I enter the cyberpunk 2077 tag. I see a post about the game not being 'punk' because of all the triple A gaming company typical shit 'means it's not punk'. I roll my eyes so hard I exit the tag.
Points, context, rebuttal, whatever beloooow (I am not reblogging post because I don't want to attract hate to OP, but I am writing this cause I'm sick of seeing it).
Yeah triple A dev treatment fucking sucks. It sucks CDPR vowed to do different and didn't but that is missing a bunch of context. Here comes the context -
I've been following CDPR since about 2010-ish. They've always held onto older era gaming attitudes and respect their consumers. I guess in a way they were still made for an older era around the Cyberpunk release for the following reasons.
They shot themselves in the foot with their own marketing. Hiring a big name may have done that. If you look at the teaser trailer for Cyberpunk 2077 on announcement it basically says release date wise 'its done when it's done'. Being part of that older era they want to put out a COMPLETE game. Well tested. They came from a time where game updates were a LUXURY and that's why I trusted them to release a good product.
Marketing however got so big that it exited the realm of core fans and into the general public (derogatory). When they announced another delay, I was chill. I trusted them. Shit takes time man, whatever it takes to make it good AND treat your employees well bro. General public however was out for blood, sending death threats, pulling preorders.
There's this fine line you have to tread in marketing. Too little hype, no one knows about your product. Too much hype, you skyrocket expectations. Hype at the wrong time - you end up peaking at the wrong moment and end up losing momentum for release. You can see the conundrum here. They were arguably in the skyrocketed expectations and the losing momentum risk region.
So they did crunch time for release. In a way they had to. I mean sure they could have been 'punk' like OP suggested and said fuck you to the non-core fanbase but unfortunately punk doesn't pay bills. It doesn't keep the lights on. It doesn't keep your employees employed. It doesn't stop them from getting sent death threats for a delay.
So they rushed it out, it bombed. That sucked BUT it brought them peace. Because while everyone was making fun of them and quickly forgetting about it to go laugh at the next bomb of the month - it meant they could actually get onto fixing/finishing their game because people like ME knew them. It wouldn't be left as is. Also let them work at a less insane pace.
I started playing it (I finally had a PC that could handle it) right before the Edgerunners release and the public reboot. It was a fucking. Solid. Game. I studied game design and if I didn't get sick and had to stop this game would have been my goddamn final paper. There are so many good choices narratively and mechanically to the point you can't separate the two. It was everything I expected.
They worked hard to get there. We currently live in an era where entertainment is treated like fast food and people can be fucking incoherent when they're told to have patience. Why do you think so many games release in a scuffed state? Why do you think this new 'redemption arc' story in the game industry has become increasingly common? Because Devs keep getting sent DEATH THREATS just for doing work. That's fucking insane. No wonder they're working overtime and sleeping at the office because the general public has turned gamedev into an industry that basically uses psychological torture as a whip to get your game out 'on time'.
Yes there are absolutely horrible triple A gamedev companies, usually under the stable of a larger company (EA, Activision etc. take your pick) but CDPR ain't that. In my eyes their hand was forced.
You know what is punk? Going with a little, 'unpopular' (basically not DnD) ttrpg written by a black man and building a new IP and experience from it - AND having him on board and getting his active input during development. Because dear lord current media in general seems to be allergic to taking risks and new IPs.
You know what else is punk? Releasing free DLC updates that would be a micro transaction otherwise (no I am not talking about Phantom Liberty and I argue that's an 'expansion' though I guess no one uses that word now) and putting the goddamn pdf of the ttrpg handbook they based it off with the game download. Putting stickers in physical releases (going by my witcher experience), giving you goddamn HIGH RESOLUTION IMAGES of in game posters to print for yourself FOR. FREE. No one DOES THAT anymore.
Also arguably putting out Cyberpunk is punk just in the narrative it tells in the goddamn first place - especially in the current climate, but I think I've made my point here.
Also my last point, in big letters because it's driving me fucking insane:
CYBERPUNK. IS. A. GENRE. A GENRE. THEY DID NOT INVENT CYBERPUNK. BLADE RUNNER. NEUROMANCER. ALTERED CARBON. IT'S A GENRE. THE PUNK ELEMENT IS IN THE NARRATIVE. IT'S NOT SOME KIND OF 'STATEMENT' ABOUT THEMSELVES, IT'S A GENRE AND ALSO THE LITERAL TITLE OF THE TTRPG THE THING WAS BASED OFF IN THE FIRST PLACE.
Anyway I'm sick of seeing CDPR being thrown under the bus and being treated in ways that will actively end up affecting future development. I really, really hope they haven't been too affected but if they end up feeling forced into modern day gamedev cycles and all the bullshit that goes with it ... well I know why.
And it starts with people who spout shit like this.

Is it nova choom?
Tumblr media
"Is it nova choom" also translates to "is it awesome mate?" As the name suggests Cyberpunk 2077 has a unique and jazzy lingo within the game making it CD Projeckt Red's most promising release. However the game was announced in 2013 as a revolutionary and groundbreaking open-world adventure. People were kept waiting in anticipation as the PR teams let loose tidbits of information here and there. After being released almost 7 years later on 16th of April 2020, gamers around the world couldn't wait to get their hands on a copy of the game. Well who wouldn't have thought about it, the hype around the release was sensational. They even have a character known as Johnny Silverhand who was voiced and modeled after the revered actor Keanu Reeves. The game in itself was very well thought out with players heralding the success of the game, then came the bugs.
Players felt hopeless as their games would be ridden with bugs and glitches, often more than not game breaking. Forcing the majority of players to wipe their progress completely in order to have a shot to get further than they last did. The public response was initially dismay which ramped up to unbridled rage and public outcries. The reviews on apps like Steam and Epic Games were colorful to say the least, and chock full of criticism and insults. The public was especially enraged at CD Projekt Red after the developers owned up and accepted that the game was not ready to be released to the public. Gamers were disgusted at the studio as they understood it to be some form of a money grab in order to turn out profits and then abandon the game.
The development of such an ambitious title would understandably take time, it was of no help when people started sending the developers death threats after delays from the release date of Cyberpunk 2077 which went up to 7 years and even then delivered an unfinished and literally unplayable title. Even Sony pulled the game from its stores and shelves and gave people who bought it a full refund. The studio had no other option but pull the games as well from other distributors and put it back into development. After another two years in 2022 they patched and put the game back into rotation. This release fixed the majority of the issues that were caused by the first release and also brought in more features than the previous one. This thoughtful albeit expensive decision taken by CD Projeckt Red was well received by the public and the studio which was quite reputed due to the back to back successes of The Witcher series somewhat gained its reputation back. But then again what if it was all a ploy by the studio? To get the people dissappointed at first and them win them over? Guess we'll never know.

Jumping through the Cyberpunk 2077 Obstacle Run. The developers spent most of the next year fixing them and optimizing the game, which delayed the work on the expansion. #When does elyon release update#
The new patch for the new 1.6 version, called Edgerunners Update, will be the final update for the PS4 and Xbox One version of Cyberpunk 2077.

The Phantom City expansion is for Google Stadia, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Cyberpunk 2077, but certainly not PlayStation 4. The trailer likewise shows a luring piece of gameplay. Keanu Reeves confirmed live on Night City Wire that he is leaving to speak with Johnny in the new addition. By the way, the player’s character swore the oath to serve the New United States of America faithfully, while a voice of Johnny Silverhand convinced them this was a bad idea. But still, some of these facts have been explored. Septem9:00 AM 30 Remember back when Elyon locked in a launch date of September 29th It turns out that this was more of a soft-lock, really, giving Kakao the right to change its mind about both the release and the business model. There are no many details in the published trailer. This documentary is called Phantom Liberty, a novel for the Cyberpunk 2077, based in New York City. It is called Phantom Liberty and is scheduled to be released in 2023. According to Kakao Games, there are no plans to change the way the cash store works.CD Projekt Red announced the release of the first major addition to Cyberpunk 2077.
#When does elyon release full#
The fear that switching to full free-to-play may promote more pay-to-win features in the game is addressed in both the Twitter post and the formal release. "It's apparent that 2021 will be the year of the MMO," Kakao Games said, "with an outstanding lineup of titles in the genre due to arrive in the following weeks and months, including some excellent entrants." "While we believe Elyon has a distinct and competitive position among them all, we also recognize that the time commitment necessary for any MMORPG is not always suitable with a wide range of options." As a result, our committed team has chosen to make what we believe are important adjustments to our business model after careful study. In addition, rather than a phased launch, all players who pre-order a package will have the same 72-hour headstart. Until the modifications are completed, new package purchases will be temporarily prohibited, and the higher the package tier, the more premium Rubies will be supplied. The perfect class for those who want a more versatile playstyle. If a purchase was made before September 10, 2021, the business has previously indicated that gamers can keep their packages with additional premium money added to replace the main game, or they can seek a full refund. Elyons Newest Class, Soulbringer, Arrives On September 7. Those who have already pre-ordered Elyon need not be concerned. Despite the huge monetization change, Kakao Games stated it intends to maintain the coins save as-is. Anyone who pre-ordered the bottom recreation, for example, will now obtain 2,000 Rubies to apply withinside the coins save. If you have pre-bought Elyon, you may both choose a reimbursement or permit Kakao Games roll your buy over as in-recreation Rubies.

When will fable 4 release

#WHEN WILL FABLE 4 RELEASE SERIES#
#WHEN WILL FABLE 4 RELEASE SERIES#
Take confidence in Playground Games, says Phil Spencerįable 4 is being created by Playground Games, the studio perhaps best known for its work on the Forza Horizon series but Phil Spencer wants fans to have confidence in the studio. In our opinion, the kind of sword-and-spells combat of The Witcher 3, one of the bestselling video games of all time, would be a perfect template for a Fable game, especially given how similar some of the in-game spells are. As reported by PCGamesN (opens in new tab), gameplay designer Paweł Kapała is heading up the combat at Fable developer Playground Games, with his LinkedIn page confirming the role entails "designing and implementing combat in Fable." Though we don’t know a huge amount about Fable at the moment, the idea that it’s been in the works for multiple years gives us some hope that we could learn more in the near future.įable 4's combat could feel like The WitcherĪ developer from CD Projekt RED (The Witcher series, Cyberpunk 2077) will be working on the game's combat system. That means the game’s been in development for at least four years and that development possibly started just a year after series creator, Lionhead Studios, was closed. In a recent tweet, a developer at Playground Games who is working on the game celebrated “four years of working on Fable”. As a highly-anticipated Xbox exclusive that we haven't heard all that much about in recent months, it certainly seems like the perfect time for an update.įable 4 has been in development for longer than you might have expected. There may be no E3 taking place in 2022 but there will still be an Xbox and Bethesda showcase on June 12, with news on “titles coming from Xbox Game Studios, Bethesda, and our partners around the world”.Ī runtime for the show hasn’t been confirmed just yet and Xbox hasn’t revealed exactly which games will be featured at the show either but we sincerely hope that Fable 4 will be one of the games shown during the conference. The trailer doesn't reveal a whole lot, but does suggest that the game could be set well before the later entries in the series as we don't get as much of a sense of a Victorian-style industrial revolution as we did in Fable 3's setting. Instead, it appears that Fable 4 will have a medieval fantasy setting perhaps more like the original game, with the trailer showing a sword, fairies, overgrown toadstools and greedy toads. Right now, only one Fable trailer has been released: the world premiere announcement trailer. It's unknown if it'll arrive on Xbox One consoles, since we've seen big cross-gen games like Halo Infinite and Forza Horizon 5, but we're not holding out hope as Microsoft hasn't confirmed anything. As an Xbox exclusive, Fable 4 will release for Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and PC, where it'll be available on Xbox Game Pass from day one. We do, however, know the platforms we can expect Fable 4 to land on. That's backed up by the June 2022 Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase focusing on games launching "in the next twelve months," and Fable wasn't present. The earliest we'd expect it is late 2023, though 2024 is more likely.Īt the very least, Phil Spencer hinted during an IGN podcast (opens in new tab) that we'll get it before The Elder Scrolls 6, though that game doesn't have a release date yet either and isn't expected to land sometime after Starfield's release (which has since been delayed to 2023). No release date or release window has been set for Fable 4 yet.

FORSPOKEN PRE ORDER PHYSICAL PC
FORSPOKEN PRE ORDER PHYSICAL PC
Forspoken will be releasing on the PlayStation 5 and PC on May 24, 2022. If you want this game, you’ll have to pay that price on either platform. In addition to the newly unveiled gameplay trailer that debuted at The Game Awards 2021, Square Enix has also unveiled the Forspoken release date as well as its pre-order details. Unfortunately, Forspoken has carried that insane R1,429 price tag over to Steam too. Usually, PC gamers can at least save a bit of cash on certain games too. In search of a way home, Frey must use her newfound magical abilities to traverse sprawling landscapes and battle monstrous creatures. I don’t know about you but these prices are starting to look very scary. Forspoken follows the journey of Frey, a young New Yorker transported to the beautiful and cruel land of Athia. The most expensive upcoming PS5 exclusive games now include: This is yet another massive jump in pricing compared to other games with Standard and Deluxe Edition variants. Forspoken also comes with a Deluxe Edition that will set you back R1,879. There’s nothing fancy to look at, no digital items to gloat over or anything of the sort. Keep in mind that this is a standard edition game. A year later and the new R1,429 price point might be the norm going forward for new upcoming PS5 exclusives. This is what happened last year when the PS5 was released. New games are all set at a certain price until the rate fluctuated and new pre-orders are listed. If our rates are low then we can expect our digital games to sell for a bit more. Usually, when games go up for pre-order, they are adjusted to the current exchange rate. Sadly, this new Forspoken listing might be a sign of things to come. There isn’t another game on the PlayStation Store set at this price.Įven the upcoming Horizon Forbidden West is set to Sony’s standard R1,369 price point. However, Forspoken has now broken through the R1,400 mark for the base edition. In fact, the most expensive Standard Edition PS5 games from Sony at the moment are Returnal and the upcoming Gran Turismo 7. At launch, Sony marked up most of its first-party lineup to around R1,369. READ MORE: These Stalker 2 Screenshots Show Off The Power of Unreal Engine 5Įxpensive PS5 games are nothing new in South Africa. A standard edition copy of Forspoken will set you back a whopping R1,429. This morning when Forspoken went up for pre-order in SA, gamers were shocked to see that the upcoming RPG by Square Enix is now the most expensive new standard edition game for PS5 ever to be released in the region. Looking for a way back, you must learn the ways of this magical land, as well as your own new powers. The latest fuel hike must be affecting the prices of digital games in South Africa too (just kidding). Play as Frey, another formidable female protagonist, as you find yourself in a new land, far away from home. What is Forspoken?Īn action RPG, Forspoken is similar in style and story to Horizon Forbidden West. So, looking at the facts, we can only think this is absolutely the right decision for Luminous Productions and Square Enix. Meanwhile, Elden Ring is now one of the biggest games of all time, having suffered its own production delays. Of course, CD Projekt Red pushed Cyberpunk 2077 out before it was ready to extensive criticism. And then there’s just the sanity of the developers to think about as well, such as Mojang did with the release of The Warden. However, it seems the general consensus among sensible and logical gamers is that we’d prefer to suffer delays to get a better quality product. It’s a difficult balance between getting criticised for a poor quality game or for extensive delays. Alongside this, gaming fans are more critical than ever. T302V6h4Np- Forspoken March 7, 2022Ī number of companies have delayed the release of their games over the last two years, thanks to the global pandemic causing problems for both staffing and physical production. A message from the #Forspoken Development Team.

#Starfield pc release Pc#
The phrase “Next Cyberpunk” was circulating in the office, and morale was likely low as a result. According to Jason, the development team was quite concerned about committing to a November 11th release date, based on the progress they had made at the time. Before last year’s E3, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier talked with a few people involved with the game, and came away with these impressions.
#Starfield pc release Pc#
11, 2022 on both PC and Xbox Series X S (and Xbox Game Pass). For now, Starfield still doesn't have an actual launch date but it's slated to arrive at some point in the first half of 2023.When it does release, it will come to both Xbox Series X and PC. Though the trailer leaked early, it was confirmed by Bethesda at the E3 showcase on June 13. During Xbox’s E3 presentation but leaked early by Washington Post, Bethesda announced that Starfield has a release date of Nov. From Bethesda Gaming Studios, the developer behind Skyrim and Fallout 4, the trailer reveals that Starfield will release on Nov. It has also been reported that Starfield may have met the same fate as Cyberpunk 2077, had it not been delayed to the first half of 2023. A trailer for Bethesda's upcoming sci-fi RPG, Starfield, leaked online ahead of the 2021 Xbox/Bethesda E3 showcase. The game will not feature any social or multiplayer elements like Fallout 76, and would instead be a single-player experience. According to him, the Creation Engine has been rebuilt for Starfield, just as it has done for previous titles. Starfield is an upcoming action role-playing video game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. He also stated that the release date for Starfield will most likely be sometime during the month of March. Rather, he intended to say that the mechanics currently weren’t smooth and balanced based on what he had heard. Youtuber KingFanMan brought forth this information, although he cautioned that when he said “buggy”, he didn’t imply that there’s something wrong with the game. A dedicated wiki for Starfield has been established as a placeholder on their site. Now the well-known modding site is officially preparing for Starfield’s release.

Previously, it was reported that development on Starfield may have been struggling due to some of its mechanics being half-baked. Nexus Mods has been been one of the prime modding directories for Bethesda games since 2001 now hosting over 60,000 dedicated mods for Skyrim alone.

Wlad's music will be mixed by Adam Schmidt, a renowned sound engineer known for his work on Inception, The Dark Knight Rises, Pirates of the Caribbean, and others. The score is being written by the game director himself and will be recorded with Budapest Symphony Orchestra. DARQ is a project started by 5-time ASCAP Award winning composer Wlad Marhulets, and since the very beginning the game was designed around music. Music and sound play a very important role in the game.

Next-generation versions of DARQ: Complete Edition (Xbox Series X|S and PS5), along with the Switch version, will be delayed until early 2021.Īnyone who purchases a copy of DARQ: Complete Edition on Xbox One or PS4 will get a free upgrade to the optimized next-generation version for PS5 or Xbox Series X|S consoles, an offer that will be available for the entirety of 2021. The goal is to make the player like being there, even though being there involves facing their fears.ĭARQ: Complete edition is on track to be released in December 2020 on PC, Xbox One and PS4, with an exact release date to be announced in the coming weeks. Elegance is the key word in DARQ's art direction - it serves as a means of seduction, or an invitation for the player to step in and develop and emotional connection with the experience as they progress. The game is designed to be a moving artistic experience. Once the player knows that a jump scare could happen, they are more likely to stay on the edge of their seats for a very long time. DARQ is more about building tension and anticipation in between jump scares. However, this isn't a game that is all about jump scares. Jump scares in DARQ serve one purpose: they help establish that in a dream world anything can happen at any time. Instead, he has to rely on careful planning to avoid getting detected. He has no chance of winning in an open confrontation, since the creatures he will encounter are much more powerful and faster than him.

Cyberpunk release date | Cyberpunk 2077 release delayed: Here’s all you need to know about the new launch date One of the most awaited open-world games of 2020, Cyberpunk 2077, has once again been hit with a further delayed.

Note
Do you have any opinions on the Cyberpunk 2077 launch?
The writing was on the wall when they announced the delay after going gold. The warning signs were already there before then - CDPR is fairly well-known in the industry for their sweatshop working conditions and pay, the game had been in development since the PS3/X360 console generation, and there had been multiple delays - but the post-gold delay really confirmed that it was going to be a hot, buggy mess. So let’s talk about it for a moment.
Tumblr media
First, Cyberpunk’s extremely long development cycle basically meant that the leadership couldn’t figure out what they wanted the game to be for a very long time. Nobody plans to take eight years to build a game - the video game market changes and evolves way too quickly for that to happen. When Cyberpunk was announced, League of Legends hadn’t hit its peak yet and everybody was starting to fall off of the big AAA MMOG boom. Hearthstone didn’t exist. Fortnite didn’t exist. Players were all super excited to play COD: BLOPS 2. Having a dev cycle take longer than 4 years generally means the dev team wasted a lot of time building things, discovering they didn’t work, and then throwing them out. The finished Cyberpunk isn’t the sum of eight years of work, it’s the sum of maybe three years of work and five additional years of cut systems and content.
Tumblr media
Second, CDPR is already known in the industry for their brutal working conditions. They’re a crunch culture studio and there have been confirmations from one of the devs on Cyberpunk that they’ve been crunching on it since at least June of 2019 despite public assurances that it wasn’t mandatory. These kind of working conditions are nothing new; they did it for the Witcher 3, they did it for the Witcher 2, and there’s no reason to think they won’t continue in the future since it clearly continues to work for them. Unfortunately, the effect of the exhausted dev team gets multiplied by the systemic effects of delaying the game as well.
Tumblr media
Finally, Cyberpunk was also delayed several times - in January, then in June, then again in November. Delays are never planned into the schedule - they are responses to shit hitting the fan. They only occur when the producers realize that there is no way that they’ll be able to hit their target that they delay the game. There are several reasons for this, primarily budgetary - changing release dates greatly affects the marketing campaign, business deals, as well as the overall development cost of the game. Thus, delays are usually a last resort - the added time is the minimum estimated time to reach the goal by crunching super hard to get past the finish line. The fact that they had to delay three separate times meant that they blew their estimates and schedules three times and had to course-correct each time. This is why the effect of the death march crunch mentioned previously gets multiplied - the devs have already been on a year-long deathmarch crunch and are exhausted, causing their work to suffer. Delaying on top of that means that their work will continue to suffer.
Tumblr media
Cyberpunk is the result of multiple contributing factors - years in development hell, a brutal sweatshop studio culture, and all exacerbated by pivoting due to delays changing the schedule. It is the result of bad planning multiplied by developer exhaustion, compounded by sudden scope and schedule changes. All of the warning signs were already there if you knew where to look. I actually would have been very surprised if this wasn’t the resultant state of Cyberpunk at launch.

there's a new report from Jason Schreier (the most egotistical but also most important person in games journalism right now) about CD Projekt Red's work conditions on Cyberpunk 2077 and it's WORSE than you thought!
it includes!
multiple developers breaking up from their families because how much crunch they were doing
people making less than 700$ per month with the future promise of revenue share to come (FUCKING GEARBOX LEVEL SHIT)
one dev explaining his average week was five 14 hour days
oh and this absolutely horrific nugget that was confirmed by MULTIPLE devs:
"One CDPR developer told their manager that they didn't want to work overtime, as their CEO had said would be OK. Fine, their manager said, but one of their other coworkers would just have to work extra hours to make up for them."
to which one twitter comedian said:
Tumblr media
(ID: Neon Genesis Evangelion, Shinji looks at injured Rei)
(It's an anime joke don't worry about it, i promise its v funny)
IT SUCKS. THIS IS HORRIFIC. This is Gearbox again. It's Naughty Dog again. It's Rockstar again.
BUT YOU KNOW WHAT? AT LEAST BORDERLANDS 3 WAS SUCCESSFUL. AT LEAST TLOU2 AND RED DEAD WERE SUCCESSFUL. even if TLOU2 sucks
sighs for ten minutes straight
Look, this is just the thing. High fidelity graphics are destroying the people who make video games. And it doesn't have to be that way! When devs give a pass to "realistic" graphics, they almost automatically, dramatically reduce the amount of labor needed for their games. How important is it to you to see the individual pores on your character's face glisten with HDR, honestly?
SIGH
Individually, there is not a lot I can do as a single consumer to help this industry. What I can do is make this, like, my Core Issue. I read everything I can about games labor and try to remember as much as I can, and to yell loudly when really egregious shit comes up like this.
If I could make a deal with the devil, I would erase my personal favorite game, New Vegas, from history if it meant these conditions stopped. But I can't, so instead I give my money to devs I know minimize or wholly avoid crunch, and I talk loudly about the devs who do crunch, so other people can make an informed decision on the matter.
Not all studios are like this. Dead Cells was made by a co-op that gives everyone equitable pay. Supergiant infamously does not crunch and enforces vacation time lest people let it pile up. It’s hard to get details from Japanese studios, but allegedly Animal Crossing was delayed to avoid overworking people. Amplitude and Paradox supposedly do not crunch since they broadly control their own release dates. There are others, though admittedly not a lot that explicitly come out to say this.
(Hey remember when CDPR came out to promise no crunch? Fucking liars.)
There is no ethical consumption, blah blah, we know. But when possible, we should support the people who avoid the worse offenses, to show them that it is appreciated and that crunch is not necessary to make it in this industry.
And pray to god they start unionizing. My money is still on Ubisoft being the first.

Night City, I barely remember ya
I beat Cyberpunk 2077 last month, and honestly, I haven’t thought about Cyberpunk 2077 that much since.
It wasn’t supposed to be like this. CD Projekt Red’s follow-up to The Witcher 3 was meant to be the sort of game that would stick in your mind after completion. It was promoted over eight years of hype stemming from its initial 2013 reveal as a example of CD Projekt’s infamous “vodka and Slavic magic” - a behemoth destined to change open world RPGs forever. But in the roughly 12 weeks since its release, the stuff that’s happened to Cyberpunk 2077, including its delisting from the Playstation store for being chock full of bugs and the theft of its source code by hackers, has been more cyberpunk than the actual game.
I was one of those people super hyped for this game when it was first announced. I mean, the Witcher franchise left an indelible impression on me; how could I not be psyched to see its devs tackle one of my favorite sci-fi genres? But my hype deflated over the years, largely due to tales of terrible crunch emerging from CD Projekt’s studios and social media marketing that was ill-advised at best and transphobic at worst. Everything seemed to slowly hint that the game’s vision of “cyberpunk” - a genre that can tell incredible futuristic tales of social upheaval and marginalized peoples - would be mostly style with not so much substance.
Despite me keeping my fingers crossed, the end product is pretty much what I feared - and I guess I should’ve known, since the official sourcebook for Cyberpunk 2020, the tabletop RPG that CD Projekt Red used as inspiration, actually lists “style over substance” as one of its rules.
Cyberpunk 2077’s main story revolves around a merc who dreams of big time heists in Night City named V. After a heist goes south, V ends up absorbing a biochip made by big bad corporation Arasaka that features the captured personality of rockstar-turned-terrorist Johnny Silverhand, played by Keanu Reeves - who, to be fair, does a good job with the material he’s given. Cue a bunch of quests that revolve around V and Johnny coming to terms with each other, taking down Arasaka and figuring out how to separate the chip from V’s brain.
In theory, this sounds like a cool way to explore the very cyberpunk themes of identity and what it means to have a corrupt company preserve a human soul beyond its organic shell. In reality, though, the story’s a surface level examination of these concepts, and Johnny Silverhand remains a massive dick throughout most of the game, only becoming relatable if players give him the benefit of the doubt - which they’re expected to do because he’s played by Keanu Reeves.
Johnny’s animosity towards Arasaka is also never completely outlined. He - and most other characters in Night City - keep telling V that corporations are awful because they disregard human rights and destroy the environment, but we never get many chances to see for ourselves how Arasaka and similar companies, like Militech or Kang Tao, actually do this. Arasaka does kidnap Johnny’s ex-girlfriend and is behind the tech that transfers his soul to a biochip, yes, but Johnny also threatens to destroy them at all of his shows and eventually sets off a bomb in their headquarters. Not that I’m siding with the corporation, but for much of the game we’re expected to treat them as the number one enemy simply because other characters say so, which is very much a “show, don’t tell” missed opportunity. If anything, Arasaka’s portrayal feels more like a vestige of the cyberpunk genre’s unfortunate maturation during the 1980s, where the fear of Japanese conglomerates taking over the world was common and a future where Asian companies were all-powerful instead of Western ones seemed like a dystopia.
Cyberpunk 2077 is very much caught in that yesteryear mold, featuring elements that might have been progressive in the 1980s but seem passé now. For a game that relied on questionable representation of trans people in its marketing, there were no notable trans NPCs that I came across, and even though there’s a robust character creation system where you actually can make a trans person, the game makes the troubling decision to only offer binary pronouns tied to V’s voice. Despite the fact that many of the best modern cyperbunk works deal with body augmentation and the line between man and machine, most of the physical modifications you can pay for at Night City’s “ripperdoc” facilities are niche features that only offer minimal stat boosts, with only two major ones that I know of - the mantis blades and gorilla arms - actually causing extensive changes to V’s looks. And finally, while there are tons of characters of color in the game, ranging from the Haitian Voodoo Boys gang to V’s “friendly ethnic friend™” Jackie Welles, most of them are varying degrees of stereotypical. For instance, Goro Takemura, an ex-Arasaka employee, sends you text messages reminiscent of haiku at one point because he’s Japanese and has to talk like a formal, honorable samurai or something.
If you’re able to look past these issues - along with the myriad of bugs that Cyberpunk 2077 shipped with - there’s still the niggling feeling that this game could have been so much more. The signs of a troubled development process are numerous, and there are Reddit threads packed with still-visible remnants - like useless combat skill perks and an entire metro system - that were part of gameplay elements gutted at some point in order for those overworked CD Projekt Red programmers to make a long-delayed release date. Even mainstay stuff in the open world genre - like the police chases common in the Grand Theft Autos - are absent, and Cyberpunk 2077’s 2018 demo, chock full of promised features that never made it into the final product, has to be one of the most notorious bits of smoke ‘n mirrors “gameplay” in recent memory.
Perhaps most bothersome is the feeling that a lot of your choices don’t seem to matter all that much in Cyberpunk 2077, which once touted itself as “a full-fledged RPG, not a shooter with RPG elements,” but ends up feeling more like the latter than the former. The game’s three different lifepaths - nomad, streetkid and corpo - only amount to about thirty minutes of unique playtime at the start and a few different dialogue options. The vehicle combat sequences that punctuate key missions are largely scripted, looking cool but offering little consequences depending on what V aims at. The side quests I encountered had minimal branching paths, and the only time the main story opened up to offer some real choice was in the game’s final chapter. Considering that CD Projekt once developed The Witcher 2 - a 2011 game that branches dramatically at its halfway mark to the point where a lot of folks insist that you need to play it twice in order to feel satisfied - Cyberpunk 2077 feels like a step back.
And yet, despite all of these criticisms, I still put nearly 80 hours into the game over the course of December, January and February. You don’t do that for something that’s patently unfun, so let me be clear - there is an entertaining experience buried beneath an avalanche of unfulfilled potential here. Driving on my Akira-esque bike through Night City’s slums as the game’s best song bumped on the radio, taking out legions of baddies with my mantis blades and relishing in the game’s extensive photo mode (as you can probably tell by my screenshots above) was a good time. In spite of his assholery, I did feel something akin to attachment for that bastard Johnny Silverhand by the finale, and there were a few key moments - like when I was scuba diving in the ocean with my girlfriend Judy, looking at the remains of a town destroyed by the land seizing machinations of corporations - that felt like this game had something to say beyond “bang bang gunplay and neon aesthetic.”
But at the end of the day, while I do feel moderately interested in someday checking out Cyberpunk Red (the newest iteration of this franchise’s tabletop RPG), CD Projekt’s seven-year-hyped-up behemoth has largely faded from my brain one month after beating it. On Twitter, I’ve seen Cyberpunk 2077 described as something akin to a flashy Netflix series with lots of fanfare and flair but not much else - and I can’t really argue with that statement.
Night City was supposed to be the stuff of a long-term relationship. Instead, it feels more like a fling.

In a world where way too many god damn publishers have a policy of “Ship it now, patch it later” when their games clearly need more time to be finished, I am absolutely happy that Cyberpunk 2077 was delayed from April to September.
Delaying the game instead of just rushing it out to meet the previous release date and patching it after launch to fix whatever bugs still remained is absolutely the right choice, and I find it kind of infuriating that people online are bitching and moaning out of it.
Guys. Quit acting like you don’t already have a backlog of games you’ve yet to play. Go do something else while you wait, and you’ll end up with an even better game when Cyberpunk 2077 finally releases.
Basically, stop being spoiled children about the whole thing.
