I’m obsessed with shows that are procedural police dramas with a subplot that revolves around the will they-won’t they romance between a pretty, strait-laced blonde detective and a police consultant with strange connections and claim to have supernatural gifts that they use to solve crimes, who is quippy and irreverent. The pretty detective is virtuous to a fault with a coworker with shockingly blue eyes who hates the police consultant with a burning passion, mostly because of the frequent supernatural claims and aforementioned irreverent quips, but their shared affection and respect for the blonde detective is the only thing they have in common. Am I talking about Lucifer or Psych?

Headcanons:

Lucifer getting with Dan was the most unforeseen outcome. The precinct all but froze in time when Lucifer smacked Dan's ass affectionately before giving him a smooch and walking off and Dan didn't seem to even mind.

It's a recurring joke between Dan and Lucifer that since they couldn't get with Chloe, they just settled for each other.

(post season 2) One day when Lucifer was in one of his moods, he asked why Dan's relationship with Chloe didn't work out when they were trying to fix things. Dan explained how Malcolm had broken it beyond repair.

We all know how Lucifer is when he's filled with righteous anger. That man flew straight to hell to personally torture Malcolm for the shit he did to Dan. Not only did he kidnap Dan, hurt him, try to frame him for Lucifer's murder but he also completely ruined the relationship Dan tried so hard to repair. And as insecure as Lucifer is about being someone's romantic partner, he probably believed Malcolm ruined Dan's one chance to be with someone he deserved.

Lucifer tries to work the waffle cufflinks Dan bought him into every outfit.

Dan gets to go on joyrides with Lucifer's cars, all he needs to do is give Luci his puppy Dan eyes and he's free to choose any vehicle from Lux's impressive garage.

You know, I can kinda understand why Linda, Chloe, Dan, etc. took some time to readjust upon realizing that Lucifer was, you know, The Actual Devil, but I also find it rather hilarious that they got so freaked out, especially the latter two to the point that they tried to kill him… I mean, they’re talking about a man whose version of deviancy is stealing a man’s pudding from the fridge or making a particularly bad pun.  Who gets shot and immediately is more annoyed about how damaged his suit got than about the murder attempt.  Whose response to getting shot and finding out he’s invulnerable once more is to pick up the gun and shoot himself again, just to make sure.  Who decides that the only way to get back at his friend for trying to kill him is a massive prank that does literally nothing harmful.

I mean, like I said, I kinda get it, but also… this man is not the root of all evil.

in a better world, or perhaps just a well-written fanfic, Dan doesn’t die and Lucifer doesn’t go back to hell. Chloe and Lucifer get together and they get married and he becomes stepfather to Trixie. Lucifer purchases a shirt that says “I’m not the step-dad, I’m just the sad that stepped up.” He exclusively wears it around Dan, to Dan’s eternal chagrin.
