a more cartoonish side of my art style, and it was really fun to do.

Also uh. I got sick. like... really sick. i never get sick. so i made an art to cope. this would not be the last time i got sick like that. was still funny to draw it out though

A rather uneventful month, but hey look! We've returned to Pokemon. This time I asked to draw some from memory, and overall I did okay, even for the newer ones like Toxel here. I got the general angery baby lizard vibes down.

I also drew my friend Cake's egg magical girl OC Sunny Side and her little buddy Tama in my downtime at work. I think she's neat and I thought she would be fun to doodle :>

I actually have a very valid excuse for this, because I was preoccupied most of the month with helping out my partner on her student film, which much like this wip was about our story Cosmic Legacy. I helped out with voice acting, voice mixing, and the music; although we weren't able to complete all of it and we still haven't picked it back up to finish it, I was still proud of what I was able to accomplish in about a month on top of a full-time job.

fun fact about this wip while i'm here though: it's based on this one shot from BTS's music video for Run, one of my favorite songs of theirs as well as one of my favorite music videos

i've always wanted to draw some group with this shot as reference, and it worked perfectly with these kids, but i still have to. y'know. finish it

Most of the month was, again, sketches from work free time. I felt like doodling some of the Destiny Guardians from my own story The Dark Side: War on Destiny from memory, since I don't draw them very often but I still like them a lot.

Circling back to Pizza Tower brainrot, my friend Atlas and I started tossing around an idea of what if, instead of pizza and Italian inspiration, it was ramen and Japanese inspiration? I was really struck with inspiration by that thought, and came up with five new ramen-inspired Toppins: char siu pork, narutomaki, scallion, boiled egg, and wakame seaweed. I thought they all turned out really cute :>

And, as my one piece of actual polished art in literal Months... Genshin dropped a teaser for the new Fontaine region and showed little glimpses of this Melusine, and I was so enamoured I had to draw her. They are so cute and I like em.

sometime in between months, i got sick. again. just like back in march. but that proved to be a little bit useful because...

SURPRISE, IT'S FULL COLOR ART

it was Artfight time once again, and I did not want to miss out. However! I kind of monkey wrenched myself by doing the color wheel challenge that had taken the internet by storm during the time I was under the weather. I ended up finishing it by the middle of July, so I only had time for a couple of art pieces for Artfight after that, which is kind of what I did to myself last year too. At least I had a valid excuse with doing another big fun art thing lol

I still have so many color wheel theme ideas that I would like to make, but after this, life would really get in the way of things, especially art-making in general, so I definitely plan to revisit those ideas later

it was around this time of year when not only was it forest fire season, and i had an ear infection right after being sick, but it was also time when i started really considering and making plans to move out across the country. it was a really busy and stressful time, even outside of myself since my parents and their aging parents were becoming a situation i had to watch unfold and help support as best i could. i doodled a little bit during work but most of my time and attention was spent elsewhere. drawing Lyney from genshin from memory was pretty fun, though. i liked him far too much even then lol

September was when things ramped up even more, and on the 22nd I, with my mom's help, had left with my belongings and began the 3-day trek from Seattle, Washington to Albuquerque, New Mexico. It was actually a decent time with lots of beautiful scenery, which I'll provide here since I... got absolutely nothing done in this month.

also... coolest hotel ever. absolutely oozing with charm. loved it

and actually, i lied a little bit. once i had actually moved in and settled, as i was getting stuff to furnish the place i wanted to pick up something for a little art project to like. keep me sane. so i had found this little Dia de Muertos ceramic cat statue painting kit and fell in love with it and after many days and layers of paint i basically finished it at the end of the month and I think it turned out really cool!

and so, since September was a bit of a dud, here's an October double feature :D

Over time, I started getting into a groove and much more comfortable in my new home, so my art started to pick back up. A lot of things were on my mind: I wanted to start planning on a potential rebranding/vtuber career and made some iterations on a design for my sona's model before settling on the one here, I was extremely bored one day and decided to pick back up on a papercraft doll for my friend Cake's sona (coincidentally just in time for her birthday), I started getting back into TOME and did a redraw of Demon Alpha over a screenshot from The Owl House to revitalize my love of drawing from that franchise, I wanted to draw Masque again cuz the homebrew game had been dead on our group's end because of scheduling conflicts and stuff, and lastly I wanted to do another halloween vampire-sona piece and got the idea for a fun, spooky, sexy two-parter with some bloods. It was a good time and I was feeling on the up and up :3

This month was less up, not just because I did a lot less, but because... I got covid. Finally. After nearly four years of evading it, I think the new environment and stress got to me and got me infected just in time for my birthday :^)

I could barely get anything done during the time I was sick, but I did do a few cool things. Again, I had gotten back into TOME after watching through the A2Z movies, and the epilogue really got me, especially with the softlocke content. So I did some doodles in my spare time and only managed to get this one digitized (which i didn't post yet cuz i wanted to do the others too first, whoops)

The girl on the left is a product of a nifty design challenge I found while mindlessly scrolling thru youtube shorts, where you create an OC based on some traits of yours (here's the video i found for it). It was just a fun little prompt that got me to do a little bit more this month.

Then I wanted to practice drawing my new vtuber sona some more, and there had been this trend on Twitter where people drew characters in one of the poses from this K-pop music video GUILTY. It seemed like a cool pose idea, but I feel like a lot of the people who did it mostly liked drawing muscly dudes and rendering them or just drawing the pose to be sexy, but I was most interested in the context of the song which made it much darker and spookier while still being very sexy and fun to draw, so I focused on the spookier angle of it

and finally, December was a very busy month with the holidays as I was prepping gift-giving for work and my family, but I still ended up dedicating my time to a couple of projects in the time I could find in between

my main focus this month had been on an idea inspired by this series of videos by ABD Illustrates and based on some kinds of image combination techniques to make a bunch of genshin OCs based on a collage of every character of each body type. I had made five different ideas, each with a different element, weapon, and national origin, as well as movesets and even voicelines! But I hadn't gotten terribly far in rendering them, but I wanted to have at least a preview of one of them for this, so I started with my favorite of them all, Jack! He's the one I've become most interested in developing, and I like how he's shaping up so far :3

And, of course, as always, Pokemon runs through my veins and keeps me going. I did some doodles at work, inspired by Hoenn nostalgia after finding Alpharad's Too Many Types romhack to download for myself, as well as my latest playthrough of PMD Rescue Teams Red and Blue, including DX, which I'll be liveblogging here in the future.

Well, what a year it's been. I've done a lot more than I thought, despite everything, but I'm excited for the year to come, because I am dedicating it to all the WIPs I have gathered over the ages, and I will hope to see many of them done for the next summary! Until next time!

Elles avaient envisagé l’éventualité d’une évacuation. Elles avaient préparé l’équipement nécessaire, elles disposaient d’une réserve d’eau potable et d’aliments. Elles avaient prévu plusieurs masques anti-poussières et des casques. Elles avaient stationné les vélos de façon à permettre un départ facile et rapide. Elles avaient identifié les voies d’évacuation et les zones à éviter. La vie reste possible dans la zone du volcan, dès l’instant où l’on respecte les zones d’exclusion. Elles auraient voulu dîner à deux en haut du volcan. Elles avaient informé les pompiers avec calme et précision. Elles avaient dit Siri, appeler les pompiers. Elles avaient stationné les vélos de façon à permettre un départ facile et rapide. Elles avaient fui, le feu, dans le dos. Elles avaient pédalé fu-rieu-sement à la recherche d’un abri, d��un écran de protection, d’un rocher, d’une butte de terre ou d’un muret. Elles n’avaient pas pleuré. Elles auraient voulu dîner à deux en haut du volcan. Mais la roche chaude liquide et semi-liquide. Mais la lave et les gaz libéré.e.s de manière explosive. Mais l’avalanche incandescente. Mais le magma fraichement éructé s’écoulait sur les flancs. Et la lave se déplaçait rapidement, elles pédalaient toujours furieusement. Elles avaient dit Siri, appeler les pompiers, avec calme et précision. Si les risques sont naturels et inévitables, les catastrophes, dit Siri, peuvent être évitées. Elles avaient stationné les vélos de façon à permettre un départ facile et rapide. Elles avaient identifié les voies d’évacuation et les zones à éviter. La vie reste possible dès l’instant où _ Parce qu’elles auraient voulu, dîner à deux,  en haut. Elles pédalaient fort et puis la racine qui traversait le chemin avait déformé le chemin. Elles ont avalé leurs dents. Dis Siri, que faire ? Le conseil souvent donné aux personnes ayant ingéré un débris dentaire est de manger des asperges ou des poireaux. Les fibres de ces légumes forment un cocon autour du corps étranger et facilitent le transit intestinal. En toute sécurité. Dis Siri j’ai avalé ma dent que faire ? Well luckily for you I am now awake and thereby now able to try and explain! I’m gonna try and keep this as structured and coherent as possible, but I am very liable to ramble my way into a word salad so apologies in advance if this becomes unreadable a paragraph or two in. Brace yourself because this is gonna be long.

So, first things first, in order to explain what the fuck is happening in that meme drawing, I have to explain how my brain eventually made its way to this bizarre conclusion because yes that process of going from thought to thought does have significance here.

Flashback to however many months ago: I had speed-read through VRGR several times over and was mindlessly, non-literally hungry to non-literally consume more Ravenloft lore. I went to TV Tropes because I do that on occasion and the idea of digging through a whole wiki felt intimating at the time. I only skimmed through the bits I was interested in (i.e. the pages on the darklords) but one thing on the main page caught my eye:

Now for weirdly personal context: in ninth grade at my high school we did a whole section in English class all about Edgar Allen Poe and one of the things we had to read was The Masque of the Red Death. As an end-of-section project one of our options was to make a short graphic novel (of sorts) out of one of ol’ Poe’s writings, and I picked masque of the Red Death because it was the one I liked the most. I made a design for the Red Death based on the description given for the uninvited guest and said design was something I really liked, and even after that section of class was thoroughly done with, I kept drawing it anyway because I just really dug that design I made. Slight aside but actually, funnily enough, I at one point about two years ago had an idea for a story that where I smooshed all the gothic horror lit. stories into one universe (fun fact: the franken-lad NPC in the middle from this post of sketches is a carry-over from this story idea! That’s it’s own whole text post though so I’ll leave it at that), and because I wanted to use that Red Death design for something, I put it into that story as an overarching, looming presence... which is an exceptionally funny thing in hindsight, now knowing that the Gothic Earth spin-off is a thing.

So, with that personal context you can imagine the degree of eyes emoji but slightly blurry to indicate rapid movement I was to see something in reference to the Red Death (and a mashing-together of gothic lit.) so of course I wanted to know more. I wanted to know more, but then I got hung up on that last bit: “..., and Word of God has described the Red Death as an ‘exiled’ Dark Power from the Demiplane of Dread.” “exiled”- that word choice, that one word, fucked me up and I have friends who can attest to that because there is evidence of my wild text-yelling about this on Discord, most of which boiled down to two questions: 1.) Is dissension amongst the ranks of unknowable, cosmic nightmare forces even a thing that can happen? and 2.) If so, then why and how was the Red Death exiled in the first place? What did it do? Those questions can be considered more thuroughly another day though.

Here’s where our detour ends and we finally make our way back onto the main route of this whole post: Saidra. In the section on Saidra in VRGR it is stated several times that she will, when not hosting lavish and decadent balls, shed her elaborate garb and haunt the streets of Dementlieu as a murderous spirit known as the Red Death.

You can probably see the direction in which this is going.

Saidra’s story in official 5e is a fairly simple tossing-into-a-blender of Cinderella and The Masque of the Red Death and nothing much else beyond Dementlieu itself ... but what if there was more. As my mind is wont to do, I connected dots that had no need to be connected in the slightest and went “OKAY BUT HEAR ME OUT-” and decided that it’d be kinda cool if there was a connection between Saidra and the Red Death of the Gothic Earth spin-off. Now we’re finally at the explanation of the meme image.

For my partial “my city now”-ing of lore and thereby my campaign, I’ve decided on the following points:

I’ve changed Saidra’s backstory somewhat; in the broad strokes it’s the same as the official one, but of the changes I made the most notable for this post is that her powers and her “darklord” (and that’s in quotes for a reason) status stem from and are due to the influence and interference of the exiled Red Death. It is, functionally, her warlock patron. The plague that swept the ball she was at was not a random occurrence and it wasn’t the Dark Powers either, it came as a result of the willing Faustian pact she made as did her death and return as a wraith-like being.

Throughout this whole thing I have yet to even mention the grandfather clock in the back. That is the vessel through which the Red Death was able to reach into the domains and make a pact with Saidra in the first place, hence the intended ominousness in the drawing. There’s an unrelated reason as to how it was even able to do so without being kicked back out into the infinite multiverse which can be summed up simply with, “Once again Azalin has fucked up everything for everyone and also himself” (a whole post in it of itself). The clock is currently hidden within Saidra’s estate and yes organic tissue has amassed around it.

Speaking of which, you may be wondering what the fuck is up with all the flesh ‘n bones ‘n stuff. That is because for some reason I wanted to give the Red Death a visual association with flesh and organic bodily material. Why? I really don’t know, I just thought it’d be a neat contrast to the immaterial, shadow visual associations of the Dark Powers. So Saidra, as a result, has the power to twist and mold flesh and bone to her will, hence the gross muscle-claw-hand; the two lines coming down along her arm is the skin unraveling like a ribbon (EUGH--). Also, now instead of just casting a regular ol’ disintegrate... you get melted. Like, “Good day to you sir you are now a puddle of viscera on the shiny tile floor” melted. Also there’s minions made of flesh and bone and teeth and eyes. It’s all very body horror. She might make a flesh-throne for herself later but we’ll get to that whenever.

If you’re wondering how she even has flesh to rend like in the picture if she’s still a spirit like in the official stuff... yes.

None of the darklords are aware of this all even being a thing, even Azalin (this has plot reasons). The Dark Powers haven’t done anything about this either (there are also reasons for this).

And that’s the basic bulk of what I have at the moment. So yeah that meme post is A Lot and I didn’t even get to how all of this ties into my campaign’s overarching plot! I also left a lot of points undiscussed because they could be posts in it of themselves! I have likely thought on these things far more than I should even as a GM--

In summary: ominous clock does not bode well and Dementlieu has gotten a lot more body horror-y. Both vampire and lich don’t know what the fuck is going on and neither of them are on board with this, meanwhile ghost lady is having a great time. That’s it that’s the meme.
