The Best Friends Deserve Bester
Chuck Taylor and Trent Beretta have been teaming together as The Best Friends since August 2013. In January 2014, they won PWG's Dynamite Duumvirate Tag Team Title Tournament, becoming number one contenders to the PWG World Tag Team Championship. They lost their subsequent challenge against The Young Bucks at Mystery Vortex II. The only other time Chuck and Trent have competed for those titles was at 2019's Hand of Doom where they lost to The Rascalz. What that means is that out of seven teams who won the PWG DDT4 between 2007 and 2015, The Best Friends are the only ones to have never held the PWG World Tag Team Championship.
Tumblr media
Alright, well maybe they had better luck in NJPW. Trent's a four-time IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champion with Rocky Romero. If Roppongi Vice can succeed, then I'm sure The Best Friends can... come fourth in the B Block in the 2017 World Tag League and finish eighth overall in the 2018 League.
Tumblr media
No, that make sense. Best Friends as a team have always been predominantly American based. What about their ROH run in 2017? I know they had a few title matches there.
Loss vs. The Young Bucks in ROH World Tag Team Championship tornado three way match at Best in the World 2017 (also featured War Machine)
Loss vs. Kenny Omega & The Young Bucks in ROH Six Man Tag Team Championship match at Global Wars 2017 Day 3 (teamed with Flip Gordon)
Loss vs. Kenny Omega & The Young Bucks in ROH Six Man Tag Team Championship match on ROH Wrestling Episode #326 (teamed with Rocky Romero)
Loss vs. Motor City Machine Guns in ROH World Tag Team Championship match at Final Battle 2017
Tumblr media
Ok, enough messing around. Let's get into the AEW run. Orange Cassidy has done a great job as International Champion. Kris Statlander is enjoying a good reign as TBS Champion. How have Chuck and Trent done?
Win vs. SCU and Private Party at Fyter Fest 2019 to advance to All Out for an opportunity at a first round bye in the AEW World Tag Team Championship tournament (good start)
Loss vs. Dark Order at All Out 2019 (who needs a first round bye anyway?)
Loss vs. SCU in first round of AEW World Tag Team Championship tournament (ah, that bye would have been handy)
Loss vs. Kenny Omega & Adam Page in a Number One Contender's Fatal Four Way (also featured The Young Bucks and Proud & Powerful) (got four-and-a-half stars from Dave Meltzer)
Loss to The Young Bucks in a Number One Contender's Battle Royal (not gonna list all the other teams)
Win vs. Private Party in a Number One Contender's match at Double Or Nothing 2020 (that's more like it)
Win vs. Chris Jericho & Sammy Guevara to remain number one contenders (yes, go on lads!)
Loss vs. Kenny Omega & Adam Page in AEW World Tag Team Championship match on Dynamite: Fyter Fest 2020 Day 1 (ah, damn it)
Loss to FTR in Number One Contender's Gauntlet match (again, not gonna list all the other teams)
Win vs. Proud & Powerful in a Parking Lot Fight (FIVE STARS BAYBEE!)
Loss to reDRagon in a Number One Contender's Battle Royal (AEW love them some battle royals)
Loss to The Young Bucks in a Number One Contender's Casino Tag Team Royale (this was literally the week after the previous battle royal)
Win w/Orange Cassidy vs. The Trustbusters in first round of AEW Trios Championship tournament (ooo, promising)
Loss w/Orange Cassidy vs. Adam Page & Dark Order in semi-final of AEW Trios Championship tournament (never mind, I guess)
Loss w/Orange Cassidy vs. Death Triangle for vacant AEW Trios Championship (can't tell me they shouldn't have won this one given PAC was already All-Atlantic Champion at the time)
Loss w/Orange Cassidy vs. Death Triangle in AEW Trios Championship match (one day lads, one day)
Loss w/Orange Cassidy to AR Fox & Top Flight in $300,000 Three Kings Christmas Casino Trios Battle Royal (we're really taking the piss now with these battle royals)
Loss to Jay Lethal & Jeff Jarrett in Revolution Tag Team Battle Royal (they were literally the runners up in this one, come on)
Loss w/Orange Cassidy vs. House of Black in AEW Trios Championship match (stop teasing me)
Loss vs. Aussie Open in IWGP Tag Team Championship match (they could have had a Japan run after all)
Loss w/Bandido vs. House of Black in AEW Trios Championship match (Bandido's cool but surely it's gotta be Orange for the eventual trios run)
Loss vs. Aussie Open in ROH World Tag Team Championship Fatal Four Way at ROH Death Before Dishonor 2023 (also featured Lucha Bros and The Kingdom) (another big win coming any day now)
Loss vs. Jon Moxley & Claudio Castagnoli in Parking Lot Brawl (four-and-a-half stars for the Parking Lot sequel)
Win w/Orange Cassidy, Eddie Kingston & Penta vs. Jon Moxley, Claudio Castagnoli, Wheeler Yuta, and Proud & Powerful in Stadium Stampede at All In 2023 (the biggest of big wins, another four-and-a-half stars)
Loss to Dark Order in ROH Number One Contender's Battle Royal (great way to follow up that momentum after All In)
Loss to The Righteous in ROH Number One Contender's Fatal Four Way (also featured The Hardys and The Kingdom) (again, great follow up)
Tumblr media
Obviously there's been more matches in between the ones I highlighted. The Best Friends have had some good moments here and there but overall, it feels like there's been missed opportunities. No follow up after the initial Parking Lot Brawl. No Trios Championship run. Lost in the shuffle again following All In.
Tumblr media
The Best Friends deserve bester.

Anthem has terminated TNA president Scott D'Amore, and replaced him with one of the Anthem execs. I wasn't sure what to make of this, but a couple of interesting stories came out today.
First, Dave Meltzer suggested that the only point of contention he could think of between D'Amore and Anthem is that he was often lobbying to increase TNA's budget and grow the company. Anthem kept turning down his proposals, preferring to stay the course with TNA. (This is particularly funny to me since I just last night wrote at length about TNA's current course, and that I don't understand how Anthem can afford to sustain that business model.)
So that's interesting, but it doesn't seem like a good enough reason to fire D'Amore. But then, Mike Johnson reported that D'Amore made an offer to buy TNA from Anthem. Huh.
Evidently D'Amore's bid "was seen as a legitimate offer that was worthy of consideration, but the decision was made not to accept." That tells me Scott (somehow) has the financial backing to afford TNA, and a plan to not lose his shirt running a promotion of that size. It also tells me that Anthem is (for whatever reason) fully committed to TNA--if they were looking to get out, they just missed their exit.
In this context the termination makes sense. Anthem must have realized that declining D'Amore's offer would motivate him to start up a competing promotion. At that point, the situation would be similar to Bushiroad's dispute with Rossy Ogawa over STARDOM's roster. Anthem must have become worried that keeping D'Amore around would give him opportunities to convince talent to jump ship. Now that he's outside the company, he can't do that without being liable for contract tampering, which limits the damage he could (potentially) do to TNA.
If D'Amore starts a new promotion, and if enough of his loyalists decide to quit TNA to follow him, that could be interesting. However, we've more or less seen this movie before, when Jeff Jarrett left TNA (and took D'Amore with him) to create Global Force Wrestling. I had high hopes that GFW could shake things up the pro wrestling, but it never amounted to anything. If Scott D'Amore is going to try that stunt again, he'll be under a lot of pressure to demonsrate that it's not just Global Force Part Deux.

"Creativity is what makes humanity move. We were created to participate."
Keith Jarrett who turns 79 today.
"Over the Rainbow", performed in Tokyo 1984.
(English / Español / Italiano)
Possessing perfect pitch, while in high school, he heard a live performance of Dave Brubeck, and when invited to study classical composition in Paris, he was already leaning toward jazz and turned it down. He got kicked out of Berklee College of Music for playing the piano strings and "messing" with the inside of the piano. His first commercial record was with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, and he went on work and record with Charles Lloyd and Miles Davis.
By the early 1970s, Jarrett's improvisations drew from the traditions of jazz and other genres, including Western classical music, gospel, blues, and ethnic folk music.
His album, 'The Köln Concert,' became the best-selling piano recording in history. Jarrett received the Polar Music Prize and was the first recipient to be recognized with prizes for both contemporary and classical music.
In 2018, Jarrett suffered two strokes and has been unable to perform since. But we still dream of the possibilities of what lies ahead.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ALMOST LIVESTREAM: HERLIN RILEY with Stacy Dillard, Dave Torkanowsky, and Max Moran, JAZZ ST LOUIS, 4 APRIL 2024
This one wasn’t on the subscription list, but I am glad to have had the Thursday night livestream as a taste of the New Orleans party that was in town this week. HERLIN RILEY is part of the proteges of Ellis Marsalis that includes his sons, Jazz St Louis President Victor Goines, and pianist Dave Torkanowsky. The band had a groove going when Riley came onstage with a second line going with just a tambourine and Mardi Gras Indian chants. It was Twelve’s It, an Ellis Marsalis tune which went from the funk to a lyrical middle section and back to the funk with every member of the band getting a chance to shine.
Stacy Dillard is a Small’s regular whom I see with others and rarely in his own right. But he’s a fine player with sufficient fire and groove to serve this tradition. Dave Torkanowsky had moments of subtlety and lyricism to go with the power and percussiveness he was signed up to provide. Max Moran is a big presence on bass. HERLIN RILEY is charismatic and, at the risk of faint praise, perfectly capable. He was not an astonishing magician, but somehow there’s a thickness to the NOLA rhythms that sneak up on you. You have to be perfectly capable to pull off that deceptive trick which Riley most certainly was.
There were two James Black tunes, New Arrival in the second slot and Whistle Stop to close (with Victor Goines). Black was a role model for Riley as a drummer/composer/bandleader. He stayed at home, it would appear, so he is not widely enough known. He probably won’t be—or he’ll be in with similar figures like Ralph Peterson and James Williams as musicians’ musicians, but like them have made important contributions. There were three Riley compositions, also winning, varied, and challenging. Riley too may well be one of those craftspeople who importantly uphold a tradition. He put on a fine fine show but I don’t regret not being in the room even though it was quite a party. They encored with Tootie Ma Is a Big Fine Thing, a bit of a single entendre tune, by Danny Barker, a banjoist who had a church brass band in the late 1960s/1970s in which Riley and his pals learned some basics.
The homestretch of the set got interesting as Riley’s Touched for his mother whom he cared for as she was dying was poignant; Bicycleta by a Cuban settled in NOLA had that open major chord Keith Jarrett groove with an obvious Latin tinge; and Ivan Lenz’s ballad Love Dance proved decisively, as this whole stretch made the case, that they could all play delicately.
New Orleans remains perhaps THE important jazz city even if New York is the center of its gravity. I need to remember that and appreciate this reminder.

Pro Wrestling Illustrated: 1995 THE YEAR IN WRESTLING. March 1996
MOST IMPROVED WRESTLER OF THE YEAR “DIAMOND” DALLAS PAGE: 21,919 votes
Managing was supposed to be “Diamond” Dallas Page’s specialty–his only specialty. So when he decided to begin competing as a wrestler full-time a few years back, well, it looked like an even worse move; Page just didn’t look like a wrestler.
Eventually, though, Page became more than a wrestler, he became a champion. In the process, he became Most Improved Wrestler of the Year for 1995.
“For a guy who used to do nothing but talk, talk, talk,” wrote Brenda Parmalee of Houston, “Page has come a long way.”
He certainly has. Page’s repertoire includes several different suplexes and a few nifty flying moves. He’s also a rugged, courageous brawler, and his stamina has improved greatly. Perhaps most important, he also possesses a finishing maneuver: an excellent version of the DDT that he calls the “Diamond Cutter.”
In a sense, his success should come as no surprise. As manager of Badd Company in the AWA, and later The Freebirds, Page proved himself an excellent instructor, as well as a fine strategist. Now he’s merely using for himself what he had tried to impart to others.
“Page always liked to brag that he was so great,” wrote Carl Belinda of Ames. Iowa. “Now he’s starting to back up his boasts. About time.”
He has backed them up with wins over Dave Sullivan, Hacksaw Duggan, Alex Wright, and Johnny B. Badd, and especially with his Tv title victory over The Renegade at Fall Brawl.
“It doesn’t surprise me that DDP won a title,” said Pat Tanka, whom Page managed in Badd Company. “He always said he wanted to wrestle more. It took him a while to get going, but once he started winning, he wasn’t going to let anything get in his way.”
As dramatically as Page has improved, the consensus is that he’d be even better if he didn't spend so much time trying to impress the Diamond Doll. His attempts to win her interest have forced him to make bad decisions.
“He’s also  jealous of the attention she gets,” Sting explained. “He loses his cool and does stupid things. He’s lucky it hasn’t cost him much yet, but he better be aware of it.”
On the other hand, Page may not have improved so strongly if Doll hadn’t been there to inspire him.
RUNNERS-UP
TOMMY DREAMER: 14,910 votes
First runner-up: Dreamer began showing marked improvement after he returned to ECW from a tour of Japan early in the year. He’s quicker, he’s a better brawler (especially outside of the ring), and he executes an excellent DDT. For most of the year, Dreamer feuded with Raven in ECW, where many fans consider him the ultimate hardcore wrestler and cheer him wildly.
HARLEM HEAT: 12,613 votes
Second runner-up: Despite having won several titles in Texas, Booker T and Stevie Ray were unheralded when they signed with Sherri Martel in 1994. After a dubious start, they have gone on to win four WCW World tag team titles. In a memorable feud with The Nasty Boys, they displayed increased confidence and finely honed killer instinct.
SAVIO VEGA: 9,983 votes
Third runner-up: At the beginning of 1995, Vega wasn’t doing much. Then he came to the WWF in May. rescued Razor Ramon from an attack by Jeff Jarrett and The Roadie, and started looking like a winner himself. He is a martial arts master as well as a better-than-average brawler. He’s a good friend of Razor, and that has helped him gain opportunities for success.
VOTES FOR OTHERS (15,812)
Some of the top vote-getters who did not capture a runner-up spot include: Jesse James Armstrong, Barry Horowitz, Jean-Pierre Lafitte, Dan Severn, and Taz.

The Traveling Mummy of Elmer McCurdy
While filming a scene for the Six Million Dollar Man at The Pike Amusement Zone in Long Beach, California, a crew member broke the arm off what he thought was a mannequin. On taking a closer look, he could see bone within the broken appendage.
What he had accidentally discovered was the lost remains of a long-time sideshow attraction, the mummified remains of Oklahoma outlaw Elmer McCurdy.
Elmer’s body was a long way from home. Quite the seasoned traveler, McCurdy’s body had seen a lot more of the country in death than it did in life.
Elmer McCurdy was born on New Year’s Day in Washington, Maine, 1880, to a teenage mother who gave the infant Elmer to her brother and wife to raise. Not a whole lot is known about his early life up till the point where he spent three years in the U.S. Army.
During his time in the army, McCurdy took up a liking of nitroglycerine, a highly unstable explosive liquid. After his time in the army, and whilst looking for work, drifting about the states, McCurdy utilized his knowledge with the explosive to see his way into a gang of bank and train robbers.
It was then McCurdy put his nitroglycerine knowledge to good use, blowing up safes in order to access the money inside. Well, that was the idea anyway.
His first attempt to blow up a safe on a train went miserably wrong. McCurdy placed too much nitroglycerine at the safes door, and not only blew it off its hinges, but also blew a hole in the side of the train and splashed the now partially liquefied silver coins about the carriage. The gang attempted to scrape the silver off of the floor and walls but only managed to collect a little.
Suffice to say, McCurdy needed to seek out a new gang in order to ply his explosive knowledge.
After being arrested for holding tools used for burglary, and subsequently being released under a verdict of not guilty, McCurdy met a man by the name of Walter Jarrett. Jarrett gave McCurdy the tough outlaw name Missouri McCurdy, and the two spent a time blowing safes and money up together, in a number of bungled burglaries.
But soon McCurdy heard of a money train, which had a carriage containing a safe with thousands of Dollars inside it, a veritable fortune back in those days. The gang went to Okesa, Oklahoma in order to rob the train, but once again McCurdy bungled the deal. This time he did not blow up the money, but had rather got the wrong train. Instead of a money train carrying thousands of dollars, the gang robbed a passenger train and made away with $46 and a few bottles of whiskey.
After the robbery, McCurdy made his way to a farm owned by a man named Dave Sears to lay low for a few days, a large $2000 rewards was set for those who could bring him in, and a armed posse was on his trail. On October 6th 1911, Sears transported a very drunk McCurdy to another farm, but a Sheriff and his Deputies learned that McCurdy had been to Sears farm and soon set to questioning him.
Sears gave in and pointed Sheriff Freas to the location McCurdy was now resting. He also warned the sheriff that he had given McCurdy a shotgun, but also more whiskey, so if acting soon, the sheriff should be able to get him while he was drunk.
At about 7am on the 6th of October the sheriff and his two deputies surrounded a hayshed where McCurdy was sleeping. Sheriff Freas then yelled at McCurdy to give himself up, but the response was a streak of curses and an hour long stand-off.
Then McCurdy fired several shots at the sheriff and his men, and it was on!
The gun fight was so intense and prolonged that neighbor’s turned up to watch the battle. The hour long exchange of fire continued until shots heard coming from the hay shed ceased. A young boy was sent in to check on McCurdy. Not seeing anything the Pawhuska chief of police entered the shed and ascended the ladder to the loft, lead by the stock of his rifle, adorned with his hat.
No shots were fired or any other response was had. McCurdy was dead, with a rifle bullet in his chest. One of the deputy’s bullets had hit home, killing the outlaw. McCurdy’s last words were reported as being “You will never take me alive!”
McCurdy’s body was taken to a funeral home in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, but no one claimed him. The embalmer preserved the body, then allowed visitors to see the spectacle of the Missouri McCurdy for a nickel a piece. Every visitor would place their nickel in McCurdy’s mouth, and at the end of the day the undertaker would take the collection.
For nearly five years McCurdy’s dead body provided another source of income for the funeral home, until one day a man claiming to be McCurdy’s brother showed up to give his brother a proper burial. The funeral home released McCurdy into the man’s care, and within a fortnight, the Great Patterson Shows carnival had a new exhibit.
Many people flocked to see the body of the Outlaw who would not give up, and soon he was making much more money then he ever had when he was alive.
For over 60 years McCurdy’s body was traded and sold, from carnival operator to carnival operator and curiosity museums. Once he was even used to pay a default on a loan to a bank!
As the years passed, his body suffered the wear and tear of being such a sought after attraction, until after a time, it was forgotten that it was a body at all. Soon he found himself in tacky displays, finally to be painted bright red and hanged naked from the rafters of the Laff in the Dark fun house at the new Pike Amusement Park.
During the filming of an episode of The Six Million Dollar Man, the director didn’t like the dummy hanging from the rafters. A crewman cut it down, and in the process, broke the arm, causing the rediscovery of Elmer McCurdy.
In 1976 he was examined by forensic anthropologists, who discovered the gunshot wound, the make, model and year of a bullet jacket lodged in his hip, and were able to confirm the bodies identity.
On April 22, 1977, Elmer McCurdy, outlaw and safe cracker was finally given a proper burial in Summit View Cemetery, Oklahoma. Several cubic yards of concrete were poured over his coffin so McCurdy will never be interrupted from his well earned and final rest.

Gene Luen Yang
Quotes inspired from American Born Chinese series: “Children are mirrors; they will always show you exactly what is going on inside of you. Each phase of their growth is an opportunity to heal your own pain, to go deeper inside yourself and become more truly human”
― Vimala McClure, The Tao of Motherhood
“Kids are like a mirror, what they see and hear they do. Be a good reflection for them.”
— Kevin Heath
Popular answered Q for Gene Luen Yang from Goodreads: Q: I'm a writer & Catholic convert & I really enjoy how you explore catholic themes in a way that non-Catholics can still relate (esp in Boxers&Saints & TheEternalSmile) Any advice on how you pull that off?
Gene Luen Yang : My Buddhist creative writing professor at U.C.Berkeley told me to never write about faith directly. Instead, you should live your faith and write your life. I've been trying to follow that advice ever since.
Q: What are you currently working on?
I'm working on a middle grade graphic novel series called Secret Coders with an amazing cartoonist named Mike Holmes.
Gene Luen Yang : It's kind of like Harry Potter - tweens discover a mysterious secret school. Only instead of magic, the school teaches computer coding. We're hoping that as the readers read about our protagonists becoming coders, they'll become coders themselves.
Q: When you were writing American Born Chinese, did you actually hear those stories from your parents or did you just make it up? Also how did you start writing and drawing? Huge fan of all your books!
Gene Luen Yang : Thank you!
I first heard the Monkey King's story from my mom. Great character -- you should read Journey to the West if you want to experience the original.
I started drawing when I was two and haven't stopped!
Q: I teach English as a second language and American Born Chinese has brought excitement and depth to the conversations about the craft of writing to my classroom. My students' wonder - why did you choose to become a writer? Also, what books do you recommend for elementary students?
Gene Luen Yang: Thank you so much for teaching American Born Chinese! It's an honor to be a part of your classroom.
Both my parents are storytellers. It was a part of my childhood, so I always wanted to tell stories myself.
There are all sorts of great graphic novels for elementary students! Check out work by Raina Telgemeier, Dave Roman, Kazu Kibuishi, Jenny and Matt Holm, Frank Cammuso, Ben Hatke, Jarrett Krosoczka.
