So I’ve started practicing making book covers in my spare time, because it’s a skill I really want to acquire. These are the first few I’ve done. Mostly the covers will be NA romance based, because that’s the kind of book I want to write, but Dahlia was basically to see how well I could emulate VC Andrews’ style of covers (at least some of the newer ones. It went... alright, I think. Kiss the Stars is my favorite one, I think, as it’s the closest to the mood and feel of the story I had in mind. But I don’t know. I’m mostly just showing these so I can have a place to keep record of my progress.

(Also, none of these books are real. Some come from ideas for books I have and do want to write, but a lot of the time when I practice covers, I find a picture I’m inspired by and make up the cover and title and stuff on the fly)

Talking to Americans About Healthcare

Because a lot of people not in the US have trouble understanding why the US healthcare system is the way it is.

1) Veterans’ Affairs

As it is, the US DOES have a national healthcare system.  Every veteran in the US has the right to healthcare.  They created government agency who’s primary purpose is to provide veteran healthcare.  By account of pretty much every single person who has used it, Veterans’s Affairs Healthcare is abysmally run.

2) Veterans’ Affairs, Pt2

Whenever Americans hear horror stories about socialized healthcare, they immediately think about Veterans’ Affairs.  They quickly assume that these stories are commonplace, and immediately reject the idea of government healthcare.

3) Heathcare is Not Capitalist in the US

A lot of people’s first assumptions are that Healthcare in the US is capitalistic, and that’s the problem.  Capitalism requires competition.  Legally, in many parts of the US, they need a Certificate of Need.  They have to prove there’s an excess capacity that needs to be filled before you are allowed to create a medical practice of any kind.  What this means is that those already in the field have a government enforced monopoly.  Monopolies are not only the opposite of Capitalism, but the difference between Socialism and Fascism is that Socialism has the government run it themselves, whereas Fascism austensibly has private enterprises, but has so many legal regulations as to make them an organ of the state.

Even if they don’t require a certificate of need, most hospitals in the US are legally charities, and as such get charitable donations.  This also is against Capitalism.

Further, the reason why HMO’s are allowed to so ridiculously control the market is that, legally, it’s really hard to provide healthcare, that’s not cash-based, and not go through HMO’s.  If it was Capitalist, there would be small HMO’s in every major city.

4) Obamacare was a Fascist Mess

People love to claim that Obamacare was just a few simple provisions

Here’s a link to the official law.

It’s 2,409 pages long.

If you don’t know about your rights, you don’t have them.  How they think they can pass a law that of 2,400 pages long and expect the average person to know what’s in it?

They can’t, that’s how.

The most important provision prevented people from being denied coverage for pre-existing conditions.  This is, as a matter of fact, the part of the law Donald Trump wanted to keep.  This is designed to prevent mortgage-destroying medical debt, but the costs have to come from somewhere, and that place is from the people paying their bills.  So, yeah, the first thing the Affordable Care Act did was increase the cost of healthcare, at least the upfront cost.

It also made it mandatory for people who buy these crippling, incestuous HMO plans.  A government option was in consideration, but not actually part of the bill.  There were also provisions mandating coverage that employers had to provide for their employees.  Now, if a business wants to provide healthcare, or, as it is in Canada, extended Healthcare, that’s one thing.  But, mandating it locks employees in with their employers.  Being able to leave your job is a fundamental requirement for Capitalism, but anyone who relied on healthcare for major issues was now hobbled to their employer.

There was also an attempt to create a government exchange to help people compare plans.  The system never worked, went ridiculously over budget, and didn’t fix the fundamental flaws with the system.

5) Michael Moore’s Sicko Was Not About Those Who Were Not Covered

It was about those who in theory had good coverage, but were absolutely destroyed by the labyrinthian bureaucracy of their HMO’s.  There was no attempt to fix the insane, labyrinthian bureaucracy, no attempt to put in price ceilings, no attempt to fix the insane levels of patent abuse in the US.

Even in it’s best-case scenario, Obamacare would have forced them into this very broken system.

6) The HMO Has Final Say, and They Think Government Healthcare is the Same

How it works in the US:

Go to specialist.  Specialist decides what procedures they want to sell you.

Patient calls HMO.

HMO decides is the procedure is covered.

So, when it comes to public healthcare, they assume other countries just replaced the HMO with government.

I can’t speak for other countries, but in Canada.

Provincial government decides what procedures what covered.

You can pick whichever General Practitioner / Family Doctor you want.

You go to your General Practitioner / Family Doctor, and they refer them to a Specialist.

Specialist decides what procedures you need.  If the procedure is covered by the government, they cover it.  If it’s not covered, it’s not covered, but it’s not the government making the decision in your specific case, like HMO’s do in the US.

7) Federal Healthcare is Unconstitutional

The US Constitution is largely about limiting the power of the federal government.  Any powers not explicitly given to the federal government belongs to the states or local government.  This means that cities and states can provide their own government healthcare.  It’s weird how no state, (other than Hawaii), has tried to provide it’s own healthcare.

Also weird, in that in Canada healthcare is done on a provincial level.

8) It’s Their Decision

A lot of people in the US do not want government healthcare, and a lot of people assume it should be forced on them.

This even happens in the US, where the people who want to create federal healthcare live in the rich blue areas, and the people resisting like in the rural red areas.  The people in the blue areas would likely be footing the bill, but the people in the red areas are the ones refusing.
