Gorillaz return with 40-minute synth-funk and pop odyssey, ‘The Now Now’
Daniel Lester
June 30, 2018
After a year of relentless touring, everybody's favorite animated bunch has unleashed a brand new studio effort in the form of "The Now Now",a 40-minute synth-funk and pop odyssey that serves as a follow-up to 2017's comeback album "Humanz". A lot has changed in the timespan between the two albums, mainly the shift in the band's leadership as Murdoc Niccals, the infamous bass player and mastermind of Gorillaz got arrested at the start of 2018. Taking over is the band's blue-haired frontman 2D who saw fit to try a different approach with this new album, marking a complete shift from the guest-heavy, and futuristic "Humanz". Of course, in true Gorillaz fashion, this new phase for the band comes with a few surprises of its own, namely the new bassist of the group Ace. Infamous for being the leader of the notorious Gangreen Gang, criminals who were on numerous occasions apprehended by the ever-so-loveable Powerpuff Girls. Ace seems to have settled down and is the replacement for Murdoc, and his presence can definitely be felt in this new record.
"The Now Now" is the polar opposite of Gorillaz' previous effort in nearly every way. Firstly, there are only 3 guest appearances on this album. The first single "Humility", a summer bop tune full of warm synthesizers and lyrics talking about isolation, features warm guitar licks by none other than the jazz legend George Benson. This unlikely collaboration results in a song that may surprise many Gorillaz fans, who expect the band's "dark pop" sound found on the majority of their releases. The second, and final song, to feature any guests is "Hollywood", that contains spoken lines by Chicago house veteran Jamie Principle, and of course, Snoop Dogg. The song itself features quite heavy and bassy instrumentation that perfectly contrasts 2D's moody voice when delivering the refrain about Hollywood and jealousy. The instrumentation becomes even wackier and ear-grabbing beneath Snoop Dogg's lines as he raps, contrary to 2D's criticism of jealousy "I put the cake on the plate/Jealousy and me?/Oh, we're making a date". The only weak point for the song is Jamie Principle, with his corny lines about Hollywood being his mistress, sounding like an out-of-place 80's hype-man, who turned up for the wrong performance.
If there is one word that one could think of when listening to this album it would be "warm". This is mostly due to the highly synthetic and bassy production, courtesy of Simian Mobile Disco's James Ford, the producer behind the latest album of another beloved British primate collective, the Arctic Monkeys. 2D's melancholic croons over the songs "Sorcererz" and "Fire Flies" give the impression that they could have been part of a dystopian Stevie Wonder compilation. Gorillaz are a band that is known for their enticing instrumentals that pull inspiration from many styles, but one key part of their recipe is the simplistic, yet highly memorable basslines. All the bass-playing on this album is reinforced by a filtered, 70s synth bass sound that further contributes to the "warmness" of "The Now Now". However, they are not as memorable as on previous releases, which brings us to the biggest drawback of this record; the lack of memorable tunes. "Tranz" sounds like songs that one would find in a 2000s rock playlist, hinting at Mando Diao and The Killers, rather than Gorillaz. While one of the more memorable songs it certainly doesn't feel like a Gorillaz song. Other songs on this album also feel like they would have fit better on certain Damon Albarn's projects, the long-time collaborator and mentor of the band. "Magic City" sounds like a long-lost Blur B-side, while "One Percent" could have fit snuggly onto Damon's 2014 solo effort "Everyday Robots". If there is one song that one could say ruins the entire experience and flow of the album, it would have to be the snoozer "Idaho". The song's opening features an acoustic guitar that sounds like it's setting the mood for Amber Coffman and Angel Deradoorian's vocals, rather than the Gorillaz' Damon Albarn-sounding frontman. The chorus also sounds like a throwback to Albarn's solo material. The song "Kansas" is also incredibly moody and forgettable, despite its impressively bouncy instrumentation.
While many tunes may not be "attention-demanding", the instrumental song "Lake Zurich" is certainly a welcome break from the breezy, warm compositions that occupy most of the album's runtime. "Souk Eye", the latin-influenced closer brings something newer to the table and is a solid way to finish off a sleepy, melancholic album like "The Now Now".
This is not the mainstream Gorillaz-fan album and seems like it would please only hardcore fans. While not bad or mediocre necessarily, it does lack the usual punch, innovation, and catchiness of a Gorillaz record, and seems to be more applicable to late night drive-playlist, rather than for a consistent experience for people who enjoy interesting songwriting, unique instrumentation and dystopian-sounding bangers and genre-defying tunes.
Best songs: Humility, Sorcererz, Fire Flies, Lake Zurich

Dan will rebrand as a Lester. Anon has that correct but he's not going to acknowledge anything as a couple. He's just going to change his name on all platforms and then like a month or two later be like oh yeah I changed my name lol.
He posts a video titled “rip Daniel Howell” and everyone’s like “fucking thank god he’s finally deleting his channel thank the lord” and then it’s just a 30 second video of a black screen with white comic sans that says “1991-2020” and then everyone’s like “oh fuck wait did he actually fucking die” and then there’s radio silence for several days while everyone panics and then all of a sudden you log onto twitter one day and you find a tweet from @DanielLester that just says “new name who dis”

Why You Should Listen to: Ekatarina Velika's ‘Ljubav’
Daniel Lester
November 14, 2018
Welcome to the weekly-series “Why You Should Listen to”, where we will discuss great albums worth every music lover’s attention. In today’s society, while we do have all the possible access to everything and anything on the Internet, it can often happen for us to miss some music we would love to hear. That’s why, every Monday, we will try to help you discover some awesome music in this series of articles. The focus will mostly be on studio albums, be it classics or underrated gems and records that have been forgotten by time. Our focus will also stretch out across the world, from the USA and UK to the African continent, Latin America and even the Balkans. Today, we’ll talk about the legendary ex-Yugoslav band Ekatarina Velika (Ecatherine the Great) and their classic album "Ljubav" ("Love"). NOTE: Since this album is not in English, the translations will most likely be literal and possibly inaccurate at certain points.
The 1970s and 1980s new wave movement may have originated in the UK and US, but it quickly spread all over the world and influenced countless bands from many different countries. It also reached the now-defunct country of Yugoslavia (or as it was fully named the Socialistic Federative Republic of Yugoslavia), which was going through many changes at that time, which would ultimately lead to its demise. The ex-Yugoslav pop culture was quite influenced by what was going on in the UK and US at the time. In the 1970s, the predominant genre was hard rock fused with some traditional elements, dubbed "shepherd rock", a sound created and popularized by the, arguably, most popular ex-Yugoslav band Bijelo Dugme (White Button). While it had a gigantic following, the younger generations wanted to rebel against the primitive sound and silly themes of that genre. The emergence of punk and new wave gave many young bands from the former Yugoslav countries a new theme and a new idea of what kind of sound should be popular. With new wave came many great bands such as the iconic band Idoli (Idols) and many pivotal releases, one of them being the highly lauded new wave compilation album "Paket Aranžman" ("Package Deal"), often considered the best former Yugoslav album. On that compilation, one could hear the cult band Šarlo Akrobata (Charlot the Acrobat, which was how Yugoslav people referred to Charlie Chaplin), the band that would lead to the formation of Ekatarina Velika. It was a young new wave band of rebels Dušan Kojić "Koja" (who would later on form his own influential band Disciplina Kičme), Ivan Vdović "Vd" and Milan Mladenović (who would later on become the founding member and frontman of Ekatarina Velika). After their incredible and critically acclaimed debut album, the band fell apart in 1981 and the members went their own separate ways. Milan and Vd would become part of a new band known as Katarina II with Milan's guitarist friend and band co-founder Dragan Mihajlović "Gagi". Between 1981 and 1984, many line-up changes occured and the band's final core line-up consisted of Milan Mladenović (guitar, lead vocals), classically trained pianist Margita Stefanović "Magi" (keyboards, vocals), Bojan Pečar (bass), with the drummers constantly changing. In 1984 they released their debut as Katarina II, an album that did not reach a wide audience. After a name change to Ekatarina Velika (further referred to as "EKV", as fans of the band liked to call them), the band's next two albums would bring them a dedicated fanbase and critical acclaim, but also some rivalries with other post-punk and new wave bands of the time. EKV is often compared to the likes of Joy Division, The Cure and Talking Heads. They reagrded themselves more as a European band, rather than a Serbian band and were influenced by the likes of Elvis Costello, XTC and Joe Jackson.
Tumblr media
from left to right: Bojan, Milan, Magi and drummer at the time Ivan Ranković "Raka"
Since EKV is not a very well-known band around the world, it might be appropriate to introduce the band, in the line-up that recorded their fourth studio album "Ljubav" ("Love"), as we will talk about it in detail.
Milan Mladenović (1958 - 1994) - legendary frontman of the band, who was also the guitarist and main lyricist of the band. He was known for his deep and cryptic lyrics, strong moral values, recognizable and powerful voice that could emit the most blood-curdling and banshee-like shrieks and screams, but also some very smooth and emotive vocals, as well as minimalistic, but integral guitar-playing. While he spent most of his life in Belgrade, he also lived in Zagreb and Sarajevo in his childhood, due to his father's military obligations, which gave Milan a strong connection to his Yugoslav identity. He died of pancreatic cancer in 1994. Margita Stefanović (a.k.a. "Magi") (1959 - 2002) - the second most-known band member, known for her fantastic musicianship and anthemic synth and piano lines. She was loved by fans and bandmates alike, and recognized as a kind and unique spirit. She appears on the front cover of the album. Magi died after being diagnosed as HIV positive, due to intravenuous drug use. Bojan Pečar (1960 - 1998) - was known for his incredible bass guitar skills and iconic basslines. He was a very proficient musician and contributed to the grooves and dynamics of the band's music. He is remembered as the third core member of the band, despite leaving the band in 1989 to move to London, where he also died of a heart attack in 1998. Srđan Todorović (a.k.a. "Žika") (born 1965) - was the band's drummer at the time, and is one of their most well-known members. His primary career is in acting, and is one of the most famous ex-Yugoslav actors, who is still active today. The album "Ljubav" was the band's fourth album. It came after the band's sophomore album "S' Vetrom Uz Lice" ("With the Wind Against My Face") that gave them the necessary and well-deserved mainstream attention in Yugoslavia. While some critics accused them of "selling out", fans approved of their success and continued to support them throughout. The recording of the album started in the summer of 1987, and was completed in one month. It was produced by Australian gutarist Theodore Yanni, and carried the band's signature new-wave and post-punk sound to new heights.
youtube
The opening track, and also one of their most well-known, is "Zemlja" ("Land"). It is a song driven by a flanged guitar playing a very anthemic and repetitive riff, while the bass and drums carry the groove and set the foundation for Milan's voice and lyrics. Magi's keyboard playing is present, but is a bit more subdued on this track. Milan's lyrics seem to symbolize unity, brotherhood and love, making this song one of the more brighter cuts in the band's often dark discography.
Tumblr media
The title track is also a fan-favorite, opening with a punchy and loud drumbeat that welcomes the rest of the energetic instrumentation, in the form of the ever-dynamic bass and quite punkish guitar riffs. Magi's synth lines add a light melody that makes the energetic track more refined and help Milan delve into the topic of love not being as its advertised to us. Lines such as "I boli, i boli, i boli/Boli nas ljubav" (And it hurts, and it hurts, and it hurts/Love hurts us) or "Uz lažni smeh/I naše reči od milja su navika/I naša imena od milja su navika" ("With fake laughs/And our nice words are just a habit/And our sweet nicknames are just a habit"), clearly paint Milan's idea of love as being just a habit, rather than a true and constant feeling, meaning that relationships aren't always pure and genuine as we want them to be. The vocal harmonies in the chorus make this energetic, yet bittersweet track all the more worthy of listening.

Dan knew for a fact that he wanted to marry Phil in 2011.
He couldn’t imagine a life without Phil anymore. They spent all their time together and it was the happiest Dan had ever been, so why shouldn’t he want to marry Phil? They were so perfect for each other it hurt.
And maybe Dan had been a bit of a stereotypical teenage girl with a crush for the entirety of their relationship, writing “Dan Lester” in all kinds of fancy fonts and styles on any scrap of paper he could find, but he’d never confirm that.
Marriage took a few more years than Dan expected, though.
2012 was a rough patch, but they were determined to make it through.
Dan was diagnosed with depression, and Phil was by his side through the whole journey of getting the right meds and doses and finding a therapist.
Then they decided to write a book, and go to Japan for part of their book.
(That was when Phil proposed, and Dan cried like a baby. He’d been waiting a long time, okay, it was justified!)
They agreed to wait for life to settle down to get married, since they were about to launch a tour with a massive stage show.
The tour meant that 2015 and 2016 flew by quicker than they could ever have imagined, and all of a sudden they were planning an even bigger tour for 2018, so wedding plans were left untouched.
But Dan still held onto his dream of marrying Phil. He’d always imagined having a big wedding celebration, but, as they approached their fourth year of engagement, he realized he couldn’t care less about how or where they got married. He just needed to marry Phil.
It was something he felt like an ache in his side, something screaming for him to commit himself to stay by Phil’s side for the rest of their lives no matter what.
So, as soon as Interactive Introverts ended, they eloped. They knew their friends and family would want to celebrate with them, so they planned to have a party at some point, but they wanted to take their time and enjoy their marriage first.
Dan took Phil’s last name, as he’d been itching to do for almost a full decade. And it looked just as good as he had imagined.
The only thing Dan felt he was missing in his life was the ability to be entirely open about his love for Phil. They were perpetually caring less about how they presented themselves online, of course, but there was a difference between constant fond stares and coming out.
The idea of properly coming out to his audience had terrified Dan in the past. He didn’t know how people would react or what effect it would have on his career and private life.
But somehow marrying Phil took away all those fears. Of course, the fear was still present, but Dan knew that Phil would always be at his side to help him through the process.
They came out quietly. No posts or videos calling attention to it, just a simple name change.
Dan’s YouTube channel changed once again from “danielhowell” to “daniellester”, and his other social media followed suit.
It sort of broke the Internet, and people scrambled to write about what the fuck just happened and y’all are acting so surprised but we been knew and Daniel Howell Changes Last Name to His Best Friend’s- Is It a Prank?
Every time Dan saw his new name, a thrill shot up his spine. He got all soft and cuddly and fluffy at the idea that yes, Dan really did belong in the Lester family now. He really did have the paperwork to prove his everlasting love for Phil and Phil’s everlasting love for Dan.
The first time Dan publicly called Phil his husband was in a liveshow.
Phil was rattling pots and pans in the kitchen and the chat filled with questions.
“Hm? Oh, yeah, my husband Phil must be making dinner,” Dan replied casually. Then he realized what he had said, and he froze.
PHAN IS REAL!
Oh my god, look at his face!
He didn’t mean to say that lmao
The chat was going crazy, but Dan wasn’t paying attention. He had a sort of glazed look to his eye, as if he wasn’t really seeing what was in front of him. He just grinned, then giggled.
“That felt really good to say.” Dan giggled again. “Dan Lester, husband of Phil Lester,” he said, testing the words out in his mouth contemplatively. “Has a nice ring to it, wouldn’t you say?”
He focused back on the chat, only to see that younow had crashed.
He laughed loudly, then decided to shut down his laptop and find Phil.
Phil was still making dinner, so Dan softly hugged him from behind, chin resting on Phil’s shoulder.
Phil jumped slightly in surprise, then turned his head to look at Dan.
“Didn’t you only just start your liveshow?” he asked, confused.
Dan nodded into Phil’s shoulder. “Yeah, it only lasted about ten minutes before I called you my husband by accident and they all freaked out and crashed younow.”
Phil laughed, shaking his head. “Of course they did.”
“I don’t get why they’re so surprised, though. It’s been over a month since I changed my name, so they really should’ve been expecting it,” Dan mumbled.
Phil hummed in response, turning back to his cooking.
They stood in silence for a few minutes as Phil continued to cook, until Dan spoke up again.
“But at the same time, I don’t really blame them. Their reaction is exactly what goes through my mind when I hear or see my name, or feel the ring on my finger.”
Phil turned his head again and softly kissed Dan on the lips.
“I love you, Phil Lester,” Dan said against Phil’s lips.
“I love you, too, Dan Lester.”
Dan smiled, teeth biting his lower lip in an attempt to contain his grin. He leaned forward and kissed Phil again, feeling happier than he could ever have thought possible.
