The Subtle British Pop Culture/Timeline In CHICKEN RUN

On occasion, I've pointed out when the original CHICKEN RUN is set.

It's often been written that CHICKEN RUN was "set in the '50s", a sort of vague descriptor of its rather dreary post-war England setting. One could assume that from the technology present in the movie, and the homages to 1950s prisoner-of-war films. The obvious ones being STALAG 17 (the number 17 is on the main hut that the chickens all plot in) and THE GREAT ESCAPE. The character Fowler was of the mascot division of the Royal Air Force during World War II. All that talk about his medals. Chocks away!

The easiest way to pinpoint when CHICKEN RUN is set, at the earliest, is knowing what the songs are.

The chickens, in a hut, dance to a cover of Joe Turner's 'Flip, Flop and Fly', Turner's original was released in 1955, an early example of a rock n' roll song. Britain certainly had rock n' roll in a pre-Beatles era, but it doesn't seem as well-known to the average American as American rockers - you know, Elvis, Little Richard, etc. - are to Brits.

Later in the film, Rocky the rooster is jamming out to 'The Wanderer' by Dion.

The song first appeared in North America in November of 1961 - both as a single and as an album track on RUNAROUND SUE (the title track another big hit for him), and if you look in the opening credits sequence, Mrs. Tweedy works with a calendar that says "November"... However, 'The Wanderer' was first released in the UK in January of 1962. And it doesn't seem like much time has passed since the opening credits and the end of the movie...

'The Wanderer' reached #10 in the UK, which was great for an American rock/pop song over there... If anything, the movie is likely set in November/December 1962, so that was plenty of time for 'The Wanderer' to climb the charts, and then be played on the radio every once in a while. Things took a little while in a pre-streaming age, ya know? *waves cane* *I'm actually not that old, nowhere near lol I just love this kinda pop culture history*

So CHICKEN RUN is still kind of a post-war/pre-Beatles England, and it's set in a secluded location inhabited by a middle-aged couple who likely wouldn't have had any idea what was going in the teen beat scene. The Beatles' 'Love Me Do', the single that really put them on the map in the UK, was released in early October of 1962. Being their first true single (not the 'My Bonnie' recording they did in Germany with Tony Sheridan), it charted at a great #17 in the UK... Which of course was nothing compared to what was to come, the strings of #1s, or at least close to that. 'Please Please Me' was the second single, released in January 1963, it hit #2 in the UK. Beatlemania pretty much becomes a thing in the UK by the middle of 1963... It would take a little while for us yanks to catch the fever...

Anyways, CHICKEN RUN is set in November/December 1962. Or maybe it's 1963, who knows, but I think it's pre-Beatlemania rural England. Yorkshire to be exact.

It's kinda funny how the Disney animated ONE HUNDRED AND ONE DALMATIANS shares some similarities in this regard. That film was released in January 1961, and is set in both London and rural England. Its second half during the late fall/early winter no less. The puppies arrive in October, as stated in the film, and the film ends during Christmastime. Snow everywhere, dreary atmosphere, etc.... And then you have the Tweedys in CHICKEN RUN. Mrs. Tweedy is kind of a combination of Cruella de Vil *and* Jasper. She's got the contempt for animals like Cruella, and is taller and the brains like Jasper. Horace, the shorter, pudgier one in the equation - who is onto what the animals are doing but isn't believed, is totally Mr. Tweedy.

That brings us to the recently-released CHICKEN RUN: DAWN OF THE NUGGET... The sequel swaps prisoner-of-war movies and World War II imagery for James Bond and MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE. Spy movies in general.

One look at Mrs. Tweedy's high-tech new factory shows that in *spades*. But the folks at Aardman Animations did their homework, a lot of the details and background design and such, it legitimately looks like the lair of a supervillain in a '60s spy movie. Much like how Nomanisan Island does in THE INCREDIBLES, another very midcentury modern-inspired movie and franchise. There's also that charming UPA-esque cartoon on how the chickens are processed into nuggets, great stuff there. I also kind of get a bit of a Gerry Anderson vibe here, too. He was known for marionette shows - done in a process called "Supermarionation" - like THUNDERBIRDS and CAPTAIN SCARLET AND THE MYSTERONS. I assume most of the crew behind these movies grew up watching those shows.

And of course, a big indicator... Towards the end of the film, all the chickens - brainwashed by mind-control collars that make them all happy-go-lucky - are being forced up an escalator to a popcorn chicken death. In this pretty creepy sequence, they're all doing this while Cliff Richard's 'Summer Holiday' plays in the background. The bright, pastel-colored set adorned with simplistic countryside-looking hills that these chickens are brainwashed in before they are to be ground into fast food is reminiscent of vintage British and European children's programs. I was thinking of stuff like THE MAGIC ROUNDABOUT and such, which was also a stop-motion production.

Oh yeah, 'Summer Holiday'. That song came out in January 1963, it was the title song for a movie that was *huge* in England when it first came out. Cliff Richard is the prime example of a pre-Beatles British pop/rock star, I feel he's almost synonymous with that period of British pop music before John, Paul, George, and Ringo showed up. So, CHICKEN RUN 2 is set *after* January 1963. Plus, Ginger and Rocky's daughter Molly needed some time to grow up a bit.

Either this was intentional or not, but it strangely adds up. It's pretty chronological, either by accident or they made sure they didn't have too many anachronisms... Other than the cartoonishly high tech of Mrs. Tweedy's Fun-Land Farms, but then again, the pie machine in the original CHICKEN RUN was kind of improbable too. But that's the fun of the CHICKEN RUN movies, so it's a staple.

And even in other Aardman works, there are fun nods to British pop culture and media. For example, in WALLACE & GROMIT: THE CURSE OF THE WERE-RABBIT, Art Garfunkel's 'Bright Eyes' can be heard on the car radio in one scene. Garfunkel is American, yes, but 'Bright Eyes' was composed and recorded for the soundtrack of the British animated classic WATERSHIP DOWN. Just in case you've never seen or even heard of that movie. WATERSHIP DOWN is about rabbits, and in the WALLACE & GROMIT movie, they're dealing with rabbits! Quite clever.

Another favorite of mine is in FARMAGEDDON: A SHAUN THE SHEEP MOVIE. Of course, Shaun the Sheep is spun off from WALLACE & GROMIT, he appeared in the short film A CLOSE SHAVE. The second SHAUN THE SHEEP movie brings in science fiction and aliens, a real 180 from the small-scale first film. At the end of the film, the Farmer accidentally gets onto the UFO and is not on Earth anymore! Before they get him back, a song called 'Forever Autumn' can be heard playing on a radio.

'Forever Autumn' is a rewrite of a Lego commercial jingle composed by Jeff Wayne in 1969, with lyrics by Gary Osborne and Paul Vigrass. The two lyricists recorded the first version of that song in 1972 for an album called QUEUES. A couple years later, Jeff Wayne got the idea to do a musical version of H. G. Wells' THE WAR OF THE WORLDS. A musical album, bringing in several mostly British talents to retell - through story and song - the British sci-fi staple. 'Forever Autumn' was covered for the album, with lead vocals sung by Justin Hayward of The Moody Blues. Of course, another British group... all for the section of the album in which the protagonist - a journalist - fears his wife had been killed in the Martian invasion. "'Cause you're not here." Which is the lyric heard in FARMAGEDDON when they realize that the Farmer went to outer space!

(It takes a special kind of skill to take such a depressing song and make it FUNNY in any context.)

Anyways, those are just a couple examples off the top of my head. Aardman's work is distinctly British, to the core. And the CHICKEN RUN movies give me a fascinating idea of when they are set, a very cartoon British '60s.

2) Why did you choose your URL?

It has been my fanfic pen name since 2004. The first published fanfic I wrote was for the Pirates of the Caribbean fandom, and it was a ridiculous crackfic about Jack, Will, and Elizabeth running around the 21st century with me and my two best friends. When they said goodbye at the end, they each gave us a pirate name. Jack gave me the name Black Grace, so "BG Sparrow" I be! I could never part ways with it at this point.

3) What is your middle name?

Dawn. And I don't like it. Makes me feel like some braided pigtail 12-year-old in Little House on the Prairie, and that's just not my vibe. My sister won the middle name game with "Linette".

4) If you could be any mythical creature, what would you be?

A mythical creature... I must admit, I have never been asked this. I'm boring in this way, but something humanoid. Powerful. Maybe immortal. Fairy? Yeah, let's go with fairy. I've always loved the message of how powerful belief is in Peter Pan.

5) Favorite color?

Brown. I know, right? Five-year-old me is screwing up her face screaming, "You could pick any of the gorgeous colors in the entire universe, and you picked brown?" Yeah, I did. Blues/teals/aquas have always drawn me in and still do, but brown wins out by a small margin.

The most recent additions to my Annual Awesome: 2023 playlist include Death Drive by junodream (My No Pines Marty anthem) and Dancing With Your Ghost by Sasha Alex Sloan. Also listening to the score for Lawmen: Bass Reeves by Chanda Dancy right now because for some reason, the scores from these Tyler Sheridan shows fuel my 1885 BttF stories like none other, and I need a new one to attach to Once Upon a Time in the North as I write it. So! Finally, the Dawn of DC series' have wrapped up and the Alan Scott: The Green Lantern series was far and away my favorite one (written by Tim Sheridan, art by Cian Tormey). So, I wanted to write up a little blurb about it and what I liked about it so much.

For those not in the know, the past six months DC has run a bunch of limited series about very early DC superheroes who have had a bit of a comeback in recent years, after the events of the Lazarus Planet stuff. Alan Scott: The Green Lantern follows the titled character and tells his origin story, altering it to fit into current DC continuity.

It starts with Alan and his struggle with his government minders, who are attempting to manipulate him by blackmailing him. They have obtained his journal from when he was a young man first looking for the legendary power, The Crimson Flame, that resulted in the accident that gave him his lantern powers. The journal details his love affair with one of his officers, Johnny Ladd, in addition to the events of the ill-fated expedition.

To make matters worse, someone is murdering people that Alan used to know and trying to make it look like Alan did it. He follows the clues, which lead him back to Arkham Asylum, a place he knows too well. He had checked himself into Arkham Asylum briefly after leaving the military. While investigating, he recalls the people he met there and his realization that none of them deserved the treatment they received in the name of "helping" them.

Throughout the story, the JSA (the Justice Society of America, kind of the progenitor of the Justice League) is also investigating the case and trying to pull Alan into the fold. But he's understandably reticent, considering that's just what his government minders want him to do.

When Alan finally catches up with the person who has been framing him, he's faced with his worst nightmare and most cherished dream. John in fact didn't die in the ocean the day they found the crimson flame. Instead, he survived and became a Red Lantern!

And okay, at this point, I would be spoiling the last two issues of the run and I don't want to do that. But, it definitely keeps getting more intense and dramatic!

This is exactly the kind of story that I love and want to read in a comic book. Like, sure it's dramatic and over the top, but if I can't let a comic book do that, then what can I? Even though it is incredibly dramatic, almost melodramatic, I still liked all the characters, I understood where they were coming from and why they were doing what they were doing, and I was absolutely glued to every issue that came out!

They're going to release all the issues in a trade paper back soon, and I encourage anyone who likes comic books and superhero stories and especially queer superheroes to give it some consideration! I really can't overstate how much I liked this series.

On a lighter note, I'd like to imagine that this whole finale Sam is just constantly wet, coming in from the lake, getting back through the well... He had no time to dry and he's our literal poor wet little meow meow that needs a thousand Allen hugs and a towel.

Somehow Anna rolls a nat 20 on persuasion against Amy to return to her life while Amy somehow agrees to be left behind and help Anna close the loops... Explains the tapes disappearing from Meriwether in the season 3 finale... but it puts them in a weird time loop where they get to Anna's van, found and eventually taken to Meriwether to be taken back to the van again... how were they created in the first place if they are in that infinite loop? Timey whimey stuff is confusing.

It's kinda sad that in the end Anna's mother spoke to Amy in an Anna disguise rather than Anna herself because she wasn't feeling well enough for it... Hope that now that Anna comes back she'll speak to her mother properly even as her memory goes.

Good for Ren saving everyone from their nightmares with the power of music and imagination. Finally they manage to see the dawn of a new day because Morrison is weakening

Mann the fight with Morrison was intense. Once they close all of the loops he suddenly is poisoned? Unable to control the gate to the source? And then Ned sacrificing himself to push Morrison into the source to be killed by the Guardian... I refuse to believe he's dead it wasn't on screen and Sam saw him still alive when returning with Anna so it didn't happen 😭😭😭

So now the bubble is gone, Morrison is in the void with Ned and Anna is back and everyone else is fine(ish). The worst of it is over and now we have to wait for the finale to see what they will do now and of course how they rescue Ned :D

uh oh mission get the lesbians together paused, because antonia j crowley GOT FUCKED OVER BY THE LIFES TRAGEDIES MOD AND WAS ACTIVELY FUCKING DYING FROM A TERMINAL ILLNESS. like the dramatic bitch she is, attempted to promptly die in aziraphales arms but my game glitched.

two failed surgeries and a severe anxiety diagnosis later, i cheat take away the fatal illness and disable tragedies for antonia AND aziraphale! (i forgot to mention it but while crowley was out here getting surgeries, she nearly got targeted by a serial killer. at this point i nearly fucking deleted life’s tragedies)

they both get some sleep after all the trauma it is now sim day 3. while aziraphale goes to her culinary career, i let antonia celebrate with two hookups from the simda dating app and she gets promptly railed by akira kibo and johnny zest.

aziraphale always has a tense moodlet from being introverted and particularly wasn’t feeling it when akira fucking kibo would not leave so i use the extreme violence mod to murder his ass while antonia naps.

now that its just them, we finally catch up on getting the ineffable idiots together :)) they flirt more, hug and eventually woohoo on the coffee table and go to sleep. they’re also officially dating

my sims wake up at the ass crack of dawn, it is day 4 in sims time and i notice an uncomfortable moodlet off of crowley so i check. IT IS PREGNANCY CRAVINGS???? yeah crowleys pulled a donna sheridan by getting knocked up and not knowing who the father is.

she tells azi, who gets a fine moodlet from the baby not being hers. i notice this, have them be flirty in the kitchen and BAM is that a proposal literally TWELVE MINUTES BEFORE AZI GOES TO WORK?? you’d be correct ding ding.

i make some adjustments to the house because crowley now has a crotch groblin inside her. the wives share a room, and crowleys old room becomes a yellow nursery for baby girl!

not very eventful until literally 10pm, when thanks to LIFES TRAGEDIES MOD we get an armed robber come in while crowley is napping 💀 so i use mc command center, think the robber will die if i kill her and turn her into a ghost because there’s been a few failed murder attempts and brawls atp but SHES STILL ROBBING OUR HOUSE. AS A FUCKING GHOST.!?!(!,

at this point only the lord can save these bastards so i leave without saving so the heist never happened.

redo of day 4, morning still the same but they instead adopt a hairless cat named maya and immediately become the worlds best cat mums :)) we might have had to delete the adopter to be able to officially keep her but it’s fine!

Over the course of 200 years of American history, people bought new diaries, sent letters, and created cards to mark the change from one year to another. Here are a few of our favorite musings on the passage of time, transcribed by our amazing volunteers.

1850: "Hail Teusday! thous first born of the new year. Thou dost usher upon the world another half century. Times aged brow axious another wrinkle - his pulsied limbs now bear another semi centenial load. Joanne Sheridan - 24 - She/Her - Zendaya FC

CAREER CRIMINAL but with the thickest cajun accent you've ever heard. Jo's been making a life for herself all on her own since she ran away from home as a teen. She's gotten herself pretty far just by thieving and killing. She has a knack for aligning herself with likeminded folk, and can follow instructions real well if there's a pay out.

Peter Caldwell - 64 - He/Him - Kyle MacLachlan FC

METALHEAD. Peter's been around the metal scene since its dawn. He spent years travelling and headbanging, learning all that he could not only about rock, but all genres. When he finally decided to settle down he headed back to the states and opened up a record shop. No one really knew where he got the money from or how it stays open, but he's happy to provide a safe space for the community.

Samar Arya - 2,000+ - He/Him - Dev Patel FC

THE ANCIENT ONE. Samar Arya has been around since the beginning of time. Or at least it is beginning to feel that way. One of the very first of his kind. He has seen mofre than any intelligent life form should ever suffer through. Frequently described as a grumpy old man, the vampire does his best to hide his hopelessly romantic true self.

THE DUNGEON MASTER. Your usual nerdy DnD youtuber. Though he started out small with a few friends and a camera, he is now constantly asked to conventions, and has even crossed over into the world of gaming streams. A household name for weirdos.

Kali Gonzalez - 25 - She/Her - Alexa Demie FC

TATTOO ARTIST. Witchy and crystal loving, Kali usually smells like incense. She's quite laid back but she absolutely loves with her entire heart. However that doesn't mean she hasn't gotten into a fight or two. She knows she's hot and doesn't need anyone to remind her, her ego is big enough. Does require men to do a tarot reading before she sleeps with them, but it's okay because she sorta prefers ladies anyway.

Daisy Davis - 27 - She/Her - Laura Harrier FC

THE OPTIMIST. People usually believed Daisy was stupid. She was bubbly, sweet, and would help anyone who needed help. Yet what she may have lacked in so called 'street smarts' she surely made up for in her knowledge of language. She's a bit to comfortable living off of her wealthy parents money, but if she ever wanted a job, he ability to speak 10 different languages would surely get her one. In her free time she enjoys translating various poetry.

Lilla Jean Grace - 27 - She/Her - Suki Waterhouse FC

STRIPPER WITH A HEART OF GOLD. Lilla always had big dreams of making it out of Minnesota. Unfortunately those dreams haven't proven to be realistic just yet. She grew up constantly being told she was an idiot, and felt she had proven that by failing out of high school. Yet she's grown to learn that she's plenty emotionally smart. She can take care of herself, so what else matters?

Jude Ofori - 36 - He/Him - Yahya Abdul-Mateen II FC

PEDIATRICIAN, TOTAL ASSHOLE. Jude works too much and too hard to worry about other people's feelings. Cold. Unfeeling. Words plenty of his ex husbands and wives had thrown around, but he never took offense. Deeply insecure, and constantly looking for validation. The man is surely going to crumble at some point. Just not today.

Frankie Slater - 35 - She/They - Ritu Arya FC

THE EXHAUSTED ROCKSTAR. The whole touring thing was fun for the first ten years Then it became tedious. She'd spent her entire twenties in and out of rehabs, and on the cover of magazines scantaly clad or puking on herself. With three divorces under her belt by thirty Frankie has finally gotten her shit together. Maybe. At least she's been clean for a year, that's worth something right?

Hayden Altman - 39 - He/Him - Andrew Garfield FC

PARANOID. Writing about true crime isn't for the weak-hearted, so Hayden isn't sure why he got into it in the first place. Probably some point when he was getting a dual degree in pyschology and writing, or maybe the minor in criminology. He had always been deeply obsessed with research and finding as much information as possible. Any time he questions why he ruins his sanity for it, the checks come in, or detectives reach out for help and he realizes it is worth it.

Nina Otieno - 39 - She/Her - Lupita Nyong'o FC

THE FALLEN BALLERINA. Raised in France, Nina was raised within her mother's ballet studio, wearing point shoes practically as soon as she could stand up. She loved dance, she viewed it as the most sacred out of all of the arts, and dedicated her life to it. There was no other option but for her to be a performer, and she did not disappoint. By the time she was a teenager she travelled with a touring group across Europe. In her mid twenties, she'd finally made a name and living for herself when it all fell apart. A tale as old as time. One bad fall, and she would never be able to dance the same again. She's found purpose in being a teacher. She figures the least she can do is bring proper Parisian Ballet to Americans.
