“They’re going to be hellions when they hit secondary school.” “They’re hellions now!” Akasha laughed. “Mum!” Ezra shouted from the living room. Akasha was about to call back when Ezra, Millie, and Lacey Faun all marched into the kitchen with their handmade signs, covered in paint and glue and glitter. This time, they read 7:00 bedtime? No way! Give us 9:00! and Mums and Dads get to go to bed late, why can’t we? Akasha bit her lip to keep from laughing. She didn’t want to encourage disobedience, but at the same time, she didn’t want to discourage them from conversation and letting their needs be known. Even if the earlier bedtime was better for them right now. Josselin put his sponge down on the counter and turned to the kids, stepping up beside Akasha. “Millie,” he signed. “You know we gave you a 7:00 bedtime for a reason. You get to stay up until 8:00 when you don’t have school the next day, right?” Millie wilted a little behind her sign. That was true. “It should be 9:00!” Ezra cried, stepping closer to Millie to offer support. “9:00, like the Mums and Dads!” Mille’s back straightened a little and she nodded. “9:00! 9:00!” Lacey Faun began to chant. Immediately Ezra joined in, and Millie stomped her feet in time. “Okay, that’s enough,” Akasha said. She took a step closer but didn’t try to take their signs. “If you go to bed at 9:00 you’ll be too tired for school in the morning, and you have to go to school.” “Why!?” Lacey Faun demanded. “Because kids need to learn new things every day, so they can be smart and open minded and ready for the world,” Akasha said. Ezra paused. That sounded right, but they didn’t think school really made anyone smart. It was just memorizing stuff for tests, and they said so. Akasha smiled fondly. “I know, love,” she said. “And we’re trying to get you into better classes. But in the meantime, you have to be patient.” “I don’t wanna!” Ezra wailed.

Concierto de Aranjuez: Adagio – Miles Davis

Kind of Blue had been released for just three months when Davis’ continual creative restlessness had him in the recording studio again on a completely different kind of project – Sketches of Spain. His wife Frances had insisted he accompany her to a performance by flamenco dancer Roberto Iglesias. Inspired by the performance, Davis bought every flamenco album he could get at Colony Records shop in New York City.

His collaborator for the album was Gil Evans, the composer and arranger who had hosted the experimental gatherings that led to the Birth of the Cool sessions. Evans transcribed the Adagio from Concierto de Aranjuez,a concerto for guitar by the contemporary Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo. 

The Evans/Davis arrangement begins with a faithful introduction of the concerto's guitar melody on flugelhorn, and soon turns into  a “quasi-symphonic, quasi-jazz world of sound" as described by Evan’s biographer, Stephanie Stein.

Davis thought the concerto's adagio melody was "so strong" that "the softer you play it, the stronger it gets, and the stronger you play it, the weaker it gets".

The work’s original composer Rodrigo was reportedly not impressed, but royalties from the arrangement brought him a lot of money. As he so often did, Davis provoked split reactions from jazz fans and music critics, by pushing on defined boundaries and genres.  Prominent jazz critics declared it a failure, given the scarcity of anything resembling a jazz rhythm in most of the piece, but Bill Mathieu of Downbeat hailed Sketches of Spain as one of the 20th century's most important musical works; "if there is to be a new jazz, a shape of things to come, then this is the beginning”. 

Replying to suggestions that Sketches of Spain was something other than jazz, Davis said "it's music, and I like it".

At over 16 minutes, Concierto de Aranjuez takes up almost half the album, and is performed by a 26 piece orchestra.

Public Enemies is a American biographical crime drama film directed by Michael Mann who co-wrote the screenplay with Ronan Bennett and Ann Biderman. It is an adaptation of Bryan Burrough’s non-fiction book Public Enemies: America’s Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933–34.

Set during the Great Depression, the film chronicles the final years of the notorious bank robber John Dillinger as he is pursued by FBI agent Melvin Purvis, Dillinger’s relationship with Billie Frechette, as well as Purvis’ pursuit of Dillinger’s associates and fellow criminals Homer Van Meter and Baby Face Nelson.

In 1933, John Dillinger infiltrates Indiana State Penitentiary and assists in the jailbreak of his crew. During the firefight, his mentor Walter is shot and killed by the prison guards. Dillinger and company head for a nearby farm, where they change clothes and eat before driving to a safe house on the east-side of Chicago.

After killing Charles Floyd, FBI agent Melvin Purvis is promoted by J. Edgar Hoover to lead the hunt for Dillinger. Purvis shares Hoover’s belief in using modern methods to battle crime, ranging from cataloging fingerprints to tapping telephone lines.

In between a series of bank robberies, Dillinger meets Billie Frechette at a restaurant and impresses her by buying her a fur coat. Frechette falls for Dillinger even after he reveals his identity, and the two become inseparable.

Perché esistono i Big Brother Awards?

Agenzie governative e aziende private stanno violando in modo crescente la privacy delle persone, ovunque. Enormi quantità di dati personali vengono raccolti, archiviati ed elaborati – spesso illegalmente – per perseguire un marketing più efficiente, un maggiore controllo sociale e meccanismi più potenti per il monitoraggio dei cittadini. Combattere il crimine commettendone uno sembra essere la soluzione ideale per le forze dell’ordine nella società dell’informazione del 21 ° secolo.

Ma chi controlla i controllori?

Cosa sono i Big Brother Awards?

Sono premi in negativo che da quasi venti anni vengono assegnati in tutto il mondo a chi più ha danneggiato la privacy ed i diritti civili digitali. La maggioranza dei cittadini digitali sembra ormai convinta che parlare di libertà e diritti civili in Rete sia un esercizio retorico e ripetitivo e che il tecnocontrollo sociale sia ormai la realtà da accettare ed alla quale è inutile opporsi. I BBA si propongono di riportare l’attenzione dei cittadini digitali su coloro che, attivamente o passivamente, contribuiscono a questa situazione. Nonostante questa atmosfera cupa, i BBA sono una iniziativa seria ma realizzata con allegria; tutti i BBA sono infatti permeati anche dalla voglia di divertirsi, non certo per sdrammatizzare la situazione, ma perché fare le cose con allegria aiuta a farle bene. E’ quindi possibile che anche quest’anno, come accaduto in passato, qualche ospite nuovo ed imprevisto partecipi alla cerimonia di assegnazione ……

Come funziona

Quest’anno il tradizionale meccanismo di assegnazione del premio è stato modificato; i premi sono stati assegnati da una giuria di esperti, che hanno sostituito l’abituale processo di raccolta di nomination e votazione della giuria. I premi che saranno assegnati sono: Rischio Tecnologico: assegnato alla nuova tecnologia più rischiosa per i cittadini digitali. Minaccia Nazionale: assegnato per la più grave decisione pubblica o manipolazione dell’informazione fatta da un ente pubblico o da un suo rappresentante. Minaccia Internazionale: assegnato, senza riguardo alla nazionalità, a chi più gravemente minaccia i diritti dei cittadini digitali. Minaccia da una vita: assegnato a chi ha meritato per più anni consecutivi uno dei premi precedenti. Paladino della Privacy: assegnato all’ente o alla persona che ha difeso i diritti dei cittadini digitali con un’iniziativa importante ed originale.

I vincitori dei Big Brother Awards Italia 2018

Rischio Tecnologico: assegnato alla nuova tecnologia più rischiosa per i cittadini digitali: Il premio 2018 viene assegnato congiuntamente a:

● Amazon AWS IoT Services ● Google Cloud IoT ● Particle Industries, Inc.

Queste tre aziende sono attualmente i leader tecnologici e di mercato per la fornitura di servizi cloud per l’IoT. Si tratta di servizi di sviluppo e gestione offerti a coloro che intendono realizzare oggetti IoT, atti a velocizzare il processo di sviluppo di un prodotto, ma contemporaneamente veicolano tutti gli enormi flussi di dati che gli oggetti IoT generano attraverso la piattaforma del fornitore di servizi. Ciò permette di analizzare con tecniche di Big Data Analysis e Deep Learning i flussi di dati e di creare profili normali/psicografici dei possessori di uno o più oggetti IoT. Mentre questo potere può essere in parte ceduto, vendendolo a chi ha realizzato gli oggetti, il l’enorme potere di analizzare l’interezza dei dati di tutti gli oggetti IoT in qualunque modo possibile viene detenuto dal fornitore di servizi. L’analisi di questi flussi di dati conferisce un potere di profilazione e tecnocontrollo maggiore di quello oggetto dell’affaire Facebook/Cambridge Analitica. Un potere enorme, che può essere limitato, anzi autolimitato, solo dalle condizioni di servizio decise unilateralmente dai fornitori di servizi stessi; tuttavia, tutti questi fornitori non pubblicizzano molti particolari su questo aspetto. Considerando che qualsiasi limitazione che il fornitore si imponesse autonomamente comporterebbe la perdita di un affare estremamente redditizio, ci si può domandare se delle autolimitazioni verranno poste in essere in futuro. Per questi motivi i vincitori, quali rappresentanti più significativi di tutta l’industria dell’IoT, vincono meritatamente il Big Brother Award di Rischio Tecnologico.

Minaccia Nazionale: assegnato per la più grave decisione pubblica o manipolazione dell’informazione fatta da un ente pubblico o da un suo rappresentante

La quantità di dati generati da ogni persona nella società dell’informazione è enorme e la conservazione dei dati per finalità di giustizia richiede un delicatissimo bilanciamo fra “sicurezza e privacy”. Questo bilanciamento è saltato completamente quando in Italia è stata approvata una normativa che estende in modo indiscriminato la conservazione di dati di traffico telematico e telefonico alla durata di 6 anni. Legge incompatibile con l’ordinamento comunitario, che porterà a certe procedure da parte della UE (Rif. Sentenza Tele2). Legge duramente criticata dal Garante della Privacy Italiano, da tutti gli attori della società civili nonché da autorevolissimi giuristi. Legge introdotta con l’inganno, come confermato da numerosi parlamentari, come sub-emendamento di un articolo di recepimento di direttiva europea sulla sicurezza degli ascensori all’interno di un pacchetto legislativo di recepimento di variegate direttive europee (“legge europea 2017”). Legge che oggi pone l’italia unica in europa in una condizione di sorveglianza massiva, sopratutto guardando alle modalità i raccolta di dati di traffico telematico effettuati da parte degli operatori mobili con metodiche di CGNAT, ovvero quelle metodiche che portano alla registrazione di tutti i siti visitati dai propri utenti. Un cittadino italiano nel 2023 non ricorderà sicuramente che sito avesse visitato l’8 Giugno 2018 alle ore 18.15. Ma lo stato italiano si. Tenendo conto di tale grave, ampia e indiscriminata condizione di lesione dei diritti civili dell’intera popolazione residente nello stato Italiano, si conferisce il premio Minaccia Nazionale al Parlamento della Repubblica ed in particolare ai firmatari della legge in oggetto, Walter Verini, Mara Mucci e Giuseppe Berretta.

Minaccia Internazionale: assegnato, senza riguardo alla nazionalità, a chi più gravemente minaccia i diritti dei cittadini digitali

Minaccia da una vita: assegnato a chi ha meritato per più anni consecutivi uno dei premi precedenti

In un mondo in veloce cambiamento poche aziende avrebbero potuto rimanere sulla cresta dell’onda per anni e anni riuscendo a sviare, rimandare, procrastinare sempre l’adozione di misure minime di rispetto dei propri utenti e della loro privacy. Facebook ci è riuscita e merita un premio speciale alla carriera per essere restata sempre fedele alla propria intima natura di violatore, molestatore, minacciatore dell’identità digitale dei cittadini nascondendo dietro un contratto di servizio e delle fantomatiche regole sociali della comunità la violazione dei più basilari diritti all’identità e dignità dei cittadini. Gli scandali recenti hanno però portato il fondatore a mostrare con disarmante candore la vera faccia di Facebook in un’audizione pubblica al Congresso degli Stati Uniti (da notare che in Europa l’equivalente audizione è stata tenuta a porte chiuse, perché noi europei non abbiamo diritto alla conoscenza, potrebbe farci male) la reale natura del network: non essere sociale ma… “Senator, we run ads”. Fanno pubblicità, tutto qui, e senza neppure lo sforzo di investire nella realizzazione di un contenuto accattivante ma semplicemente proponendo in modo selettivo ad ogni proprio utente ciò che solletica di più le sue risposte meno mediate, e lo tiene attaccato praticamente un grande distributore di odio di scala planetaria. Cari utenti di Facebook, voi non siete il loro prodotto, è la parte peggiore di voi, l’odio, l’invidia, il disprezzo, il risentimento, l’intolleranza, che gli algoritmi di Facebook selezioneranno accuratamente per mostrarli a chi più verrà offeso da questo. Lo chiamano engagemnt: è l’apoteosi della brutalità e dell’inciviltà.

Paladino della Privacy: viene assegnato all’ente o alla persona che ha difeso i diritti dei cittadini digitali con un’iniziativa importante ed originale

Il premio positivo 2018 viene assegnato ad Altroconsumo, per la sua meritoria iniziativa di tutela dei dati personali dei cittadini, attuata tramite una class action contro Facebook insieme ad altre associazioni di consumatori di Belgio, Spagna e Portogallo. Altroconsumo ha chiesto che i consumatori europei vengano risarciti, che vengano correttamente informati sull’uso che viene fatto dei loro dati e che possano scegliere consapevolmente in qualsiasi momento quali di questi condividere. Tenendo conto dei benefici commerciali che Facebook ha ottenuto violando la protezione dei dati e le normative a tutela dei consumatori, Altroconsumo chiede, per gli aderenti e per tutti gli utenti iscritti a Facebook, un risarcimento minimo di 200 euro (tra valore economico dei dati e danni morali), che può variare sulla base dell’utilizzo di Facebook e dagli anni di iscrizione al social.
