Jack Harlow x Singer!OC
Series Masterlist
9. Here We Go Again
tw: slight violence
Tumblr media
Maryse Monet began writing “-Ugh, those feels again” following the end of a long-term high profile relationship that she’s characterized as “depressing” and “exhausting,” but half way through the writing process the unthinkable happened, “I originally wanted this album to be a breakup album, but then I fell in love unexpectedly.” The 24 year old singer-songwriter tells Apple Music. That freshness of perspective resonates throughout the album.
“-Ugh goes through the emotional roller coaster of falling back in love after having your heart broken and I feel like everyone can relate to this album.”
Here Maryse takes Apple Music through her favorite tracks on -Ugh those feels again.
Second Chances ft. Jack Harlow
“I was stuck on this song for weeks, I had the whole song written but I always felt like it was missing something, and that something was Jack. I watched him write his verse in 15 minutes. It was amazing, I’m so in awe of his talent.”
Let It Go
“Let It Go is about when you’re so blindly in love that you ignore all their red flags and fail to see them for who they really are. You get to the point where you have to let it go and doing that will allow better love into your life.”
Fun Girl
“I love this song, it’s raw and unedited. Just my voice and my electric guitar. It was inspired by an ex who called me a fun girl. Someone who is cool to hang out with until it’s time to settle down.”
Toronto
“I wrote this song on my flight home from Toronto after a Drake concert. This song and that city will always have a special place in my heart because it’s where I kissed my now boyfriend for the first time.”
To Jack, From Maryse
“This was the very last song I wrote and turned in for the album. I literally turned it in right at the deadline. It was originally just going to be a small interlude but I just couldn’t stop writing. I’m professing my love to Jack in this whole song. I actually sung this to him first in front of a large audience before I had even told him in person”
***
A weight felt like it had been lifted from Maryse’s shoulders. Her debut album was officially released. The reviews were slowly coming in, critics were raving about the album. Pitchfork who is known for giving harsh reviews gave it a 7.4! She couldn’t believe it.
Maryse was currently getting ready for her album release party that her team and label was throwing for her. After being locked up in the studio for almost a year, it’s going to be fun to go out and not have to think about finishing the album.
As she was touching up the gloss on her lips she heard a slight knock behind her. Looking up in the mirror, there was Jack looking as fine as ever. Maryse had to smile when she noticed she and Jack were matching. You had told your team that you wanted the dress code to be more casual, Jack went with a blue sweater, black cargos with matching NBs.
Maryse had a bunch of different options to choose from when it came to her outfit but she eventually decided to wear a custom blue David Koma two piece set.
“Hey baby!” Maryse said, turning around to wrap her arms around his neck in greeting. Her heels tonight gave her a few extra inches.
Jack tightened his hand around her waist and reached down to give her a kiss but frowned when Maryse pulled back. “Hey!” He said with a whine.
All Maryse could do was laugh. “I just touched up my lipstick!” She tried to explain. Jack just shook his head at her, “I don’t care.” And pressed his lips against hers before she had time to react.
After almost four months of dating he still managed to leave her breathless. Maryse never wanted that feeling to go away.
As she tried to pull away, Jack captured her lips once again. Maryse relaxed into his arms and stopped fighting it. Enjoying this moment before they were going to be around a bunch of people all night.
Jack pulled away and pressed his forehead against hers. Maryse giggled seeing that some of her lipstick rubbed off on his lips. Turning back towards her vanity she grabbed a makeup wipe, and began wiping it off his lips.
“What, not the right shade?” Jack said cheekily. All Maryse could do was smile with a shake of her head. After she was done, Jack spun her around so that Maryse’s back was facing him. He smiled at her in the mirror, pressing a kiss behind her ear.
“We look good.” Maryse nodded in agreement. They did look good.
“Look at us in our matching outfits, it’s giving power couple!” Jack said with a click of his tongue. Maryse laughed at his phrasing. “Please don’t ever say that again!”

The party was in full swing. There was a huge turnout, not only were close friends like Saweetie and Doja there but many people from the music industry were there as well.
“BITCH!! You look the fuck good!” Doja screamed as she finally found her. Maryse was getting pulled in so many directions since she arrived at the party.
Maryse let out a sigh of relief and gave her friend a tight embrace, happy to see her. “Thank you babe! You look amazing as well!”
Doja thanked her before giving Maryse a once over. She looked happy but maybe overwhelmed. “You good?”
Maryse immediately nodded. “Yeah, I just wasn’t expecting so many people here. This has been a crazy few months. This time last year I was just known as “star New York QB girlfriend who sometimes dropped music on SoundCloud.”
Doja pinched her friend's side hearing her talking down on herself. Especially on a night like this. “OW!”
She just rolled her eyes at friend. “I’m not gonna stand here and let you talk down about yourself, especially at your release party. You deserve all this and more. You’ve always been the hardest worker in the room and this year proves hard work pays off.”
Maryse wanted to cry hearing Doja say that, she needed to hear that more than ever. She opened her mouth to thank her best friend but Doja immediately shook her head. “I know, now let’s go find Saweetie and get crazy drunk!” Maryse laughed as Doja dragged through the crowds of people and towards the bar.
As the night went on, she noticed that Jack kept disappearing. Pulling out her phone to text him, the music suddenly stopped. Maryse looked up and her eyes widened when she saw her manager, CoCo and Jack on stage both holding a microphone.
CoCo spoke first. “Don’t worry, I’ll turn the music back on in a second!” The crowd laughed as she continued. “I wanted to come up here and thank everyone for coming to Maryse’ album release party. Maryse worked on this album tirelessly to make this the most successful debut album, and I can proudly say she succeeded.”
Maryse watched as Jack pulled out a framed plaque with the cover of her single Focus on it.
“Not only is -Ugh those feels again already on pace to becoming the number one album in the world but we just got word that her single, Focus just went 5x platinum!” Maryse’ eyes started to water as the crowd turned towards her and cheered, celebrating the achievement.
“Now, come up here girl and come get this plaque!” Coco said, waving her up towards the stage.
Maryse made her way to the stage and embraced her manager. She couldn’t have done any of this without her guidance. Maryse then turned towards Jack who was standing there, looking as handsome as ever. He placed the plaque on the stand and gave Maryse a huge hug, lifting her off her feet slightly. “I love you, I’m so proud of you always.” He whispered in her ear, and gave her a small kiss. Not wanting to show too much PDA.
Pulling away, Jack lifted his microphone to say a few words. “I’m going to make this really quick, I promise. Maryse, I see you everyday, whether it’s on FaceTime or in person and not a day goes by where you don’t amaze me. I’m fortunate enough to witness your passion and tireless work ethic and your ambition. I don't think you even realize how iconic you are. You’ve earned every bit of this, I love you.”
Maryse had to try and keep her body from shivering, she wanted nothing more in that moment than for Jack to carry her off somewhere private so that she could have her way with him.
***
The party was coming to an end, Maryse spent the rest of the night sitting in Jack’s lap in a dark corner of the club as he whispered sweet nothings in her ear.
In her buzzed state, Maryse became more bold and touchy, kissing the corner of his mouth. “You’re amazing.” She murmured, delighted.
Jack grins lazily at her, pulling her closer to him. “No, you are.” His face flushes as Maryse continues pressing kisses up his neck and along his jaw.
He hisses in a breath and squeezes Maryse waist. “You shouldn’t tease like that, M.” Jack mutters. “Play nice.”
Maryse giggles with a playful shake of her head and pecks at his lips. “Never.” She teases.
“Ok, it’s time to go. I need you right now.” Patting her ass to motion her to get her up. Maryse was getting excited, more than ready to go home.
“Wait for me by the door and we can go alright?”
Maryse nodded and stole another kiss this time tugging the bottom of his lip with her teeth.
“Fuck.”
“Hurry back!” Jack immediately nodded before heading off to the restroom.
As Maryse wanted for Jack to return, despite most of the crowd clearing out, it still felt hot and stuffy. She texted Jack that she was going to wait right outside the exit of the club.
Leaning against the brick wall, she sighed in relief. Enjoying the breeze and quiet, the moment of peace was rudely interrupted.
“Aw man! You threw a party without me?!”
Walking towards her was her ex Nate. Maryse groaned loudly. “Just when I was having a good night, you decided to show up!” She said, wrapping her arms around herself, suddenly feeling uncomfortable around him.
“Don’t do me like that, baby!” Nate said with an almost evil smile.
“Don’t. Call. Me. That.” Two years ago, hearing Nate call her that would’ve made her smile but now it made her stomach turn.
Maryse tried to walk further down the sidewalk as Nate kept inching closer. “I just think that the inspiration for your album should’ve been invited to the party!”
Her eyes almost popped out of her head with how hard she rolled them. “Good thing you don’t get paid for thinking.”
She continued, “Please don’t ruin my night, Nate. Go home, I can smell the alcohol on your breath from here. Besides, Jack will be out soon.”
The mention of Jack made his ears perk up. “OH! So that’s what it is, you don’t want Jack to see me. Scared he’ll notice that you’re still in love with me?”
Now it was Maryse’s turn to laugh. That was the funniest thing she’d ever heard. “You should really go to the doctor and get your brain checked for early CTE, if you honestly believe I’m still in love with you!”
“What did you just say to me?” Nate had cornered Maryse now, roughly grabbing her by the shoulders and pressing her hard against the brick wall. Drinking always made him angry but he’s never put his hands on her.
Before she could even react, Nate was roughly pulled away by Urban. His drunken state made him fall back on the concrete. “Fuck off, dude before I kick your ass for real!”
Shooken up by what happened, Maryse jumped when she felt hands wrap around her. “Hey, it’s just me.” Hearing Jack’s voice immediately made Maryse put her guard down.
Jack could tell she was trying to stay strong as he pulled her into his arms. He couldn’t help but place blame on himself, he should’ve never left her alone.
He didn’t have time to think about that now as he felt his sweater turn wet from Maryse tears. Tapping her bottom with his hand, “Jump.”
Maryse listened, wrapping her arms around his neck and wrapped her legs around his waist tightly so he could carry her.
Jack was pissed that such an amazing night was ruined by some dickhead. He didn’t know much about Nate Williams other than the fact that he was her longtime boyfriend. Maryse only talked about him in her music, never mentioning why they broke up. At least not to him. He knew that eventually they would need to talk about it.
Right now that conversation could wait. He needed to get her home, tucked in bed, snuggled underneath him. Where he knew she was safe.
***
AN: damn you Nate for ruining such a great night!! 🤬
As always please let me know your thoughtssss

Description:
Jeff Buckley | HMV Superstore | Toronto, ON, Canada | 10/27/1994
Jeff Buckley and his band made a special appearance at the HMV Superstore in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on October 27, 1994. They were in town for a concert that took place the following evening at Trinity Church (aka Trinity Centre/Trinity-St. Paul's); I will post some snippets of the aforementioned concert in the pinned comment. Coincidentally, as a native Torontonian, I purchased my vinyl copy of Grace at the same store, completely oblivious to the fact that Jeff had played there about a decade earlier.
I would like to give thanks to my friends Alex Haitz and Cory, who both helped enhance the audio-visual quality of this footage, which was originally even more diluted. I would especially like to extend my sincerest gratitude to Karen Pace, who not only organized this event, but gave me a copy of her VHS transfer, which she made directly from the master tape. Here is a description of the video, in her own words:
"The footage is very poorly shot, very amateur. Our regular videographer was not working that shift, so it fell to one of the floor employees to hold the camera, which she did not do very well. It's very shaky. But it exists.
As far as I know, no one owns the original copy that would have been in the DJ booth at 333 Yonge St. after I left there in 1997. When the store closed, I bet you can investigate for decades and never find out what happened to the stuff that was in the DJ booth! I made a copy for myself right after the in-store, as I was the host for it that afternoon. The in-store happened because I asked for it from the label rep, and Jeff did it as a favour to me, because I had met him in New York City at CB's Gallery in December 1993, and again at his first 2 Toronto shows at Ultrasound and C'est What. He was a mutual friend of my New York singer friend Peter Stuart, who would go on to form the band Dog's Eye View. Jeff told me that he never did in-store performances, that he hated to do them, but he acquiesced and did it as a favour to me when I asked for it through the label rep. I will be forever grateful that we got that small performance at HMV.
The set was just over 30 minutes long, maybe 40 minutes, if I remember correctly. However, the store employee who videotaped it only put in a 30-minute tape into the video recorder, so the performance cuts off after 30 minutes and no one on the planet has the rest of the show on any footage anywhere. I know that for a fact. Cell phones with cameras didn't exist then for audience members to shoot it!
As for the original tape of his HMV set: the usual camera person was indeed Derek Conant, but he wasn’t working the day of Jeff’s in-store. So a floor person, who usually helped customers or handled cash, held the camera. The camera is not steady, the shots are blurry then come into focus. She had no experience and did us a favour by holding the camera while I did the interview. Derek was my cameraman for the next 3 years, as well as the marketing manager, Sara Kupusa, once in a while at the beginning, then Christopher Mills was hired to do all video editing and interview and live shooting as he was a film student at Ryerson. But on Jeff’s in-store day, we were still in the very beginning stages of having in-stores and video-taping them with an interview, to be able to edit them together to play in the store as a reel. She (the videographer) only put in a 30-minute tape into the video camera. So silly! None of us even double-checked to make sure it was a longer tape! It was a VHS camera. It taped right onto a VHS tape.
After the in-store, I copied the original VHS tape onto a used VHS tape from home that was 45 minutes long, so in the middle of that song, it cuts out to whatever else was on my personal VHS tape (a news reel for something), then goes blank. So we only have 30 minutes of that set. The set lasted about 40 minutes, if I recall. I don’t have a set list for it to know what songs came after that. Maybe some fans who were there wrote that down?
I have no idea what would have happened to all the stock at HMV, nor all the in-store video tapes that would have been in the DJ booth when it closed down. I assume they were all carted off to the dump. There is no head office that they would have been shipped to, and I assume everyone was given their walking papers without being able to take anything from the store. That’s how it usually works. The doors are locked and everything in the store is thrown out."
With that said, if anyone watching this video, and reading this description, has the master tape, or knows who might have it ― assuming that it even still exists (as Karen implied, it likely doesn't) ― please get in touch with me, as I would like to have it digitized for posterity. I should also note that the poor sound is due to this video being in mono. My friend, Cory, surmised that the master tape might have stereo sound, though.

Portraits of Queen West
Tumblr media
Tomorrow (September 14), I'm hosting the EFF Awards in San Francisco. On September 22, I'm (virtually) presenting at the DIG Festival in Modena, Italy.
Tumblr media
Portraits of Queen West is Kevin Steele's extraordinary photo-book, a work of "sequential art" featuring time- and space-series of a single – rather glorious – stretch of Toronto's Queen Street West:
https://crowdfundr.com/queenwest
Steele himself is as extraordinary as his book. I first ran into him through Mackerel Multimedia, the pioneering Canadian multimedia shop that he co-founded in the early 1990s – one of those art-school kids who discovered the Mac, fell in love with the radical possibilities of digital art, and changed the world:
https://craphound.com/nonfic/mackerel.html
Steele's pioneering work – in Hypercard, then CDROMs, then Flash – helped define the look-and-feel of the old, good internet; an urbanist feel that owed a debt to Toronto's most beloved adopted urbanist, Jane Jacobs. Steele and Mackerel made things that were beautiful and human-centered, human-scaled and human-adaptable.
Not for nothing, Hypercard presaged the web's critical "view source" affordance, which allowed people to copy, modify, customize and improve on the things that they found delightful or useful; this affordance was later adapted by other human-centered projects like Scratch, and is a powerful tonic against enshittification.
Mackerel didn't survive the first great multimedia mass-extinction, but it launched the careers of a whole generation of talented web-writers and builders, and not just its former employees, but also the millions who were touched by its work.
I haven't seen Steele in person in decades, but I follow his work – not as a multimedia artist, but as an urban photographer. Kevin and I follow each other on Flickr – the once great and great again photo-sharing site that survived decades of abuse from Yahoo and Verizon before being taken indie and rescued by the Smugmug folks.
Back in November 2010, Kevin started posting photos of individual storefronts on Queen Street West to Flickr. They were painstakingly labeled and dated, and they multiplied. By the end of the year, there were a couple dozen of them:
https://www.flickr.com/search/?sort=date-posted-desc&safe_search=1&tags=queenstreetwest&user_id=92518741%40N00&view_all=1&min_upload_date=1073368800&max_upload_date=1294552799
A year later, there were hundreds:
https://www.flickr.com/search/?sort=date-posted-desc&safe_search=1&tags=queenstreetwest&user_id=92518741%40N00&view_all=1&min_upload_date=1073368800&max_upload_date=1326088799
Today, there are over 1,200 of these:
https://www.flickr.com/search/?sort=date-taken-desc&safe_search=1&tags=queenstreetwest&user_id=92518741%40N00&view_all=1
Now, I know Queen Street West very well. It was once one of Toronto's most bohemian neighborhoods, where my paternal grandfather's fellow refugee Benny Yacht has his schmata shop and where my maternal grandfather took my mother and her siblings to trade in their comics for credit at cramped, crammed used bookstores.
I discovered Queen West as a pre-teen, thanks to Bakka Books – now Bakka Phoenix – the oldest science fiction bookstore in the world. I haunted Bakka, and, on the way, found myself drawn into the other stores around it:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/doctorow/48476314831/in/photolist-2gRFMvz-2oJJDCY
There was Silver Snail, a massive comics shop, but a bounty of used bookstores, vintage clothing stores, thrift shops, the indescribably great electronics store Active Surplus and, later, nightclubs like the Rivoli, the Diamond, the Bovine Sex Club and the Zoo Bar.
For a critical decade of my life and more, the stretch of Queen Street that Steele obsessively documented in his Flickr feed had been the center of my life. I watched it thrive and grow – and then collapse into a kind of self-parody, as the original landlords (like Bakka's landlord) died, and their failsons and faildaughters kicked out longstanding tenants and replaced them with multinational "brands" that turned Queen West into a less-convenient, open-air version of the sterile Eaton Centre mall.
Steele, it turns out, was having similar feelings of dismay as the organic, grown, chaotic delight became groomed, sterile and homogenized. After a 2008 fire wiped out an entire block of Queen West – including Duke's Cycle, a city institution that eventually shuttered after more than a century of service – Steele began his documentation project.
Steele had started documenting the street in 2001, but that fire turned a hobby into a project. Over and over again, Steele returned to the street, meticulously photographing the same storefronts, capturing a time-series that eventually spanned 16 years, from 2001-2017. Steele gradually stitched these photos together into panoramic collages, reproducing whole blocks:
https://www.flickr.com/search/?sort=date-taken-desc&safe_search=1&tags=linearpanorama&user_id=92518741%40N00&view_all=1
It is these "linear panoramas" that form the backbone of Portraits of Queen West. The book runs 162 pages, and it meant to be read forwards and backwards – start from the front cover and turn the pages to see the north side of the street, along with insets showing details (like the storied Graffiti Alley), and then flip the book over and start again, seeing the south side.
For more than a decade, I've thrilled to my unexpected trips through Steele's time-machine, as he posted his space-and-time-series images of a vanished urbanism, an old, good city that paralleled the old, good web. I got a peek at a PDF of the new book that collects these extraordinary image and immediately pre-ordered a copy.
Steele and his publisher Black Eye Books are crowdfunding presales of the book on Crowdfundr; the book is CAD40 with shipping (there's also a deluxe edition at CAD55, which comes with a signed bookplate and six postcards):
https://crowdfundr.com/queenwest
After a string of ghastly mayors – each finding new depths of depravity, selfishness and mismanagement to plumb – Toronto just elected its first progressive mayor in a generation, the wonderful Olivia Chow, for whom I used to ring doorbells support of her city council campaigns:
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/jun/27/olivia-chow-wins-election-as-torontos-first-chinese-canadian-mayor
Anything that can't go on forever eventually stops. The enshittification of the old, good web continues apace, but there has never been more energy to build a new, good internet – and banish the enshitternet of Big Tech to the scrapheap of history.
In the same way, Toronto's much eroded urbanism, pluralism and liveability are both at their lowest ebb in my lifetime – and also at their most hopeful moment of the century. In 1998, the dead-eyed Romneyoid Premier of Ontario Mike Harris "amalgamated" Toronto with its suburbs, putting it at the mercy of car-addled out-of-towners in an act of gerrymandering that all-but-guaranteed that city residents' political choices would be swamped by suburbanites who could be convinced to vote for laughable Tory bumblefucks like Rob Ford.
Overcoming the gerrymander required a massive turnout – not merely a supermajority, but an ultramajority of politically motivated, organized, committed, pissed off Torontonians; Chow's election is a minor miracle that part of the wave of other historic reversals, like the DoJ awakening from its coma to drag Google into court on antitrust charges.
We are a long way away from making a new, good internet that's a worthy successor to the old, good internet, and at least as far from a new, good Toronto that the people of the old, good Toronto would have built but for Tory wreckers and the Christmas-voting turkeys who elevated them to office. But both are possible – and both demand that we fight for them.
Steele's beautiful photodocumentary of one slice of that old, good city doesn't just memorialize the world we lost – it is inspiration for a world that is ours to win.

The Curse of Saki Sanobashi
I'm writing this journal entry to document my experience with a certain film. I'm probably already dead if anyone is reading this, but please read on. I hate Saki Sanobashi and what it has done to my life. Most importantly, I hate the depraved bastards who made it.
Until recently, I've been an average college girl with only one notable quality: I love searching for lost media. Most people get a thrill from watching a good horror movie and I'm no different with lost media. There's just something about the elusive nature of it that makes the hunt so fascinating. There's a countless amount of entertainment that vanishes from the public eye for whatever reason and many remain completely forgotten. That never sat well with me. Maybe it's the history buff in me, but I believe every form of content should be preserved. It's scary to think that something that brings you joy could one day be forever lost to time.
Saki Sanobashi is a name that's been plaguing me for the last few years now. Every lost media enthusiast worth their salt has at least heard of it if they haven't already joined the hunt. I'm one of the several archivists who plunged headfirst into this monstrosity of a goose chase. I, like many others, got hooked on its tragic premise of a bunch of schoolgirls trapped in a bathroom where death is the only way out. The morbid curiosity in all of us compelled us to search high and low for this elusive anime.
That was years ago.
Now? Saki remains a distant memory in the minds of once optimistic researchers. Dead end after dead end had led to the entire thing being labeled as some elaborate hoax. Even I began losing faith in the search despite all the time I invested in it. It was disheartening knowing that one of the most fascinating lost media searches of all time could be fake. I would've quit entirely had it not been for that one fateful afternoon.
It was a typically brutal winter in Toronto which meant that a snowstorm would be picking up before the day was over. I thought it best to go to my favorite comic and stock up on my favorite books before the storm trapped me at home with my girlfriend. Marque Noir was different from other comic shops in that there exists a secret section of the store only a select few know about. Because I've been a loyal customer for a few years, the owner trusted in showing me the back room. I was hesitant at first to enter a secluded room alone with a man due to being a woman, but I figured he wouldn't try anything with customers still in the store.
What I saw in that room was the stuff of wonder. Several shelves were stocked with underground comics so obscure even the most hardcore archivists probably didn't know about them. The type of comics you can't even find on the internet. It was heaven on earth for a lost media obsessed girl like me. The original post mentioned Saki being an anime, but I was desperate for any type of media out there. What's fascinating is that there were also movies stocked with the comics. The cover art on each DVD case was incredibly low quality, to the point that I assumed the store owner hand-made them himself. There were no ISBNs or distributor info anywhere to be found so my theory seemed fairly likely all things considered.
I filled my bag with as many items as I could afford( which isn't a lot for a broke college student)  and excitedly swiped my card at the counter. The store owner gave me the weirdest of grins as I made my purchase. He seemed amused but almost in a mocking sort of way. He hardly ever emotes in the first place so that smile really caught me off guard.
I left the store and boarded the closest train to drop me off at the dorms. Though Halloween comes in the autumn, I feel like winter is the most ideal season to indulge in horror. The cold weather is like a reflection of the spine chilling fear I get whenever I read a good comic. I stepped inside my dorm room and immediately began browsing through my latest collection. They all looked so good I didn't know where to begin. As I rummaged through the pile of DVDs, I noticed something that threw me for a loop.
One DVD case was completely blank. The cover was pitch black and so was the back. There wasn't even anything on the spine. I couldn't imagine myself buying something like this so how it ended up with me was a mystery. Still, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't the least bit intrigued by it. There could've been literally anything on that disc and the only way to find out was to start the movie.
I waited for my girlfriend to return from campus before starting the movie. Emily's a cute brunette, but she has zero tolerance for horror. She always shrieks her head off whenever I play my movies in the living room. All that blood and gore drives her crazy. She greeted me with a kiss on the lips and then paused when she saw the devious smirk on my face. She already knew what I had in store for her. Emily, of course, protested but I pleaded with her to watch the movie with me. Seeing her scream like a child over on screen murder was sometimes more enjoyable than the movie itself. She remained firm in her stance against it but eventually broke down after enough of my begging. It feels good having things my way.
I quickly inserted the DVD into an old game station and stared at the screen with anticipation for what was about to start.  After several seconds of a blank screen, some Japanese text appeared with an English subtitle that read " Requiem of the lost girls." The title naturally left me curious so I watched on with excitement.
The scene then faded back to black and what I saw after that made my blood freeze solid.
Three schoolgirls in a bathroom.
All of them had miserable looks of utter despair.
The scene was unmistakable. It was a scenario I ran over in my head countless times. It was Saki Sanobashi, the anime searched years for! Having the legendary film before me after all this time was almost too good to be true. And to think it came from my favorite comic shop. I've been shopping for years now and never even had a hint something like Saki would be there.
Emily was confused as to why I was so excited so I told her we just discovered the holy grail of lost media. The gravity of the situation was unsurprisingly lost on her but she smiled anyway for my sake. We watched the movie unfold just like the legend went. The girls remained trapped in the bathroom and lamented their misfortune all the while. As the film progressed, the agony in their expressions became increasingly visceral. Their eyes looked so hollow, their skin was so pale. Emily clutched into my hand with a hint of anxiety in her eyes.
The tone of the video was much more somber than I expected. Seeing the girls take turns telling the others about their hopes and dreams, trying desperately to alleviate their situation, felt oddly melancholic. I was growing attached to these characters to the point I hoped they'd find a way despite that going against the lore. We eventually reached the part where the girls realized there truly was no way out of their situation...except for death.
Their deaths were just as horrid as I expected them to be. One girl goaded one of the others into drowning her in the sink and another clawed at her own neck with visceral detail. The most painful part of it all was the bloodcurdling scream the last girl emitted as she bashed her head against the wall. It was far more realistic than it had any right to be.
Despite all the fear, my heart raced with excitement. I had to write a blog post to let everyone know about my discovery! The internet would go wild once I told them the good news. I quickly went to my Tumblr to start writing, but the site wouldn't load. I tried other social media sites but nothing was working.
I tried stepping outside in the hall to get better reception but the door wouldn't budge. The knob didn't move at all no matter how hard I pulled. My girlfriend and I were both freaking out at this point. We tried opening windows, calling 911, and banging on doors, all of which were in vain. We were somehow completely severed from the outside world. I wondered how the hell was any of this possible when the image of the movie flashed into my mind.
We were trapped just like the girls in Saki Sanobashi. Was the film cursed? That seemed to be the only explanation. I should've trusted my gut instincts and never let that guy lead me to the backroom. I knew there was something off about him and now I fell into his trap. So far we've spent two weeks in this hellhole of an apartment. Food has long since run out and any sense of hope is dead. It pains me to see Emily's body as pale as winter, her eyes devoid of life. Neither of us can last much longer. I'm writing this document as a warning to anyone searching for Saki Sanobashi.
Stay the hell away from it. It is a cursed film that dooms its viewers the suffer the same fate as the girls in the bathroom. I imagine the curse will be lifted once we die and our belongings will be collected by our loved ones. Hopefully, they will see this document and spread the news. Or maybe they'll brush this off as the crazed rantings of a lunatic.
I honestly don't know anymore. All I can say is to stay safe and never attempt to watch this damned movie.

Shelved (prod. Anthony Q. Farrell).
CTV’s workplace sitcom set at a rundown Toronto Public Library branch offers some familiar jokes and laughs revolving around public bureaucracy and customer service through the point-of-view of its quirky set of offbeat employees. It’s an altogether familiar premise as it mines well-worn comic situations where both reoccurring characters and strangers can interact with the lead personalities in each episode. How the show explores class and diversity through its topical cringe humour feels particularly fresh.

Fu##in Up Neil Young and Crazy Horse (Reprise) (released 20 April 2024, for Record Store Day)
Initially this seems like the strangest Neil Young release in a multiple decade of oddball releases: a newly configured Crazy Horse (with Micah Nelson) doing reworkings of nine of the ten songs from Ragged Glory and all of the songs (save for the cover of Farmer John) have been given new titles. It doesn't pay to try to figure out the rationale behind this, you are either on board with Mr Young or you are not. Trying to figure out the why of anything he does is pointless.
However, some investigation reveals this not to be such a bizarre release after all. What it is is a live performance performed at the Rivoli in Toronto, Canada on Nov 4 2023. It was a big pay day private gig. Neil loves his live albums so this isn't such a shocking release knowing these facts as it was when I believed this was just a bizarre inexplicable Ragged Glory (Neil's Version). Actually, knowing these facts kind of makes this less exciting and suddenly, I'm not hugely interested like I was when I believed these were new studio versions!
Above you see the front and the back of the album. The album plastic has small pinholes in it, for reasons I fail to understand. Below, I show both photos again, the first being taken out of the sunshine so the holes don't appear. The second shows the back of the album without the plastic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next shot shows off the gatefold.
Tumblr media
Next up you will find a close up of that album long hype sticker.
Tumblr media
And we all know Neil loves his lithographs, so here is what it looks like. Exciting, eh?
Tumblr media
This is a double album so I'll show you the front and back of the custom inner sleeves for Record 1 followed by the labels on that first album.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next shots show you the front and back of the inner sleeve for the second record followed by both sides of the label. It feels quite odd to see Mazzeo artwork in color after years of seeing his stuff on Zuma in black and white.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This was pressed on clear vinyl. My now standard shots of the vinyl as a whole can be seen below followed by my Sunshine Shot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another big surprise is this album doesn't include one of those darn miniature inserts that looks like yellow lined paper trying to sell the buyer on joining Neil Young Archives. Instead, Neil has jazzed things and given us a full size insert promoting NYA. You can see it below.

12 Tips for Building an Effective Business Website
Tumblr media
Imagine having a business no one knows about. Could it succeed? A website is important; it’s like your business’s online front face, telling people what and how you offer. But just having a website isn’t enough. It would help if you made it work for you with the assistance of a professional web design company in Toronto. A well-designed and managed website can attract customers looking for what you provide. Once they see how you can help them, they’ll want to do business with you.
Here are 12 best tips that can help you build an effective business website-
1. Ensure your website is mobile-friendly: Having a mobile-responsive site is important for people spending over five hours daily on mobile devices. Users who struggle to navigate or read your site on their phones might switch to a competitor. Plus, a poor mobile experience can lower your site’s search engine ranking, making it harder for potential customers to find you on Google.
1. Make your website easy to discover: Opt for a domain name that explains your company or its services. Incorporate SEO strategies like keyword research and content marketing with the help of Website Designers in Toronto to boost website traffic.
1. Craft customer-oriented content: Offer valuable information that engages viewers and builds trust. Consider your audience’s perspective and tailor content accordingly. Outsourcing a company for website development in Toronto is an option if this isn’t your forte.
1. Simplify navigation: Try to limit your top-level menu to five clearly labelled tabs with related pages organized under them. Offer a straightforward way to return to the homepage from any page. Avoid clutter on your pages; excessive information may overwhelm readers. Strike a balance between text and graphics for a clean layout.
1. Ensure accuracy: Incorrect information, be it outdated product details or typos, can push away potential consumers. Proofread each page before publishing and periodically check for updates.
1. Personalize the experience: Invest in creating a high-quality online presence that aligns with your brand image. Personalize your About Us page with team photos to connect with customers with the help of the best website developers in Toronto.
1. Speed matters: A slow-loading site can drive away users: Keep your software updated, optimize media for faster loading, and choose a reliable web host.
1. Include an interesting call to action (CTA) on each page: Motivate users to take the right and required actions, such as calling your company, signing up for services, or purchasing products. Make CTAs noticeable, preferably above the fold, to prompt immediate action.
1. Keep the design simple: Limit the use of fonts, colours, and distractions like GIFs. Short paragraphs and bullet points enhance readability. Prioritize mobile responsiveness for higher search engine rankings.
1. Incorporate SEO best practices: Make sure your website ranks high on search engines like Google by optimizing content for relevant keywords. Organic search traffic is cost-efficient and more effective in the long term than paid ads.
1. Foster User Engagement: Allocate space on your website for user interaction. Whether through virtual assistance, a review section, or feedback forms, enabling user engagement enhances the overall user experience, setting your website apart from competitors.
1. Keep Contact Info Up to Date: Regularly update your website’s contact information, including business addresses, email IDs, and office phone numbers. Maintaining accurate contact details is essential for staying connected with customers and ensuring accessibility.
