The Contract

"You... you want me to what?" I ask lowly, looking up at the group across from me from under my lashes.

It really wasn't fair that they all get to have each other, and I'm on the other side of the table, on my own.

I should have had my father's public relations specialist come with me.

"We would like you to, as a part of your job here with Scuderia Ferrari, pretend to date Mr.Leclerc for a six month period, with a one month soft launch period and a five month relationship, which would then end on 'mutual terms'. During the time, you will be compensated while completing your classes, with the promise of a position on our engineering team," Frederic Vasseur is the one to explain, his position as team principle known to the entire room, including his driver, who sits to his left, reading over the paper that outlines this whole mess.

"I- I don't understand why- how this would be beneficial to you all? I'm just a university student."

He laughs. Frederic Vasseur laughs at me. "Ms.Earnhardt, you're not just anything. Your father is and your grandfather was motorsport legend. You're a well known name," He explains.

"Exactly, my father and grandfather, no one gives a damn who I am unless I'm with them," I try to explain.

"We don't need you to be the next Kardashian," Vasseur assures, "You would be most to fix Charles' reputation with female fans and overall."

"Have you seen social media?" I can't help but question, turning to Charles for the first time. "You are basically every woman's one true love right now."

"But he still needs a boost in the reputation department," Ferrari's PR strategist reminds. "And being seen as a good man? Good boyfriend? The perfect move. So, what do you say?"

How can Charles be ok with this? He and his most recent woman of the hour just broke up last month, and I also look nothing like the others.

"It's up to Charles," Is the response I give, making Vasseur and Charles look up to me in surprise. "If you want to spend the entire season being fake together, if you think it'll help, then I'm in. Anything for the scuderia."

"That's what we love to hear," Vasseur practically cheers, wrapping an arm around Charles' shoulders. "So, you in Charles?"

And he pauses, looks down at the papers in front of him and back to me, looking me over, and then back to his boss. "Of course."

"Great! We would like this to start immediately, so if you could both fill out these surveys about yoursel-"

"Absolutely not, Pri," I interupt Prianka, the PR woman's eyes growing triple in size. "If we're doing this, we're sitting down for coffee and getting to know each other. No 'favorite color is' and 'favorite animal is'."

"I love the idea!" She nearly hollers. "This morning, directly after this meeting, you two can go out to coffee in the city. Lynleigh, I assume, being from the area, you know a spot?"

"I'm from Nashville. That's in Tennessee, not Florida, Prianka," I find myself having to correct, reminding myself that she's from London and has no reason to know. "But I can text Logan and see? Or go find him in the paddock, I'm sure as a local he has some idea," I offer, her nodding brightly.

"Perfect!"

Interview Before the Race and Free Practices

Croft: Here we have Lando Norris from Mclaren, Charles Leclerc from Ferrari l, Fernando Alonso from Aston Martin, and Lily Earnhardt from Red Bull. Let’s start with the closest to me and make our way down the couch, so that’s you Lando. The question for all four of you is how do you feel about the upcoming race, season, and how does the car feel so far for you?

Lando: I feel pretty confident in the team. Oscar seems to be a good addition in the garage. It is always nice to get a chance to recharge the batteries over winter break, but I really am just happy to be back in the car and on the track.

Charles: The car seems to be well designed, obviously it was designed by Matteo last season and we have Fred in the drivers seat this season. So it is just getting a feel for the new car and change in the garage. It is different but still welcome and happy to see where it goes. I am just really looking forward to the new season and hope to have good pace and get on the podiums.

Fernando: Obviously it is a new car and a new team for me, but I am happy, still hungry for podiums. I am excited to race and get in the car on the track.

Lily: I feel pretty excited and just ready to get in the car and on the track just like everyone else. The car seems to feel nice, obviously it is a different feeling especially with the amount of g-force compared to the Penske car. But training over the winter really was helpful with that, I was constantly on the sims just preparing for the season. Just really overall excited to race against new drivers and on new tracks.

Croft: The next question is for Lando, Charles, and Fernando. How do you feel about having a female on the grid? Does it change anything to you as drivers personally?

Lando: I mean honestly the only change is that it’s a new face in a Red Bull. I honestly don’t mind it. I think it will be an exciting and positive change for the sport and a step towards the future.

Charles: Uhh like Lando said it does not really change anything. We are all competitors regardless of gender. Just a new face to the grid.

Fernando: I was able to watch Lily race the past few years as a fan of the Indy Car series. She is good and is capable behind the wheel. I just am excited to see how she does on the track coming from Indy Car.

Croft: Lily what was your mindset coming into formula 1 and this weekend?

Lily: To be honest I was nervous at first. Many see Motorsport, more specifically Formula 1 as a man’s sport. So I was very much nervous about possible hate or non-acceptance from the fans, but also the other teams on the grid. Before I left the states it was easy to just live in the bubble of excitement. Really it wasn’t until the day I left to get on the plane did it really hit nerves wise. My dad was the one really to help me break out of that mindset. Growing up and then getting into Indy Car he has always been there. To be the shoulder to lean on when people would cry nepotism because my dad is Dale Earnhardt Jr and racing is the family business. He just told me what he always has and that was to just get in the car and have fun. If you are having fun you are to busy to think of the rest and can ignore any hate or criticism. Then coming to the track this weekend it was really nice to see some fans with my old Penske kits from Indy and decked out in the friendship bracelets. As well as the fans wearing the new Red Bull kits with my name and number on them. So I am grateful to the fans old and new for being so supportive.

Someone once pointed out that Chick is meant to parallel Dale Earnhardt, with the way he drives and all. I made a whole post on why I think they'd be friends, but that's not what this is about.

Dale Earnhardt Sr. was a farmer?? (See attached Short)

So like... obviously now I'm thinking "what if Chick was a farmer"

I could totally imagine Chick having the stuff to be a farm boy. He was a sweet kid, probably loved the animals growing up, but he also gives those hard-edged vibes a lot of farmers have. He's a hard worker for sure, and I could totally see him having pretty 'cold' seeming views about the origins of meat. He knows where it comes from and he could probably tell you exactly how much it cost and how long it took the farmer to get that steak to your plate, and it's not going to stop him enjoying it.

His dad was obviously into racing, so the man's probably got a rough dirt track on his property somewhere, and that's probably where he started training Chick to drive fast when he was just a little kid.

Imagine Lightning getting cocky bc he thinks he could drive circles around Chick in the dirt after his little trip to Radiator Springs only for Chick to leave HIM in the dust because he's been driving on dirt since he was tall enough to see over the steering wheel.

And he just looks at Lightning after their lil race like "Stick to asphalt, kid" like he didn't just pull off Doc's trick without ever meeting the man (because Doc didn't invent drifting)

And better yet, after every race, Chick flies home and the next day he's chasing chickens and feeding cows like??? Bro <3

Though I'm sure all that stops when his dad finally retires and he's finally free to get his own place and spend some of his multiple millions of dollars on a big, fancy house somewhere.

Yes I appreciate that there's probably a lot of comic/game/otherwise non-movie media that disproves all of this but shhh... let me have my funky new headcanons.

Dale Earnhardt Tribute Scheme. I originally created this on a 2018 Camaro which now resides with Dale Earnhardt, Jr. in his private collection. Then, redesigned it to fit this 2003-2005 Action Monte Carlo.

This is a full body wrap with Hayes waterslide decal paper. The original template I created on the body, flattened and scanned it, then created the template in Photoshop. Designed the car from scratch in Photoshop on that template. Decals then printed on white Hayes waterslide paper on a Canon G4210 printer. Headlights printed separately using clear paper with a white backer. This particular body is 7 separate panels.

@Earnhardt_Lily I apologize in advance for the sappy sob fest of a post but here we go… To my best friend, my other half, to the girl who I met on the pit lane saying her dad was a much cooler and faster driver than mine. We have been through everything together.. breakups, getting into Indy Car, causing mayhem on various nascar tracks over the years. There is nobody else I would scream the bridge to cruel summer with at 2 am other than you and Lucy. Letting you go to follow your dreams to Formula 1 is terribly hard. But I just know that you are going to do great things and break so many barriers for all the little girls who dreamed of racing in the f1 series. I am going to miss you so much on the track with me, but at least you moving to Red Bull gives me the excuse to sneak into their garage 🤪

After two weeks of “soft launching” on social media Alice decided that it was finally time to officially announce that I was the second Red Bull driver joining Max on the f1 grid. Rather than spending the day waiting to hear and see the reactions of the announcement I decided to go exploring and shop for stuff to decorate the townhouse that Red Bull was kind of enough to set me up with so I was not living out of a hotel room. Addie was set to come into town sometime this week to help me really get settled in and do our pre-season tradition of go karting and to record the latest episode of the podcast. Years ago Addie, Lucy and I created a podcast together called Don’t Tell the Grid. For awhile it was really a secret from the grid and nobody on the Indy Car grid knew about it. About a year ago all that changed when Pato ‘OWard walked into the office space we were using to record the podcast, and Pato being Pato couldn’t help but spread the word to the rest of the grid and by the end of the Indy 500 race weekend the entire grid knew about it. Since then he has been begging to be on the podcast . With the podcast literally being called Don’t tell the Grid obviously that is going to be a hard no. Tucking my phone into my bag and grabbing the keys to the Porsche that was another thing Red Bull had kindly taken liberty to give me as I had to give up my own back in the states. First stop coffee.
