The new era of Elseworlds kicks off with the return of its crown jewel, the mysterious and gothic world originated by Brian Augustyn and Mike Mignola! When a mysterious meteor falls on the wide-open plains of the Midwest, it will…
Ever since the News of James Gunn rebooting/Soft Rebooting the DCEU, who is to take on the cape and cowl. In this scenario I'd simply make it so that Flashpoint recasts Batman and Alfred without any major story change in this hypothetical universe. But who is to become the new Batman and Alfred Pennyworth?
Rebirth Alfred
Let start with Alfred. As said before a lot of British Actors fit the role well. We someone well kept, sophisticated, witty. I was about to use Timothy Dalton, but he was in Doom Patrol, I then went with Pierce Brosnan, then he was in Shazam.
Someone in his 60s. Don't want him to die midway through a trilogy. Let's emphasize a mixture of this character's past by him being both in the Royal Marines as a medic and a well versed stage actor. This eventually led me to Liam Cunningham. You guys might know him as the Onion Knight Davos in Game of Thrones or the horror classic Dog Soldiers. His more grounded nature and rugged looks will do well to differentiate him from actors like Michael Caine and Jeremy Irons.
Rebirth Batman
For the Caped Crusader he is once again a difficult character cast. But boy do I have an idea. Mid 30s early 40s, someone classically handsome. Fatherly yet suave. Certified DILF energy.....yes I said that. Lets back away from the tragic Affleck, gothic Patterson and grounded Bale and go back to basics.
We need someone who can play multiple personalities in character. Luckily he played Batman before.Grimm actor David Giuntoli is 42 years old , 6ft , and has the looks of classical hollywood actor like Alan Alda. I'm going for a more Chip/Bruno Redondo/Jason Fabok Batman. Best of all the contemporary Batmen put together. Strong yet agile, brutal yet gentle. We also want to make sure he still looks like he can be a dad. I am also emphasizing the separation of his identities, almost emulating the Animated Series Batman. Luckily David has voice Batman in an animated movie playing a disco era Batman.
today we have my beloved baby boy Cerris Dalca Tempescu!
made just this year for a "Curse of Strahd" campaign DMed by my husband, Cerris was not a character i expected to get so attached to. my husband's version of Curse of Strahd is largely homebrew, using the book as a scaffold to make a much more rich and detailed and frankly more horrifying and dangerous gothic horror campaign. like, real dead dove do not eat shit. i started this campaign knowing that permanent PC death was a very real possibility, and initially i was okay with the idea of rolling a new character once or even twice. now, literally only thirteen sessions in, however, i've decided that actually no, if Cerris dies, i will not be rolling a new character. instead i'll just bring him back as some sort of undead thing. there's already so many undead beings in Barovia he really wouldn't stand out all that much--and if comics can do it then so can i!
look. listen. Cerris is a solid 80% of the reason i made this sideblog. i just love him, okay? he's my comfort character. my pathetic little meow meow. my rotten soldier, my sweet cheese, my good bad time boy.
so. how to describe him?
Cerris is basically if Clark Kent were a classic gothic hero. he's a hunky farmboy who grew up somewhat isolated from his peers because his mom was worried he got cursed by the Tempest, the local storm god, as a baby. she named him after the oak tree (quercus cerris), as the oak is held to be protective against lightning, and thus she hoped the name would protect him against the Tempest's wrath. fortunately, he was not actually cursed by the Tempest. unfortunately, he was blessed by the Tempest, claimed as an offering, as a servant on the material plane to remind people of His power and glory and to do the dirty work He's too busy for. the plaything of a god
like the DCEU Superman, Cerris has been burdened with godly power he never wanted, and holding such power has made a lot of people frightened of him. unlike the DCEU Superman, Cerris is nonetheless determined to use that power for good
and that's the state he's in when he winds up getting trapped in Barovia, an unfortunate country banished with its ruler to a demi-plane of evil called the Shadowfell. there, his naivety and heroic drive stand out, but at first, it all seems like it's going to be okay. he and his new party help people, and the dread king Strahd is tall and suave and finds them all interesting rather than a threat. Cerris even has a blossoming romance with a fiery young noblewoman named Ireena. only problem is, Ireena is the reincarnation of Strahd's sister-in-law/ex (sort of), and Strahd has unfinished business with her--and unfortunately, Cerris's naivety and heroic drive make him a very useful pawn in Strahd's efforts to finish that business
two year old meta being recirculated whenever a new dceu movie drops and remembering all your bvs fandom friends are deactivated and others have changed their names so you don’t know who they are anymore
it’s 2015 and you can talk about man of steel that’s been out for two years now. you find out it was well received and broke records. u openly cry about the hans zimmer score changing your life you still listen to it
realizing after the first bvs trailer dropped how many people you follow were unironic m(u stans and the veil is torn from your eyes. wait a second. all of tumblr is unironically into the m(u and female coded tony stark meta has10,000 notes and ignores six of the thirteen movies tony appears.meta about dancers in captain america that appear in one scene as 30000 notes. the meta about steve running laps in DC has 20,000 notes and these ppl use real math to calculate a path to ????? idk man i still don’t know but ON YOUR LEFT LOLLLLL dc pretentious losers with their artsy fartsy allegories and PTSD and character arcs and multiple POCS and WOCS pffff
HAhaaaa if they listen to the haters they’ll hire j0ss wh3don to take over justice league AHAHAAAAAA IMAGINE!!!!!!!!!!!sdkfsflhsdkf
bvs the 950 million dollar flop
suicide squad the 750 million oscar winning flop
ww the savior of the dceu makes 1 billion for zero reason without marketing or lead in gal gadot just appeared before our very eyeballs fully formed
no no nooooo aquaman saved the dceu makes another 1 billion for also zero reason it’s not like the first image zack released six years before justice league came out was of jason momoa as arthur that incorporated his culture into the mythos that was by accident
shazam saved the dceu
no birds of prey saved it
except no? birds of prey flopped
except birds of prey made its money back
except birds of prey was not exemplary of feminism so it failed as a female movie
it should’ve been pg-13 so little girls could see it
except the movie should not just be for little girls
and it shouldn’t alienate men
everyone who is going to this movie is being tricked into seeing it bc no one has any awareness about the media they consume whatsoever
except it should have had absolute mass appeal to matter
trying to explain the difference between performative diversity and inclusiveness and actual diversity and inclusiveness but lol hot topic MARTHAAAAAAA grim dark NOT MYYYY SUPERMAN
you don’t actually hate the m(u and while this has always been true you are constantly surprised when you remember that you don’t hate the m(u actually you’ve never thought as much about the m(u until you joined the dceu fandom
being nostalgic for 2015-2017 even tho you received death threats
the joker as a domineering unpredictable gangster who abuses his girlfriend? nope sorry can’t have that! also doesn’t matter that margot robbie worked on her costumes with the female costume designer who won an academy award for her work or that the most exposed amazons were professional body builders holding up a thousand tons of rock to help their queen escape it’s all exploitive bc zack snyder hates women and wants you to sexualize their bulging muscles faora who what now? marthat LOL MARTHAAAA lois has sex with her boyfriend of two years the slut how dare she be vulnerable
every single dceu movie is a rip off of an m(u movie but also somehow too fake deep and too different stylistically to appease m(u fans and you have stopped trying to make sense of why these people want the same movie ten thousand times, movies they actively ignore and outright hate
you try not to think about how the wb chose to listen to the haters who were never going to like their movies instead of the people who passionately loved and defended them. you don’t know if you’re going to see the next dceu movie. you listen to old MOSAIC podcasts and discover something you missed in bvs even though it’s been five years and you’ve seen it a hundred times
there is ONE single cbm news site you trust but you expect them to let you down any moment now.
james gunn had to delete 10,000 tweets with p3do jokes about little boys and he made a parody of man of steel where a little super powered boy turns evil. the wb gives him suicide squad. zack snyder’s daughter suicide is fair game. the wb fires him.
critics still hate dceu movies despite them being brighter, lighter and more fun standalones with zero consequences like they wanted. almost as if they never gave a shit and won't ever give a shit! you want to tok about this but the dceu fandom doesn’t really exist any more not like it did
every single dceu tag gives you anxiety
you are ready at any given moment to fight j0ss wh3don. buffy isn’t that good and neither was firefly and you should say it. ANGEL 4EVA
just came back from watching The Batman. I enjoyed it, mainly the Batcat parts (I've been rewatching Gotham's Baby Batcat scenes and was VERY in the mood. glad not to be disappointed).
I doubt I'll make any post more ~in depth about it over here but I just had to say-
Best. Wayne Manor. Ever. such a delightful Addams family vibes. I want one. I want one DESPERATELY.
Ok, so here's my non spoilery opinion on the movie.
It's good. It's very, very good.
Forget everything you watched on the trailers, they do not do the movie any justice.
First of all, they don't beat that dead horse again. Aka, we don't have to see the Wayne's die for the millionth time.
Second of all, both Pattison and Reeves understood the assignment.
This is a movie that was clearly written and directed by a comic book reader, it comes across well, not only in the way it's adapted and the characterization of the characters but also in all the subtle references and all the foreshadowing constantly being dropped.
It's also definitely not for children/younger audiences. And the fact that it's not constrained by the DCEU's family-friendly policies really shows. The old Comics Authority would have a field day with this movie
But, moving on...
The first thing you have to bear in mind is that this is a portrayal of a Batman that is young and still fairly new to his role, he has been at it long enough to be extremely effective and win over Gordon's trust but he's still very green emotionally, still discovering himself and his role and growing as a character.
We also see a return to Batman's true origins- the detective and the cryptid, long before he became just another fighting machine (although he still is an excellent fighter and absolutely brutal).
Robert Pattison delivered a very good portrayal of the character, the use of silence and anti social behavior were perfect (very emo but absolutely a young Bruce Wayne), as was his level of intelligence and his single-minded attitude. He clearly understands Bruce Wayne on a level other actors have not (perhaps because he actually reads the comics).
Zoe Kravitz also delivers an excellent performance as Selina, and for once we get a Selina that is actually her own character with her own development instead of just a sexy prop or supporting character for Batman. She's also at the beginning of her career and quite faithful to the essence of her comic roots (although with some twists).
Riddler is fantastic. If you are used to cartoony flamboyant Riddler or Jim Carrey's over-the-top Riddler, forget it. If you are used to awkward and nerdy but hyper competent, extremely intelligent, ruthless, death-trap loving Riddler from the comics though? You're going to love this guy.
Penguin's characterization is good. Very good. I can't go into more without being spoilery.
The visuals and editing are stunning, is it dark and gritty? Yes, it is, but not in the boring, minimalistic, militaristic, too real, dull grey of the Nolan movies, instead it's simply very modern gothic and the use of color is very well thought out, exactly what you'd expect from Gotham.
The music is good, I won't say it's phenomenal, it might not stick with you afterwards, but it's still very good and works really well to complement the scenes.
The wardrobe in general is excellent without being over the top (unless it has to be). And after seeing it in a different light, Pattison's mask is definitely a nod to Adam West's Batman in 66, the disassembled gun bat symbol is dramatic as hell but it actually works really well.
In my humble opinion it might be one of the best Batman interpretations in modern live action (I'm sorry, Keaton, my darling).
Is it perfect? No, no movie is.
But it's still very good and it has POTENTIAL to be so much more, Reeves gave us a lot of foreshadowing and laid down a lot of ground work for sequels that I honestly hope get green-lit but I can't discuss that without spoilers so I'll leave that in a separate review.

With the success of The Batman, I’d love a similar treatment for Superman
my other DC fancasts
DCEU Recast
Batman
Wonder Woman
The Flash
Green Lantern
Aquaman
Green Arrow
Justice League
Teen Titans
Justice League Dark
Batman Beyond
The Dark Knight Returns
Telltale’s Batman
Injustice
Legion Of Doom
Birds Of Prey
Few things I wanna say before we continue with the fancast.
Metropolis. You know how Batman adaptations make Gotham very distinct with a broody atmosphere and Gothic architecture? We need the same energy for Metropolis. Metropolis should look bright, shining and borderline futuristic. Metropolis should have a proper 50's retro-futurism vibe. Long monorails, golden shiny buildings, rounded glass penthouses
Director. Ideally I would say Brad Bird, George Miller or Matthew Vaughn
Reason for reboot. WB still has no idea on what they want to do with Superman or if Henry will even still be attached.
Also another reason for why I want this hypothetical reboot is this video
