Imo Guber: Obi, Otti, Achonu in a curtain drawn campaign
Tumblr media
Imo State capital, Owerri went agog Tuesday, November 7 as the Labour Party (LP) crew put up a massive curtain-drawn campaign ahead of the Saturday, November 11 governorship election. The LP presidential candidate, Peter Obi, Abia State governor, Alex Otti, Imo State LP Chairman, Callistus Ihejiagwa, and a host of others stormed the Kanu Nwankwo Sports Center, Owerri to solidify the victory in the making of Senator Athan Nneji Achonu, LP flagbearer in the State. Obi who was accompanied by other Party chieftains, including Chief Chime Nzeribe and Hon. Tony Okere, Director General and Chairman of the Achonu/Nwulu Campaign Council, created a town-shaking sensation as they trekked through the Owerri popular Alaba market amidst shouts of ‘we want Saturday now!’ As usual, the power-bikers led the way with a colourful display of ridding skills followed by the campaign crew and party faithful comprising the ‘Aku Ruo Ulo’ women who turned up in their uniforms with scintillating dances, amidst multiple traditional gun salutes. Without much ado, the Abia Labour Party chairman noted that the task before the people was simply to change a non-performing government. He added that there was no living being in Imo State that do not see the danger in the state. He urged them not only to vote but to also convince and bring others to come out and vote. “We must pull our people from their homes to vote. Intimidation has expired. We have only one head, and we can only die once. Be determined. Their thugs will be afraid if we come out en masse. They can’t kill anybody. When you come en masse, you can’t be overwhelmed. They cannot kill everyone but nobody will die,” he said. Also speaking, Hon Tony Okere charged the people to deliver the governorship to Labour Party, as they did during the last Senate and House of Representatives elections. Governor Otti noted that he entered Owerri with great thanks, telling the people that the die is cast. He added that no rat could collect something from anybody that is awake. So, he urged the people to remain vigilant. “Cast your vote and monitor it; do not go to sleep. If you like sleep from now till Friday but stay awake on Saturday till the vote count up to the collation centre. Nothing is better than a good government.” In his short remarks, Obi in his usual data-based speeches, noted that suffering is just starting, citing the United Nations that predicted gloom for millions of Nigerians next year. He made it clear that there is hunger in the land and the need for change, “yet, the government is busy making budget for cars and First Lady. Imo needs a caring governor like Otti in Abia. Good government is good for Nigerian,” Obi said. “There is hunger everywhere. Bread that used to cost N250 now sells for N1000. A bag of rice now costs N70000 – N80000. The Labour Party is for Papa, Mama and Pikin; we care for human beings while other parties have drawings. “On Saturday, go and vote for LP, Papa, Mama and Pikin,” he counselled the crowd, who erupted with applause. The LP flag bearer, Sen Athan Achonu, while acknowledging the massive crowd, reiterated his commitments to sanitise Imo State of insecurity to bring peace. He said: “Did I not tell you that anybody pointing at me will make a mistake. As soon they tried it last Sunday, the Commissioner of Police was removed. The Tiger Base where they torture some innocent Imo people will certainly be desolate . “I promised that I would protect your votes. There will be enough security to help protect your votes. Do not just vote; also follow your votes the to the ward collation centres to ascertain your vote counts. “You can see the good work Otti is doing in Abia. I shall begin mine in Imo State in January. I have already told you what I shall do. There shall be local government autonomy; constant electricity within one year among other things in the line of action,” Achonu said. Read the full article

By • Olalekan Fagbade He's a serial betrayer, the time to sanction Nyeson Wike has come – PDP Chieftain declares A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and Director of Research and Documentation of the party’s Presidential Campaign Council, PCC, Dr Pedro Obaseki, has declared that it is time to sanction former governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike. According to Obaseki, Wike is a serial betrayer who formed the group of five governors that committed series of anti-party activities against the PDP during the February 25 presidential election. Obaseki spoke in a statement released on Tuesday. The statement reads, “Wike coming out to ask for the expulsion of the number one leader of the party and the presidential flagbearer of the party and the recipient of the mandate of the Nigerian people as declared in INEC’s submission that we won 21 states and asking Atiku to be expelled from the party, Wike has crossed the red line and now, he should be ready. “He has all the money to fight us back because we are coming at him like a thousand bricks. “He has unleashed the dogs of war and we will not sit back and watch him ride rough over the party and majority of Nigerians like he did for eight years over the humility of the Rivers people. That can no longer suffice.” Obaseki also challenged Wike to publish his bank account when he assumed office as a governor and after his eight years tenure as the governor of Rivers state. Obaseki added, “Wike is a member of the APC, a sitting Minister of an APC government. Wike openly campaigned against the PDP. You see, by their fruits, we shall know them. By all intents and purposes, Wike is not a member of the PDP. “If you remember clearly, just a few months to the election, Barrister Nyesom Wike, then the governor of Rivers State ran to the court to get an injunction to preclude and stop the PDP from expelling him from the party. “If he was so untouchable and bigger than the entire party machinery, why did he do that? Whether we like it or not, Wike is Satan lieutenant. “Maybe that is what reduced the propensity of the leaders of the party to do the needful. And because many of them are doves-men of peace (not everyone is a hawk like Wike), let us see whether he would come around. PDP is not a party of brigands.” #Wijeisabetrayer

2023 polls aftermath: PDP faces survival threat
The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, once acclaimed largest political party in Africa, remains disunited months after the recently concluded general elections. Prior to the 2023 polls, the party was already standing on a shaky note, and losing the presidential election appears to have put the final nail in the coffin. At the return of democracy in 1999, the PDP not only controlled the nation’s presidential seat, but dominated in both chambers of the National Assembly. This was the scenario until 2015 when the All Progressives Congress, APC, staged an upset following a merger of different parties. This is aside from the fact that more than two-third of the States in the federation were under its rule. Some party members had even boasted the party would preside over government affairs in the country for several decades. But that never came to fruition. DAILY POST recalls that the tide began to tilt against the PDP following its choice to field former President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2015 presidential election amid opposition from some prominent politicians, especially from the Northern part of the country. Some politicians, mainly from the northern extraction, opposed Jonathan’s second-term presidency on the premise that power ought to return to the region following the demise of President Umaru Yar’Adua, who died only two years into his presidency. Jonathan, the then Vice President, completed Yar’Adua’s four years term and won another four years in 2011, thanks to the massive goodwill he enjoyed from the greater number of Nigerians. He was also said to have promised earlier to run for only one term, but reneged. In 2015, Jonathan, who ran under the platform of the PDP, lost to Muhammadu Buhari of the then newly formed APC. The PDP made another attempt in 2019 through Alhaji Atiku Abubakar but it was still APC that won the polls. However, with 2023 in sight, expectations were high that the PDP would make a comeback, even more as many Nigerians felt Buhari, who emerged as President in 2015 and in 2019 amidst heightened hope as a messianic figure, did not perform well. The rest is now history as the party came second, with Bola Ahmed Tinubu winning the presidential election. His victory is now a subject of litigation before the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal. PDP discarding zoning Some believed that the PDP did not handle the controversial issue of zoning well in the first place. The debate over the zoning principle in the PDP ended in May 2022, nine months before the presidential election, following its decision to open its 2023 presidential ticket to all sections of the country. The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, disclosed the party’s position following the end of the party’s National Executive Council, NEC, meeting. He said the decision to throw open the ticket was in line with the recommendation made by the party’s zoning committee. “After extensive deliberation, NEC aligned with the recommendation of the PDP National Zoning Committee that the Presidential Election should now be left open. The party should also work towards a consensus candidate where possible,” Ologunagba said. PDP’s decision was totally at variance with the position of the Southern Governors’ Forum. This is believed to be one of the major reasons that further diminished the party. Peter Obi, Labour Party & Obidients Hitherto the emergence of Peter Obi as the Labour Party, LP, flagbearer on May 30, 2022, days after resigning his membership in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, not much was known or heard about the party. Obi was the running mate to Atiku Abubakar in the 2019 election. DAILY POST reported that the popularity of the former Anambra State governor surged after he joined forces with the LP, with a section of the youth (popularly known as the ‘Obidients’) taking his ambition as a personal project. Obi is famously known for his consumption-to-production rhetorics. His advocacy and promise to fight corruption and insecurity, create jobs, a conducive environment for businesses, and improve education, healthcare, infrastructure and the economy attracted him many followers. Atiku admitted Obi’s negative effect on the PDP’s fortunes when he spoke after the declaration of Bola Tinubu of the APC as the winner. He said that the PDP lost a considerable number of votes to Obi in the presidential election. “It is a fact that he took our votes from the southeast and the south-south — that, of course, would not make him a president,” Atiku said. G-5 phenomenon The G-5 members are ex-Governors Nyesom Wike (Rivers), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), Samuel Ortom (Benue), and Governor Seyi Makinde (Oyo). The governors, angered by the outcome of the party’s presidential primary election won by Atiku Abubakar, demanded that the party Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, should step down. They believed it was against equity and justice for both the National Chairman and the Presidential candidate to come from one region. But the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and some other party leaders refused to succumb to the demand, insisting that if at all, it would happen after the election. Permutations were also rife after the primary that Atiku would pick Wike as his running mate, but in a twist of events, he settled for Okowa, who some stalwarts considered less strong in the party than Wike. The G-5 phenomenon no doubt escalated the crisis in the PDP and they have remained a strong factor till date. Recent developments even show that the crisis has festered. The choice of Minority Leaders of the National Assembly was an eye opener that the much sought peace is yet to return to the PDP. Former Sokoto Governor and Atiku’s ally, Aminu Tambuwal, who was speculated to be favoured by the party, lost out in his bid to become the Senate Minority Leader. It was rather Senator Mwadkwon Davou from Plateau State that carried the day. Wike’s group was said to have sustained a swift opposition against Tambuwal’s emergence. As it stands, with Wike and several other members, all but set to dump the platform, the PDP faces existential threat more than ever. DAILY POST reached out to the former National Chairman of the PDP, Dr Okwesilieze Nwodo, to comment on the party’s current state. Nwodo admitted in an exclusive interview that everybody was worried and was working hard to see what they could do. The former governor of old Enugu State also disclosed that there is an ongoing internal reconciliation even though the party would not want to go public with what they are doing now. ”We are trying as much as possible to concentrate on what is going on in the court, not to run foul of the court until they finish what they are doing. They are almost rounding off; we will talk again in the near future. “We are doing more internal reconciliation than going public with what we are doing at the moment. Everybody is worried; we are all working hard to see what we can do,” Nwodo said. Meanwhile, a media aide to Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Mr Paul Ibe, told DAILY POST that he believed, notwithstanding the challenges in the party, his principal won the 2023 presidential election. Ibe claimed that the evidence they adduced at the ongoing election petition court clearly showed that Atiku’s mandate was stolen. He admitted that the PDP has set up a reconciliation committee and that Atiku was involved in its process. According to Ibe, the party is also reviewing what happened and how it conducted its affairs during the election, insisting that persons in the PDP who deliberately and knowingly sabotaged the party would be sanctioned. He said, ”From the evidence we adduced in the election petition court, it is obvious that there were a lot of manipulations; results that were supposed to be for the PDP were manipulated and conceded to the APC. “I can tell you that for a fact based on the documents that were presented in the court. So we did well in terms of spread. The party did well, notwithstanding the challenges that we, the party, had. ”Even in the areas where we did not do as well as we had expected, I still insist that there was a deliberate plan to ensure that our votes were credited to the ruling party; that was exactly what happened. ”If we are using the benchmark of Professor Mahmood Yakubu, as I said, it is really difficult to evaluate our performance. The election petition tribunal will unveil the extent of the manipulation and fraud that went through that election. It was clear. “Don’t forget that even before the election tribunal started, it was revealed that APC did not win Rivers State as already conceded to them by Mahmood. ”So the fraud that took place in that election of February 25 was unprecedented, and you can see from the report of different organisations, like the EU, that they said clearly that the election did not meet the most basic criteria for a free, fair and credible election. ”It is really difficult to make an assessment of that election because their strategy was to ensure that they took the vote away from us, from where we were supposed to have strength and to beef up numbers where they had no strength. This was their strategy, and the EU in their report indicated that. ”The report that I heard showed that the Minority Leaders of the PDP had already presented a legislative agenda. ”You can see clearly where we are; 40 days and look at the mess, there is no vigour in the policy they have put forward. They have put forward the policy for the removal of fuel subsidies without thinking about palliatives to cushion the effect. “Again there is rising inflation, rising food prices and plans to increase the rate of electricity. And no country ever succeeds in terms of development without energy security; there has to be a policy in place to ensure that small and medium enterprises are able to thrive. ”It is only in a matter of time that the PDP will be in a better position to ensure that all of the negatives we see in terms of economic and political decisions will be reversed. So Nigerians should just wait a while. ”Yes, whatever that might have played out, all I can assure you is that the minority leadership of the party will align. I will assure you that. And they will align. They have already spoken. It is nothing to worry about because even the APC also, the chairman of their party, had the cause to raise reservations about what played out. It was not peculiar to the PDP alone. ”The party has set up a reconciliation committee. He (Atiku) has been fully briefed about it and the meeting that they had. He is involved in the process, don’t forget that he was a co-founder of the party and a major stakeholder. So there is a process in place; it is only a matter of time before all of the contending issues are resolved. ”The party is also reviewing what happened and how it conducted its affairs and the election. I think it would be an opportunity to reflect, and whatever it is that should have been done but was not done, they will take cognisance of it. “So, the review process is ongoing, and it is only a matter of time before they make their findings public. There were mistakes; people would make mistakes; it is part of being human. And for those who deliberately, knowingly sabotaged the party, there are chances they would be sanctioned.” Read the full article

Orion Digest №45 - Alternate Models of ESF: What is Essential?
Eco-socialist federalism was founded on, and still relies upon, its central tenets. Regardless of the method by which it is implemented, it is important to understand that the nations of Earth must be united under one federation, that economy cannot serve the people adequately unless the means of production are available to public use, and until the system created is focused upon the preservation of Earth's ecosystem to allow humanity's continued survival. Everything else, much of what has been introduced in past issues, is merely models and suggestions on how this much could realistically be achieved.
I stand firm on the idea that the basic description listed above is true and necessary, but I also understand that the methods previously disclosed could be susceptible to my personal biases or lapses in my knowledge. Many have tried to implement the above concepts and met with some degree of failure, though the ideals are not to blame; simply the way they were handled. Similarly, I intend to keep writing and proposing more details on eco-socialist federalism as I envision it, but at the same time I am entirely welcome to alternate interpretations and approaches to the application of ESF to the world's political systems, as well as suggestions for improvement upon my own models.
It is not that I consider what I have written incorrect, but one person's perspective on such an issue might not compare to the perspectives of many. The two may align, but I find that the insights and experiences of others can make a collaborative piece of theory or art all the greater, and the juxtaposition of two differing perspective on an issue can prove a great testing ground for the merits of an individual theory. I believe that there are multiple ways that eco-socialist federalism can be achieved, and that different models can be more effective at accomplishing the goals of Orion.
While our membership leaves us currently unable for such a democratic assembly, the aim is to spread across the world and accumulate members that can reach a consensus on a strategy forward, and when the time comes, I am prepared to make my case not just through essays, but to members of Orion from every region, in hopes that I will find a majority that is in agreement with my plan. At the same time, to not leave my strategy up to democratic review would be a disservice to the spirit of the mission - we aim to build a world that serves the people, and if it is found that my judgement is lacking, and that current ESF models are inefficient in putting people and progress first, I am welcome to new and fresh ideas.
Similarly, when the time comes where Orion's structure has been filled out and established, I intend not to continue to serve as Instruist (as derived from the Esperanto word 'instruisto', the elected chair of Sword COMMAND, the executive house of Orion's command structure - represented by the office's seal, DKTC) until properly and democratically re-elected by such an assembly. My intent is to lay down the foundations of Orionist theory, philosophy and structure, as well as to propose my own approach to them, and leave it up to future members of this organization as to what path they shall choose to take.
So then, how might other models differ? While a federation must remain democratic, the structure of Parliament, the Judiciary, and the Executive Bureaucracy are not set in stone, let alone are the presence of such houses assured. Models that still allow for citizens to have a say in every level of government still accomplish the basic purpose. An economy can still be socialist while ridding itself of the market, so long as every citizen that falls beneath the livable threshold is provided for, and that the means of production are accountable and available to the public, rather than to private ownership. Finally, while de-escalation is one proposed strategy for environmental revitalization, there could exist both more and less extreme alternatives to save the ecosystem, especially as more and more advanced technology is developed.
It is important to understand that these models may need to change with the passage of time due to the unpredictability of the future. Certain circumstances may arise that require Orion to adapt and change, whether political, social, or environmental. For example, should the federation established one day be distorted into the antithesis of its ideals, it would be foolhardy to simply try once more with the same exact strategy; it is of vital importance that Orion can learn and grow with time. Just as a federation may be fallible, it is important for each member to understand that so too could the organization become doggedly stuck on an incorrect path, and as a member, it is important to stand up and fight even their fellow members on issues of importance to the organization and the world.
Outside of eco-socialist federalism, the other two primary components essential to Orionist thought are those of philosophy and structure, both of which have been laid out. Digest No. 41 detailed the basics of Orionist philosophy - the five levels (beauty, empathy, responsibility, discipline, and sacrifice) that detail the duty to fight so that the people of the world can truly appreciate the world around them and find greater meaning in their lives. Structure is listed already in several places - the two house command structure of Orion (Sword COMMAND, of which the Instruist is elected and the other positions are appointed; and the Council of Flagbearers, of which regions elect their own representatives), as well as the three branches (Sword of Orion, Liberius, Museion Institute) and their respective chapters.
Beyond this, I anticipate that over the course of Orion's existence, the words and theories written down in the Digest may be subject to change and evolution, and while I may find myself in disagreement, I am open to the idea of being proved wrong. However, it is vital that the theory, philosophy, and structure remain essential. We cannot forget that people deserve to enjoy the world, and that we owe it to each other to be kind and work together. We cannot neglect the precious balance between us and our natural habitat. We must make sure that our society is one that is united and puts accountability in the hands of both the individual and the community. Finally, as long as there are those who are willing to strive for these ideals, Orion must fight for the survival and prosperity of humanity, and for that unending pursuit of beauty and knowledge.
