Several months ago, I did development work on Cloud Empress, a standalone, Nausicaa-inspired TTRPG by worlds of watt. It's full, beautiful rulebook recently went up on DriveThruRPG FOR FREE so I think folks should check it out. I'm really proud to have taken part in the project and think the end result is tremendous! Plus, there's so much more coming for it in the near future!

Gourmet Street: Dungeon Meshi meets God of Cookery
With Dungeon Meshi being in public eye again with the Netflix series, I thought it would be a good time to shoutout again about Gourmet Street, my free (tips appreciated) Street Food Fantasy zine! Big thanks to our wonderful artist and layout man @feralindiecharlie
A New Setting! - Gourmet Street, a collection of scattered and bizarrely connected alleyways, it seems to pop up in any settlement large enough to begin thinking of itself as a city. Stacked high in wood carts, laid out on intricate rugs, swimming in a myriad of sauces, food is the name of the game on Gourmet Street.
ONE MILLION Food Vendors and Menus! - Never eat the same thing twice! Generate from 8,000 possible unique food vendors and LITERALLY ONE MILLION possible dishes; ranging from Soft-shelled Crabman Sandwiches with Tzatziki sauce and Egg Coffee, to Myconid Zapiekanka in Pesto with a shot of Absinthe!
Food Factions! - From the hyper-radical (and slightly deranged) Neuvo Gastro-Alchemists, to the fanatical and militant Vinegar Knights, the food factions each come with their own wants, goals, and boons, IF you choose to serve them...
A One-Page Adventure: ESCAPE FROM GOURMET STREET! Help a pair (or trio) of star-crossed lovers escape from Gourmet Street in a Snake-and-Ladders inspired chase! Fend off rival lovers, food cart brawls and escaped dishes as you dash through the alleys of Gourmet Street!
And More! Monsters, magic items, and cookbooks for both Players and GMs to use and abuse!

200 13th-Century Names
I've made a thing and thought others might be able to get some use out of it. If you just want the d100 tables, scroll down to the cut and skip my rambling as to what this list is. Short version, it's a d100 table of male names and a d100 table of female names, taken from 13th-century English records and trimmed to minimize names that were used within the last 140-odd years.
While working on my Dungeon23 project (updates collected here, by the way), I was looking for names for my NPCs, and stumbled upon the Henry III Fine Rolls as a source. This is a digitization and indexing of records from 13th-century England that include a lot of personal names. It contains references to a database they made that sorts these names by popularity and other factors, but the database apparently hasn't been maintained, because it's gone. For a while, I was just picking names from articles about that database, but I started to worry I was going to run out (due to my tendency to name any corpses of dead adventurers in the dungeon just in case someone likes to cast speak with dead). So I went to their index of names, which is great if you're looking for a specific person, but not useful if you just want a list of personal names, and decided to use their data to make a couple d100 tables for myself.
I went through the index and typed all the names into a spreadsheet. Then, to give the list a more medieval feel, I sorted them by how often they appeared in the Social Security Administration's data on baby names. (I know that's a bit US-centric, but to my knowledge there is no global database to use for this purpose.) Then I removed all the ones that appeared most often on the baby names list -- I figured if you were rolling on a table of medieval names, you'd be a bit disappointed if you got "John" or "Mary". (Incidentally, the following names appear both in the Fine Rolls and on the SSA's list of the top 10 (male and female, so 20 actually) baby names for 2021: Emma, Oliver, James, Ava, William, Isabella, and Henry.) I used the data going back to 1880 for thoroughness.
In the case of male names, this meant I was able to remove all the names that appeared in the SSA records. So the names in that table were (probably) not used at all in the U.S. between 1880 and 2021. (The SSA apparently doesn't keep records on names that appear less than five times in a given year, so it's possible there were a few of these guys around, but not many.) This is because, as you may expect from medieval records, there were more than twice as many male names in the records as female names, so there were more left over after cutting the ones that appeared in the SSA data. So twenty of the female names on the table were also used in the US since 1880, but not often.
I did not make any effort to sort names by etymology, so the list includes French, Welsh, Scandinavian, &c. names, not just names that have an English origin. Multicultural, for "pretty much just one quadrant of Europe" values of "multicultural". I don't think that should break anyone's immersion or anything; medieval people traveled around more than people tend to think.
Speaking of breaking immersion, I also cut the following names off of the list because I thought they might be distracting to your players if you randomly assigned them to an NPC -- or to your audience if you use this to name characters for a writing project. I'm not going to say there's something wrong with these names, just that they're the sort of thing you would want to only deploy on purpose:
From the male names:
Cok
Flourecoc
Hammecok
Marmaduke
Odo
Vivian
From the female names:
Cuntessa
Cuntus
Licorice
Also, to note, I've kept them separated into 100 male names and 100 female names because the source data was pretty firmly entrenched in the gender binary. Obviously you can do what you want with your characters' genders, though, and if you want to completely ignore the division, feel free to combine them into a single list and roll a d20+d10 for a d200 table.
Anyway, without further ado, the tables (or, well, lists numbered 1-100) are below the cut.

Jackals
Jackals might be the weirdest normal rpg I've read in a minute. It is d100, osr, fate, indie, traditional, historical, and ahistorical. It is a feature length system with rules for everything from morale to wilderness exploration, a hefty bestiary, and multiple sample adventures, and it feels like sixteen different colors of playdoh all smooshed together.
I think this is honestly going to be a favorite system for some folks, because despite the clunk of a lot of what it's doing, the whole is cohesive. The game works.
The basic pitch for Jackals is that it takes place in a sort of Stargate Sumerian mythic past on another world where an empire of animal-headed people has recently stopped oppressing humanity due to its catastrophic collapse. The PCs are spear-and-sandals militarized vagabonds who wander through ancient ruins and fight against the remnants of the empire.
There's a fair bit of worldbuilding and culture, and the book dances back and forth across the line between stereotype and fresh. Ultimately what it evokes is a sort of hollywood style world, where it feels a little staged but a lot of effort went into that staging.
And speaking of effort, the layout of Jackals is excellent and the artwork is full color, highly detailed, and very evocative of the setting. You can get a perfect snapshot of what Jackals' world is like by glancing at a single piece. John McCambridge knocked it out of the park with his illustrations.
Probably the closest comparisons to what Jackals is are The Bloody Handed Name Of Bronze (which is much more loose and story-tell-y) and Agon (which is much more narratively structured.) Both are solid systems, and definitely worth a look, but for now I'm going to stay on topic.
Jackals plays like the sort of rpg that you think of when you think rpg. You pick your culture, you assign stats, you roll d100 for checks, you fight hyenamen and steal their gold and use it to barter for a better helmet. However, in alongside all the special ability picking and magic learning and skill percent assigning there's fate points, a meta-currency called Clash that you can spend during combat to take more actions during your turn, a HP system that differentiates between sweat and meat, and a lot of clever little flourishes.
What I'm saying is there's plenty of familiar landmarks. You can power attack and dual wield and whatnot. But Jackals might have the most aftermarket additions I've ever seen bolted onto a d100 system, and it's surprisingly stable as a result.
When I started my read I wasn't sure what to expect from Jackals, but the more I mull over it the more I like it. D100 engines are squirrely, but Jackals caught that squirrel and cooked it into a delicious stew.

(This is the second in a series of short design diaries. You can find the first here.)
SpeedRune is an RPG about living in a fantastical ancient world. It’s inspired by The Epic of Gilgamesh, Beowulf, The Iliad, and other stories that mix half-remembered history with magical myth, and by video games like King of Dragon Pass and Morrowind. There’s seasonal play, with a single adventure and community-building downtime across each of six seasons.
The introductory is made up of seven four-page booklets: one for players, one for GMs, and one for each season.
PLAYERS: Everything a player needs fits comfortably on a double-sided piece of paper: their character sheet, the magical runes they draw power from, the rules of play, and player and world principles. Roll some dice for your skills (Weapon, Worship, Orate, Career, and six more), choose two runes that represent the god you most admire, write down a passion that defines your actions, and you’re ready to go.
The runes represent powerful blessings that can add to your abilities when you act in their accord or let you perform powerful miracles, such as ripping open the earth, creating an immaculate illusion, calling down lightning, or speaking to the dead. Everyone has access to at least two of them, and you don’t start with lowly cantrips; players are immediately able to change the course of an adventure and their community.
GMs: The GM (also a player, but you get what I mean) gets another sheet of paper, which includes additional mechanics for making NPCs, advice on arbitrating the rules, and a sheet to track the players’ community, which can impact sessions in big ways. They also get concise seasonal booklets, which provide structure and options for the sometimes difficult act of game planning.
SEASONS: Seasons present a clear way to structure sessions into short campaigns, which can be linked to other campaigns across years and decades. A season is made up of an adventure (such as exploring a cave, repulsing raiders, or coming to terms with an angry spirit) that players go on together, followed by a downtime action in the community (holding a festival, courting a lover, spying on nearby clans) that spotlight individual characters, influence the community, and provide resources for future adventures.
Each season’s booklet has multiple adventure options (with threats, NPCs, and GM advice) and downtime examples. Threats grow naturally across seasons; seeds planted in the spring bloom and fruit and must be harvested. GMs can mix and match threats or follow a single growing problem across a year depending on player actions.
Each couplet of adventure and downtime can be finished in a single two or three hour session, which means you can finish a whole campaign in six sessions! Character advancement includes options for bringing in new characters, so a series of campaigns cross years and decades, with characters coming of age and dying as the community grows and changes.
AND MORE. SpeedRune is being actively developed, with more art being added to the book and a series of more detailed campaigns in development, with the first arriving in January. Steal power from the heart of a dead god! Form a confederacy of disparate and weird tribes to resist an empire! Learn the secrets of a rock-worshipping cult!

Can I just say,
I’m absolutely in love with the idea of Travis rolling a D100 everyday to check to see whether or not Chetney dies in the middle of the night.
It’s so creative and so fucking funny.
And the fact it can just happen at any time, makes it all the better.
Go Travis.

World of Frozen: Disney Parks
Part 2
Part 1 gives the first look at the World of Frozen in Hong Kong's Disney Park here.
We now have another snippet of the World of Frozen, given to us just a couple of days ago, giving us just a little bit more insight into what it was like between the events of Frozen fever (which is canonically set after Frozen Olaf's Frozen Adventure) and Frozen 2.
There's not as much here like the previous video. But I think I'd be worth sharing it some anyways.
We get a look at some new portraits alongside some familiar ones. In Frozen 2 we saw a painting of Angarr, which is in the top left corner in this image below. Next to it is an official portrait of Sven and Kristoff. They look so good in it and totally deserve their own painting. Bottom left, we have another familiar portrait shown in Olaf's Frozen Adventure of Agnarr, Iduna and young Elsa and Anna. This painting is also a concept art and hence there are two versions of it. In the concept version of it, the original one, Iduna had blonde hair and in the one used for the Short, Iduna has brown hair. The right to that portrait, in this frame is of Olaf. This pose of Olaf is one of his poses used as promotion for the first movie. In the painting he's sitting on a chair instead of ice like the promotional images show. I guess we can imply that all the promotional images of Frozen are actually official royal portraits, though they may not all be shown in the films, shorts and parks. The last portrait at the far bottom right corner, is of Elsa and Anna. A new one first featured in the first video for the first look at the World of Frozen in the Disney Park in Hong Kong. See the first part for a better look at it (link above).
Tumblr media
We get a glimpse of the kanu boat at the Arendelle dock as a nod to Anna and Hans first meet and another nod to Anna s fishing rod gift for her 19th birthday in Frozen Fever.
Tumblr media
Next we get another look from the newsletter featured in the first look for the park. If you can't read or for any reason, I've written it out all in the first part.
Tumblr media
We also get another look at the scroll for the official proclamation for the official Summer Snow Day from the first look video. For a reminder, Summer Snow Day is a new official celebration in Arendelle to make one year from the great thaw or as they remember it, one year from Anna's great sacrifice that saved Elsa from Hans and the kingdom from the eternal winter (yes, Elsa was the one who thawed the kingdom but she learnt the key was love because of Anna's sacrifice. So really it was Anna who saved the kingdom).
Tumblr media
The next look we have is of Sven and Kristoff in a different kind of portrait, individually, again using the promotional character images used for Frozen. Kristoff's pose is the same as his iconic one for Frozen but he's in this Frozen epilogue and Frozen Fever attire, as this was his everyday look back then.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At the end of Frozen, we learn that Elsa, Queens the time, officially names Kristoff as the Official Ice Master of Arendelle. Here's that title hung up.
Tumblr media
And finally we have Oaken in his sauna but through a screen. He makes a snowflake as a reference to Elsa then wipes it off.
Tumblr media
And there we have the second look at the World of Frozen resort in the Hong Kong Disney Park. I know we're in events post Frozen 2 but it's nice to know what happened within the 2 years after Frozen Fever and before Frozen 2. The update on Hans and relationship with the Southern Isles has me going crazy with the possibility of his return in Frozen 3. We'll have to see. But hope you enjoyed this post 😁
