Police have broken up a pro-Palestinian encampment at Wayne State University in Detroit and arrested at least 12 people after organizers turned down offers to meet with school officials and refused to leave. Video shows Wayne State and Detroit police in riot gear tearing down fencing and breaking down tents erected on May 23 on green space near the undergraduate library. The protesters chanted: “There’s no riot here. Why are you in riot gear?” University President Kimberly Andrews Espy cited health and safety concerns and disruptions to campus operations for the police deployment. The camp, she said, “created an environment of exclusion – one in which some members of our campus community felt unwelcome and unable to fully participate in campus life”. Protest camps sprang up across the US and in Europe as students demanded their universities stop doing business with Israel or companies they say support its war on Gaza. Organisers seek to amplify calls to end the war, which they describe as a genocide against the Palestinians.
-- "Riot police dismantle pro-Palestinian camp at university in Detroit" by Stephen Quillen and Nils Adler for Al Jazeera, 30 May 2024 16:50 GMT

"Some of us asked for advice on how young people today can face some issues that are difficult, that are very talked about -- we talked about euthanasia, abortion," Clara Yacolca Farfan, 24 from Peru told CNS. In response, she said, the pope told them to "defend life." "We know that there are people that go through very strong situations, but the pope invited us care for life, because it is sacred and to do it from wherever we are," she said. "We don't have to do big things; simply, if you work in politics, defend life in politics, in whatever job you have defend life in whatever your position is."

"Air Pistols To Be Banned," Border Cities Star. April 17, 1933. Page 3. ---- WILL BE SEIZED ---- Windsor Police Decide Toy Guns Are Deadly ---- Magistrate Brodie gingerly fingered a deadly-looking air pistol in Windsor court this morning and decided it was time to call a halt. The one-time owner of the "gat" explaining he bought the weapon for 75 cents in Detroit, was transferred to Juvenile court when it developed he is only 15 years old.
But before turning the case over to minor court officials, Magistrate Brodie requested police to have customs officers put a ban on such weapons coming from Detroit.
"We have had several complaints," Chief Wigle declared. "These guns are just as dangerous within the city limits as any others. Several windows have been broken and if one of the pellets were to strike a person in the eye it would cause blindness."
Constable Langrill, who made the seizure, stated that in experimenting with the pistol he shot a pellet through two heavy thickness of cardboard.
"We're going to seize every such gun we find." Chief Wigle pronounced. "and we are going to arrest anyone found with one in his possession."

Sauce Gardner, a prominent name in the world of American football who once played for Detroit PAL Youth Football and later became a Pro Bowl New York Jet cornerback, surprised his hometown with an unexpected act of kindness during the NFL Draft.
The lucky metro Detroit school-aged youth received brand-new Microsoft Surface laptops. Each youth also received one-on-one time with him and an individual picture. Before arriving to surprise the youth, Gardner made the day even more memorable by signing t-shirts and footballs for the children to take home.
“Being able to see these kids’ faces light up while walking in is just a blessing because I know a lot of these kids look up to me. It’s a blessing to be an example on and off the field. Every day, I wake up with a purpose,” Gardner said.
One of the cornerstones of Gardner’s philanthropic endeavors is his dedication to mentoring and empowering young people. Recognizing the pivotal role of positive role models in his life, he’s made it his mission to pay it forward. Whether it’s through hosting football camps, speaking engagements at schools, or returning to Detroit PAL, where it all started for him, Gardner is actively involved in shaping the next generation.
“I’m excited about what the future holds. I’m sure I will have another camp coming up this year, and I’m sure it will be here (Detroit PAL), and I’m looking forward to it. I look forward to seeing these kids here, whether they are coming to participate in the training camp or coming to see me. They will be well taken care of,” Gardner said.
Gardner, a native of Detroit and Martin Luther King High School alum established the Sauce Gardner Family Foundation Football Camp to empower underprivileged teens. The camp was designed to hone football skills while instilling values such as leadership, hard work, and the significance of education.
Detroit PAL CEO Fredrick D. Hunter introduced Sauce Gardner and expressed his enthusiasm and pride. Hunter’s remarks were filled with excitement. While reflecting on the significance of this surprise occasion, he thanked Microsoft, Wasserman Sports Agency, and the NFL Player Association.
“How amazing to have one of our very own who grew up in the PAL league playing football and continued to work on his game to elevate to be one of the, if not the best, cornerbacks in the NFL. We are proud to call him one of our own,” Hunter said.

Envision vibrant urban classrooms, alive with the natural rhythm of nature, allowing students to emerge as custodians of Michigan’s aquatic treasures. Picture the educational landscape transformed beyond traditional confines, dismantling barriers between the urban sprawl and the unconcealed wonders of the wild. In an extraordinary collaboration involving the Michigan Wildlife Council, Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and Real Times Media, a Detroit-based English Language Arts teacher is helping reshape the educational narrative. This groundbreaking initiative unfolds as a vibrant ecosystem, where students actively participate in raising salmon from eggs to release, presenting a hands-on approach that transcends textbooks and lectures.
Monica DeGarmo, an English Language Arts Teacher at the Academy of the Americas High School, is pioneering this unique wildlife education initiative.  DeGarmo ‘s journey into wildlife education began unexpectedly during a field trip to the Belle Isle Water Festival in Fall 2022. The catalyst? A student-led impromptu search for crawdads during a canoeing adventure on Lake Okonoka. DeGarmo shares her experience, stating, ” For context, this is a student who was often unmotivated in class and out of nowhere, being in nature shined a whole new light on who he is as a person and the wealth of knowledge and skills that he had to share. He was in his element. I think one of the most exciting things about being a teacher is building relationships with your students and finding creative ways to make what we’re learning interesting and relevant to them.”

Thank you, Crain’s Detroit! You are well-represented in our dining room!
A dear friend gave me great advice yesterday. We don’t have to give our trophies back. What she meant by that was that we don’t have to feel some need to repay recognition by pursuing the next great thing. She also suggested we don’t have to carry our trophies around with us everywhere we go (literally or figuratively) as that can burden us and prevent us from seeing/grabbing the next opportunity…

“Three Small Boys - Just Fishin' and Thinkin',” Border Cities Star. June 4, 1932. Page 5. --- FISHING gives a fellow such a lot of time for thinking - and the thoughts of youth are such long, long thoughts. Holland Ross, the boy with the curly hair at the left in the picture above, is steeped in contempletion as he gates at some caught fish. Jan Ross, the dark-haired boy in the centre, looks wistfully out over the river, with his fishing rod lying limp before him. Bruce Boss, the boy with the freckles, at the right, has thrown a coding are about the shoulders of his dark-haired brother. The three boss live at 115 Campbell avenue. The picture was taken on the banks of the Detroit River- a Mecca for small boys these days.
