buffy is absolutely my favorite character... i know its like a given but like its not just because shes the main character there are plenty of other characters i love with my entire heart and fully believe could be my favorites if buffy was not the best character of all time in the world ever... like genuinely i cant name a better woman... she means so much to me <3 but i have far too many favorite characters in the show it still hurts not to mention them... picking a favorite storyline is sooo so tough but once more with feeling is my favorite episode that one just means a lot to me and i think its super well done and does actually have some of my favorite storylines in it!!! like buffys arc during s6 means a lot to me and i love her so much... just felt very connected to her during that and think the music is really great and ties in perfectly with the actual plot and characters!! i also really love the dawn storyline its so fucked up that people hate it because they found dawn annoying she is literally just a girl. a young girl going through horrors beyond comprehension and her and buffys relationship is SO Important to me... it introduced so many things and was so good for her character in my opinion. also the whole drusilla/spike/angelus storyline is really good... the faith storyline Of Course is everything in the world ever... a lot of really good ones i could go on forever but!! favorite outfit... theres so many floating around in my head right now but i think a lot about willows scooby doo shirt, honestly so many of willows outfits, xanders i <3 dirt shirt, buffys leather jacket, her cheetah dress with it... her pink cherry skirt, her overalls, that one with the little scarf choker and the pink sunglasses, prophecy girl dress, all of faiths outfits, taras outfit in the 'under your spell' scene, anyas little pjs in that ep too... drusillas white dress and her red dress and coat <333 the red shirt and red glittery pants and coat she wears in angel... her and darlas outfits back in the day.. so many good ones im bound to leave some out :( and i must move on lest i list every outfit on the show off.. for favorite monsters i really loved hush the entire episode is great and the gentleman are so good... id also have to say the queller demon was pretty creepy and der kindestod was probably the creepiest monster on the show for me!! i remember genuinely being like ... wtf when he walked past the door that first time!! what about yours if you wanna share too? <3

will never stop being emo about how Buffy’s relationship, structurally, to her shadow selves and narrative foils shifts entirely after s2. the way that compared to Cordelia and Kendra she’s the freak and the wild one and the loose canon and then compared to Faith and Spike she’s the conservative and repressed and careful one and thinking about how her entire emotional landscape is forever altered by the angelus trauma and the loss of kendra, how she never gets to be that young and untroubled again :)))))))) and I feel FINE about it why do you ask :))))))) thinking abt how by mid series she’s so far away from being integrated with her own innocence that her innocence now lives in an externalized figure, dawn :)))))))) thinking about how there’s something about how buffy dying and returning in the s1 finale gives her this buoyancy, this power, this strength, this ultimate final girl narrative energy, and then her finding kendra’s dead body in the s2 finale is this narrative mirror to that. because that’s her, that’s a part of her, that’s not the only freak / not any more and how can you look at someone who is a part of you, dead on the ground in the same library where you gloated over the master’s bones, and not go a little bit hard inside, not curl up and retract and try to protect yourself because it’s not safe otherwise ….

UR SO RIGHT w the reading abt dawn representing buffy’s innocence i love that. just. like as someone w trauma ik that i would do *anything* to protect someone else from that trauma and like? dawn reflecting the parts of buffy that she had to lose? buffy’s child self who was lost, in a way, cause buffy’s innocence died when she became the slayer?? and buffy is simultaneously grieving what might have been (how her life could have played out, had she not been forced into what rlly is a traumatic situation, frankly), which makes her jealous of/annoyed at dawn, while she’s also protecting her bc that’s her sister, that’s someone she loves, and no matter how angry she gets at dawn she will never wish her own trauma and grief on that kid. which makes it so!! deep and upsetting!! bc it just shows how much of an impact all the slayer duties have had on buffy. like she tends to be strong and casual abt it, make jokes all the times, doesn’t show that it’s hurting her. she has this mentality that she’s just stronger than everyone else (i mean physically that’s true but emotionally, she’s only human). but the way she treats and interacts with dawn just!! absolutely shows exactly how it’s affected her!! her projecting a bit on dawn is when she’s actually being her most emotionally vulnerable!! UGH okay i’m sorry for ranting i love dawn and i love btvs and it speaks to me <333 i feel like btvs as a whole can be seen as an extended metaphor for experiencing a lot of trauma in childhood for like a million reasons actually !! again sorry for ranting in ur inbox lol

“Hey, B.”

Buffy opened her eyes. Before she could even wonder what time it was, her girlfriend’s face obscured her vision.

Faith’s brown eyes were alight with mischief and the grin on her face just kept growing.

Buffy yawned. “What time is it?”

“Early, but I have to show you something.”

“Now?” Buffy raised her eyebrows.

“Uh, yeah? You’ll love it. I promise.” Faith pressed a kiss to her forehead.

Buffy pouted at her. “I was sleeping.”

Her girlfriend gently dragged her lips along Buffy’s face, stopping to press kisses to Buffy’s nose and then to both of her cheeks.

Buffy scrunched up her nose, unable to fight back her giggles.

“Are you still asleep now?” Faith teased, leaving a trail of kisses from Buffy’s chin to her shoulder.

“No…” Buffy relented. Faith was winning.

“By the way, it’s 9.”

“Well... that’s not so unreasonably early…”

Faith laughed and grabbed Buffy’s hand, helping the other slayer sit up. She noticed that Faith was already dressed.

“What have you been doing?”

"You'll see."

Buffy frowned at her, but she knew that she wasn't going to get any more of an explanation right then, so she decided to play along.

Taking a short shower, she contemplated what tricks Faith would have up her sleeve. She didn't want to keep her girlfriend waiting for too long, so she skipped the jewellery and just put on a t-shirt and jeans. Tying her hair back with an elastic band, she walked into the kitchen.

Faith leaned forwards against the counter, resting on her elbows. Dawn and Willow were up too, working on making pancakes.

The two of them and Faith were sharing knowing smiles. It was sort of off-putting. Xander was up and seated at the dining table, reading a newspaper. He was seemingly oblivious to the unspoken conversation, letting out a huge yawn after he greeted the newly awake slayer.

Buffy barely finished her cup of coffee before her girlfriend tossed Buffy’s denim jacket at her. Faith was already wearing her leather one. Luckily, Buffy was used to keeping up with her, quickly following Faith out the door and onto the sunny streets.

“It’s nice to see you so excited,” Buffy said. Faith’s hand firmly gripped hers, dragging Buffy along behind her. “But where are we going?”

“It’s a surprise,” Faith said. She looked at Buffy over her shoulder, smiling mischievously. “Wouldn’t be one if I told you, B.”

Buffy let out another yawn, covering it with her other hand. She didn’t know this city yet. They had only been renting an apartment here for couple months... so far. It barely fit the scoobies, the new slayers, and she had been too busy to really give the city a good look. When had Faith found the time?

They soon found themselves in front of a different apartment complex, a fifteen minute walk from their own. Buffy expected her girlfriend to continue dragging her along past it, but they stopped.

“What is this place?” Buffy said.

Faith didn’t answer audibly. She just grinned and led Buffy to the entrance.

Buffy looked up at the building. It was six stories high and it was definitely on the older side, overdue for a new paint job. She was soon distracted by the realization that her girlfriend had clearly been here before. Faith used a keycard, rather than pressing the buzzer, to open the door.

They didn't linger in the small lobby, heading immediately for the stairs.

There was the strong smell of carpet cleaner and Buffy found herself gazing around at the decor. Old-looking paintings decorated the walls, and the wall paint was chipped in places.

The pair walked up two flights of stairs before making their way down the hallway, passing door after door until they eventually stopped in front of one marked 317.

Faith’s cocky demeanour seemingly evaporated then. She glanced down at the carpeted floor. When she looked back up at Buffy, apprehension was written all over Faith's face. “I got the keys yesterday,” she said quietly. “Place is paid for... for the month.”

“You… got an apartment?” Buffy blinked.

“Yeah,” Faith admitted. She let go of Buffy’s hand. “I figured that you could use someplace more quiet, to collect your strength?" She stuck both of her own hands into the pockets of her leather jacket. "I looked at a lot of places and I figured that you would like it. Let me know if you don’t, okay?”

“You bought me an apartment?”

“Yeah... well, I bought one for us.”

Buffy ducked her head and smiled.

Faith pulled out a key and opened the door. She grabbed Buffy’s hand before the two of them walked inside.

It wasn’t incredibly spacious, but the small kitchen and living area would be enough for a few people to get together. This place was certainly nicer than the rest of the building. Nothing fancy, but at least the paint seemed more fresh.

“There’s two bedrooms,” Faith said. “They’re small but I figure that one could be ours." She pointed. "And the other could be a weapons room... or maybe even Dawn’s room. It’s up to you, B.”

Buffy walked around the place. She walked into the bathroom and then both of the bedrooms. She could picture it. They wouldn’t be holed up in this city forever. That was certain but…It was nice.

And the idea of getting some more quiet time? Heavenly.

Buffy returned to Faith’s side. The other slayer was perched on the edge of the kitchen counter. Buffy took a seat next to her.

“So…?”

“I love it.”

Faith smiled. “Knew you would.” Though the way that she averted her gaze, suggested that she hadn't been completely certain.

Buffy grinned at her and slid closer to her. “Yeah...” She grabbed Faith’s hand.

“So does this mean you’re moving in with me?”

“Hmm,” Buffy pretended to think on it. She sent her girlfriend a smirk. “I think you have me convinced.”

Then Faith’s lips were on hers. Her hands were running through Buffy’s hair. Buffy rested one hand on the side of her girlfriend's neck. Her other hand firmly gripped Faith's shoulder. In response, her girlfriend draped a leg over one of Buffy's.

The blonde slayer was filled a warm satisfaction at the fact that the two could finally have their own place.

When they eventually parted, Buffy gazed into an intense set of brown eyes.

“I love you,” Buffy said.

Faith smiled. “I love you, too.”

Okaaaaay for the ask thingie: 1) the trend mostly on tumblr to promote "girl love" between characters who canonically dont have that (ex. Buffy/Cordelia) 2) female storyline decimation in favour of males 3) similarly voyerism? You know, manic pixie dream girl stuff and how males idolize their perfect girl and stuff. Some examples would be fantastic

1) The trend of promoting “girl love” between characters whodon’t canonly have it

Honestly this trend baffles me more than anything else. Iunderstand the desire to see f/f friendships onscreen especially since womenare so often pitted against one another but I don’t think the solution is topush forward friendships which have no basis. The Cordy/Buffy example isparticularly good because neither girl has ever particularly liked or thoughthighly of the other, so it’s confusing as to why the fandom seems to see/want a friendship between them. It’s even odder given that Buffy has strong f/f friendships with Willow, Dawn and Tara, so why thefandom feels the need to pretend that she and Cordy are BFFs is a littleconfusing.

I think it’s even more irritating when this is done In-Universe, for example over on TheFlash Caitlin Snow and Iris West, two characters who barely interacted in thefirst couple of seasons, are now being portrayed as close enough for Iris to beable to bring Caitlin out of her Killer Frost persona and have her as her MaidOf Honour. Friendships need to be developed organically and over time, you can’tjust throw two characters together and declare that they’re suddenly bestfriends, no one’s going to buy it.

2) Female storyline decimated in favour of male storylines

Few things in fiction piss me off more than a female’s arcand agency being ignored or ruined in favour of a male’s. Two examples stronglyspring to mind, both from the Buffyverse; Buffy’s recovery from herrelationship with Spike being brushed aside in order for Spike’s story toevolve and Fred’s arc and narrative being shoved aside to make way for Wes’arc. In both cases, these arcs are built on the backs of these women’s pain andtrauma. It’s so gross, honestly.

There is just no reasonto use this particular narrative. Female characters should be allowed tohave their own independent arcs and storylines and not be used as props formale storylines. While I understand that certain storylines intersect andsupport and add depth to the characters, there’s no reason to decimate a femalestoryline to make way for a male one, especially these days.

3) Voyeurism/MPDG/Idolizing females

Another narrative trait I find beyond annoying, I really can’tstand the MPDG trope and unless the story is making a specific point about malevoyeurism and the way men idealise females (such as movies like The VirginSuicides or The Beguiled) I don’t like when it’s done in fiction, for exampleany Mary Sue character, such as Lana Lang or Betty Cooper being idealized bythe men within the narrative. It places unrealistic expectations on women ingeneral and makes it so that girls looking for representation in media will endup with some warped expectation that they must be “perfect”, that they existjust to indulge male fantasy. And that needs to stop.

graveyards & basements: season 4 + the subterranean

like ok, season 4 is all about falling inside and outside of institutions, we know this (it's also about being queer, in the same vein). but right now im thinking about how that's also represented by physical spaces? btvs has always been a show about the underground, but in the early seasons this was always chiefly about monster fighting above all, with our characters only descending there for brief bouts of evil fighting or recon (characters descending into sewers or basements for some mission, but always coming back up)

but season 4 has oz's new wolf cage being in an underground crypt, and him stashing extra clothes there, making it almost homey. it has xander living in a basement and the other characters regularly lounging in it with him. it has the introduction of spike's crypt which has a huge underground level, and will become a major locus for future scooby goings-on . it's also got the initiative, this huge sprawling carved out underground operation, that becomes buffy's workplace for a time.

it's also the only season without a real scooby home base? (post-library, pre-magic box or buffy's house as hq). like, they have scooby meetings at giles' apartment but also in random UC sunnydale lounges and occasionally at buffy or xander's houses. in short, the scoobies are reconfiguring where they fit in the world. and that also applies to the physical spaces they inhabit. the scoobies are learning that subterranean spaces, which have been demon-coded from day 1, are also places they can naturally inhabit, that serve a function for them. they're reconciling that maybe they have more in common with the demons they fight than some of the other people fighting them

which is why i think it's also interesting that the underground scooby locations are all organically occurring? graveyards and basements, pre-existing features that crop up wherever people live. whereas the initiative's base is much more this artificial space gouged out in the earth—it doesn't fit, has no place in the community, so much so that when filled with concrete at the end of the season, it's like it was never there.

but the scooby subterranean spaces stay and adapt. we get out of xander's basement, but it remains a part of his psyche he always has to reckon with "the "you always end up back here" refrain in restless). spike's crypt will only become a more and more domestic space for the scoobies, at points like a second home (albeit in very different ways) for buffy and dawn. we later get acquainted with the magic box basement, also a place where life just happens—featuring sexually charged encounters for xanya and spuffy. and then following the destruction of spike's crypts lower levels, the show can't bear not giving him an underground, and produces the sunnydale high basement and then buffy's basement as spike's new home. and then! buffy's basement is literally buffy's last bedroom before the town and her house are destroyed. it's fully reconciled into her psyche now.

like just how, from season 4 onwards, the subterranean remains a vital part of the domestic lives of the scoobies, and signals their deepening integration of the demon world into their domestic space <333 it means so much 2 me actually

I know we’ve all talked about jewelry era spike but shut the fuck up we’re gonna talk about it some more, spike said I am in my slut era I need to wear shirts that are either way too tight or open at the chest and I need a minimum 6 pieces of silver jewelry on at all times, ideally rings or necklaces

No one is wearing tops and jeans like her rn.
